Take a step back to the simple pleasures in life, participate in a masterclass and chat with local farmers, producers and winemakers while your taste buds explore boutique labels you’ve yet to discover. This year’s Show will feature the new Artisan Alley where you can discover Queensland labels you won’t find in the supermarket. Meet and greet some of the finest local food artisans, from Gympie to Northern NSW, and sample what could be your new pantry musthave. Once you have a few key ingredients in your basket, head over to the Laucke Creative Kitchen where Sammy & Bella (My Kitchen Rules) will be preparing interesting dishes using products directly from the Show floor. When you’re ready to get hands-on in the kitchen, learn the secrets behind Adriano Zumbo’s famed Zumbarons in his first two-hour masterclass presented by Kenwood. Adriano will take you through the step-by-step process to create his highly acclaimed macarons. Also new to the Show this year is the Grazing Garden where famed food trucks from around Brisbane (including The Bun Mobile, That BBQ Joint and Siguenos) have been mustered into green and grassy pastures so you can eat, chat and relax with mates. Of course, the Show wouldn’t be complete without the usual favourites including: • The Good Food Theatre – see the chefs in action, learn a recipe and hear professional tips and tricks from chefs including Matt Moran, Miguel page 16 gcmag - A Generation of Change october 2014 Maestre, Maggie Beer and Matt Stone. • Chef’s Table – Don’t just watch the chefs on TV – head to the LifeStyle FOOD Chef’s Table and hear the chefs stories first-hand as they prepare a three-course tasting and share the origins of the produce used to create each meal. Top it off with gorgeous Australian wines matched by the chefs to each course. • Cheese Alley by Tucker’s Natural– we’ve brought together boutique cheese makers and producers of some of Australia’s most loved cheeses so that you can let your taste buds choose a few favourites and ask the producers about flavour, preparation methods and ingredients. • VIP Room – exclusive and more impressive than ever. Having a long line of hairdressers and make-up artists in her family you could say that make-up was in Victoria’s blood and her future was already written. After high school following her father’s advice, Victoria went to university and completed a business degree majoring in accounting and marketing. During her time at university she was offered, and accepted, a scholarship to study in California where she met several makeup manufacturers. Throughout these formative years Victoria never lost sight of her ultimate dream by retaining her passion for all forms of make-up. She accepted a position at L’Oreal Australia in their marketing department, creating marketing material for their professional product section. This position saw her constantly on the road visiting salons, helping her to build up a wealth of knowledge. These experiences led her to see a gap in the market for salon quality, high end, luxurious make-up. From this Victoria slowly began developing her own brand and in 2010 her namesake make-up range - Curtis Collection by Victoria - was born. She started out formulating products for her own skin issues which she then started using on her local clients in Brisbane. Now, four years on, Curtis Collection by Victoria has blossomed to over 100 stockists in Australia and New Zealand alone. Victoria stated that, ironically, she page 24 gcmag - A Generation of Change october 2014 page 25 VC Written By: Lucy Stubbs is now working in the same industry, giving support to the same types of businesses and carrying that big brand mentality. Victoria had envisioned creating beautiful products that a salon would be proud to display. But her brand is more than just make-up. It offers a wider range of beauty solutions, which cater for the concerns of the everyday woman and making their life effortless by prescribing makeup for their skin needs, issues or problems. This strategy is essential to setting her brand and products apart from competitors. Her products are designed with natural ingredients which benefit your skin requirements giving your skin the hydration and attention it needs. Her mineral products support skin health and results will be seen a whole lot quicker, even working hand in hand with other beauty therapies or treatments. The Curtis Collection is known in the industry for its signature glow. The particles in the mineral base foundation are activated by light, hiding those imperfections and flaws and giving your skin that glowing, flawless look that we all wish to achieve. Creating this look Victoria suggests using the pour perfection primer, colour corrector