Established toothing in a new outfit.............................20
Permanently soft materials are ideally suited for
relieving the pressure exerted by full dentures
on the supporting areas of the mouth. These
materials are difficult to process and prone to
colonization by micro-organisms. This can be
prevented by smooth, homogenous surfaces,
but the creation of sufficiently smooth surfaces
requires very special tools.

President’s message
Next steps
S
ummer activities in Ontario have
been moving at a feverish pace, as
record temperatures and a delightful
amount of sunshine have been present
for all to enjoy. I hope all of you have had
an opportunity to enjoy these summer
months with both family and friends.
We are very pleased with the continued
actions at the College of Denturists of
Ontario (CDO) under the guidance of
Ms. Deanna Williams, who has been
appointed as supervisor by the Minister
of Health. As I titled the spring message,
“Springtime: a new leaf,” we can see
by what is transpiring at the CDO in
relation to the status of structure, bylaws
and governance, the re-incarnation is
beginning.
DAC would like to congratulate and
welcome the new members of electoral
districts who were recently elected
by fellow Denturists in their regions to
represent the public’s interest on the
CDO. Mr. Keith Collins, DD, from Timmins
(District 8), brings a wealth of knowledge
as a past member and a past president
of the CDO; Mr. Michael Vout Jr., DD,
from Belleville (District 7), brings a fresh
perspective of younger members to
allow the college to move forward by
providing youthful energy and ideas; and
Mr. Luc Tran, DD, from Toronto (District
6) has been acclaimed as the district
representative, and brings experience
of the various committees and inner
workings of the CDO, where history
and knowledge are invaluable. These
members have embraced a great number
of responsibilities and commitment to the
profession, which is appreciated by all
members.
We encourage other DAO members
to consider the opportunity to serve the
profession when other electoral districts
become available. We must continue this
“new leaf” opportunity to help our college
to be transparent, non-judgmental, open
to new ideas, and willing to change for
both the benefit of the public and the
Denturist profession.
In Canada, through DAC and its
Curriculum Advisory Committee, we
have established a national accreditation
process that continues to unite the
profession, educational institutions, and
the regulatory bodies. Our accreditation
process will, this year and next, be
completing site visits to a number of the
denturist education institutions in Canada.
At our upcoming AGM in Toronto, we
will be reviewing and discussing the
possibility of endorsing the integration of
a modular denturist exam on a national
level. The continuation and expansion
of the accreditation process leads itself
to the standardization of both education
and examination. This exam initiative was
developed by Mr. Michael Vakalis DD;
Mr. Carlo Zanon, DD; and Mr. Joe Della
Marina, DD and we applaud their initiative
in bringing this forward.
Our AGM is graciously being hosted by
the Denturist Association of Ontario, with
a great new venue at the DoubleTree By
Hilton in Toronto, Ontario.
This August, Glenda and I, with the
Starkey Hearing Foundation, will be
delivering the gift of hearing to the children
of China. Our Canadian team will provide
the gift of hearing to 6,000 children in
need. We will be received by the Chinese
government in Beijing, then start fitting
children with hearing aids in the cities
of Xi’an and Chengdu. As members of
the Starkey Hearing Foundation, we are
able to bring understanding of speech
and sounds to the children and adults of
the world by providing them with hearing
healthcare. This mission to China will
be the ninth mission that Glenda and I
have participated in. Our Canadian team
has supplied much-needed hearing aids
to over 24,800 children and adults in
El Salvador (two missions), Jamaica,
Panama, Turkey, Egypt, Mexico and
Kenya. I hope for the winter issue to

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
provide you with a follow-up on our China
mission, So The World May Hear.
The DAC AGM meetings will
commence on Monday, September 17,
2012 and will adjourn on Wednesday,
September 19 in the afternoon, at which
time the DAO will hold its kick-off to
Perfecting Your Practice (PYP) with a
golf tournament at the prestigious Royal
Woodbine Golf Club, which is only five
minutes from the DoubleTree Hotel.
PYP is an outstanding professional
development experience for Denturists,
their staff, and students. This conference
allows for the ultimate in education,
networking and trade show events that
are invaluable for all practitioners.
This program, that DAO sponsors
each year, was developed with you, the
practitioner, in mind. These sessions are
focused on expanding the ability to be
all that you can be within your practice.
As you attend the event, you have the
opportunity to be connected to others, to
reach out, get answers, ask questions,
and surround yourself with people who are
committed to the profession of Denturism.
As you build your network, enhance
your skills, you will take what you do
to the next level – begin by taking the
Perfecting Your Practice step.
See you there!
Yours in Denturism,

