A Message from our Principal
Inside the Shouting Spartan:
This past spring has seen a wide array of great academic,
athletic and arts events at Archbishop O’Leary!
CHAPLAIN’S NEWS
The Summer Concert celebrated and showcased the musical
talents of our Jazz and Concert bands, and the Drama musical
“Back to the Eighties,” was a crowd favorite.
Spartans Wrestling, Rugby, Golf, Track and Soccer teams
competed, with our Junior Varsity Men’s, Varsity Women’s and
Varsity Men’s teams all raising City Championship Banners!
Congratulations as well to the Junior Varsity Women’s team on
capturing a silver medal in the Championship game. Numerous
student-athletes competing in the City and Provincial Track
Championships as well. The Athletics banquet was also a
resounding success celebrating the talents of all of our student
athletes.
As always, the staff is so proud of the artistic, musical and
athletic abilities of our students, and we love to celebrate their
talent!
We celebrated with our senior class at beautiful graduation
ceremonies on June 2nd and 3rd. It was a special two days, and
on behalf of the staff, I want to wish our graduates all the best
as they embark on the next chapter of their lives, wherever that
may take them.
Our school year is quickly coming to a close, and I want to wish
all of our students and their families a safe and enjoyable
summer. It has truly been an honor serving Archbishop O’Leary
as your principal this past year, leading a team of wonderful
educators and support staff. I want to thank our staff, students
and parents for making O’Leary a great place for kids!

Chaplain’s Report
Another school year has come and gone here at O’Leary. It has been a fun
filled year with grade level retreats, celebrations at school, mass at St. Matthews,
amazing social justice initiatives where we have gathered together to help others,
along with many opportunities to get out into the community to volunteer and show
our Spartan pride!
As a school community we helped support the following agencies by providing
student volunteers: St. Matthew’s Study Buddy program, the Edmonton Foodbank,
the Marian Center, Santas Anonymous, the Christmas Hamper drive. The total
number of people who volunteered during the 2015/2016 school year during school
led opportunities is: 389 students. That is fantastic! Congratulations!
During the Advent season, we once again participated in O’Leary’s decade’s old
tradition of collecting items for Christmas Hampers and helping to deliver them on
behalf of the Christmas Bureau. We partnered with St. Matthew’s Elementary School
and assembled and delivered 50 hampers for the Christmas Bureau and had 9
additional hampers delivered to families in need in our immediate community.
During the Lenten season, we collected clothing and shoes for the clients of
YESS. The Youth Empowerment and Support Services is always in need. We were
able to fill a whole school van full of donations and deliver it to YESS. We have a
long standing relationship with YESS and are always happy to help them out.

When the Fort McMurray fires occurred, our Grade 12 students were going out on
their Grade 12 retreat to Camp Nakamun. The students who were in attendance talked
about what was happening and decided that they wanted to help support the families of
Fort McMurray. Students spent time on the retreat formulating a plan and the project
would be called O’Leary Helping Hands. When we came back from the retreat the plan
went into action. The activities were as follows: monetary donations were made during
TA, students wrote messages of support on hands to the students of Fort McMurray and
the hands were mounted on a poster, items were being collected in the main office, a
fundraiser BBQ was planned for Thursday May 26. The BBQ was run by the Grade 12
students from the retreat along with 2 Knights of Columbus from St. Charles Parish.
We had Capital DJ services come out and DJ the event for us. Thank you to Glen Millar
for providing us with the great music! Gino DeLuca donated all the hot dogs, buns,
water, and chips for the BBQ. Thank you Gino! The Knights of Columbus from St. John
Bosco parish donated $500.00 to our fundraiser. In total over several of the events we
collected $5473.25 that will be donated to the Red Cross on behalf of Archbishop
O’Leary High School. Thank you to all students and staff for their contributions to this
great cause!
I think it’s fair to say that everyone is proud to be a Spartan! We do so many
great things here at O’Leary! I look forward to hearing about all the great initiatives
planned for years to come. This is my last year serving as O’Leary’s School Chaplain,
as I am moving into a new role at a different school. It has been such an honor and
such a pleasure being a part of this great family! I have had the opportunity to witness
so many of you learn and grow in your faith. My favorite memories are spending time
with students on retreat and in the community volunteering! Thank you for leaving me
with such heartwarming memories, and teaching me so much! May God bless each and
every one of you as you continue on at O’Leary and for those that are leaving, God will
continue to bless you on your new journey.