making your skin nice and smooth then mixing the radiant glow illuminator with foundation and finishing with an illuminator pen, using it under your cheek bones and eyes to minimize those dark circles and highlighting the areas to give a elevated youthful look. The top three products she cannot live without are - the pour perfecting face primer, which can be warn alone; the Radiant glow Illuminator; and the Brown definer that with one coat across your brows gives you sixteen hours of wear and can even be warn in water. Curtis Collection will continue to explore new opportunities and plan to expand globally into new, emerging markets. Victoria’s advice for future entrepreneurs is to work hard. Nothing ever comes easy. Make sure you really love what you’re doing, maintain the passion, do plenty of research and be well informed of the market you are going to enter and know your products. This ultimately makes your journey a whole lot easier by building relationships with people that can relate to your story and your experience, making it easy to generate back to your brand. Her last piece of advice is to have a lot of patience. Those little decisions that you make along the way will help you to achieve your bigger picture. This summer’s make-up look that will be gracing the runways, It fashion sites and faces of red carpet celebrities it’s firstly all about the fresh face, natural glow giving that effortless just rolled out of bed look that we all wish to achieve in 2 items or less. Secondly, for a bold bright lip, think fuchia’s, blood orange and bright red. Lastly, it’s all about the defined eyebrows that are seen on the likes of Lilly Collins and Cara Delevingne. They are here to stay ladies. page 26 gcmag - A Generation of Change october 2014 page 27 page 28 gcmag - A Generation of Change october 2014 page 29 ghalichi lillyghalichi The Modern Day Money Maker Running four businesses is challenging enough- doing it in a pair of nine inch Louboutins is just another day for Lilly Ghalichi. They say beauty and looks will only get you so far; but for this woman beauty and glam gets you it all. Lilly Ghalichi became instantly memorable when she stepped onto the scene of Bravo’s reality show ‘Shahs of Sunset’ in one of her impeccably put together ensembles – coordinating everything from her designer lashes to her perfectly pedicured toes. When it comes to glam, this girl never misses a beat. page 30 gcmag - A Generation of Change october 2014 page 31 glam Written By: Kayla Mitchell Realising the potential of her OTT glam life, she utilises her adoring fan base to help build an instant following to her businesses, we like to call the #Ghalichiglam effect. At first glance you might be quick to cast this Persian Barbie doll off as another privileged social butterfly with a future in endorsements and paid appearances before her, a path fairly predetermined by her reality TV beginnings. With her bandwagon of infatuated followers enraptured by her every post, tweet, outfit suggestion and selfie- it’s only fair some of us might assume LG is simply a part of the Hollywood it crowd, running with the a-league and lapping the attention until she is benched for the next big thing that rises to overnight fame. Whatever the assumptions, truth be told serious business potential lies in the lap of the woman with such a cult following. And for Lilly it’s that very following, coupled with her background in Law and business (Yep, she used to be an Attorney!) that led to her uber success and in the fashion and beauty industry. Lilly now heads swimwear, jewellery, cosmetics and apparel lines, each with millions of adoring customers worldwide ready to ‘totally die’ for what she might do next. Crazy right? Or genius? Photographed on the daily, Lilly is usually snapped hopping out of a Bentley toting a luxury handbag and bedazzled in diamond jewellery, so it came as a surprise to us that she was brought up just a regular girl in a struggling household. “I did not have a golden spoon in my mouth growing up, in fact just the opposite. My parents were immigrants who spoke no English and tried at least 10 different businesses before they found success as Entrepreneurs. Seeing them struggle but never give up moulded my ambition and drive in life”. page 32 gcmag - A Generation of Change october 2014 We caught up with the self-confessed workaholic just days after NYFW where she showcased her WML clothing collection. The super affordable-meets high end designs of WantMyLook received glowing reviews by criticsand the best part? We can actually afford it! Still on a fashion high from the NYFW buzz, Lilly explained to GCMAG, “I had so much excitement for this moment. So much work went into it- a culmination