LE MOT du président
Étapes à venir
E
of Denturists of Ontario (CDO) sous la
d’ex-membre et ex-président du CDO;
membres.
endroit, soit le DoubleTree By Hilton, à
Toronto, en Ontario.
En août, mon épouse, Glenda, et
moi-même participerons avec la Starkey
Hearing Foundation à une mission
destinée à redonner l’ouïe à des enfants

LE MOT du président
chinois.
d’entendre. Cette mission en Chine sera
la neuvième à laquelle Glenda et moi
prenons part. Notre équipe canadienne a
fourni des appareils auditifs d’une utilité
inestimable à plus de 24 800 enfants et
adultes au Salvador (deux missions), en
Jamaïque, au Panama, en Turquie, en
Égypte, au Mexique et au Kenya. Dans le
numéro d’hiver de notre revue, j’espère
vous donner un compte rendu de notre
mission en Chine sous le thème So The
World May Hear.
Les réunions et l’AGA de l’ADC
commenceront le lundi 17 septembre
2012 et se termineront le mercredi
19 septembre dans l’après-midi. Par la
suite, ce sera le lancement de Perfecting
Your Practice (PYP), activité de formation
de la DAO, à l’occasion d’un tournoi de
golf au prestigieux club de golf Royal
Woodbine, situé à seulement cinq minutes
de l’hôtel DoubleTree.
PYP, c’est une riche expérience de
perfectionnement professionnel ouverte
aux denturologistes, à leur personnel ainsi
qu’aux étudiants. Ce rendez-vous permet
de combiner formation, réseautage
et salon d’exposants – une occasion
inestimable pour les praticiens.

Time
M
anaging our time is probably one of
the most effective tools to increasing
our productivity both at work and in our
personal lives. We all have to-do lists that
we would like to accomplish during the
day, week, or month, but realistically, how
many of us are actually batting 500?
The most effective way to accomplish
our tasks is to start with a realistic list
breaking it into day, week, month and
even year as priorities. If a daily task is
already taking up a lot of your time and
suddenly another urgent task arises during
the day, how will you manage? Begin with
balancing your daily effort to allow for other
emergencies. By focusing on the task at
hand to completion, you will then be able
to allow yourself the ability to move on to
the next. If it happens to be a larger task,
break it down into smaller segments as this
applies aptly for the weekly, monthly and
yearly tasks. This process actually affords
you to complete segments ahead of time.
The next most important factor is to
consider when you are most productive.
Some people don’t get started their day
till noon, whereas others get the majority
of their work done before noon and have
the rest of the day for leisure. Managing
your time in increments or intervals is
another way to measure your productivity
and accountability. If you happen to be
ahead of schedule, take a break, if behind
schedule take a shorter break and get
back to it.
Always schedule your appointments
accordingly to allow yourself enough time
to complete the procedure. If you take
a break after that task or appointment is
completed, use the time to reassess and
develop new perspective on what you
could have done more effectively or how
you might engage in the next. These small
breaks provide incentives to completion of
the next appointment or task.
The next helpful tool to achieving a
higher rate of time management success
is to track your progress as you complete
your items. The simple exercise of crossing
things off your list is relaxing and relieving,
but it will also provide you with a sense of
accomplishment no matter how small. This
process also serves as a further motivator
for the next day. Reassess your list from
time to time by rewriting or prioritizing as
you deem necessary. You may have to
edit, omit, or add tasks.
Another key differentiator to
effective time management
is to sometimes delegate
tasks to others.
Delegating but also
following up is part
of accountability,
so don’t take it
for granted that
this item is off
your desk lightly.
As mentioned
earlier, focusing
on a task to
completion is
important but
most people
today have
extremely busy
lives and along
with that comes a
lack of sleep. Being
overtired makes
concentrating very
difficult and thereby not
allowing you to function
at your best. Try and get a
minimum of six hours of sleep and
eight if you can.
Click here to return to the Table of Contents
Technology is also a great game
equalizer as most often it can expedite and
make task completion more efficient and
more accurate – in most cases! Nowadays,
we are ever more dependent upon
technology and sometimes if our computer
crashes we are helpless. The idea is to use
technology to help you but not as a crutch.
Lastly, set aside time for pure fun and
relaxation.