Way of the Cross 2016
Good Friday 2016 was a special one for the
Archbishop O’Leary community, as students
and teachers participated in this year’s Outdoor Way of the Cross. This annual walk
winds its way through downtown Edmonton
to spread an important message on social
justice. Each year, organizers choose a
theme for the stations where the participants
share music, reflection and prayer. This
year, the theme was Transformation: Our
Selves and Our World. Of the six stations,
three pointed to elements of the local economy, including a call for decent work and economic security, an end to poverty, and a call
for food security, in hopes of ending hunger. The station that Archbishop O’Leary and
its Braided Journeys’ program organized was at Ambrose Place, where students read a
message in support of safe communities and ecological action. Ambrose Place houses
chronically homeless Indigenous people. There, students and teachers from Archbishop
O’Leary spent Good Friday cooking and serving brunch for their residents and sharing
their message against climate change with all the participants in the Way of the Cross.

Youth Environmental Leadership Summit
Archbishop O’Leary High School was the only school in Edmonton selected to
participate in the Youth Environmental Leadership Summit 2016. With a team of four
students, Mai Huynh, Precious Abidogun, Audrey Law, and Jenny Le, and two
teachers, Jennifer Mac Cormac and Macarena Alamo Santos, Archbishop O’Leary
represented the North Saskatchewan River Basin in this unique event. Students and
teachers from 20 high schools across Alberta gathered in Canmore on March 10 to 13
for Inside Education’s Navigate 2016 Youth Water and Environmental Leadership
Summit. This unique three-day conference was an opportunity to examine Alberta’s
water story and gain support towards making a valuable impact. During the
conference, students and teachers heard from many of the province’s leading water
experts. The program exposed delegates to the science, issues, innovations and
careers related to Alberta’s water. Special guest speakers included National
Geographic “Adventurer of the Year,” Julie Angus; Deputy Minister, Alberta Agriculture
and Forestry, Beverly Yee; and Google Science Fair winner, Hayley Todesco.

Students' Union Thank You
Plunger Olympics, Friends Trivia Game, Father Catfish week, a barbeque fundraiser for
Fort McMurray were the final days of May and June. The SU handed out cookies to all
students the last day of classes to celebrate success and survival. Thanks to every
student who supported the SU this year. Your participation and support for our events
helped make for a fun year.

Cultural Heritage Day 2016
At the end of May, O'Leary came together to celebrate the diversity of our student
population at Cultural Heritage Day 2016. With students proudly displaying their
country, we gathered in unity over lunch time to celebrate and showcase the
multiculturalism that exists within the walls of our school. Staff and students
gathered in the cafeteria to taste some food from around the world as well as to
enjoy performances by our very own students. All money fundraiser was donated to
the Red Cross in order to help out the Fort McMurray Fire Efforts.

Second in the U of A’s Brain Bee Competition
After a few months of intense studying and preparation, six high school students from
Archbishop O’Leary participated in the annual Brain Bee competition put on by the
Faculty of Neuroscience at the University of Alberta. Participants were asked a series of
questions on the topics of brain anatomy and function, as well as intelligence, memory,
emotions, sensations, stress, and neurological disease and treatment. All questions had
to be answered verbally within one minute. Four of our students, Taylor MacKinnon,
Katrien Clintberg, Michelle Everitt and Aanu Ajayi, made it to the end of the second
round. Two O’Leary students made it to the final round
of three students, and Aanu Ajayi placed second in the
city overall!