of two months of solid work and planning.” But who can forget the moments we were first acquainted with Lilly on Shahs of Sunset, exposing the ups and downs of her friendships with cast members like Reza, MJ and GG. The budding entrepreneur admits tensions grew between herself and the others by her choice to place personal business endeavours before her commitment to the show. ‘I was not like the others, I don’t really like to party or drink so I was kind of the odd one out. They all knew each other for years. We lead very different lives”. We know what you’re thinking – So why did she go on the show in the first place then!? Lilly candidly explained, “Fame is the least important aspect in why I do what I do. They asked me to be on the first season to which I said no. I decided to go on the second season because I saw it as great exposure and a platform to help grow my businesses. Money is not everything, but the feeling as a woman to make money and watch your success and businesses grow is just so rewarding. It’s contagious”. For now, the super busy fashionista is busy blogging, designing and building her Ghalichiglam empire one pair of ‘Swimgerie’ and ‘Lilly Lashes’ at a time. Shop all her labels and follow her blow on the website . www.lillyghalichi.com. We talk like old friends, and I quickly realise that Tegan’s sweet, concerned demeanour immediately pushes past any clichéd, pageant queen stereotype. Tegan Martin automatically distinguishes herself as a salt of the earth, genuine, sincere young lady. She is Miss Universe Australia, 2014. “You know, it sounds very clichéd, but my Mum is such an inspiration to me. She is just so strong and resilient. I’m also reading the book Everything To Live For: The Inspirational Story of Turia Pitt at the moment as well – Turia what an inspirational and powerful woman. It just goes to show that someone who has gone through so much can still achieve such amazing things. It’s such an interesting read. I read a lot…” Tegan says admiringly, a positive and confident tone in her voice. Tegan Martin is a very busy lady – a typical day for her involves a number of media interviews and conferences, events, photo shoots, guest appearances and public speaking. “I get to wear so many pretty clothes! Every girls dream. I’m so blessed to be the ambassador for Novo shoes now. They’re such beautiful shoes and now I have a killer collection! All my friends are so jealous. I’m really excited for the winter campaign to come.” she laughs. Alongside this, Tegan is sponsored by Elucent Skincare page 42 gcmag - A Generation of Change october 2014 Written By: Clare Standfast as well as renowned make up brand, Face of Australia. When I ask Tegan about her makeup and beauty regime, favourite things and tips, her voices races, excited and animated. “Oh wow… this is a tough one! There are so many wonderful things! Elucent Skincare is so amazing. I absolutely love their products. My favourite one at the moment is their whitening eye cream. It’s my secret weapon! Also, the mineral foundation from Face of Australia is beautiful. It’s not too heavy and it’s great coverage. I always love a good smoky eye as well! However, my main love will always lie with my fragrance, Chanel Mademoiselle. It’s definitely my signature – my friends always know it’s me coming! (laughs). Because I am a qualified hairdresser, I’m extremely vigilant about looking after my hair. I always use a heat protecting spray for curling and straightening my hair, and I love the Wella Hydrate Mask. We used to use Wella products in my old salon so I’m a bit biased!” she smiles. When asked about fashion, Tegan notes her love for Australian designers. “Rachel Gilbert, Sass & Bide, Alex Perry … these are my main fashion idols! In terms of sports gear, I absolutely love Lorna Jane. I have a lot of their clothes to wear now – I’m so grateful. They’re beautiful. I’ve always been a fan of bright colours! When I’m just relaxing, I have a pretty simplistic, casual look – I can never go past a nice pair of jeans and a blouse.” Not only is she a beautiful lady, but a very smart lady as well. Tegan has been studying page 43 page 44 gcmag - A Generation of Change october 2014 page 45 music martin nutritional science, and has always had an interest in mental health. When asked about it, a tone of importance threads through Tegan’s voice. “Mental health is something, I feel, that isn’t discussed or understood enough in the community. It’s so prominent but no one really knows, or notices, that it’s there. I’ve been given the opportunity to speak about this and it’s something that’s really close to my heart, and something that I would really love to influence for the better. It’s the same for nutritional