The Only Non Water-Soluble Denture Adhesive
Many patients often experience retention and stability issues with their lower dentures due to narrow/flat lower ridge, bone-loss, intensive
flow of saliva, or an active tongue dislodging the lower dentures. Secure® is a patented non-water soluble denture adhesive, that prevents
adhesive from dissolving while eating or drinking for up to 12 hours. Conventional denture adhesives are water soluble and work by
thickening saliva to improve suction between the denture and gum. However the adhesive can wash away while they are eating and
drinking resulting in reapplication. Try Secure® Denture Adhesive and give your patients a confident and care-free day.
Long lasting bond holds for up to 12 hours

INSURANCE
Life insurance can
ensure estate-planning tactics
P
rominent in the ’90s, the term “estate
bond” is an old concept of the life
insurance industry that mathematically
proves how life insurance can protect and
transfer certain assets that may otherwise
be left vulnerable to market-related erosion
or taxation.
Although investment assets and life
insurance are indeed different parts of your
financial plan, they can work in unison to
create wealth. How they work together
goes far beyond the adage “buy term and
invest the difference,” which simply uses
term insurance at the level of basic financial
planning, unlike the alternative, advanced
features of the estate bond, built right into
a tax-planning manoeuvre.
How does an estate
bond help to defer taxes?
This concept is an estate-encompassing
idea because it is designed to work upon
the death of the insured. Although an
estate bond is not an investment designed
for short-term financial planning, it can
increase the tax-free wealth that you pass
on to heirs.
The estate bond is ideal for the investor
who has already maximized his or her tax
benefits using an RRSP or has significant
investments in vehicles to defer capital
gains tax. This investor may enjoy a thriving
business enterprise, hold a large fund
or stock portfolio, and want to maximize
some of the capital that will be left to heirs.
Consider a situation in which a couple
of age 65 would like to leave funds to
their grandchildren to help them purchase
their first homes as well as enhance their
future. How does it work? With an initial
investment of $150,000, you can acquire
a joint last-to-die life annuity. This life
annuity will pay $7,000 per year after tax
(after the marginal tax rate is paid). This
$7,000 payment is then used to purchase
a permanent joint last-to-die life insurance
contract – on either one spouse’s life or
both spouses’ lives – with a face value of
$350,000.
At this stage of the financial planning,
the $150,000 of estate value grows to
$350,000 which will one day pass to the
estate tax free!
Note: Joint last-to-die Life Annuity
based on: male, age 65; female, age 65,
single premium non-registered deposit
of $150,000, joint survivor annuity. Life
insurance is based on: male age 65;
non-smoker, female 65, non-smoker, joint
last-to-die for $350,000 death benefit (with
a level cost of insurance, and increasing
death benefit).
Ask your financial advisor to compare
the projected growth of permanent life
insurance (some use tax-sheltered GICs
and tax-advantaged segregated funds to
enhance the face-value growth) versus
taxable investments (such as equity
investment funds and/or GICs). In most
cases, the estate bond, along with certain
benefit guarantees, will far outperform the
initial capital invested with respect to the
after-tax value passed on to the estate.
The estate bond is definitely an estateplanning tool to maximize wealth payable
to heirs after death. It is true that there is far
less liquidity in the life insurance contract.
Therefore, consider this advanced planning
concept if you have already amassed
enough money to guarantee a good
retirement lifestyle. Because life insurance
proceeds are paid to your beneficiaries
tax-free, you can be assured that the
government can’t take any tax bite out
of this wealth bequeathed to your loved
ones.

practice management
Janice Wheeler, President, The Art of Management Inc.
Charisma and success
W
hether you own the practice or are
one of the essential players in the
practice, top-notch people skills make
a HUGE difference in the success of the
business.
Charisma?
This word implies the ability to make others
feel important and special. People who
have it are flocked to. Leaders who have it
are followed willingly.
You probably have met a few people
in your life (or maybe you are one of them)
who instantly make others feel important
and special. In fact, I have met a few who
impact a whole room of people the instant
they walk into it. And their business seems
to just effortlessly reach the top and their
lives are successful.
And for the rest of us?
For the rest of us who seemingly are born
without this natural talent or ability, how
can we create it?
Here are some aspects of charisma that
you might try to emulate and master:
1. Listen to people more and talk less.
That doesn’t mean don’t talk at all. It is
important to listen well what people are
saying and to ask questions and show
interest. Don’t give advice unless asked.
Don’t one-up them with a similar story.
Appreciate what they are saying and
let the person enjoy the limelight. Show
them that they are worth listening to.
2. Give the other person
your undivided attention.
Make sure you don’t let your mobile
phone or texting pull your attention
away from the person you are talking
to. There is little that can make the