Many Hands Make Delicious Work
The staff of Archbishop O’Leary High School spent part of their recent Professional
Learning Day lending a hand—their fingers, actually—at our local Ukrainian Catholic
Parish. About 80 staff members attended a workshop at Exaltation of the Holy Cross
Ukrainian Catholic Parish where we learned how to stuff and pinch perogies for the
church to sell for fundraising. From the welcome message on the sign outside to the
army of babas who suited us up in aprons and hairnets, we were made to feel very
welcome and appreciated. All in all, our staff churned out about 700 dozen perogies,
which, if you’re curious, amounts to 400 pounds of potatoes. We are grateful that we
could spend our service afternoon with the hardworking and patient volunteers at Holy
Cross.

Career Cosmetology Program
The career cosmetology program is a new initiative for Edmonton Catholic that follows
the Career and Technology Studies (CTS) Apprenticeship Pathway, is approved by the
Provincial Apprenticeship Committee and Apprenticeship Industry Training Act. Students
who complete this pathway are eligible to write the apprenticeship and industry training
exam for advanced standing and completion of both period one and two of technical
training in hairstyling.
What does this mean? Essentially students who successfully complete 50 specified
courses in hairstyling, cosmetology and esthetics (with 70% overall average or higher)
and are registered into a contract of apprenticeship will have completed all technical
training for their trade as a hairstylist.
Why is this so exciting? Because these students do not have to continue on to
postsecondary. This fast-tracks the student into the workplace from high school,
providing them with a quality education and no financial burden or extra time or hassle
required to apply to a new school. Most post-secondary programs last approximately
nine months and cost between $13,000 and 18,000. Inflated tuition costs have led to
increased turnover in the hairstyling industry; when beginning stylists, who are trying
to build a clientele, have financial burdens related to schooling, they experience added
stress. Providing such training in high school can minimize their financial burden.
What happens after training at Spartan Hair Academy? Students transition from their
training at Archbishop O’ Leary into the workplace. They complete their apprenticeship
hours as an employee of a local salon, where they continue to grow as professional
stylists.

Mock Disaster
April 28 was a complete success! Archbishop O’Leary High School’s introductory and
intermediate sports medicine students got to practise their first-aid skills on advanced
sports medicine students who simulated injured patients. Our students worked with EMS
and firefighters to assess and triage the patients during a mock mass-casualty bus crash
at Archbishop O’Leary. These students, who got to utilize their skills in a life-like
situation alongside the professional staff that we rely on day to day, gained such an
appreciation of how demanding and how amazing these skills are when performed at a
mastery level. Immersing the students in such life-like situations is extremely enriching
and inspires them to seriously consider these future careers.
A huge shout out to the Archbishop O’Leary Cosmetology students, who provided the
very realistic makeup to show injuries! And many thanks to the EMS and firefighters
who worked aside our very lucky students. It was an amazing day that students will not
soon forget!

Production Performance Academy
Archbishop O’Leary’s Production Performance Academy wrapped up another successful
season with “Back to the Eighties” Alumni show the end of April. Held for the first time
off campus at the Westbury theatre and dedicated to former drama teacher Mr.
Stevenson and Former Student Crystal Montgomery. It’s been an amazing semester in
Academy. Our students were able to experience a professional theatre setting by
performing the musical “Back to the Eighties” in the Westbury theatre, along with
having some fun performing the play “Airline” which was held in the archbishop O’Leary
drama room. Back to the eighties got such a big reaction that some of the students
were interviewed on the news along with being a spotlight on Shaw television. To start
off the year the students performed a slap stick comedy play called Airline which was
about a former drill sergeant, a couple failing stewardesses, and two pilots who have
“gone bananas” trying to save a failing airline when the owner of the company decides
to take a flight to inspect the plane and how his business is running. This play was full of
laughs, jokes, and downright silliness that the audience loved. Coming off of the energy
of the last show the students were ready to jump right into the musical that we picked
called “Back to the Eighties.” This show was unique because we dedicated the show to
former drama teacher Mr. Stevenson and former student Crystal Montgomery, so this
show had a ton of emotion and meaning behind it and that became extremely evident
when the students got together as a team and took this show to a whole new level.
Another cool and unique opportunity that the students got to endure was the addition to
bringing back the alumni from this show that performed the same show six years ago.
The students were able to gain great insight on their future after the academy and see
that the relationships they have built in the academy will not fade, that the friendships
they build in this class are not only friendships but almost like a family relationship since
they have been through so much to put out a great show that they really learn to each
other are.
We are Looking Forward to another upcoming season of theatre and drama here at
O’Leary, Have a great summer, and to the Graduating Academy Students, You will be
missed!!!

