Concept

Europlanet RI is a full « Infrastructure network » supporting and
enhancing our use of space missions, earth-based telescopes, simulation and
data analysis tools, lab and field site facilities

The main objective is to provide services and tools to the community!
 Access to lab facilities, field sites, extreterrestrial matter samples repositories
 Access to all information sources via a web interface (IDIS) to evolve into a « Virtual
Planetary Observatory »

Done by a combination of 3 types of activities
 Networking activities (science communication activities within the lab network and
with the outside world)
 Trans National Access (TNA) and Service Activities (SA)
 Joint Research Activities (JRA): research and development activities aiming at
IMPROVING the use and scientific return of our Research infrastructures in
planetary sciences

NA2 focuses
on networking the European planetary science community, and on identifying the major
questions of current and future European planetary science, relating them to the Research
Infrastructure that Europlanet RI is developing, and placing them in a more global
context

NA2 organizes annual ISSI workshops
and an expert exchange program to improve the scientific impact of this Infrastructure


NA2 Expert Exchange Activities

The main objective of the Expert Exchange Program is to support the activities
of Europlanet RI with experts whenever it is needed. The programme provides
funding for expert short visits with the goal of improving infrastructure facilities
and services offered to the scientific community by the Europlanet RI
participant (contractor) laboratories or institutes.

All applications were made by using the electronic forms that are located in
the NA2 website (https://europlanet-scinet.fi/)

There has been four calls between July 2009 and August 2010.
The funding for each call varied from 20 K€ to 30 K€.

Activities in the coming year
 Organized meteor observing campaigns involving international students and
amateur astronomers, in Manalon and Parnon, Greece, as well as Gahberg,
Austria (Aug 10-14, 2010).
 Captured more than 3000 meteors with double camera stations for meteor
trajectory reconstruction and subsequent analysis.
 Results to be reported at EPSC 2010.

Information Service (IDIS)

Main strategic Goal:
 Creation of an integrated and distributed information service, providing
remote access to data produced by space missions, ground-based telescopes,
laboratory and field facilities, sample collections, and giving additional tools to
use, combine, analyse the data, and compare them to numerical simulations
and model predictions
 IDIS is being made to evolve towards an information access system providing
interoperability of a wide range of different information and data sources and
access tools, located in different data centers, including virtual observatory-like
access services to data sets suitable for this approach.

Structure of IDIS: composed by
 a Service Activity (WP 21) and
 a Joint Research Activity (WP 25)

The IDIS SA is available to the Planetary Science community as a first
port of call for finding, retrieving and manipulating any kind of useful data.
It receives inputs from the community and from other Europlanet tasks, in
different forms (technical demonstrator reports, interactive catalogue
access to computer models and analysis algorithms, routines enabled for
high-performance computing, and so on).

JRA 4 is the JR devoted to IDIS. Its role is to extend SA IDIS capabilities
and prepare/implement virtual observatory services in various fields of
planetary sciences.
