Maximilian and nine others were put into a chamber by themselves. Eventually their bodies became too weak from lack of food and water and they all perished on August 14th, 1941. This story was shown on the NBC several years later. At the time of the airing Gasovnachek was 82 years old. Throughout the interview he could not stop crying while telling the story. He could not believe that a random priest whom he barely knew would lay down his life for a German Jew, but to this day he is grateful. Wouldn’t we be grateful for such a sacrifice? Shouldn’t we be grateful for such a sacrifice? In John 15.13 we read “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends”. This is true love, the same true love that Christ showed while hanging on the cross. Let us demonstrate this love, let us love others so much that we are prepared to give ourselves for their sake. Let us always love and never stop. Nathan Greene No Greater Love John 15.13 In February of 1941 a Franciscan priest named Maximilian Kolbe was sent to Auschwitz, Poland. He was being sent to the famous death camp for helping Jews escape from the horrible Nazi regime. Months after Maximilian arrived, an escape took place. The escape failed and harsher rules were enforced. To show an example of force the Nazis decided to murder ten people. These people would be rounded up randomly and herded into a cell where they would die a cruel death of starvation. By doing this the Nazis thought “never will anyone attempt an escape again.” As they were rounding up random hostages, the name Frandishek Gasovnachek was called. Upon hearing it Gasovnachek’s little boy grabbed his leg and began crying in terror. He did not want his daddy to die. While they were grabbing him Gasovnachek screamed “No, no, please I have a wife and children”. The cruel German soldiers had no compassion on him or his boy and were marching him forward anyway. After witnessing this, the Franciscan priest Maximilian stepped forward and said “please, take me instead”. He was truly giving of himself. Continued on back…. We show our love by the way we treat others.