Thank you to the fabulous CHOIR and Musicians who led music for the Archbishop
O’Leary Graduation Liturgy on Thursday June 2nd. We are grateful for their time, energy
and enthusiasm for our school as, in addition to singing and playing, they worked all
day in preparation for this important event. Thank you specifically to Trish Juanillo for
writing the “Grad” song this year entitled: “Fly On”. She performed that song at our
Graduation this year along with rhythm guitar player Loughlann Collins. Amazing talent!

O’LEARY BADMINTON
The O’Leary Badminton season ended with O’Leary losing in the Division 3 finals. Two
of our players also made it to the Edmonton zone finals, Lean Macapagal and Keith
Tran. It was a hard fought but well played season. From the start, the team faced
many challenges such as random practice times at different venues. We even
considered matches hosted at Queen E as our home games. The players of O’Leary
Badminton enjoyed the competition. All the games, all the sets, all the matches, every
player strived to win and give it their all. No one took their time on the team for
granted. We had 2 hour practices after competitions. Everyone was just happy to be
on the court and simply wanting to play. Mr. Viardo commends every player for their
strong dedication and their support for each other.

Congratulations to our Spartans Wrestling Team who competed in the Provincial
Championships this past weekend at Bev Facey High School. Congratulations to Josh
Cober who won gold in the Men's 90kg division, and Savannah Moen who won bronze.

The 2015 - 2016 version of the Archbishop O'Leary golf team represented the school
at a number of events including the Ft. Saskatchewan High School Tournament, City
Championships, Bev Facey Invitational and the Salisbury High School

The O’Leary Cheer Team closed off their season with a FIRST place finish in the super
Co-ed division at the Stampede City Showdown in Calgary. Our extended thanks go
out to the seniors on the team: Mai-ya Corrigan, Madison Reginato, Bay-Lee Windsor,
Lee-Marie Seal, Dakota La-Cour-Sierre-Toma, Breanne Collison, David Percia, Vanessa
Currey, and Rachel Mason.

JUNIOR GIRLS BASKETBALL
"This seasons edition of the Junior Girls Basketball team was exciting to watch as they
were one of the top contenders in Division 1. Led by captains Tayler Allen and
Margreat Idi, the girls had a fantastic season, winning all three of their tournaments
at M.E.Lazerte, Ardrossan and St.FX. At the end of the regular season, the girls
finished third and after a solid win over Bev Facey in the Quarter finals, they went on
to win Semi’s in a nail-biting 1 point victory over Archbishop Jordan. This put our
Spartans in the City Final Championship game for the second season in a row, against
powerhouse Jasper Place. The girls played a hard game, but injuries, illness and
absence of a few players resulted in a tough loss. However, 2nd place in the city was
still a fantastic finish to a hard fought season! Coach Croft thanks every team member

SENIOR GIRLS BASKETBALL
The Senior Spartans finished the season with strong outings in the Rose Tournament
at Sir Winston Churchill in Calgary and at the MAC tournament. Unfortunately the
team missed playoffs by one seed but finished off the regular season with consecutive
wins against Ainlay and rival Shep. The team really clicked at the end of the season
with some of the best basketball played all season.
The Lady Spartans will come into next season with a more experienced
and deeper team based around a strong core group of current grade elevens. During
the off season the girls are participating in spring league and basketball camps
throughout the province. We look forward to what they will bring to the court for the
2016-2017 season. The team will also be showcasing its talent at a tournament in
Victoria mid-December with teams throughout Canada and the western States.
The team would like to recognize grade twelve players Yawa Idi, Raven Doucette,
Jasmine Ryley, and co-captain Caity Mazur. All four girls showed what it means to be
a Spartan and were great role models for the rest of the team. We wish you the best
in your future endeavors outside of high school.