science – it’s something that I’m passionate about, and being Miss Universe Australia, I have such an opportunistic platform to be able to speak about these things. My passion began for nutritional science when I moved away from conventional medicine and started looking at healthy lifestyle options. I would love to be able to influence children’s understanding on health and nutrition – not to be skinny, but to be healthy – ultimately, to live longer. I know that I’ve cut sugars, particularly processed sugars, out of my diet, and it’s made a world of difference. I really want to be able to promote and encourage healthy lifestyles for people.” Tegan Martin is a beautiful, vibrant, down to earth young lady, radiating a sense of comfort and ease that is obtained only from being content in your own skin. Her future as Miss Universe Australia is bright, with her interests and passions one of many flagships amongst the limitless opportunities ahead of her. Tegan’s demeanour and intelligence will only bring her higher and, Australia’s unparalleled representative for Miss Universe. follow tegans journey on page 46 gcmag - A Generation of Change october 2014 page 47 COCONUT LOVE If you’re not lucky enough to reside in sunny Queensland, Australia, like us, where the concept of winter doesn’t seem to exist, you may currently be experiencing an unhealthy dose of the winter blues. ReDefined builds upon tyDi’s critically acclaimed 2013 release, ‘Hotel Rooms’, and his 2011 smash album ‘Shooting Stars’, promising to deliver even bigger and bolder sounds. Last time we spoke you were releasing the album Hotel Rooms. Up next is ReDefined, what can we expect from the new album? ReDefined is my new studio album that represents more of the sound my fans have been expecting from me. My last real studio album was ‘Shooting Stars’ in 2011 which was very eclectic but still within the realm of ‘EDM’. Since 2011 I have been working with artists all over the world to make ‘Redefined’ and it’s finally ready! I wouldn’t compare it at all to ‘Hotel Rooms’; that one was a side project of all my non-edm work… basically everything from ambient, to orchestral and film score type music. Redefined returns to the side of me that you’d hear at my shows. I wrote and went through about 300 songs to narrow it down to the final 20 that made it on Redefined, so I can guarantee you that it’s strong… not a single filler. You’ve been doing a lot of gigs in North America & Asia. What’s been your favourite gig so far in 2014 and why? Probably ‘Paradiso’ festival which is about 2 hours out from Seattle, I played MainStage to 50,000 people in open air. Such an incredible feeling! What upcoming shows are you looking forward to the most? Wow it’s too hard to say, I’m booked out until the end of the year all over the world. I’m in love with so many of the places I’ll be visiting! It’ll be great to play in NYC again, also Seattle and San Francisco are hot page 54 gcmag - A Generation of Change october 2014 spots for me. Beach gigs are awesome too, Hawaii, Ibiza… all of that kicks ass! What makes you decide to play a particular record during one of your sets? Is there a criteria other than pure subjectivity, for selecting what to play at a gig? It’s all about how I feel and how I interpret the vibe of the audience. I don’t like DJ sets that stay in one place. Too many people just play an hour of bangers, it’s constant intensity with no room to breathe. My shows are all about contrast, I use moments of calm and emotion to make room for the explosive tracks. Instead of thinking of individual songs I approach my show like one long journey, each group of songs being chapters with peaks and troughs. Waves.. What are currently your main challenges as a DJ? What is it about DJing, compared to, say, producing your own music that makes it interesting for you? DJing and producing are two completely different arts, barely comparable. Being a good DJ requires knowledge of crowd reactions and how to control it with song selection, but it doesn’t necessarily require musical knowledge. DJing is about using songs in an improvised structure to give a crowd an experience. Being a writer / producer for me is about being a musician, knowing music, understanding chords, harmonies, counter melodies, songwriting and of course putting it together to create a song that didn’t exist before. I’d like to see more producers with knowledge of music theory. What do you personally consider to be the most intelligent decisions of your artistic career? To study music, learn the importance of songwriting and get really geeky with the technology. Knowing music is knowing a language, when you can speak that language properly you can create songs that