SPRING PRESCRIBED
BURNING PLANNED
GMUG BIOLOGIST RECEIVES
NATIONAL AWARD
The Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National
Forests are gearing up for spring prescribed burns. A total of
eight areas are planned to burn. Most of the burns will occur in
early April and continue into June, depending upon weather
and appropriate ground and vegetation conditions.
Significant planning for these burns has occurred and
one of the most important considerations is for safety of the
firefighters and the public. Fire managers have developed
detailed prescribed fire plans that dictate conditions, staffing
and safety requirements. These plans also provide for obtaining
smoke permits from the State. Most of the burns are designed
to reduce vegetation build-up/fuels, improve wildlife habitat
and to improve rangelands. The burns will be ignited only if
conditions are conducive to a safe, effective burn and within
appropriate smoke dispersal parameters.
The following prescribed burns are planned:
Gunnison National Forest:
West Elk Burn: Located about 14 miles west of Gunnison
and 5 miles north of Blue Mesa Reservoir. Six hundred acres
will be burned.
Myers Burn: Lies about 30 miles south of Gunnison in
the Cochetopa Park area. About 300 acres are planned to be
burned.
Los Pinos Burn: Located 35 miles south of Gunnison,
also in the Cochetopa Park area. Approximately 1000 acres are
planned to be burned.
Grand Mesa and Uncompahgre National Forests:
Nick Mountain Burn: This is part of a continuing effort
to manage vegetation and improve habitat in the area. Located
about 30 miles east of Grand Junction and 4 miles southeast of
Molina, 720 acres are planned for burning this spring.
Indian Creek Burn: This also is a continuation of previous prescribed burning activity. About 172 acres remain to be
treated within the final burn unit. The area is located about 12
miles southeast of Gateway and 39 miles southwest of Grand
Junction.
Glencoe Pine Burn: Located on the 25 Mesa Road,
approximately 13 miles northeast of Nucla. This project is
designed to under-burn (remain on the ground and reduce vegetation) in ponderosa pine to improve stand resiliency and
improve productivity.
Western Implementation Unit #5 Burn: Located about 7
miles southeast of Norwood, near the Goodenough Road. This
project will burn 1,122 acres that was mechanically treated two
years ago.
Little Monitor Burn: Consists of approximately 75 acres
of mechanically treated pinyon/juniper and oak brush vegetation, and 675 acres of ponderosa pine understory. The burn
area is located about 20 miles southwest of Delta, along 25
Mesa Road and about 20 miles southwest of Delta.
For information on prescribed burns, wildfires and fire
restrictions on National Forest System lands and other areas,
call the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National
Forests Fire Information line at 970.874.6602, visit the GMUG
Forest website (www.fs.usda.gov/gmug), Twitter https://twitter.com/GMUG_NF (#GMUGNF).
Cutis Keetch, zone wildlife biologist for the Norwood
and Ouray Ranger Districts received the 2014 Mule Deer
Foundation/Forest Conservation Award. The award was
presented to him at the Mule Deer Foundation Annual
Convention in Salt Lake City.
Keetch received the award based on the ground
breaking work completed to implement the first-ever
Stewardship Agreement with the Mule Deer Foundation in
the Rocky Mountain Region of the Forest Service.
The agreement calls for initially treating 150 acres of
wildlife habitat and also includes up to 800 acres of timber
marked and prepared for treatment in a forest restoration
and resiliency project. Additional treatments will be added
to the agreement as funding is acquired toward increasing
the beneficial work.
The stewardship agreement is another tool that can
be utilized to improve/ restore habitat on Forest System
Lands with partners. This allows more habitat improvement
work to occur and provides for partnership involvement.
The Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison
National Forests are proud of the distinguished work being
accomplished toward enhancing wildlife habitat, improved
forest health and making forests more resilient. Keetch
looks forward to continuing to build the partnership
between the Forest Service and organizations like the Mule
Deer Foundation to treat important habitat areas on the
Forest.

