Catholic Stoughton Stoughton - The Catholic Parishes Of Stoughton
The Catholic Parishes of Stoughton We are a collaborative of two Roman Catholic parishes of the Archdiocese of Boston serving the faith community of our town. We are deeply committed to our Lord Jesus Christ who is the source of all our faith, hope, strength, and love. Please joining us at one of our two welcoming parishes St. James Parish 560 Page Street Immaculate Conception Church 122 Canton Street Stoughton, Massachusetts Then they came to Capernaum, and on the Sabbath Jesus entered the synagogue and taught. The people were astonished at His teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes. Collaborative News FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 1, 2015 Message from the Clergy To the good people of Immaculate Conception and St. James Parishes: May the peace of Jesus Christ be with you! This week marks the inauguration of our new "combined" bulletin for the Catholic parishes of Stoughton. I want to start by thanking Erika Thornton, B. J. Gage, Paula Myers, Jen Jones and all the folks who have been working so hard on putting it together. I think you will agree with me that they have done a wonderful job. It's my hope that this new format will keep everyone up-to-date on what is happening both within the individual parishes and throughout the collaborative as well. You will notice a few new features. Fr. Derek, Fr. Eduardo, Deacon Pat, and I will be using this spot each week (on a rotating basis) to share things with you; our thoughts on that week's readings, perhaps, or on new developments at the parishes. We have also perforated the middle pages to make it easier for you to tear out certain sections you might like to post on your refrigerator, say, or carry around with you. Contact information and weekly offertory figures have been moved to the back. The bulletin will be the current size -- 8 pages, not counting inserts -- for the near future. We hope to expand in the coming months, as well as add more color and photographs. The new bulletin is a work-in-progress, so please be patient! Please know, too, that your feedback is welcome. My friends, we have been so blessed, haven't we, with such strong communities of faith. Together, we are even stronger. I see this new bulletin as but another sign of the unity we will continue to foster here in Stoughton. It is our love of the Lord that unites us and there is nothing stronger than that. May He continue to bless our efforts. Peace, ~ Fr. Joe BLESSING OF THE THROATS St. Blaise, according to legend, saved a boy who was near death from choking. Because of this, the blessing of throats has become associated with this saint. Blessings will take place during all Masses on Tuesday, February 3rd. St. James 7:00 a.m. Immaculate Conception 9:00 a.m. & 7:00 p.m. (English) Take care, brothers, that none of you may have an evil and unfaithful heart, so as to forsake the living God. Encourage yourselves daily while it is still “today,” so that none of you may grow hardened by the deceit of sin. A Closer Look at the Readings Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time That Jesus didn’t teach like the scribes was very significant. After all, it was the scribes who taught the scriptures. They were the ones who knew the religious doctrine and taught it to the people. And though frequently criticized in the Gospels, they weren’t bad people by definition. But Jesus was a teacher of a different sort altogether. It was as though he didn’t need to refer to the scriptures or to the teaching of anyone else at all. He had the authority himself. Imagine the unusual impression he must have made on his listeners! It has been suggested that Jesus was reputed to teach “with authority” because the crowds instantly recognized the truth of what he said. Why? Because he spoke the truth that was already in their hearts. ~ Hebrews 3:12-13 Regarding Charitable Contributions for 2014 Thank you for your generous contributions to our parishes! Written confirmations of your 2014 donations are now available. Please contact the parish office if you would like your donation record sent out. Please include your full name, address, and allow one week to receive your written verification. Readings !! ! The time commitment would be one hour a month every 2nd Sunday. Members from both parishes are welcome. Being a trained Eucharist Minister is a requirement and the cost is nothing but your time; and the rewards are heavenly. Thank you in advance for your time and service to God. Please contact Paula at 781-344-2073 / paulamyers3@yahoo.com if you are interested. The most treasured and sacred moments of our lives are those filled with the spirit of love. The greater the measure of our love, the greater is our joy. In the end, the development of such love is the true measure of success