Page 16, Between The Palms MGA News By Tim Cooney coondogsr1@yahoo.com We are now in the “heart of the season” where everything gets a little busy. At present we have 592 members, which is 47 members ahead of last year’s numbers. There are 188 Gold members, 130 Silver, and 274 White Tee members. Participation has been great so far and with the 383 members signed up to play on January 8th, we began our morning and afternoon shotguns. I think we can expect to have morning and afternoon sessions pretty regularly at least until the end of March. As in past years, we will rotate the groups (Gold, Silver, and White) through the afternoon sessions. Pace of play has been pretty good with exception of January 8th – but we will blame that one on the wind! Why does it seem that on a golf course the wind is always in your face? The MGA has distributed $6,308 in prize money through December. While December was a short month event wise; members winning in 2 of our 3 events were: John Rogers, John Reyman, Frank Basso, Tom Skinner, Dave Steadman, John Truesdale, Stan Ehrlich, and Jim McEnany from the Gold Tees, Francis Oberembt, Ron Elderkin, Dick Hoye, and Paul Suprenant from the Silver Tees, and Roger Johnson, Gene Hulick, Paul Coogan, Gary Johnson, and J. D. Lamont from the Whites. Congratulations Gentlemen! February will be a busy month for the MGA. We begin the month with our Annual Harry Chapin Lunch and Fundraiser on February 5th. As in past years we truly appreciate the support of our membership to support this charity. For each dollar we donate, the Harry Chapin organization is able to turn that into $6 of food for those less fortunate. So far this year we have raised $813 (equivalent of $4878 in food for the needy) in the two 50/50 raffles. This year’s event will feature a delicious lunch, our final 50/50 raffle, and we will also auction off a MASTER’S GOLF TOURNAMENT PRACTICE ROUND PACKAGE at the luncheon. The auctions in the past have been very successful, so come prepared to win the tickets and check the Masters off of your bucket list. If it is not on your bucket list it should be. Augusta looks much better in person than on TV. The rest of February shapes up as follows: Feb. 5th: Harry Chapin Lunch - Four Man Scramble Feb. 12th: First Round of Match Play and Two Best Balls of Four Feb. 19th: Match Play Round 2 and Four Man Team Quota Feb. 26th: Match Play Round 3 and Two Best Balls of Four MARK YOUR CALENDARS – JANUARY 12TH IS ALSO THE SIGN UP FOR THE ONE DAY MGA MEMBER/MEMBER (to be played March 19th). The sign up will be available on Chelsea. Did You Hear About – Richard Parent’s EAGLE on #7 Royal. Rumor has it that his third shot was 138 yards. Dennis Feld’s “no putt” birdie on #3 Royal! He chipped from one side of the green to the hole, which was located on the opposite side. How about our MGA President Fred Cox playing the ball where it lies and hitting out of the muck and yuck on Sabal 3? (See the photo) Good thing he plays left handed! Fred, taking one for the team. CONGRATULATIONS RICHARD, DENNIS and FRED! Did you also hear that for the past 3 weeks there have been no errors on the scorecards for Thursday’s rounds! GREAT JOB! There are only a couple of spots remaining in the MGA Member/Guest to be played on April 2nd. This was a terrific event last year and promises to be even more so this year. Sign up is available in the pro shop. Being a member of the MGA is a great way to meet new friends. However, if for some reason you are having difficulty meeting new people, try picking up the wrong golf ball! Hit ’em straight! Myers, FL 33908 Just North of The Forest Hours: Tues.-Sat. 10-5 Between The Palms, Page 17 Santa’s Helpers By Skip Collins HP Member This fall I began volunteering at an after-school reading program at the AFCAAM (AFrican CAribbean AMerican) Center on Michigan Avenue, which is supported by Catholic Charities. The program is available to children from kindergarten to fifth grade who are behind in their reading skills. They receive instruction from teachers and one-onone reading help from volunteers. Most of the children have ability but come from family situations that are unable to provide the nurturing necessary to allow their natural capacity for learning to bloom. AFCAAM’s program provides that support, and, in my short time there, I have seen several children bloom like flowers up north in the springtime. At Christmas time, the Center puts on a party for all 72 children and their families with singing of carols and giving of gifts to the children. The children, with intensive practice guided by one of the teachers, are the principal entertainment for the evening and they do a splendid job; however, such an evening requires