other person feel unimportant than
taking calls or reading a text in the
middle of your conversation with
them. Instead, focus entirely on the
other people and let the call or texting
go unnoticed and that will convince
the other person that they really ARE
important to you.
doesn’t mean always letting others know
that you know more, even if you do.
3. Learn from other people.
By listening to others and questioning
them on subjects you are not an expert
on, their ideas and opinions could even
change YOUR life in positive ways, too.
You will probably agree that you don’t
know everything in the world or even
about the other person you are talking
to. So be INTERESTED in other people
and share their thoughts. Grow.
4. Don’t ACT important.
No one gets less respect than someone
who always thinks they are better than
everyone else. Being a good leader
5. Give praise whenever possible.
Your ability to observe when people do
things well, and your thoughtfulness in
commenting on it, especially in front of
others, make the people around you
feel special. “Wow! That was fantastic
how you handled that patient to keep
their appointment.” “Well done on
completing that task so fast.” Respect
is earned and this is how you get it.
6. Pass on positives
and pass over gossip.
Passing on good news or making
positive comments about others shows
that you really care that people do well.
Passing on the latest gossip, while
it may seem very newsworthy and
interesting, is a no-no. People do not
respect gossipers, so refrain from falling
into that ditch.
7. Be genuine.
Being yourself and not acting like a
snob, or a know-it-all, or any other
unpopular character trait will attract
more people and attention and turn
off fewer people. If you have made
a mistake, admit it. Be humble and
truthful. Set a good example of being
honest and real.
Try these out and practice
If you acquire the above skills and practice
them daily, your chances of success in life
will increase tremendously, and people will
want to be around you a lot more. Best of
all, you will enjoy your own life more too!

Komet’s GSQ cutters are now
available with a working part
made of special ceramic material
Permanently soft materials are ideally
suited for relieving the pressure exerted by
full dentures on the supporting areas of the
mouth, i.e., the oral mucosa and the jawbone.
These materials are, however, difficult to
process and prone to colonization by microorganisms. The settling of undesirable microorganisms can be prevented by smooth,
homogenous surfaces, however, the creation
of sufficiently smooth surfaces requires very
special tools. A lot of dental technicians
use Komet’s GSQ cutters for this job. The
established toothing specially designed to
this end is now also available with a ceramic
working part. Sven Tietge (master dental
technician) has tested the new ceramic
toothing. Please find below a summary of his
findings.
When it comes to soft relining material for
denture bases, the professional opinion of
dental technicians varies enormously. While
some view it as an ideal aid to give extra
support to poorly fitting dentures, others
consider it a last resort to make up for sloppy,
inaccurate impressions. Whatever your
personal view on these soft materials might
be, one thing is for sure: If the dentist asks for
soft relining material, the laboratory should not
only oblige, but also be able to process these
flexible materials with the utmost efficiency.
Dental relinings –
a daily occurrence

conditions in the patient’s mouth, i.e., an
atrophy of the alveolar ridge, both partial and

full dentures have to be relined. Like many
other dental technicians, Sven Tietge (master
dental technician) is required to adapt acrylic
dentures on an almost daily basis. Dental
relinings – including soft ones – are a major
part of his daily business. Patients frequently
complain about pressure sores caused
by unfavorable anatomic conditions, even
in cases where the dentist has taken the
impression carefully and accurately. Pressure
sores occur most frequently in patients with
an edentulous lower jaw, in which case
Sven Tietge and his colleagues provide
the hard acrylic base of the denture with a
permanently soft silicone relining. This has
become the standard procedure for difficult
cases in Sven Tietge’s laboratory.
GSQ cutters in
a surprising new outfit
The decision in favor of silicone as a
permanently soft relining material is due to
its composition which compares favorably
to that of other soft relining materials.
Permanently soft materials based on MMA
or PMMA are mainly suitable for short-term
use. Sven Tietge has experienced problems
with these materials when they were used
for permanent restorations. The reason
for this is that they contain phthalates to
improve their flexibility and elasticity. It is
suspected that these plasticizers negatively
affect the body’s hormonal balance.
Flexible silicones cannot be processed
with conventional instruments. The cutting

performance of burs with staggered
toothing, for example, is unacceptable on
permanently soft materials. This is why in
the past, Sven Tietge has used GSQ cutters
made by Komet for work on these materials
(fig. 1). Provided with a pronounced crosscut, the blades of these instruments permit
efficient cutting of all types of permanently
soft materials and acrylics.
Although the large, ball-shaped GSQ
cutters are particularly effective for this job,
Sven Tietge – a great fan of zirconium oxide
– has recently started using Komet’s new
CeraLine cutters for work on the transitions
between soft and hard material. The
toothing of the CeraLine cutter is identical to
that of the GSQ instrument, but the working
part of the new cutter is made of special
ceramic material (fig. 2). With this instrument,
Komet offers an alternative to traditional
tungsten carbide cutters.