in life. ~ Joseph B. Wirthlin St. Anthony’s Free Market Updates St. Anthony’s Free Market is open every Friday from 9:00 a.m. to Noon, and the 2nd Thursday of the month 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. For more information, please call Christine at 781-341-0611 / c.egallagher@verizon.net We thank you very much for your generosity to our food pantry. Donations of nonperishable food can be left on the porch of our Parish Center (Religious Education Building), 2 Park Avenue, Stoughton, Monday - Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. You may also call Peg Carbone at 508-889-1385 and she will pick up food donations at your home on Thursdays. Monetary donations are welcome and very helpful in filling the needed items on our shelves. Financial donations can be sent to the parish office, please make your check out to: St. Anthony’s Free Market. Thank you from St Anthony's Free Market to the Stoughton Clergy Association for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service donations of food. Helping to feed our neighbors is a great community event. Special thanks to the First United Methodist Church and Pastor Rebecca Cho for hosting this worthwhile project. God Bless us all. Christine Gallagher St. Anthony’s Free Market Sacred Vesture Fund After many years of good service, we are looking to replace another item of our sacred vesture. We are in need of new altar server albs. An alb is a long white garment which flow from the shoulders to the ankles. The word alb means “white.” The spiritual purpose reminds the wearer of their baptism, signifying freedom from sin, purity of new life, and Christian dignity. Immaculate Conception is accepting donations for new server albs. These vestments will serve our parish community well by complimenting the liturgical tone of our ceremonies and celebrations. Donations can be made in memoriam if desired. Please speak to Barbara after Mass or call the parish office if you are interested in contributing to this important effort. Bring Your Palms to Church: All year the palms we received last Palm Sunday have stayed with us, aging and reminding us to be more mindful of our union with Christ. Now we ask you to return your palms to the parish to be burnt. The little dry palm fronts carry our whole year’s journey with all its twists and turns. The burning symbolically offers the past year into the Lord’s hands and the ashes are given back to us on Ash Wednesday in the form of a smudge on our forehead. A sign that the Lord forgives and heals and works with us to transforms our lives a new. There will be baskets for your palms at all the entrances of the church. Do You Know A Home Bound Parishioner? Because we are human, we get sick. Sometimes, it’s just a cold. Many times it’s an illness that causes us or one of our loved ones to find getting to Church difficult or not possible. When such events take place, please let us know. Arrangements can be made to schedule a visit from a volunteer Minister of Holy Communion or one of our priests for Anointing of the Sick. Contact Barbara at the parish office for more information. Regarding Your Donation Checks: Your monetary gift to Immaculate Conception and its various ministries is very much appreciated. To facilitate your donation being credited appropriately, please make all checks payable to Immaculate Conception Church and in the in memo section please indicate your special intention: Life Teen, St. Anthony’s Free Market, etc. Thank you! Religious Education First Penance is Saturday, February 14th at 10:00 a.m. Please keep our students in your prayers. If we acknowledge our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from every wrongdoing. ~ 1 John 1:9 ŽŵƵŶŝĚĂĚĞWŽƌƚƵŐƵĞƐĂ ! Many Catholics, young and old, face opportunities every day to share their faith with others but lack the basic knowledge and confidence to do so. Why Catholic? has a rich scriptural and catechetical approach that gives a solid foundation for every Catholic to be an evangelizer. Why Catholic? is a unique opportunity for our parish community to reclaim our Catholic identity and make our faith not only more meaningful, but truly alive! Groups are now forming for Lent and all are welcome. A six weeks program will start Monday, February 16th, 7:00 -8:30 p.m. Slots are available in groups that will meet on Monday or Tuesdays evenings. For more information, please call Paula at IC at 781-344-2073. Lent is will soon be here as Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lenten season. Observed by penance, reflection, and fasting Ash Wednesday prepares us for Christ's Resurrection on Easter Sunday. This year Ash Wednesday falls on Wednesday, February 18th. While it is not a Holy Day of Obligation, all are encouraged to attend Mass on this day in order to mark the beginning of the Lenten season.
