"The centenary celebration project is a unique opportunity to newly develop and
establish the message and relevance of the National Women's Monument. It is also
an opportunity to create appreciation among all the communities of their joint
heritage and to take responsibility to preserve and develop the monument for
future generations."

PROJECT
National Women's Monument
Centenary Festival
CATEGORY
Cultural/heritage festival
Introduction
The Women's Monument in Bloemfontein
commemorates the suffering of some 27 000 Boer
women and children who died in the British
Concentration Camps during the Anglo-Boer War.
The monument is a Provincial Heritage site in the Free
State. Established in 1913, the monument
commemorated its centenary in 2013.
Message
Reconcilliation.
"This monument does not stand here as a symbol of torture
to anybody, nor is it intended to serve as an everlasting
abjuration; it has been placed here out of pure piety. It has
been erected not only out of the affluence of the wealthy,
but especially out of the penury of the needy. It is a nation's
homage in commemoration of those they loved."
Objectives
To create awareness about the National Women's
Monument and encourage partipation and ownership
among all communities. The festival also acted as
platform to launch Ideas 100, a development initiative
for the monument.
Event
The festival took place the 19th and 20th of October
at the National Women's Monument.
Publics to be reached
General public of South Africa and
interested/affected international parties
Results
The centenary festival achieved acclaim from a diverse
group of South African as well as international
attendees. Utilising social media and strategic online
presence activities, we managed to create far-reaching
publicity in support of various traditional media
campaigns leading up to the event. The festival also
provided a successful platform for the launch of Ideas
100.
