Thursday 6th – Sunday 9th June All foreign films are subtitled. CMAX CINEMAS 5-7 Best Street, Devonport TAS Ph (03) 6420 2111 www.cmax.net.au The CMax International Film Festival is a collection of eight films from around the globe. It again was a tough decision on what films to put into the festival, but as you will see we have a good mix from different countries and genres. I am very excited to be launching this year’s festival with THE HUNT an incredibly powerful film from Denmark. It was a standout at the Cannes Film Festival, for which Mads Mikkelson won best actor. It will be a wonderful week – surrounded by great food and wine, award winning International Films and Documentaries, films to make us laugh and films that will touch our heart. I hope you can join us for this unique festival – a festival not to be missed. Katrine Elliott, General Manager Denmark (MA) 125 min Thursday June 6th 6.30pm Join us after the film for drinks and nibbles to celebrate the launch of the film festival. “Superb... Wonderful” Margaret Pomeranz, AT THE MOVIES Mads Mikkelsen (A ROYAL AFFAIR) delivers a superb, award-winning performance in this electrifying new film from Thomas Vinterberg, the acclaimed director of THE CELEBRATION (FESTEN). Lucas (Mads Mikkelsen) is beloved by his students and fellow teachers at his local kindergarten. After a divorce, made especially painful when his wife moved away from town with their teenage son, Marcus, Lucas’ life is recovering with a new girlfriend, and the reforging of his relationship with Marcus. His world comes crashing down, however, when a young girl in his class accuses him of inappropriate behaviour. It’s a simple lie that spirals out of control and the small community suddenly finds itself in a collective state of hysteria. Long held friendships are tested as mistrust takes hold, and Lucas must summon all his strength in a brave fight for his life and dignity. America (MA) 95 min Friday June 7th 6.30pm France (M) 102 min Friday June 7th 8.45pm Based on the poignantly optimistic autobiographical writings of California-based journalist and poet Mark O’Brien, THE SESSIONS tells the story of a man confined to an iron lung who is determined - at age 38 - to lose his virginity. With the help of his therapists and the guidance of his priest, he sets out to make his dream a reality. Academy award Nominee John Hawkins , Academy Award Winner Helen Hunt,Academy Award Nominee William h. Macy. Directed by Gilles Legrand, You Will Be My Son stars Niels Arestrup as Paul de Marseul, a prestigious winemaker and owner of a renowned chateau and vineyard in SaintÉmilion, whom is disheartened by the notion of his son Martin (Lorànt Deutsch) taking over the family business. Martin does not seem to have inherited the qualities that Paul esteems in a wine-maker: persistence, creative insight and technical prowess matched with passion for the job and the product, and Paul frequently reminds him of this, whether explicitly or in subtle gestures. When Philippe (Nicolas Bridet) appears at the vineyard, Paul leaps at the chance to name him as his successor, neglecting the wishes of his own son. The tension in this familial triangle comes to a head when an unexpected event changes everything. Like a fine wine, this drama is full-bodied and complex and provides a fascinating look at the matter of the transmission of knowledge, heritage and tradition in the world of wine. A comedy by Mike Birbiglia Produced by Ira Glass of This American Life. A comedy for anyone who’s ever had a dream. And then jumped out a window. America (M) 95 min Saturday June 8th 2.00pm Sleepwalk with Me is a 2012 American independent comedy film written by, directed by, and starring comedian Mike Birbiglia. The film premiered at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and won the Best of NEXT Audience Award. When an aspiring stand-up fails to express his true feelings about his girlfriend and his stalled career, his anxiety comes out in increasingly funny and dangerous sleepwalking incidents. Features Lauren Ambrose (“Six Feet Under”), Carol Kane (“Taxi”), James Rebhorn (“Meet the Parents”), Cristin Milioti (star of Broadway’s “Once”). Oscar Nominee Best Language Foreign film Spain (M) 117 min Saturday June 8th 4.15pm A prizewinner at the Cannes,, Gael García Bernal (The Motorcycle Diaries) stars as René Saavedra, an advertising executive who risks his life by devising a campaign to defeat dictator Augusto Pinochet in Chile’s 1988 leadership referendum. Directed by Pablo Larraín, this chapter in recent Chilean history is an absorbing account of one country’s unlikely route from oppression to democracy. “Mr. Larraín blurs the line between the fiction and the clips from the real ‘No’ campaign woven throughout” (New York Times). Note: film’s pictorial quality is purposely degraded by the director to create era-centric authenticity. American Documentary (M) 102 min Saturday June 8th 7.00pm France (MA) 130 min Sunday June 9th 1.15pm In SILENCE IN THE HOUSE OF GOD: MEA MAXIMA CULPA Oscarwinning filmmaker Alex Gibney exposes the abuse of power in the Catholic Church and a cover-up that winds its way from the row houses of Milwaukee Wisconsin, through the bare ruined choirs of Ireland’s churches all the way to the highest office of the Vatican. By investigating the secret crimes of a charismatic priest who abused over 200 deaf children in a school under his control – the film shows the face of evil that lurks behind the smiles and denials of authority figures and institutions who believe that because they stand for good they can do no wrong. From acclaimed director Jacques Audiard, who delivered such powerhouse films including the Oscar-nominated A Prophet, Read My Lips and the eight Cesar-award winning The Beat That My Heart Skipped, comes Rust and Bone. Penniless and landed with a 5-year-old son to look after, he goes to stay with his sister in Antibes and starts looking for work. At a nightclub he meets Stephanie (Cotillard), a killer whale trainer at the local Marineland Water Park. Alain is fascinated by her, but Stephanie isn’t interested in him, until she suffers a tragic accident that leaves her handicapped. An unusual, physical and codified relationship develops between them. As in Audiard’s previous films, with Rust and Bone he takes two characters in an unlikely relationship, on the margins of society, plagued by their inner demons and obsessions, and delivers a deeply dramatic punch. Based on the extraordinary true story of President Francois Mitterand’s private cook.
