Annual “State of the City” Luncheon Scheduled
W
est Texas Training Center will be the venue for the August 12th luncheon as we hear from Mayor Dwain Morrison
and City Manager Daniel Valenzuela in the City’s annual update to Chamber members.
Dwain Morrison was elected San Angelo’s mayor in June of 2013, culminating 10 years of
service on the San Angelo City Council. He served as the Single-Member District 2 representative
from 2003-13, representing north San Angelo. He owned and operated a fencing company for 25
years. He is now semi-retired, working as a contract hauler and sharing pulpit teaching responsibilities with the other men at his church. Mayor Morrison says he intends to serve as San Angelo’s chief public relations officer and has promised a Council that will be transparent and citizen-centric.
Daniel Valenzuela was chosen to serve as San Angelo’s City Manager in September of
2012. A native West Texan, he served a tour in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in
1993. He obtained a Masters of Business Administration degree from Texas Tech University in
2000. He was subsequently employed as a business and accounting instructor at Midland College Regional Technical Training Center while also working as Unit Health Administrator for Pecos
County Memorial Hospital. From 2003 to 2007, Daniel served as City Manager for Fort Stockton
and then moved on to the City of Eagle Pass where he served as City Manager from July 2008
until he was chosen as the City Manager for San Angelo.

Legislative Summit Breaks New Ground
The days are getting hotter, and so is business
around the Concho Valley!
Gearing up for our 11th annual success, the West
Texas Legislative Summit is adding a companion event in 2014
to the legislative and industry sessions on energy. The planning committee has added an Energy Expo to the two-day
meeting to allow local companies and a few energy companies doing business in the region to showcase their products
Rick Mantooth
and services to those in attendance. If you’re not exhibiting,
Chairman
of the Board
you may visit the Energy Expo at no charge at the McNease
Convention Center from 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5 through
lunchtime on Thursday, Aug. 7. However, to attend the West Texas Legislative Summit, you
must register. See the outstanding lineup of speakers and panelists, and registration options, online at sanangelo.org. In addition to industry panelists and community representatives, keynote speakers will include State Rep. Drew Darby and other state legislators, Congressman Mike Conaway, Texas A&M Chancellor John Sharp, and Pioneer Natural Resources COO Tim Dove.
Thanks to our “partners” at Ener-Tel Services who sponsored a great Business @
Happy Hour on July 22, including a tour of their facilities. We also thank all who attended
July’s Business Brown Bag Lunch featuring presenters from Shannon Medical Center regarding how wellness impacts your bottom line.
The enclosed Barometer shows our sales tax to be up 9.9% over last year at this
time, now with 46 straight months of increases over same month, previous year. Other
indicators are also positive. Thank you for your role in stimulating the economy, and for
the steadfast support you provide to the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce.
Here are a few opportunities to complete your last full month of summer:

held a mixer last month at

enjoyed beautiful weather
