Despite the credit crunch. People still need to buy new vehicles. Hawaii Auto Outlook anticipates that 52,000 new retail vehicles will be sold this year through Hawaii’s franchised new car dealerships. And while dealers are experiencing some shift to smaller vehicles, large-vehicle sales here have not been affected here as much as the mainland. Hawaii’s larger families and active outdoor lifestyles just require pickup trucks, SUVs, station wagons, and minivans. In Hawaii, 3.42 people live under one roof, on average, compared to the national family average size of 3.14. Also, Hawaii, as a state, remains below mainland averages in miles driven per vehicle—with 9,990 miles compared to 12,500 miles. That 20% fewer miles driven here impacts the family budget less, even though some of this affect is offset by Hawaii’s slightly higher gas prices. The shift here to smaller vehicles and alternative power plants (hybrids), however, is still being felt. In three years, automakers will be bringing all-electric, highperformance vehicles to market. These overnight plug-in, 110-voltrecharge vehicles, with their 100-mile battery ranges, will have similar features and performance characteristics as their gasoline-powered counterparts. They’ll recharge overnight and also while parked at workplaces. The new lithium-ion batteries will have 150,000-mile initial use and life-after that on the secondary market, with final disposal issues now having been resolved. With the features on our current inventory of gasoline-powered vehicles still impressive and prices and incentives genuinely attractive, it will be consumers who benefit from the ride during the transition as dealers balance ways to bring the emerging new technologies to market. We’ll learn about what’s in store for the industry at the HADA convention this year, Oct. 2-5, on Maui. Damien Farias has secured attractive 2004-level room rates for the all-suites hotel. The question about gas mileage was the first one asked by 95% of those who came through, said one automaker’s factory representative who staffed this year’s First Hawaiian International Auto Show in March. Attendance was up 3.5% over last year. But show-goers seemed to be simply saying this: green is keen if it really means lean. HADA’s NADA director Joe Hanley played a significant role in the CAFE (35 mpg, mileage-setting) discussions during his trips to Washington to visit Hawaii’s Senator Daniel Inouye, so the Association has been closely following all the developments in gas mileage improvement and power plant changes offered by the automakers. HADA DATA—from the post-show survey, show-goers were: • 65% male, 35% female. • 64% intending to buy within 24 months • 62% affected by gas prices, while 38% said gas prices had no affect or were not sure. • 35% first time attendees. • 91% who said the experience at a dealership on their most recent purchase was “positive” 12 KSSK’s Larry Price and Michael Perry discussed the Show on their Saturday morning show HPD’s auto theft detail staffed a booth at the show for the first time James Tucker, who broadcasts his show on AM1080, KWAI conducted a 2-hour live broadcast from the show floor (L-R) Jonelle Layfield, Miss Hawaii USA 2008 and Ashley Layfield, Miss Hawaii 2007 UH quarterback coach Nick Rolovich explains the “H” plate program. Beginning, last year, with Lifeline to Profits, a seminar for dealers, and following with four tracks in one week last year, for dealers, dealership finance officers, parts managers, and general managers, the training culminated with the March 22-25, 2008 New Car and Used Car Sales Training seminars. In each event, HADA paid up-front the $15,000-pertrack charged by NADA. The largest guarantee was $60,000, for the four-track week. And in each event, thanks to outstanding participation by HADA dealerships, the association was able to reach the goal of recovering the costs of fronting the funding for the training. HADA hopes that such NADA multi-track training seminars will continue, and Hawaii will be included on the new NADA training circuit. 27 Used Vehicle Seminar Attendees Royal Hawaiian Hotel • April 24-25, 2008 Big Island Toyota - Hilo Mike Camara JN Automotive Group Carlton Hill Servco Pacific Inc Auria Lee Tony Group Carlos Munevar Big Island Toyota - Kona Chris Kaaua Pflueger Acura Dave Anderson Servco Pacific Inc Marko Miljkovic Tony Honda Brad Auyoung Cars Plus Vince Mafnas Pflueger Auto Group John Paulachak Servco Pacific Inc Mostafa Saad Tony Honda Poki Pojas Cutter Ford Matt Wong Pflueger Honda John Bishop Servco Pacific Inc Allyn Wijnveldt Tony Hyundai Larry Davis Hawaii Mitsubishi Andrew Lee Pflueger Honda John Shreve Servco Pacific Inc Jadie Xu Tony Nissan Eric Hjertquist Honda Windward Joey Menasian Servco Pacific Inc David Dash Servco Pacific Inc David Yonamine Tony Volkswagen Wesley Amor JN Automotive Group Jason Hattori Servco Pacific Inc Lance Ichimura Servco Pacific Inc Chris Yoo Tony Volkswagen Joey Rose New Vehicle Seminar Attendees Royal Hawaiian Hotel • April 22-23, 2008 Cars Plus Vince Mafnas Honda Windward Keith Sakurai JN Automotive Group Mark Sherman Pflueger Auto Group Charlie Wong Cutter Ford Stanford Nakano JN Automotive Group Greg Jackson Pflueger Acura TJ Jones Pflueger Honda