WSCU FIELD HOUSE Sign up your team at gunnisoncounty relayforlife.org PROM IS ALMOST HERE! APRIL 18TH Q STOP TO PONDER “There’s something happening here. What it is ain’t exactly clear. I think it’s time we stop, hey, what’s that sound? Everybody, look what’s going down.”. Some lyrics from s song recently played on “local” KBUT, by Stephens Stills with Buffalo Springfield, Stop Children What’s That Sound / (For what it’s worth), recorded way back in 1966, still resonates with today’s issues. I would like to gently suggest, perhaps let’s stop, to ponder what is going on in our valley recently. • OVPP (One Valley Prosperity Project) managed by a recent transplant from Snowmass reported making 130K. Consultants, consultants (from other cities): Why? locals can’t be appreciated/questioned to make sound development plan + what about the big $$$ spent, in addition to more non local architects hired. • Additional internet advertising companies vs. CB/MT CB Chamber. • Eleven/Irwin Guides/Scarp Ridge possibly a quasi local monopoly. • Snowmobiles proposed off National Forest access up drainages. • Softball field proposed off Town Park. • Expand CB Center for the Arts. • 7 music venues in total so far, proposed in Gunnison County. • VRBO (Vacation Rentals By Owners) proposed restrictions & conflicts between homeowners trying to salvage foreclosure vs. newbie’s rentals for profit. • Lots for sale; some allowed to buy up 2 to 4 making their own compound. • Redbox at Clark’s vs. local Flying Petito Video store. • CB Mountain Earth & Gunnison Vitamin organics vs. Simple Truth (AKA Kroger’s). • “THNK LOCL” think local slogan; remember that? • Poop & Dogs running at large, law not obeyed. • Limited housing, parking, hotels, ski gear rentals, and restaurants. • Bridges, round-a-bouts, parking garages, parking meters & traffic lights proposals. Ponder, is our “Mountain” town disappearing and becoming an amusement park? Does it compel us to wonder why we live here; for the true mountain experience or to change it to fit into another life style? Are we glad we got voted #1 in a ski magazine; advertising how stellar our schools are, a national commercial exposure for blue Bud Light Whatever USA, and numerous other advertisements? Sure it’s good to make money, but at what cost? As another slogan says, “Last Great Colorado Ski Town” is Crested Butte. Is that at risk of being extinct? Others have written, (surmising) it cannot continue to be go, go & grow, grow. But ponder if it does? Why do you live here? If you agree with these concerns, please show your support with addition opinions with other LTE, attend meetings & email requests, and speak-up. It’s ok to say & wear it on your sleeve (or spandex), the word “stop”. Perhaps another slogan to ponder about. FROM THE GUNNISON VALLEY MARBLES CLUB: A great big thank you to everyone who helped the Gunnison Valley Marbles Club by purchasing bingo tickets, selling tickets, making donations, and supporting our fund raising bingo in other ways. Our event at the Gunnison Elks Lodge # 1623 on Friday evening, March 27th, was very successful. All together with the bingo, bake sale, silent auction, and donations we made $1,378.00. Thanks to the local media for publicity, to City Market for allowing us to sell tickets in the lobby, to the Gunnison Bank & Trust Company for advertising on the bank marquee, and to the Elks Lodge for sponsoring the event and for their $100.00 donation. A special thank you to Kathy Ashwood for doing all the paperwork, arranging the publicity, and pulling the whole thing together. The young marbles players in the valley appreciate all of you. (4/1).
