Bring your shoes and favorite carol arrangements to share. The pipe organ was installed in 1998 by Phil Parkey of Parkey Organbuilders with some more recent enhancements. It is comprised of Moller and Pilcher pipework and a 3-manual drawknob Reuter console. It has 23 pipe ranks and ten digital pedal ranks plus Zimbelstern. The Great, Swell and Pedal speaks from downstairs through grillwork. The Choir division is located in the music room. Directions It’s easy to find, just 4 blocks behind Phipps Plaza off Peachtree! Drive North on Peachtree Rd, go past Lenox Square and at the North corner of Phipps Plaza, turn left on Wieuca Rd, just in front of Wieuca Rd Baptist Church. Stay in the right lane and go to the 4th street to the right, N Ivy Rd. Turn right and go to the bottom of the hill (past 4 speed bumps) to #4124 (on the brick mailbox). It’s a large red brick English Tudor home up on a hill with a long driveway. There are about 3 to 4 parking spots at the top of the driveway reserved for handicapped, otherwise, there is plenty of street parking. If you are coming from Roswell Road in Sandy Springs, turn left on Wieuca Road and continue past the I-400 bridge overpass and take the 2nd street to the left, N Ivy Rd. Go to 4124 at the bottom of the hill on the left. The Organizer 2 December 2011 3 December 2011 A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN ~ My thanks goes out to Jason Payne of Briarlake Baptist Church for hosting our "Double Header" with Dr. Sandra Soderlund and organist Bryan Anderson on Saturday, November 12. Dr. Soderlund's lecture on the life and works of Louis WELCOME Vierne was very informative. Thanks also to masterclass participants Aaron Dixon, Faye Kesler and John Sabine for their excellent performances. After a delicious NEW MEMBERS meal prepared by Chef Deborah Vantrece, the day ended with a mini-recital by Ron Carter eighteen year old Bryan Anderson, who left us dazzled by his amazing technique. We're all very proud of what Bryan has accomplished and look forward to what Dr. Dwight M. Jones the future holds for this talented young man. We have a wonderful post-Christmas party planned for Tuesday evening, Margo. M Truslow SPC December 27 at the home of Warren Williams and Ken Baggs in Buckhead. Our chapter enjoyed Warren and Ken's hospitality a few years back and they have once again graciously consented to welcome us into their beautiful home. A lovely 3 manual, 23 rank Pilcher/Moller pipe organ is installed in the house. There will be plenty of open console time - bring your organ shoes and some holiday music to share. Looking ahead to the new year, we eagerly anticipate hearing Dr. Timothy Albrecht play the magnificent Jaeckel organ at Emory University's Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts on Tuesday, January 10, 2012. This is our first official Atlanta Chapter program at the Schwartz Center - my sincere thanks goes out to all who have made this event possible. May hope, peace, joy and love surround you this holiday season and throughout the coming year! Best wishes, Jeff Harbin, Dean Calling All Students! We're looking for students of all ages to participate in our annual Chapter Student Program again this year. This event will take place February 11th at Central Presbyterian Church, located on Peachtree Road in Buckhead. Atlanta Chapter Scholarship winners for 2011-12 are requested to present a piece, and other members of the chapter currently studying organ are encouraged to participate. Please contact Tim Young to reserve a program slot and to receive information regarding setting up practice times. Last date to join the program will be the third week of January. Last years' program featured a great number of performers and provided the chapter members a most entertaining program. We look forward to hearing YOU play this year! The anthem will be a setting of Psalm 100, "O be joyful...". Commissioned composer Dr. Arlan Sunnarborg shared the following about this work in progress: "The text was selected for its great programming flexibility and potential use both liturgically and in concert settings. The piece opens with imitative contrapuntal entrances folded into a mini-toccata, using the organ to create pulsequickening razzle dazzle. It sounds much more difficult than it actually is because it is calculated to lie well under the fingers and feet. In fact, my goal for the piece, overall, is that it will be fun to prepare and constructed so as to adapt well for organists and for choirs of varying sizes and abilities." Please make your check payable to The Atlanta Chapter AGO, earmark it 'Music Commissions', and mail it to Dan Pruitt at: 1096 Chantilly Crescent, NE Atlanta, GA 30324 Be sure to include on a separate sheet: "Donation from _____, made in Honor/Memory of ____________." I hope you will act as the spirit moves you, rather than postpone since the busy holiday season seems to take on a life of its own! Heartfelt THANKS to you for being part of this worthwhile, exciting endeavor, for our Chapter and for posterity. Thanks also to Committee Members Dan Pruitt, Gwyn Bacon, Melissa Smith, Executive Board liaison John Sabine, and to Bill Callaway who channels toward this end, funds from your purchases of Used Music at AGO! ~ Joanne Cobb Brown, chair for Commissioning New Music December 2011 A Chapter Event You Will Not Want to Miss!
