CPB’s mission, in Ms. Harrison’s words, “is to strengthen and advance public media’s service to the American people. We are a non-profit private corporation, and we serve as the steward of the taxpayer’s investment.” Early in her career, Pat was co-founder of the PR agency E. Bruce Harrison Company with her husband E. Bruce Harrison. The company became one of the top-ten owner-managed public affairs firms in the country. According to White House Archives, “she created and directed programs in the public interest… including the National Environmental Association, a partnership of labor, agriculture and industry working for better environmental solutions together.” Ms. Harrison was appointed by President George H. W. Bush to the President’s Export Council, U.S. Dept. of Commerce, where she worked to strengthen export promotion programs. In 1992, she was appointed to serve on the U.S. Trade Representative’s Service Policy Advisory Council, and in 1997, she was elected Co-Chairman of the Republican National Committee. Prior to joining CPB in 2005, Ms. Harrison served as Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs and Acting Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs. Under her leadership, Ms. Harrison has strengthened public service media through the strategic focus of CPB in these three important areas: Digital: CPB investments in innovation and technology; Dialogue: CPB investments in local community engagement, partnerships and service; and Diversity: CPB investments in and commitment to diversity of content, talent and service. To formalize this commitment, Ms. Harrison established the first Diversity and Innovation Fund for public media – radio, television, online and mobile. In 2011, Ms. Harrison created American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen, a nationwide public media initiative to help communities across the country identify and implement solutions to the high school dropout crisis. To date, more than 70 public media stations in 30 states and Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico are working with more than 800 partners to encourage students to stay on track to graduation. Ms. Harrison is also chairman of the Advisory Board of Women and Girls Lead, an innovative public media initiative designed to focus, educate and connect women, girls and their allies across the globe to address the challenges of the 21st century. In August 2012, she was included on the Forbes list of “Women Changing the World in Media” for establishing Women and Girls Lead and her continued leadership on the project. Ms. Harrison is a frequent speaker and writer on the subjects of leadership, communication strategy and constituency building. She is the recipient of many awards and honors, including the 2008 Leadership Award from the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities and the U.S. Secretary of State’s Distinguished Service Award. She also sits on the boards of the National Italian American Foundation, The American University in Rome, the Meridian International Center and IREX. March/April 2013 | 5 behind the scenes WCTE Invited to the APTS Public Media Summit in Washington Social Media Specialist Kate Spears and President & CEO Becky Magura, WCTE set up a booth at the Summit Expo highlighting some of the ways the station helps preserve and celebrate the people and culture of our region. The highlights included: I n February, WCTE was one of 15 stations across the country invited to the Association for Public Television’s Public Media Summit in Washington. The APTS Summit featured presentations and discussions of some of the most important issues facing public media today, including federal funding, new strategies for growth, business development and technological progress. Represented by Upper Cumberland Broadcast Council Chair Lillian Hartgrove, • WCTE’s free annual community event, Stations of Imagination, now in its 19th year, which offers local families and kids a day to explore the way different cultures live and learn with interactive, hands-on games, activities and entertainment. • Discover the Upper Cumberland, featuring the culture/heritage, natural beauty and special events of the Upper Cumberland and Tennessee. This WCTE production, in cooperation with funding from ARC and TECH-REDI, promotes tourism, retirement opportunities and economic development. • The preservation and promotion of regional Appalachian music and arts through live coverage of the nationally distributed show, The Smithville Fiddlers Jamboree, as well as two national series, Bluegrass Underground and Jammin’ At Hippie Jack’s. • Live Green Tennessee. Funded by the USDA and TN Dept. of Agriculture, the series promotes businesses and individuals across the state featuring green and sustainable stories from across Tennessee as a collaboration of sister PBS stations. “This was a terrific opportunity to provide a snapshot of the important role Public Broadcasting plays in our regions across the nation,” said Becky Magura. “We must never cease educating people about how much we bring to our communities. WCTE and PBS are valuable assets and worthy investments for Tennessee and for America.” WCTE Hosts PBS Deep Dive Workshop O n Thursday, January 11, PBS stations from Tennessee and Kentucky came to Cookeville for a regional PBS Workshop. The facilitators were Senior Director, Brand Strategy & Promotion Kelly Chmielewski and Brand Strategist Andrea Koslow, who came in from PBS Headquarters in Arlington, VA to share their marketing insights with participants from WTCI in Chattanooga, East Tennessee PBS in Knoxville, WLJT in Martin, KET TV in Lexington, Kentucky, and WCTE in Cookeville. 