Stoughton Hospital Expands General Surgery Team
The name Michael Sloan is familiar to many
Stoughton residents but now the name comes with
a M.D. after it. Dr. Michael Sloan is a 1992 graduate
of Stoughton High School. While in high school
he excelled academically and participated in sports
as well as the Norwegian dancers. He is happy
to be back in Stoughton part time, expanding his
Madison practice into Stoughton. His ties to the
community have remained strong over the years
with his parents still living in Stoughton and having
married his Stoughton High School sweetheart.
Michael Sloan, M.D.
Dr. Sloan already sees many Stoughton residents;
General Surgeon
they drive to Madison to see him. He is happy to
come to Stoughton Hospital and see his patients “at home.” He adds,
“This is a great opportunity for UW Health to provide specialty care in the
community rather than having people coming to us.”
Symptoms of Gallbladder Disease
Gallbladder problems can cause painful attacks, often
after a high-fat meal.
Common symptoms include:
• Severe pain or aching in the upper abdomen
Pain may come or go or be consistent
• A dull ache beneath the ribs or breastbone
• Pain in the back or right shoulder blade
• Nausea, upset stomach, heartburn or vomiting
• Loss of appetite
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please
contact your physician.
The UW Health General Surgery Team
Dr. Sloan is joining fellow UW Health general surgeons Dr. David
Melnick and Dr. Emily Winslow at the Stoughton Hospital Specialty Clinic.
Their goal is to bring the quality care and service they provide at UW and
Meriter Hospitals with them to Stoughton Hospital.
The expansion of the UW Health general surgery team allows more
patients to stay at Stoughton Hospital to receive their surgical care. Many
times general surgery acts as an extension of the emergency room. A
person with appendicitis isn’t going to wait until they can get in to see
their doctor in clinic; they will seek treatment in the ER. The general
surgeon is the behind the scenes physician, many times waiting for that
emergent situation. Coming back to Stoughton, Dr. Sloan says his goal is
to treat those patients in Stoughton rather than “putting them through the
inconvenience of an ambulance ride and transferring them to Madison.”
With office hours at the Stoughton Hospital Specialty Clinic, the general
surgery team is able to see patients with a variety of concerns including:
• Gallbladder
• Small and large bowel
• Appendix
• Breast cancer
• Colon cancer
• Thyroid and pararthyroid disease
• Hernias
• Gastroesophageal reflux disease
Dr. Sloan notes the two most common general surgery operations in the
U.S. are for hernias and gallbladder disease. Both procedures are performed
at Stoughton Hospital.

Cardiac Rehab Program
Certified by Industry Leader
Stoughton Hospital is proud to announce the certification
of its cardiovascular rehabilitation program by the American
Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation
(AACVPR). Stoughton Hospital was recognized for its
commitment to improving the quality of life by enhancing
standards of care.
Cardiovascular rehabilitation
programs are designed to help
people with cardiovascular
problems including heart
attack, coronary artery bypass
grafting surgery, stable angina,
angioplasty, valve surgery,
heart transplant and stenting
procedures. Participating in a
cardiovascular rehabilitation program helps patients recover
faster and improves their quality of life. The program includes
exercise, education, counseling, and support for patients and
their families.
Stoughton Hospital’s cardiovascular rehabilitation program
participated in an application process that requires extensive
documentation of the program’s practices. AACVPR Program
Certification is the only peer-review accreditation process
designed to review individual programs for adherence to
standards and guidelines developed and published by AACVPR
and other professional societies.
Teresa Feidt, Vice President of Patient Services, notes this
was an important opportunity for Stoughton Hospital. “It’s our
priority to provide the very best care to our patients. We felt
achieving this certification would demonstrate that commitment
to our patients, families and community. I am very proud of our
cardiovascular rehabilitation staff and their dedication.”
Cardiac Rehab &
Heart Failure
Cardiac rehabilitation programs have long been shown
to provide substantial benefit to those with a variety of
heart related conditions, including history of a heart attack,
a coronary stent, bypass graft surgery, valve repair or
replacement, heart transplant, or those with chronic heart pain
(angina). Each Cardiac Rehab program is tailored to meet
an individual’s needs and goals. Components include EKG
monitored exercise, ongoing education and support related to
managing risk factors for heart disease (i.e., nutrition, exercise,
stress/depression, diabetes, tobacco use, weight management),
and communication to your physician about program findings
and progress.
Medicare has recently approved the expansion of Cardiac
Rehabilitation services to Heart Failure patients who meet
certain criteria.
If you have been diagnosed with Heart Failure, please
contact the Cardiac Rehab Department at Stoughton Hospital
at (608) 873-2314 to see if you meet the criteria for Cardiac
Rehab services under the new Medicare guidelines. Our staff
is happy to assist with any questions you may have and to help
you enroll in the program.
Benefits of Cardiac Rehabilitation

A Circle of Friends
Hi, I’m Mary Link, new Foundation Director for Stoughton
Hospital. I am a life-long member of the Stoughton
community and all of the members of the Foundation Board
are residents of the Stoughton Hospital Service area including
Edgerton, Evansville, McFarland, Oregon and Stoughton. We
are privileged to serve our friends and neighbors residing in
these communities that are so close to our hearts.
Stoughton Hospital Foundation, established in 1974, raises
friends and funds to benefit Stoughton Hospital and to support
its services and projects. Although the Foundation is often
hidden (in fact often times most forget it exists); we work
behind the scenes to provide meaningful giving opportunities
Mary Link
Foundation Director
for people seeking to give back to their community. Thanks
to hundreds of generous friends, the Stoughton Hospital
Foundation has supported numerous programs, helped to purchase medical equipment,
assisted with the renovation of existing facilities and the acquisition of new opportunities
and partnerships most recently in the Oregon Urgent Care and Physical Therapy Clinic
and Stoughton Wellness and Athletic Center.
We rely on donations from friends like you, who share our commitment to trusted
care close to home. This shared commitment has allowed us to enhance Stoughton
Hospital’s continually growing range of medical services. Please consider joining our
Circle of Friends by making a gift to support your community hospital. Your gift makes a
difference.
I hope you will stop by and say hello at either an upcoming event or at my office
located within the Stoughton Hospital. Or call me at (608) 873-2328 to learn more about
upcoming projects and giving options. I look forward to seeing you soon.