change lives. Not just throwing a beat together that makes people dance, I mean songs that you’ll remember 20 years from Written By: Matt Fendley page 55 now. That’s was my goal with ‘ReDefined’. Last time we talked you were spending most of your time in LA, you’ve travelled a lot now, what is your favourite location to chill out and top location to party? I live full time in LA, so that’s my top chill spot. I don’t go out much in LA, I hang with friends and go to bars at most. The weekends are just so crazy, it’s actually hard to get time off. If I have a few days I’ll sneak off to a beach somewhere :) Tell us about the work you’ve been doing with SOL REPUBLIC The SOL REPUBLIC team are passionate about quality, not just selling a product, they want to be involved with the musicians who are doing things differently. That’s why I love the brand. We have some awesome custom tyDi headphones and something cool coming for the new album ;) What have you been up to back in Australia? How has life changed for you when you get back home? Besides the touring I’ve been spending time on the Sunshine Coast with my family. I don’t get to see them much anymore with all this touring so it’s great to just kick back with them. I left all my friends and family behind when I moved to LA, it’s going to be hard to leave again next week. What’s next for tyDi? REDEFINED - this album is my best work yet. I’m insanely excited to find out how fans react to it. Then lots of touring!! In our last interview you didn’t disclose the details of where the name tyDi came from, any chance you’d let that one go today? It’s secret ;) page 56 gcmag - A Generation of Change october 2014 page 57 TOP music NEW MUSIC Tydi erika jayne painkillr Redefined Her new record PAINKILLR lived up to this expectation. Reaching number one on the Billboard charts shortly after its release, Erika’s new track combines high energy dance with blaring trumpet melodies reminiscent of the 1930s. Her love for “the fashion, the style, and the attitude of that era” inspired her to draw on this era of music to produce a fresh sound. We cant give you a better wrap up then from the man himself Tydi says: ReDefined is my new studio album that represents more of the sound my fans have been expecting from me. My last real studio album was ‘Shooting Stars’ in 2011 which was very eclectic but still within the realm of ‘EDM’. With his genetically blessed good looks, smooth voice and charming personality, Nathaniel has moved to declared himself as the next big thing in the pop and R&B world. On the day we talked to him, Nathaniel was enjoying the sunny Queensland weather and it almost seemed cruel for me to pull him away from that. But Nathaniel was very gracious as he took me through his path to stardom. He explains that very early on in his life, he was touched and inspired by music. This musical influence was partly from church and the choirs that Nathaniel sung in as a young boy. But he was also heavily influenced by his family. “Growing up in South Africa my dad had a huge family, with lots of brothers and sisters, so we would always have large family gatherings. We had a swimming pool and my uncles would bring the guitars out and everyone would just sing and have a great time,” Nathaniel says. Fast forward twenty years or so and Nathaniel had landed Guy Sebastian as his mentor on the X Factor. While he made an earlier exit than he would have hoped, ultimately finishing sixth, Nathaniel could not be more grateful for his experience on the show. “My time on the X-Factor was awesome and I learnt so much. It helped me grow into a proper artist and it seems to have worked out pretty well for me so far! The show taught me how to open up and how to hold the audience in the palm of your hand; and also how to work page 60 gcmag - A Generation of Change october 2014 Written By: Erin Ibbott page 61 music the stage,” explains Nathaniel. I ask him whether he ever feels the need to shed the reality pop star image and disassociate himself from the X Factor, but he replies: “You know, I don’t really mind. I wouldn’t have had it any other way and I am proud to have been part of a show like that. I’m cool with it.” And the X Factor seems to have given Nathaniel a great starting platform to help him rise to celebrity status. Since the X Factor Nathaniel has been busy; signing a recording contract with Sony Music Australia, producing a two times Platinum single, “You,” touring with Jessica Mauboy and he has just released his latest single, “Live Louder,” which is currently tearing up our airwaves. page 62 Nathaniel says that supporting Jessica Mauboy on her To the End of the Earth tour has been one of his favourite experiences so far. “It was incredible! It