GUNNISON NORDIC WRAP-UP
Wow! What a season Gunnison Nordic shared with
skiers this year. Despite relatively low snow levels our track
was accessible and fun from November until the first week of
March. We were happy to be able to groom from November
23rd, 2014 to our last set corduroy on March 4, 2015.
The Kenny Mac Ski Fest on January 31 was held at
Hartman Rocks Recreation Area during a very warm storm
cycle. Nordic skiing can be challenging during extreme
warm temperatures, but we saw a record number of participants. There is something special about racing in the high
alpine desert.
Gunnison Nordic is a 100% volunteer based community organization. Supporters of Nordic skiing and of our
efforts make contributions that make our programming possible. Gunnison County skiers and visitors can enjoy our
groomed trails for free; and we always appreciate a contribution that directly funds gasoline, oil, snowmobile and
groomer parts, trail maps, signage and unlimited items similar to what a small ski area needs.
Thank you to our amazing volunteers and sponsors for
helping keep Nordic skiing in and around the City of
Gunnison. Please go to our website, gunnisonnordic.com to
view our supporters and sponsors and tell them “thank you”
for supporting the life time sport of Nordic skiing.
Please look for our announcements in the fall for our
season kickoff towards the end of October.
Happy spring and more sunny days ahead from the
Gunnison Nordic Board – Mike Cole, Jim Dirksen, Sandy
Dobert, Joellen and Mark Fonken, Don Graham, Carol
Greenlee and Layne Nelson.

NOTICE OF GUNNISON COUNTY, BLM AND USFS ROAD CLOSURES
Gunnison County, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the United States Forest Service (USFS) have
temporarily closed a number of roads to all motor vehicles to protect Gunnison Sage-grouse during their mating
season and to prevent road damage during wet spring conditions. These roads were closed March 15 and will
reopen on May 15, 2015. The U.S. Forest Service Closures extend through June 15 to protect nesting Gunnison
Sage-grouse.
The cooperation of the public is required to successfully implement these road closures. The closures will aid in the
preservation of the Gunnison Sage-grouse and may assist in reducing impacts on residents and visitors of
Gunnison County from the Federal listing of the grouse under provisions of the Endangered Species Act.
Copies of the closure list and maps are available at Gunnison County Public Works, 195 Basin Park Drive; Gunnison
County Community Development Department, 221 N. Wisconsin; Colorado Parks and Wildlife office, 300 W. New
York; Bureau of Land Management office, 210 West Spencer, Unit A, and the U.S. Forest Service office, 216 N.
Colorado, Gunnison, Colorado.
These closures apply to all motor vehicles. Do not park at the closures in a manner that blocks access through the
closure gates. All non-motorized trail users are also requested to use Gunnison Basin roads/trails only after 9 a.m.
during this period to help reduce disturbance to Sage-grouse.
For additional information call Gunnison County Public Works at 641-0044; the Gunnison County Wildlife
Conservation Coordinator at 641-7604; BLM at 642-4940; or the U.S. Forest Service at 641-0471.

Telluride Theatre’s Jukebox Burlesque Friday, April 3, 9:00
p.m. $20
Sexy, funny, daring and delightfully scandalous, the
Telluride Theatre’s House of Shimmy Shake is back, bringing
its sell-out Burlesque to Crested Butte. “Jukebox Burlesque” is
their newest show featuring traditional Burlesque that spans
the musical eras of the strip-tease realm. With a full lap full of
surprises, including boylesque, it’s a pastie- party … and you're
invited! It was the Victorian Burlesque of London from the
1830’s to the 1890’s that inspired the famed American
Burlesque. Dripping with music, ribald comedy sketches, and
an ever-growing showing of skin, early 20th century vaudeville
circuits of Burlesque were soon established creating a debut
venue for actresses such as Fanny Brice and Mae West. The
Prohibition Era marked the snuffing of the uninhibited atmosphere. Today’s Neo-Burlesque kicked off in New York and Los
Angeles with a cult following in the 1990’s, full of nostalgia for
the historic spectacle, focusing on the self-expression of the
performer and the art of the tease. Come and let the women of
Telluride Burlesque seduce you!