JUNIOR BOYS BASKETBALL
The Junior Boys Basketball team had a tremendous season filled with many
memories and successes. The team began the year with only 3 returning players
and 10 rookies, however goals were set high and the team worked incredibly hard
to achieve them. Through competing in the Jasper Place and St. FX tournaments,
the boys gained valuable experience which helped lead them to a regular season
record of 9-1 record in Metro Edmonton Division One. The team battled Ross
Shepard in playoffs and unfortunately as the last shot was taken and the buzzer
sounded,
the
Spartans
fell
2
points
short.
The team would like to thank Josh Itliong, Isaiah Samuels and Ian Del Rosario who
finished their Junior Basketball careers this season. They were the heart and soul
of the team and helped teach many valuable lessons to the younger players. The
team ultimately fell short of their goal of winning a city championship, but they will
be consistently reminded of the relationships and friendships that were developed
throughout the season. This team started as a collection of individuals and
developed into a family. Congratulations on a tremendous season boys!
SENIOR BOYS BASKETBALL
Congratulations to the senior boys basketball team who won the city
championships defeating their long time rivals Harry Ainlay 92-80.
The team
continued on to provincials as the #1 Edmonton and provincial seed but fell short
of their goal of become provincial champions. Special congratulations to Frank
Filice who has dedicated over 25 years to the Spartan basketball program as well
as the numerous grade 12 students leaving the team this year, many of whom will
continue to pursue their dreams of playing professional basketball.

O’LEARY GIRLS RUGBY
The 2016 Spartan Rugby season was a season of many storylines - Grade 10 players
showing early flashes of brilliance and determination, Grade 11 players greatly
improving from their rookie season, and Grade 12 players finally putting together all
of their rugby knowledge and experience.
Our early season began with alot of question marks - which players would play where,
who would be returning, and what potential would our first year players have.
However, we soon realized we had a team of hard working and tough players, girls
who would give it their all and be open to learning as much as possible. Our team this
year also became a tight-knit unit. The element of the team that the coaches were
most proud of was the sisterhood that emerged between all of the girls.
Our official season record of 1-3-1 does not accurately reflect how well our team
played throughout the year. We were able to tie a Spruce Grove team that has beaten
us handily in the past two seasons, put up hard fights against powerhouse Division 2
Schools Sturgeon and Memorial (who eventually would become Division 2 City
Champions), and we shut out M.E. Lazerte for our first win of the season. The girls
also played tremendously well in 4 tournaments throughout the season, playing
against great schools from Calgary and Division 1 squads from Edmonton. We had a
great showing at the Pirates 7s Tournament and placed 3rd at the Clearwater 7s
Tournament in Calgary. Unfortunately, in the last game of the season, the girls came
up short and missed making the playoffs by 1 point. However, this disappointment
will no doubt fuel their fire for next season to leave everything on the field, and to
prove that the Spartans live up to their team creed of "Respect All, Fear None."
A special thanks is owed to the team behind the team. Our three managers - Wendy,
Megan, and Taylor - were a huge support to the entire coaching staff all season long.
Further, the Spartan Ladies Rugby team would not be possible without the support
and hard work of Ms. Mast. Finally, to our incredible and dedicated coaching staff Casey Ouellet, Abby Bonin, and Daria Rosanova - there is no one else Coach Gervais
would rather lead girls onto the field without than you girls. Thank you for everything.
And regarding Coach Grevais! The most selfless outside coaches O'Leary has to date
for without her there would be NO girls Rugby at O'Leary! It is always hoped that the
girls always appreciate what they have! Thanks ALWAYS Steph for all you do! You are
so very special to us!