ceramic burs.
Advantage of these include:
-special toothing that is ideal
for working on soft material
(reline and acrylic), creating a
smoother surface
-produces less heat transfer to
working surface which mean less
chance of possible staining of acrylics
-retains sharpness longer than
traditional carbide burs

Fig. 3 and 4: The GSQ toothing of the CeraLine cutter is provided with a pronounced cross-cut to prevent clogging. The ceramic working part
retains its sharpness over a long period of time, provided that it is used correctly, which makes it ideal for work on permanently soft materials.
Komet developed these new cutters
because ceramic blades retain their
sharpness over a long period of time,
provided that they are handled correctly.
What’s more, ceramic conducts heat less
efficiently than metal, which means that
the working part does not heat up quite as
quickly during smaller corrections. This is
confirmed by Sven Tietge’s own experience
with these cutters.
Established toothing,
improved material
The special qualities of ceramic blades
constitute a great advantage when cutting
sensitive, soft materials. They facilitate the
creation of perfectly smooth surfaces without
clogging up, thus doing away with constantly
having to clean the blades (figs. 3 and 4).
The substance removal achieved by these
ceramic cutters is consistently high, even
when working on permanently soft materials
for denture bases. The new CeraLine
instrument with the tried and tested GSQ
toothing is a real alternative to traditional
tungsten carbide cutters. Sven Tietge is
hoping that Komet will launch many more
GSQ cutters with ceramic working parts in
the future.

The Future of Removable Prosthetics
Craig Nelson AAS CDT
SponSored by Heraeus
overview: In this exciting lecture, we will look at the materials we use,
how they came about and what the future holds. We’ll evaluate some
techniques to place teeth in their original status without using expensive articulators or equipment. We will look at new exciting materials,
methods of processing and techniques. There are implant retained
and supported dentures that will be fabricated well into the future, but
what about the patient that isn’t able to step up with such a big invest-
ment? We will look at a solution for the denture with minimal retention
without implants.

Retirement
Michael Mason’s retirement
I
n 1945 in Budapest,
Hungary, Michael
Mason was attending
dental school,
planning to become a
dentist. He was also
working part-time
as an apprentice in
a dental laboratory. In 1948 he became
the president of the Dental Technicians
Workers of Hungary. In 1949 he emigrated
to Canada and worked for several dentists
and dental laboratories. In 1954 he
passed the Registered Dental Technicians
exam and was the first non-Canadianborn person to receive his RDT licence.
He opened Mimico Dental Laboratory
on Lakeshore Blvd. West in Mimico in
December 1954. When he first started his
career, people said he wouldn’t last more
than six months. At this time, Ervin and
Frank Pollak joined his lab, and they stayed
until the lab closed in 1991. 37 years is a
38
Fall / Automne 2012
far cry from the six months predicted in
1954!
Michael was married to Ricky and had
four children: Robin, Andrew, Tov and
Roseanne. Unfortunately, Andrew died
in 1985 in Nepal while doing a clerkship
in medicine and trying to help others.
Michael’s wife Ricky died in 1986. In
1987 he remarried Doreen and gained
two more children, Cheryl and Joel Ray.
Between them, Michael and Doreen now
have 13 grandchildren, ranging in age
from 31 years down to six months, and
all living in Toronto.
In June 1995, Robert Chodowiec
joined Michael at the clinic and they
worked together for the past 17 years. In
February 2010, they moved the clinic to
the present location at 2892 Lakeshore
Blvd. West. Michael passed the clinic
over to Robert but continued to work
until April 2012 when he retired after
working 57 years on Lakeshore Blvd.
Michael has worked long and hard
over the years, and his patients are
always asking about him. He also
trained many technicians who later
became successful denturists, dental lab
technicians, and dentists. He was one
of the handful of dental technicians who
fought for the creation of and promoted
a new professional classification called
denture therapist, which was later
renamed denturist.
Michael, who also sculpts and crafts
jewellery during his spare time, says that
denturism is a very precise profession:
denturists need artistic skill and manual
dexterity to succeed.
Michael Mason has helped establish
the denturist profession and given it
the honesty, respect, and dignity it
deserves. We give thanks to him for
all his efforts. Finally, we wish Michael
Mason happiness and good health in his
retirement.

