Cottonwood Project and Closure
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Central Federal Lands
Highway Division (CFLHD), in cooperation with Gunnison County, U.S.
Forest Service (USFS), and Gunnison National Forest, is proposing
improvements to Cottonwood Pass Road, also designated as County Road 209
and Colorado Forest Highway 59. The project area extends from Taylor River
Road (CR 742) to the summit of Cottonwood Pass for a length of 13.5 miles in
Gunnison County, Colorado.
The purpose of the project is to provide a safe and sustainable roadway that
will improve access to the highly visited area of the Gunnison National Forest
and reduce maintenance costs. The project will reconstruct the existing gravel
road to a paved surface. In addition, the project will provide for consistent
lane widths, shoulders, clear zones, and improve horizontal alignment and
roadside drainage.
Construction of the new road is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2017.
The project includes considerable earthwork, grading, and paving and will
require large construction equipment and hauling vehicles. The short
construction season at high elevation will require fast paced work during the
summer which is also the high visitor use period. The narrow existing widths
and need for large construction equipment would present significant
challenges in coordinating the work while allowing for safe public travel
within the work zone.
During the construction seasons in 2017 and 2018 the following measures will
be in place:
1. Cottonwood Pass will be completely closed to all public traffic, 24 hours a
day, on the Gunnison County side from the top of the pass to Taylor River
Road (CR 742).
2. The parking area at the top of the pass will be accessible from the Buena
Vista side at all times.
3. During winter months defined from Thanksgiving to April 1, no work will
be allowed.
4. Bicycle and pedestrian use will be prohibited as the surface will be
roughly graded and unexpected obstructions and hazards may exist.
5. Camping along Cottonwood Pass Road will be prohibited.
6. The Timberline Trail crosses Cottonwood Pass Road within the project
limits and will remain open for use. Advance warning signs and
precautionary measures will be in place to allow safe passage of
Timberline Trail users within the construction zone.
If you have any questions about this project please call the Gunnison County
Public Works Department at 970-641-0044 or email
publicworks@gunnisoncounty.org.

RETURN OF THE DEAD
HALLOWEEN OLD TIME RADIO THEATRE
Be afraid. Be very afraid. On Halloween we unleash the
monster of monsters in the Black Box Theatre. You may just
find that there’s little difference between one who attempts to
create life and the creature that results in Mary Shelly’s story
of Frankenstein’s monster, plus a giant spider the size of a
horse and even a mad scientist’s reincarnated wife! Turn Back
the Dial presents all three plays in the intensely personal
reader’s theatre style this Friday & Saturday, October 28 & 29.
Doors open at 7:00 p.m., Curtain 7:30 p.m. Wear your best
costume on Saturday night for the costume contest! You will
be afraid… Very afraid! Tickets: $15/adults, $12/kids (12-) &
snrs (60+). Get tickets by calling 970-641-4029, visit

The Gunnison Valley Wellness & Health Guide launches
online on October 27th, offering a comprehensive listing of services
to the people of the Gunnison Valley.
The online directory ( www.gvwellnessguide.org) is housed
on the Gunnison County Public Libraries’ website. Because the idea
of “health” is so broad, and so personal, the team working on the
guide realized that it needed to include multiple categories. These
include physical, mental/emotional, and spiritual well-being; basic
needs such as where to find food; exercise/recreation; education;
and companionship. “The last category was especially challenging,”
said Maryo Gard Ewell, project coordinator. Ewell is director of
programs at the Community Foundation of the Gunnison Valley
(CFGV). “We knew that an important predictor of health is whether
people feel they belong in a place.” As a result, the “Get Connected”
category identifies support groups and clubs, as well as suggestions
on how to locate other places to connect that might not be listed.
The team also recognized the diversity of approaches within
each category. There are almost 600 listings in the Guide, the result
of months of research and verification. The Guide had its roots in
two initially unrelated projects. The first was the “Health Equity”
committee of CFGV in which a group of volunteers studied ways in
which equitable access to health care could be achieved. The
second was the One Valley Prosperity Project (OVPP), where
people identified “Community Health & Equity” as an action area with a resource guide as an objective. The two committees merged,
and the Guide is the result.
Pam Montgomery, Executive Director of CFGV, noted that
some volunteers, like Emergency Medical Technician Arden
Anderson, contributed as many as 200 hours gathering, validating
and organizing information. “It was a total team effort,” she said.
“Healthcare providers, Western students, representatives of the
League of Women Voters, nonprofits, government representatives,
ministers, County Public Health staff, and so many more helped. It
will be updated quarterly.”
Cash and in-kind support for the Guide has been provided
by El Pomar, the Gunnison Country Times, the Gunnison Country
Shopper, the Gunnison Public Libraries, and The Colorado Trust.

friends move cattle all over the Gunnison country were just a
part of his life and naturally subjects for his art.

GDI (Gas Fuel injection) prevalent
in many newer vehicles and dating
back to 2008 in some models
requires service that was not as
critical on non GDI vehicles.
Carbon deposits accumulate on
the intake valves due to the fact
that the fuel is injected directly
into the combustion chamber vs.
conventional injection at the port
near the intake valve. Fuel
additives in fuels that would
normally limit the deposits are no
longer targeting the intake valve,
causing accelerated deposits. A
new product/procedure has just
recently been devised as a
solution to this issue, using a
specific formula it gradually
dissolves the deposits. Precision
Automotive has purchased this
specialty equipment and can
perform this service, saving
costly engine damage. Call