Don Brower Servco Pacific Inc Marko Miljkovic Servco Pacific Inc Allyn Wijnveldt Servco Pacific Inc Jadie Xu Tony Honda Moi Mabalot Tony Hyundai Allan Copello Tony Hyundai Jon Elvenia Tony Nissan Paul Le Clair Tony Nissan Mike West Mark Walsh, president of 1-4-1 new car sales training, makes a point at the breakfast preceding the training. KAM NAPIER, EDITOR REPRINTED BY PERMISSION OF HONOLULU MAGAZINE Increasingly, car owners are on the wrong side of the tracks. T his is how it starts. First, the city proposes a train. Then, the city worries that not enough people will ride the train to justify its $4.6 billion price. So the city starts looking for ways to take away your car, so you’ll have no choice but to ride the train. Well, OK, not your car (not yet, anyway) but in February, the City Council considered a bill to make sure that fewer people will have places to park when they come home from work. Of course, in the Orwellian nature of GovSpeak, this was described as “reducing off-street parking requirements.” See, when developers build an apartment that is 800 square feet or more, they are required to provide two parking spaces because apartments of that size are typically inhabited (and afforded) by two working adults. The city council wants to reduce that to a single parking space in any new “transitoriented developments” built around the train stations on the rail line. Explaining the bill in The Honolulu Advertiser, councilman Gary Okino stated that reduced parking requirements “maybe are meant to be an incentive [to encourage mass transit ridership], maybe they’re meant to make things a little more affordable around transit stations by not requiring additional cost items like parking.” None of this will be a problem, he assures us, because, “In other cities where they have [transitoriented development] … parking is less anyway because people just tend to not own cars.” This last assertion is nonsense and easily disproved. In developments such as Steele Park, Ore., planners similarly reduced the parking requirement to one space per unit. That, along with tax subsidies to lure people to live next to noisy train stations, made those dwellings more affordable. So who moved in? Young families with less money to spend on housing—that owned two or more cars anyway. Those “extra” cars now clutter the streets of Oregon’s transitoriented developments, the same way ohana multi-family zoning here turned narrow suburban streets into parking lots. market advantage, since we’d effectively banned them, but who are they to stand in the way of progress? Citizens might complain that they miss reading Surfer or The Economist, because HONOLULU doesn’t really take them where those other magazines used to take them. However, they are overlooking the communitarian wholesomeness that will follow from all of us, every day, sharing the same stories about this great city. By the way, Portland never seems short of cash when it’s time to lay down some track, but has a road maintenance backlog of $442 million. Honolulu, this is your future. For this metaphor to really match the transit/transportation reality, though, we have to assume that every one of you publishes your own magazine, read only by you. To induce you to read only HONOLULU, we’d have to make it as difficult as possible for you to publish and read your own magazine. I have to admit, city government’s power to force this train on us is enviable. Imagine if HONOLULU were published by the city. It would be so easy to dominate the media landscape. First, we’d “reduce the newsstand requirement” for stores that carry magazines. Instead of wasting valuable floor space on big racks filled with other titles, stores would only have to provide one rack for one magazine—this one. Then we’d “reduce the postal requirement” that has mail carriers lugging countless magazines to your mailboxes. Our competitors would quickly fold, or stop distributing in the Islands. That’s essentially what the city is up to. Your car is a competitor to its train. Interestingly, the city also knows you aren’t about to give it up. By the city’s estimate, barely 8 percent of all trips made in the city in 2030 will be by rail. This projection assumed a fully built transit system, but “minimal improvements to the H-1 freeway.” Why “minimal?” Why “reduced parking requirements?” In 2008, the people we elected to represent our interests seem bent on making sure that the other 92 percent of our trips—to work, to buy groceries, to drop off the kids at school—will be as miserable as they can possibly make them. Those other publishers might complain that we had an unfair Conveniently, none of them will be in office in 2030 to hear us complain. 