O’LEARY BOYS RUGBY
This season brought many triumphs for the Boys Rugby Team. It was highlighted by a
string performance by the team in the premier division. The season saw 60 boys
selected to the roster, and the team playing in a total of 35 games in their league,
tournaments, and exhibition matches. By the end of the regular season the team saw
itself finish in the 3rd ranked position going into playoffs. While the playoff campaign
did not end in a city championship berth, the team has accomplished some amazing
feats this season. With 37 returning roster members for next year the future for the
Boys Rugby Team looks to be very bright.
The Fitness Centre is OPEN!
The Fitness Center has moved! Kirby is now set up in the garage by the soccer
fields. No reason to stop your work out! Let's continue those workouts, until the new
facility is done. Healthy body, healthy mind.

JUNIOR GIRLS SOCCER
The Junior Girls Soccer Team had a great season this year! A primarily new team was
created with seven grade 10’s and eleven grade 11 students. The Junior Girls had lots
of fun playing together this season! The team had 4 wins, 1 tie and 1 loss in the
regular season and continued into the championship game where they unfortunately
lost to Archbishop MacDonald in the final with a score of 2-1. Well done ladies! Your
coaches, Mrs. Mazur and Ms. Mandaliti, are really proud of your hard work this season.
Looking forward to next year!
JUNIOR BOYS SOCCER
The Junior Boys Soccer team had an interesting season with some ups and downs
along the way. Although they scored more goals than any other team, they also
conceded more goals in regular season play. Fortunately, when the stakes were
raised, the boys found their groove, winning their last three games with clean
sheets. Congratulations to all the players on winning the Metro Athletics City
Championship!

SENIOR GIRLS SOCCER
Starting with the first tryout, it was very clear that this years’ team was going to be
special. This was a highly competitive, hard-working, and very talented group of girls all
displaying their skills vying for a spot on the roster. At the end of tryouts, we had chosen
a group of 19 gifted and dedicated girls all with a common goal of raising a championship
banner. We started the season with the U of A tournament and although we lost two
games, the girls used it as a learning experience and never looked back. With each game
of the season, the girls improved and played better and better as a team. The team
finished the regular season undefeated, and moved on to the playoffs where the girls
played their best soccer, ultimately winning the championship and realizing their goal of
raising our banner. The coaches would like to thank each of the girls for having a
memorable and wonderful season. To those who leave the O'Leary field as graduating
players: good luck and all the best in the future! Once a Spartan, always a Spartan!
SENIOR BOYS SOCCER
The Sr. Boys soccer team had another great season. The boys went the entire season
undefeated, successfully defending their title as city champions. A big thank you goes out
to the entire team for all their hard work and dedication to the program. We wish all the
seniors success in the future.

The track team had its best year in decades! It was topped off by our Jr. Girls winning
the City Championship beating perennial champion Scona! Special congratulations goes
out to individual performances winning medals at Cities and Provincials and setting the
following records:
Toni Burse: City champion Gold in J r. Shot P ut, Silver in Triple J ump, Silver in 4
x 100 relay, Provincial Silver in Shot Put, and a NEW PROVINCIAL RECORD in Shot Put
of 12.19 m.
Paige Patterson: Silver in the City championship in J r. 800m, Bronze in 1500 m
and javelin, and setting new school records in the 3000 m of 11:14.75 and the 800 m
2:23.23!
Cassie Matlock: City champion Gold and N EW CI TY RECORD in J r. J avelin of
39.24 m! Bronze in the 4 x 100 relay and bronze in the 80 m hurdles.
Monica Dickson: Silver in the City championship in J r. 400 m, Silver in the 4 x
100 relay and bronze in triple jump.
Magloire Loki: City champion Gold and new school record in J r. Triple jump of
12.72 m.
Peter Okumu: Silver in the City championship in J r. Long J ump.