6 | WCTE Close-Up “It was an honor to host a workshop of this high caliber,” said WCTE’s Becky Magura. “It’s rare to have a regional PBS workshop held in a rural setting. They’re usually held in a metro area. We’re always excited to show off Cookeville and we had the chance when 10 people came in the night before.” A special thanks goes out to Progressive Savings Bank on Interstate Drive, and in particular Steve Rains and Lisa Fuller for the use of their excellent meeting facilities. L-R, back row, WCTE’s Kate Spears, Rick Wells, Desirée Duncan, Canaan Williams, Sonja Higgenbotham, Joyce Hunter, PBS’s Kelly Chmielewski and Andrea Koslow, WCTE’s Seth Stanger, Avery Owens and Craig Gray. Allen Branton has been lighting entertainers for over 30 years. His high profile clients include the Beach Boys, Paul McCartney, Alice Cooper, Diana Ross, Madonna, the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Paul Simon, Robin Williams, Bette Midler, George Carlin, Michael Jackson U2, and Whitney Houston, just to name a few. A couple of years ago, Allen even helped WCTE set up the lighting for Live Green Tennessee from the Putnam County Fair. The audience doesn’t give it much thought but lighting does much more than just illuminate performers. Lighting creates a mood, projects emotion and can help you enjoy a performance. For Bluegrass Underground, it both enhances the performances of the world-class talent who grace the Volcano Room’s rocky stage and brings to life the surreal, magnificent surroundings of the Cumberland Caverns. The Emmy for Best Lighting was one of five categories for which Bluegrass Underground was nominated, including one for Technical Achievement for WCTE. At WCTE, we are proud to be the presenting station for Bluegrass Underground and overjoyed at the show’s success across the nation. Congratulations to producers Todd Mayo, Todd Jarell, lighting guru Allen Branton and his team for winning the Emmy. Bluegrass Underground can be seen Mondays at 7:30pm and Thursdays at 9:30pm right here on WCTE. GOLF o Will be played on Wed., Sept. 11, 2013 At the Heatherhurst Crag Course in Fairfield Glade All golfers, 50 years and older, are eligible to compete. Entry Deadline: August 22, 2013. The Untold Story of American Superheroines traces the fascinating evolution and legacy of Wonder Woman. From the birth of the comic book superheroine in the 1940s to the blockbusters of today, Wonder Women looks at how popular representations of powerful women often reflect society’s anxieties about women’s liberation. This course, pictured: #14, Druid Hills Fairfield Glade Intersection of N. A lion befriends a coyote. A goat guides a blind horse. A goose romances a tortoise, and so on. The growing anecdotal evidence of unlikely animal pairings has sparked scientific interest in data about interspecies bonds and animal altruism. Do animals express compassion beyond their own kind? What’s the motivation behind these unconventional friendships? Nature offers some interesting insights on why animals develop relationships outside their species. Mr.Selfridge Starring Jeremy Piven as London’s merchant prince On MASTERPIECE CLASSIC Premiering Sunday, March 31 at 9pm F ancy window displays, cosmetics counters, merchandise you can touch, and other marketing breakthroughs had to start somewhere, and they sprang from the genius of Chicago native Harry Selfridge, who combined guile, taste, boldness, the poise of a swindler, and the seductive charm of a Casanova—qualities that spelled success but also trouble. Harry was the man at the birth of modern day shopping as we know it today and treated his store like a theater of retail. Mr. Selfridge opens with the newly arrived Harry, fresh from success at Marshall Field in Chicago, checking the retail climate in London. Marshall Field pioneered the slogan, “The customer is always right.” But Harry finds that a demanding customer in England is likely to get thrown out of the store. Customers are expected to Jeremy Piven as Mr. Selfridge know what they want and, when presented with it, to make their purchase and leave. Furthermore, English ladies get their dresses from dressmakers who make house calls, and beauty products are a hush-hush subject, associated with actresses and prostitutes. But all of that is about to change. Channeling the consumer culture of the future, Harry invents a shopping experience that is a cross between theater and fantasy fulfillment. When the intrepid Frenchman Louis Blériot makes the first flight across the English Channel, Harry grandly displays the plane and pilot at Selfridges. When the Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova becomes the talk of the town, Harry invites the public to meet her at his store. Whatever the latest sensation, Harry hitches his star to it. Truly, in his personal life, as in his business, he is addicted to the sensational— which creates exciting complications for all concerned. Created by Emmy® Award-winning writer Andrew Davies (Pride and Prejudice, Bleak House), Mr. Selfridge airs on WCTE on MASTERPIECE CLASSIC, Sundays, March 31 through May 19.