29 Hawaii Auto Outlook ™ Comprehensive Information on the Hawaii Automotive Market Covering First Quarter, 2008 Volume 7, Number 2 Market Slump Worsens in First Quarter of 2008; Sales Low Point Likely Reached Clearly, these are highly uncertain times for the Hawaii new vehicle market. The economy has taken a turn for the worse, inflation is on the rise, gas prices are at all-time highs, credit markets remain unsettled, and household debt levels are reining in consumer spending. However, despite the relentless media coverage of these negative developments, there are some positive trends emerging for the new vehicle market. Below are answers to questions that provide focus on the outlook for new vehicle sales. How did the market do in the First Quarter of this year? Not good. New retail light vehicle registrations in the state declined 17.4% during the first three months of this year versus year earlier results. How bad will things get? At this point, we believe that the market has reached its low point. First Quarter registrations fell below 12,000 units. Although it’s unlikely that the state market will fall much lower, a significant increase over the next two quarters is highly unlikely. What is the main ingredient that will lead to an improvement in economic conditions? Household debt needs to be reduced. The easing in retail spending that has occurred over the past several months, combined with lower interest rates go a long way toward easing the debt burden, but permanent repairs to household balance sheets will be a lengthy process. When will the market start to improve and how good will it get? Auto Outlook believes that sales will improve (at least moderately) in 2009, with a significant, lasting recovery taking hold by 2010. As highlighted in the previous issue, an improving economy, the release of pentup demand, and emerging powertrain technologies should give the market a powerful boost within two years. Hawaii New Retail Light Vehicle Market - At a Glance The table above shows the top ten selling brands in the Hawaii market during the previous two quarters and the change in market share. 30 Traditional Domestic consists of vehicles sold by General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler, and excludes import nameplates Source for historical data: AutoCount, an Experian Company Hawaii Auto Outlook Markets Comparison First Quarter Decline in Hawaii Market Steeper Than U.S.; Smaller than California As just about all automotive retailers in Hawaii are keenly aware, the state’s new vehicle market got off to a slow start in 2008. But as shown on the graph to the right, several other markets declined at a faster pace. The graph shows the percent change in new retail light vehicle registrations during the first three months of this year versus the same period a year earlier for 12 selected state markets and the Nation. The Hawaii market declined 17.4% in the First Quarter, steeper than the 7.6% drop in the U.S., but smaller than the 20.1% and 19.3% declines in Arizona and California, Segment Watch Sub Compact Car Segment Posts Largest Market Share Gain in First Quarter Two primary factors are separating the winning segments from the losing ones so far this year: rising fuel prices and new products. With gas prices exceeding the $4 per gallon level, new vehicle shoppers in Hawaii are increasingly moving to smaller cars, with Sub Compact Car market share increasing 1.5 points during the first three months of this year versus a year earlier. A steady stream of new products, combined with SUV shoppers that are increasingly aware of fuel economy, gave a boost to the Mid Size Crossover SUV segment. Compact Pickup, Mid Size SUV, and Mini Van market share each declined by 0.5 of a point or more in the First Quarter. Production cutbacks, renewed emphasis on retail market results, and most importantly, a steady stream of critically acclaimed new products should go a long way toward bringing a halt to the market share erosion. As shown on the graph, Traditional Domestic brand market share declined a relatively slim 0.4 of a point in the First Quarter of this year versus a year earlier. Market share figures do not include import brands owned by GM and Ford. See note below graph. Brands included above: Big 3: GM (Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Hummer, and Pontiac, and Saturn), Ford (Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury), Chrysler (Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep). Japanese: Toyota (Toyota, Lexus, and Scion), Honda (Honda and Acura), Nissan (Nissan and Infiniti), Other (Isuzu, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Subaru, and Suzuki). European: VW (Audi, Bentley, and Volkswagen), BMW (BMW, Rolls Royce, and Mini), MB (Mercedes Benz), Ford (Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover, and Volvo), Other (Ferrari, Lotus, Maserati, and Saab). Korean: Hyundai and Kia. County Close-Up Each of the Four Island Markets Decline in First Quarter The table on the right provides a summary of each of Hawaii’s four retail light vehicle markets. The table is divided into four sections. Market Summary shows total new retail light vehicle registrations during the first three months of 2007 and 2008 and the percent change. The second and third sections show Light Truck and Big Three market share. The fourth section shows market share figures for the top 10 selling light vehicle brands in the state during the First Quarter of this year. The top rated county in each category is shaded. Observations: Registrations declined in each of the four markets, with the smallest decline in Oahu (down 14.8%) and the largest in the Big Island (down 26.3%). Light Truck market share declined in three of the four markets. Ford market share was 16.3% in Maui.