As this time of the academic year and its end begins to approach, we begin to review and
take stock of the many fine lessons learned and the value provided. One of the most important
we teach as a Catholic school system is the worth of a person’s word. To give one’s word means
to intend a promise or to offer an assurance: that is, that everything agreed and accepted by
one will be provided to another, as in ‘you have my word’. Such a promise ought never to be
taken lightly. One’s word is a reflection of one’s honour and very soul. This is a lesson which we
help our students to understand and nurture through the Faith, moral lessons and esteemed
values we have willingly received, accepted and embraced. Indeed, our word and its expression
in follow through is what strengthens our public reliability and reflects our dignity as persons.
For Christians, our word is first given on our behalf at our Baptism. As infants, that word is
entrusted to others in parents and godparents who extend the worth of their own good word on
behalf of their little one. Eventually that word is returned and entrusted to the young individual
who will continue to take care of and build it up as he or she matures into adulthood. So, we
who then gave our word at our Confirmation remember that such a word is binding and we
come to understand and appreciate all the better the responsibility that follows. This word may
again be given in the sacraments of service through marriage, holy orders, or religious profession; and, it is most certainly made in our professional responsibilities as teachers and cooperating partners within our faith education. In such cases, the expression of our word is always
done publicly because one is sure and wants that word to have a force of the greatest effect.
Such is absolutely powerful to realize. To our good parents: please know we are humbled to
share and instill this lesson with your children through your assistance, just as we continue to
live it as Staff, Administration, and Clergy, and witness to it in all that we do as committed Catholics.

Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
~ Matthew 5:7 ~
This scripture passage from the Beatitudes takes on such significant
meaning for us in this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Here, Jesus is teaching his disciples about the heavenly rewards that await people who walk confidently
with God during difficult times. His guidance is twofold. It serves to remind
those who are struggling that God is with them always. It also serves to call
us to the merciful service of those who are struggling.
The Fort McMurray disaster has provided us with the opportunity to
show that mercy to which we have been called as a community of believers.
The response of our schools and sites has been a beautiful testament to this
basic tenet of our faith, mercy. Our communities have collected donations of
cash and necessities to meet those basic needs of evacuees. They have also
wholeheartedly welcomed in well over 400 students to their classrooms. It
has been so uplifting to hear stories of the empathy and compassion that our
students are showing to their peers.
Our Budget for the 2016-2017 school year is before the Board of Trustees on the evening of May 31st at their Public Board Meeting. The approved

June is a very exciting and very busy time of year for us. We have
had a great year of witnessing the growth of our students, and everyone is
preparing for summer. June 21st marks National Aboriginal Day in Canada.
Many of our students will be participating in activities that celebrate the richness of indigenous culture. That afternoon, many of our staff will be participating in professional development activities through our Aboriginal Learning
Services department that will enhance their ability to infuse indigenous perspectives into curriculum on an ongoing basis.
As the summer draws closer, we want to encourage our students to
continue enhancing their learning through participation in various community
events, outdoor activities, and celebrations. There are many great local attractions, day camps, and fun ways to keep learning over the summer. Active
participation in sports, games, music, and hobbies will allow for continued development of physical literacy skills, social skills and enhanced quality of life.
It is also wonderful to read some great books over the summer holiday; especially on a rainy day. There are many websites that offer parents ideas and
suggestions to keep students engaged with creative projects. The website

I would like to share a final thought from our Holy Father, Pope Francis. In speaking about
this Year of Mercy, he tweeted, “The Jubilee is the party to which Jesus invites us all, without excluding anyone.” What a wonderful celebration to be a part of!
I wish you all a blessed summer that is rejuvenating and filled with the wonders to be found
in time together with your families! As we prepare to celebrate Father’s Day, please join me in
praying for all individuals who provide the love and care that sustains our children on a daily basis.
Heavenly Father,
you entrusted your Son Jesus,
the child of Mary,
to the care of Joseph, an earthly father.
Bless all fathers