Part I course in Canada
S
wiss Denture Concept is the
continuing education program
specially designed for denturists offered
by Candulor. It is a two-part, modular
continuing education system in the form
of hands-on courses. The three-day
courses start with the technical component
followed by a clinical component, which is
conducted with a patient.
Students are introduced to the
philosophy of Prof. Dr. A. Gerber, a
lingualized occlusion concept, in the first
part of the course. One maxillary and one
mandibular full denture are set up and
manufactured in the course, each taking
individual characteristics into account.
In the subsequent clinical section the
students independently treat the patients
assigned to them as specified by Swiss
Denture Concept from the initial impression
to delivery of the final product.
At the end of the second course, every
student receives a marketing package as
support with patient consultation and for
assistance with post-delivery care.

THE UN-COMFORT ZONE
By Robert Wilson
The examined life
“Hola!”
“Hola. ¿Qué tal?”
“Bien. ¿ y tu?”
P
aul and I
were 16
years old and
had taken
high school
Spanish for
a year. We
called each
other every night
on the phone and
spoke to each
other in our new
language. More
than anything, we
wanted to test our
skill with a real Spanishspeaking person,
but we did not
know any. Then
we got the idea
to have dinner
at a Mexican
restaurant.
For two boys
who had never
dined out without
their parents, this was a
big adventure. We were so
motivated that when we made
reservations, we asked to be seated
with a waiter who could not speak
English.
What motivated us? Knowledge.
We made the same discovery that led
Sir Francis Bacon to make his famous
quote in 1597, “Knowledge is power.”
We were empowered by what we had
learned, and it gave us the confidence
to take a risk we would never have
taken before.
By the end of dinner we found out
we didn’t know nearly as much as
42
Fall / Automne 2012
“Bien.”
we thought we did, but the important
thing was that our knowledge, albeit
meager, moved us to action.
It is the same reason that we find
seminars and lectures so motivating –
because we acquire new insights in a
relatively brief period of time that we
can act on right away. If the information
is good, we can’t wait to put it to work
making our lives better and our jobs
easier.
Knowledge also motivates us
because it enables us to be more
inventive. Many new innovations are
the result of two or more existing ideas
synthesized into a new one. Creative
thinkers regularly expose themselves
to new learning experiences, and to
different viewpoints. With each new
experience, they create new synapses –
electrical connections between the nerve
cells – in their brains. This gives them
more data to draw from when they are
looking for solutions.
My son recently asked me why his
school required him to learn to play a
musical instrument. I explained to him
that it was stimulating parts of his brain
he would not have used otherwise. I told
him that even if he chose not to continue
playing the instrument as an adult, that
the knowledge he acquired today may
serve him in the future in some way that
is presently unknown to him.
Innovators are known for their ability
to think outside of the box, but more
than anything it is their broad-based
knowledge that gives them the courage
to challenge accepted beliefs. The most
successful innovators are those who
make the acquisition of knowledge part
of their lifestyle.
Greek philosopher Socrates fully
understood that learning is a lifelong
Click here to return to the Table of Contents
THE UN-COMFORT ZONE
process. When he was found guilty
of teaching his students to question
authority, he was given a choice of
punishment: death or exile. He chose
death, stating, “The unexamined life is not
worth living.”
Knowledge, however, is more than just
the accumulation of information. It has
to be used, applied, and manipulated in
some fashion. Automobile manufacturing
innovator, Henry Ford, illustrated this
point during a civil trial in which he sued
a Chicago newspaper for libel. The paper
had referred to him as an “ignorant
pacifist.” At the trial, the defendant’s
lawyer asked Ford a series of questions
designed to prove that he was indeed
ignorant. Questions such as “When
was the American Revolutionary War?”
and “How many soldiers did the British
employ?”
Eventually Ford became irritated
by the questions and remarked, “I can
summon to my aid men who can answer
any question I desire to ask concerning
the business to which I am devoting most
of my efforts. Why should I clutter up my
mind with general knowledge.”
Seek out knowledge that empowers
you, and let it give you the confidence and
courage to be more and do more.
Robert Evans Wilson, Jr. is a motivational
speaker and humorist. He works with
companies that want to be more competitive
and with people who want to think like
innovators. For more information on