was the first chance I’ve really had to perform on a major tour – we did thirty shows over two months, all across Australia. I got to see parts of the country I had never seen before, such as Mackay and Bundaberg, lots of regional areas. It was such a great feeling to be back on the stage, doing what I love, performing to great crowds,” he says. We also get talking about his new single, which he admits to dancing along to in the car, just like the rest of us! Nathaniel explains what it feels like to hear his music on the radio: “It is a really special moment, especially when I am by myself in the car and I hear them announce my name. It’s great that the radio stations are showing me so much love.” Nathaniel is also very excited for his next venture – Soulfest, Australia’s first annual neo-soul, jazz and hip-hop festival. “Soulfest will be amazing – you have to come! Bring your friends, family, mum and dad... unfortunately you can’t bring your dog, but bring everyone else! It’s a great opportunity for me to perform some new songs and show a different side of me. I’ll get to do some new songs that I haven’t done before and it’s just going to be really fun,” he says. In some ways though, Nathaniel seems very far removed from all this, he is refreshingly humble and gcmag - A Generation of Change october 2014 enjoys playing the PlayStation, going to the movies, and hanging out with friends in his spare time. But he has big dreams for the future and we are certainly tagging along for the ride. “I hope for the next ten, fifteen, twenty years, that I will still be doing what I’m doing. I love my job and some people only get to do it for a couple of years and then it drops off, but I want to keep doing this for as long as I can. I also want to do more travelling and see the world. I’d love to branch out internationally and gain fans all over the world. That would have to be my biggest dream.” Nathaniel will also be supporting Mariah Carey on her upcoming Aus tour and his single Live Louder has just gone Gold page 63 Everyone has their own idea of what Paradise means to them, therefore from the moment your feet touch the white sands of Plantation Island, your 4 day, 3 night journey is all, yours. After appearing on the club scene in 2007 with her hit ‘Rollercoaster’, Erika found herself on top of the US dance charts for the first time. Her debut album ‘Pretty Mess’ released two years later, replicating the success of her previous work and earning her six number ones. This impressive feat secures her a place among pop stars Rihanna and the Pussy Cat Dolls who experienced similar levels of success with their debuts. Erika still remembers the first time she saw her name next to number one, “I will never forget it! It’s an incredible feeling and I hope to be seeing it a lot more.” Her new record PAINKILLR lived up to this expectation. The dynamic energy of this track is reflected in her hectic schedule. Recently returning from Manila after shooting content for her new EP, Erika has also just finished work on set for the PAINKILLR music video, available for viewing later this year. In between travelling, recording and photo shoots, she has landed many high profile collaborations for her new EP. Among the line-up is top music producer Scott Storch. “I always learn from collaborating with other artists, that’s the beauty in it. Each one of them brought such unique skill and flow to the table, but Scott Storch’s ability to write hits is a true gift,” Erika revealed about one of the industry’s most in-demand talents. So what can we expect to see from this blonde bombshell next? She describes her new EP as “Sexy. Dark. Sexy”. Dropping later this year, the brand new record promises to push your collection of club and dance music to the next level. After such a positive start to 2014, where does Erika see herself in a year’s time? “Somewhere fabulous, touring the world and making people dance!” page 66 gcmag - A Generation of Change october 2014 Written By: Marnie Buchecker page 67 erika jayne page 68 gcmag - A Generation of Change october 2014 page 69 violent soho music It’s been said “You can expect great things from people with passion” and these guys hit the proverbial nail on the head. I’m talking of course about Brisbane based suburban punk rock band Violent Soho. With an on point grungy sound, killer guitars and an infectious punk rock attitude these four boys from Mansfield Brisvegas are pulling crowds like never before. GC Mag had a chance to chat to James recently about tours, label signings, big day out and sandwiches. No strangers to the stage, Violent soho have been shaking up and rocking out venues for the better part of a decade now playing gigs ranging from Ric’s bar