musical accompaniment, and, of course, a visit from Santa Claus. Alas, this year the program director was unable to locate neither a piano player nor a Saint Nick! Knowing that our own Nancy Coates plays each year for the Heritage Palms tree lighting ceremony, I took the liberty of asking her if she would help out on December 18 Nancy Coates at AFCAAM. She graciously agreed. For Santa, I thought immediately of another HP resident, Lew Lipsit, who played the role of Santa in many similar settings within HP. Unfortunately, Lew and Merry, his wife and occasional Santa’s helper, were going out of town that week. In a stroke of luck, when I called Nancy Coates to confirm her appearance at AFCAAM, she was not at home, so I spoke with her husband Randy. Toward the end of our very pleasant conversation, I asked if he had ever been a Santa Claus. To my surprise, he said he had done so on many occasions but that his Santa outfit was at his northern residence in Canada. Fortunately, Lew had not yet left town and graciously agreed to loan his Santa suit for the occasion. Thanks to the support of these HP residents the children and their families had a wonderful evening. I hope the accompanying pictures will give you a sense of how much delight the participation of Nancy and Randy added to the occasion. Christmas For A Princess Logan & Bre’s daughter Addison is 21 months old; she’ll be two in April...and their little princess had a Christmas designed for a princess at their new home in Punta Gorda, where they moved a year ago. Logan’s mom and dad (Addison is their only grand so far) also live in Punta Gorda, and Logan’s sister Ashley and her husband Matt Woodliff came from Seattle to celebrate. Ashley took pictures and videos of Addison’s Christmas and you MUST check out the YouTube video Logan posted. Here’s the link: http:// youtu.be/ImXN52x67IE You will fall in love with Addison. By Jane McWeeny janemcweeny16@gmail.com The LNHGA hosted a fashion show presented by Chico’s of Bell Tower on Sunday evening, January 18th. All ladies in the community were invited, and within three days the event was sold out! 200 ladies enjoyed our fashion event titled, “A Salute to the Presidents.” It featured past presidents of the LNH and WGA as fashion models. Jean Berghauser, Barbara Martens Greg, Paula Kraft, Anne Sweeney, Marlene Kluch, Nancy Campbell, Eileen Wood and Sharon Waldsmith were gorgeous, sporting apparel representing Chico’s golf line, spring luncheon and evening apparel. The ladies were escorted onto the runway by our handsome and debonair Pro Shop guys, JD and Mike. Katie (L-R): Jean Berghauser, Marlene Kluch, Sharon Waldsmith & Nancy Campbell Red shouldered hawk – by Stasia Arcarese Spoonbill at J. Ding Darling – By Ed Keller Committee L-R: Melody Smothers, Chico Store Manager Katie LaPierce, Jane McWeeny & Trudy Cleary. Missing Rosann Salvaggio. LaPiere, Bell Tower store manager, read a short biography about each of the presidents as they made their way down a runway to a platform stage. An accessory table beautified with the best of Chico’s necklaces, earrings, and bracelets decorated the entranceway just inside the Clubhouse. A vase, garnished with a white floral arrangement, was next to a framed flyer of the event, listing the names of the models and the outfits they wore. The ambiance of the room was elegance! The tables were dressed in black and white and decorated with a Chico carrier bag. Candlelight enhanced the tables. Each table enjoyed tiers of smoked salmon crostini, hoisin-sweet chili brushed with chicken pate, and sun dried tomato rolled and pesto stuffed goat cheese roll, served with assorted crackers and flatbread. Mini petit fours were served for dessert. A glass of wine to compliment this was a must! Door prizes were donated by Chico’s, and each attendee received a table favor special mailer that included discounts to use at their stores. HPL9HGA News.... on page 19 Between The Palms, Page 19 HPL9HGA News.... from page 18 The LNHGA thanks Angie Heeman, district sales manager, Katie LaPier, Bell Tower’s store manager, and Haley Rogers, office manager for their eagerness and enthusiasm during this event. Committee members Trudy Cleary, Jane McWeeny, Rosann Salvaggio, and Melody Smothers express HUGE thanks to these Chico ladies, and to our HP member, Peggy Dyson for her assistance. We also thank our wonderful Clubhouse and Pro Shop staff, and everyone who attended the show. This event would not have been as successful as it was without each of your input and involvement. Lastly, all that attended were extended an invitation to a brunch and a “closed shop day” by Chico’s. The event was fun and exciting, and “the perks” left everyone smiling.
