We take great pride in being the major sponsor of our local Music Festival. The motto of Kiwanis International is “serving the children of the world.” We are very pleased to showcase the musical abilities of the talented young people of Prince Albert and area. During the Festival, you have the opportunity to listen to music and song that are the products of many hours of instruction and practice. The participants are to be commended for sharing their musical accomplishments with us. P The Festival is truly a community event. Although the focus is on the students, one has to acknowledge those who make this event possible: the parents who encourage their children to become involved in the art of music, the dedication of the music teachers and instructors, and the volunteers who annually organize this event. I invite you to enjoy the Festival. George Yando President Prince Albert Kiwanis Club 3 f o o r February to May - 48 District Festivals June 3 to 5 - Provincial Finals (Saskatoon) August 11 to 13 FCM Nationals (Edmonton, AB) P Introducing the New look for Prince Albert Kiwanis Music Festival The PAKMF logo design was created by Jina Bae, a grade eleven student attending St Mary High School. She is involved in the music program in various ways, including St Mary Jazz Band and glee club, as well as the Annual Northwest Region Cadet Honour Band. Jina has been playing the clarinet for 6 years and continues to show her passion for music through the Saskatchewan Music Festival Association. 4 Greetings from the Saskatchewan Music Festival Association President It is my pleasure, on behalf of the Board of Directors of SMFA, to bring greetings to our District Festivals, volunteers and festival participants across the province. f o o r As a provincial association, we seek to enhance lives through an appreciation for music and speech arts. Whether you come as a performer, teacher, conductor, volunteer, audience member or as an adjudicator, we all share a love of music. We are grateful for the support of the Saskatchewan Lotteries Trust Fund for Sport, Culture and Recreation and SaskCulture Inc. Their generous financial support allows the tradition of music festivals, established in this province in 1908, to continue to flourish today. P Volunteers are the lifeblood of the Music Festival system in Saskatchewan. Without the people who give freely of their time and from their hearts, none of this would be possible. Please take a moment to show your appreciation to the members of your local festival committee, for the important work they do. May your Music Festival of 2016 be a true celebration of music and community! Nancy Toppings, President Saskatchewan Music Festival Association 5 f o o r P 6 Greetings from the Prince Albert Kiwanis Music Festival President It is with much pride and delight that I write this message as president of the Prince Albert Kiwanis Music Festival Association. This is the 68th Music Festival to be held in Prince Albert and will encompass many disciplines commencing in February and concluding in late March. f o o r The Prince Albert Kiwanis Music Festival affords valuable experience, providing life-long memories and scholarship opportunities to all its participants. It is the dedicated commitment of the many volunteers that make this festival possible. The countless hours of hard work from the co-ordinator, discipline and scholarship chairs, the treasurer, secretaries and the Prince Albert Kiwanis Club are all an integral part of the process. Their contribution ensures that we are able to bring the festival experience to the youth of Prince Albert and continue to make it the success that it is. P This festival is further made possible through the contributions from our scholarship sponsors, patrons and advertisers. The many venues that are used during the festival: Messiah Lutheran Church, Calvary United Church, Sacred Heart Cathedral and Rivier Academy, also need to be acknowledged. Thank you to all our contributors, your continued support is truly appreciated. To all the students participating in the music festival this year Congratulations! Taking part in the music festival can feel daunting as you have to perform in front of a large audience and are being judged by an adjudicator. It takes a lot of strength to face this challenge and it is a great personal achievement. Good Luck in your endeavours and best wishes for your continued success. I hope that you enjoy this experience and perform to the best of your ability as you make us proud. Looking forward to an exciting month of music ahead! It is exact, specific; and it demands exact acoustics. A conductor's full score is a chart, a graph which indicates frequencies, intensities, volume changes, melody and harmony all at once and with the most exact control of time. Music is a foreign language. Most of the terms are in Italian, German or French; and the notation is certainly not English but a highly developed kind of shorthand that uses symbols to represent ideas. The semantics of music is the most complete and universal language. f o o r Music is mathematical. It is rhythmically based on the subdivisions of time into fractions which must be done instantaneously, not worked out on paper. Music is history. Music usually reflects the environment and times of its creation, often even the country and/or racial feeling. Music is physical education. It requires fantastic coordination of fingers, hands, arms, lips, cheek and facial muscles, in addition to extraordinary control of diaphragmatic, back, stomach, and chest muscles, which respond instantly to the sound the ear hears and the mind interprets. P Music is all these things, but most of all, music is art. It allows a human being to take all of these dry, technically boring (but difficult) techniques and use them to create emotion. That is one thing science cannot duplicate; humanism, feeling, emotion, call it what you will. That is why we teach music. Not because we expect our students to major in music Not because we expect them to play or sing all their life Not so they can relax Not so they can have fun. But - So they will be human So they will recognize beauty So they will be sensitive So they will be closer to an infinite beyond this world So they will have something to cling to So they will have more love, more compassion, more gentleness, more good - - in short, more life. Of what value will it be to make a prosperous living unless you know how to live? That is why we teach music. This was brought to an abrupt halt by World War II. When an invitation came to join a war agency in an undefined capacity she stated that quite frankly, she really did not know what help that she, as a musician, could be in such an organization. The director, who knew her background said: “then let me tell you what you would bring to this or any other business organization.” f o o r First As a musician, you have a highly developed memory, and a memory for details. Second You are fully adjusted to working in a room by yourself for long periods with complete concentration. P Third You have learned how to analyze and to work out in detail, problems connected with a piece of work. Fourth Your mental and muscular coordination of eye, ear, mouth, hands and feet can be surpassed by few. Fifth You have learned how to organize your time to meet deadlines. These are all qualities so valuable that when adapted to any worthwhile purpose, put you years ahead of the average academic graduate. This, in reality, is what you are giving your child when you give music training in addition to awakening him to the soul satisfying beauty therein.