and Coolangata hotel, to more recent festivals such as Big Day Out and Falls Festival. Their growing popularity evident in the enormous crowd they drew to watch their set at Splendour In the Grass this year with one of the largest audiences of the weekend, a crowd of 20,000 strong, all chanting the bands chorus to the breakthrough single ‘Covered in Chrome’ “Hell F@#k yeah!” When asked if he prefers small gigs or festivals the reply was a mix of both with a particular soft spot for being invited to play Big Day Out at Metricon stadium earlier this year. The band is excited to be headlining at the upcoming 10th anniversary of ‘Festival of the sun” in Port Macquarie this December alongside acts such as The Jezebel’s and Shihad. September 30 marks an exciting occasion for the boys with the release of their album ‘Hungry ghost’ (which debuted at #6 in the Aria charts) in the US. Signing with the Iconic LA punk Label SideOneDummy, who has represented greats such as Mxpx, Flogging Molly and Andrew Jackson Jihad is definitely a career highlight for Guitarist James Tidswell being a childhood fan of many of the labels artists. He said at 12 he wasn’t allowed Dookie (by greenday) as a child because of the inappropriate references, but instead was given a copy of Mxpx’s “Life in General” by his grandmother and his interest in punk rock grew from there. “So it’s all from an MxPx CD that my grandma bought me and now I’m singing to SideOneDummy and it’s fricken awesome” James also recently appeared in a documentary titled “The truth about money in music” by director and friend Dan Graetz in which he gives the public a bit of insight in to the reality behind Australia’s Music Industry ”There’s just not enough room these days for people to make music and it isn’t because they want to “make it”, it has to be, purely ,because you want to make music and it’s just clogging up the pipeline for people that are stoked to play in front of 50 people, so I was just sorta trying to encourage people to not be in a band, if their doing it for any other reason than you want to play music. Because if you just wanna play music then, you know, a show at your mates party is gonna be sick. So that’s the kind of people we need making music, that are stoked to be there.” Violent Soho certainly don’t disappoint on that front, their music is passionate, their live shows electric and their sound is like no other. These really are boys who play music for the love of it, “For those about to rock, I salute you”. page 70 gcmag - A Generation of Change october 2014 Written By: Kelly Hynes page 71 page 72 gcmag - A Generation of Change october 2014 page 73 page 74 gcmag - A Generation of Change october 2014 page 75 new found glory music THE PATH OF RESURRECTION It’s been a while between drinks for Florida outfit New Found Glory, but the boys are back, and ready to reclaim the title as poppunk kings. ’Resurrection’ will see the group embark on a cathartic new path, teaming fresh melodies with many of the distinct rock nuances fans have come to know and love. A testament to the natural maturation and creative vision of one of the music industries key pioneers, ‘Resurrection’ is a walking attestation of sorts - punk isn’t dead. Bridget Judd spoke to drummer Cyrus Bolooki. As far as performing goes, how does Resurrection differ from your previous albums? What can fans expect? We all are very proud of Resurrection -we feel that it is definitely one of the best New Found Glory records to date! I think that this record is different than other NFG records. One of the main differences is that when writing this record, we really focused on the fact that we are now a four piece, with only one guitarist, and therefore we page 76 tried to write songs that didn’t rely on a lot of layered guitars or any other studio trick like that. It’s a little more straightforward than past releases for us, just a guitar riff, bass, drums, and vocals… I think fans will like this record because it still brings the energy that NFG has always been known for -- and also stays with our theme of catchy lyrics and singalong parts. When playing these new songs live, I think they will blend in with our entire catalogue and make for an overall great show. Your music to date seems to be very much rooted in, and inspired by, personal experiences - what kind of content can we expect on your latest release? Is there a thematic progression to it? Our music is always inspired by personal experiences and in general anything around us. This record is no exception. However, in the past we had been writing a majority of songs about relationships and things like that. There are still a few songs that deal with those themes, but on gcmag - A Generation of Change