Q36.5 BOOTCAMP
1st edition - COSTA SMERALDA - Sardinia
From 23rd to 30th April 2016
This is absolutely an idyllic not yet discovered cycling paradise.
The island has been under Spanish influence for nearly four
centuries - a dark period of oppression and misery. Spanish
culture penetrated Sardinian culture: churches, painting,
customs, language….and in 1720, with the Treaty of London,
the island passed to the Savoy and so to the Kingdom of Italy.
Just a short note on the history…
The island has a mild climate nearly all year round, April can
offer already sun bathing on the beach, it is slighltly wild but
with many variations of nature; the most wonderful point is that
traffic is virtually non-existent. Spaces are perfect to ride along
stunning coastal roads and inland hills.
Sardinia is not only known for its beautiful landscapes but also
for its culinary offerings.
A particular wine is “Cannonau di Sardegna”: it is a red wine,
made of Cannonau, the local name for the Grenache – one
of Sardinia’s most successful wine grapes. Nearby also
Vermentino is a light-skinned wine grape variety.
Eating, in Sardinia, means family, tradition and plates of typical
Sardinian cuisine, much like in the rest of central and southern
Italy, a reason to pass time with your dear ones, to laugh and
tell the last news, sometimes even an occasion to discuss
and argue in pure Italian style. Or, as a great-aunt said once
(scolded during a Sunday lunch since she was not touching
her typical Sardinia food): “Why? You didn’t give me the fork!”.
Once you’re at the table in Sardinia, eating is a must!
Actually, in the past the “Giro di Sardegna” was an important
appointment on the professional team calendar too, it was held
in February for a total of 5 stages.
The last event was the 29th edition in 2011.
Our training camp will include some of those itineraries and
on the first day we will arrive in Porto Cervo were Peter Sagan
won the first stage in the last edition.
He remained leader and won other 2 stages and secured his
success of the giro.
Our bootcamp is based on all this specialities and our base will
be an exclusive prestige Hotel in Costa Smeralda, the diamond
of Sardinia… where we will be in touch with good wine, nice
local food to enjoy all this after a beatiful ride.

The arrival is right in the heart of the Costa Smeralda, in the famous marina of
Porto Cervo just by the equally-famous plaza where the VIPs like to be seen.
Where Peter Sagan won in 2011 the 1st stage at Giro di Sardegna 2011. This
location allows us to make a race route even more beautiful and interesting
than usual: all the features which have made it famous are maintained (the
panoramic undulating route around the CostaSmeralda, the road by the sea at
Cannigione, maybe the chance to cross on the spiaggia delle Saline).
This is another beautiful up and down after we leave the hotel with a succession of short climbs and flat fast sections and follow the typical said flat
part of Sardinia… (actually you will see that there is not so much flat)… once
we reached Cabu Abbas, we will leave the inside part and ride on the coast
passing on Pittulongu and Golfo Aranci, another important port on the island
where the ships arrive… from there we leave to Marina di Porto Rotondo, this
is a more touristic little port with its cafes and squares where we’ll have a stop
and then, fully recharged , we will ride back on little climbs until we are back to
the Hotel for relax and enjoy the last day….
The stage is set in Gallura’s wind and rain carved rocks: some small climbs
but also long flat sections. This is a very beautiful and varied route for cyclists,
with perfect roads. After a taste of the gallurese’s inland, we head for the beaches and the sea views of the Bocche di Bonifacio in Corsica, until finishing

Just after the start there’s the brief climb at Abbiadori then you’ll ride the
whole Arzachena and then to Luogosanto (315 m.) From there we’ll continue
to Tempio Pausania where we will also nearly pass by the Monte Limber.
Then a road with a succession of short climbs and flat fast sections to Priatu
and to the suggestive Cala Volpe where the last 15km are on the coast back
to Baia Sardinia.
This is a beautiful mix of nature, coast rides in a certain wildness of the island
but you will remain surprised about the perfect roads.
After riding in the heart of the Gallura, we’ll go in the direction of Luras and
further to Nuchis, a particular little town; a beautiful road in the cork forest will
take us to Tempio Pausania (and then we’ll go to climb the Limbara with the
finish line at the summit at 1.300 m., near the TV-aerial). This is a real alpine
climb: 9 km of climbing; 33 hairpin bends; overall climbing of 800m and a
gradient almost always counted in double figures, beautiful climb. Who said
that in Sardinia there is no hills?!
We have chosen a really extraordinarily-beautiful route for this last day… . We
could not miss the chance to visit La Maddalena and all its arcipelago which
-since 1998- is recognised as Unesco world heritage site! We have seen
it on previous days from far… but being on the island and passing from La
Maddalena to Caprera, you’ll see that we are right: you will never see anything
like this anywhere else in the World! There will be a necessary transfer to reach
la Maddalena but once there we can have a nice turn around and, why not, a
coffee break.
