The Carousel Trader December, 1985 $1.50 Vol. 1, No. 4 Page 2 THE CAROUSEL TRADER, Marcellus, Ml 49067 Editor's Column I hope you have enjoyed reading TH E CAROUSEL TRAD ER as much as I have enjoyed writing the articles and putting It together . It is a new adventure for me, and I have learned a lot, and have much more to learn. My husband, Walt Loucks , is learning to be a photographer so we can have better pictures in up-coming Issues. Since August , I have traveled to New York, Canada , North Carolina, Maryland , and Grand Rapids , Michigan in search of stories. I have met many wonderful people. I can't help but wonder what the comi ng year has in store. I have promoted THE CAROUSEL TRADER everywhere I went , and have distributed well over 2000 copies of the September, October and November issues . Many have been sent out as " complimentary copies." Over 150 antique stores have been contacted and are starting to respond. Some major changes for 1986 are in the advertising rates . The 25% layout charge has been eliminated , and a 10% discount for repeat ads has been added. I want to make advertising in THE CAROUSEL TRADER easy and uncomplicated . Thank you all for your support and encouraging letters. 1986 should be a great year! Please do not forget why we really celebrate Christmas. God sent his only Son to a humble birth in a manger, to live with us, teach us, then die on the cross , taki ng our sins away. He then rose again as the living proof of eternal li fe . In the main gallery will be " Magical Horses on Whimsical Courses," the Krasl 's second magnificent carousel exhibition. The salon will feature two shows : etchings of Arthur Geisert and animal sculptures by Wi lliam Allen . The small gallery will house the recent work of the Berrien Fiber Guild. The gala recept ion for these four shops will be Sunday, November 24 from 1 to 4 p.m . Many speci al surprises, including clowns and freshly popped popcorn , are planned for this opening . Holi day refreshments will be served by the Friends of the Arts; the publ ic is welcome to attend. The main gallery's transformation into the nostalgic world of the carousel was conceived and executed by St. Joseph residents AI and Dagne Schoenbach, owners of the carousel an imals. The eighteen carved animals will be positioned around a revolving platform with eight-foot mirrors and thousands of magical lights creating the carousel and giving the horses an appearance of " prancing ." Music from a mighty antique band organ will flow through the galleries, and a whimsical ceramic clown will greet visitors when they enter. A revolving platform with lights will feature one of the horses, and there will also be a "climbaboard " horse so that children may hop on and " pretend. " The Krasl 's first carousel show in 1981 , " Sights and Sounds, Around and Around ," attracted thousands of visitors to the then-new center. The horses in this year's show are almost all different, due to the Schoenbachs' ever-expanding collection . One special horse who is returning , however, is the valuable " Carmel " from the Silver Beach carousel , which the Schoenbachs tracked down in 1980 and carefully preserved . The quest to " bring home" one of the Silver Beach horses led the Schoenbachs to Montana, New Mexico, Oregon and New Jersey. The Schoenbachs have been collecting for 15 years and have found horses in antique stores (sometimes in deplorable condition propped against the outside of buildings) , at auctions, from other collectors , and "on-thestreets. " According to Mrs. Schoenbach , creating carousel horses is a true art form . Many carvers have tried to dulpicate this art with little success . " The original craftsmen were wood carvers from Europe, back in the 1890's," she related. " Our oldest horse is 100 years old , carved in 1895, and our youngest was carved 60 years ago in 1920." Carving horses was replaced by metal and fiber glass around 1920. "There were only seven or eight master carvers ," she continued, "and ou r goal was to collect one horse from every master carver and / or company . We achieved our goal this year with the acquisition of a Dentzel carousel piece." The Schoenbach collection includes many horses some natural wood , some professionally restored, others they have restored , and some are as they found them. Schoenbach is currently working to restore a zebra to its original paint. It can take one year to restore an animal, and the Schoenbachs always bring the animals to their natural state , using dowel rods and pegs and no nails. I spotted some of them this summer riding carousels. It seems that they always want to make children happy. I never did locate Rudolf, but I'm sure he's out there somewhere. I found Comet and Donner in North Carolina, Cupid in Toronto and Blitzen flew in from Germany on a Heyn carousel. If you want to see them, you must search diligently, because there is never more than one on a carousel. On some carousels, you won't see them at all, and don't look for them on Christmas Eve because they won't be there. If you want to know where these deer were hiding, see page 10.