october 2014 Written By: Bridgett Judd page 77 Resurrection there are also songs that deal with other topics, like how to deal with hard times, overcoming and getting through struggles in your life, and just life in general. music If there is an overall theme for the record, it could definitely be summed up by the word Resurrection. I think there is a lot to say about being able to move forward from tough times; to look forward instead of dwelling on the past; and to really be able to look inside and think about how you want to live your life. Were you inspired by anything in particular in the writing of Resurrection? When writing this record, as we had just gone from a five piece to a four piece, we tried to look at bands in the past that were able to achieve a huge sound from just one guitarists. Bands like Rage Against The Machine and Pantera, although they sound nothing like NFG, were inspirations in the sense that those bands were able to achieve a lot with only one guitarist; and even though there are studio tricks out there that can allow one to mimic having an infinite number of players in a band, a lot of these older records were made with only one guitar track or riff going at once, not multiple layers of guitars. Luckily for us all of the writing, both musically and lyrically, came naturally even with all of the circumstances at the time. At the end of the day we just did what we always do -- try and write music that we think not only our fans would enjoy, but also we would enjoy playing live on stage. We tried to keep the same energy and power that NFG has always been known for in these songs, and we still continued to write songs that could appeal to anyone yet still come from our own personal thoughts and experiences. Was there an ‘end goal’ in mind, in regards to the kind of statement you wanted the album to make? At the early stages of writing, I think we were just focusing on writing any kind of songs/lyrics that felt natural to us. However, I think after we finished writing the song “Resurrection”, which actually happened pretty early in the process, we started to realize that the theme of that song page 78 gcmag - A Generation of Change october 2014 could take on larger meaning for the record, and that some of the other songs we had been starting to write were similar in theme. So in that sense, there was a little bit of a statement to be made. But overall, like all of our past records, we really just try to take a “snapshot” of our own lives and experiences at the time of writing/ recording, and that’s usually what comes out in our music and lyrics. Our ‘end goal’ with any record is always the same -- music that’s catchy yet powerful; fun yet realistic; and stuff that both fans and us can enjoy equally. With seven previous studio albums under your belt, did you find the writing process easier this time around? The writing process was a little different this time around, as we had just gone from five members to four, however, it was enjoyable and fairly relaxing overall. A few of us lived pretty close to each other, and for the most part, the writing process would go like this: I would drive up to Chad’s house with a portable recording rig and have him record some guitar riffs and/or full songs on guitar. I would then take those tracks back to my house and lay some drums over the tracks and send them out to everyone. After a little bit, we would have some rough lyrics written and then Jordan and I would again drive up to Chad’s house and record Jordan singing these lyrics while we were literally sitting at Chad’s dining room table! By doing this so early on in the process, we actually made so much progress that we pretty much had the entire album written and finished before we even stepped foot in the studio to record a note! This made for a very easy recording experience and allowed us to focus on the big picture and record as a whole as opposed to worrying about a whole bunch of things while we were tracking the album. When can we expect to see you guys in Australia? I’m glad you asked! New Found Glory will be back in Australia in February as part of Soundwave XV…we couldn’t be happier to be coming back as we always have fun in Australia and we have so many great fans there! page 79 bts sneakpreview behind the scenes of our end of year issue The news is just in Dami Im is set to release her highly anticipated album Heart beats on October 17 and we thought we would along with this announcement give you a sneak preview of our End of year issue with the lovely Dami featuring on the cover and inside HEART BEATS sees Dami Im realise her long awaited dream to release a studio album complete with her own material which represents her as an artist.
