ong Kong's clubbers will have been
watching the rise of Dutch DJ and
producer Sander Kleinenberg closely
since he kicked up a storm supporting houseGod Armand Van Helden at the end of last
year, and not just because he's drop dead
gorgeous. The Voice caught up with him for a
quick chat.
Sander Kleinenberg has played at some of the
most famous clubs in the world. He's slayed
the crowds at Space in lbiza, Rex in Paris,
Ministry of Sound in London and the
incredible Ca{e D'Anvers in Antwerp" He's had
residencies at Asta in the Hague and, in what

little doubt that he's the hottest thing to hit the
dance scene since Sasha.

about the rest of Asia? "l've never played in
Born and raised in eastern Holland,
was there last year. lt was my first gig in Asia,
and I only played one record before the police
came and shut the place down. So I went
back to the hotel and got drunk."
Kleinenberg started DJing at school dances
way back when he was only 15, and later
progressed to creating his own tracks. Now
29, it has taken him quite some time to break
onto the international scene, "lt was about five
years ago when everything started to take off,
but it's only really been in the lasi year that
things have really got big," he explains. His
first serious taste of fame didn't come until
1999 with the release of the much hyped 'My
Lexicon', which was one ol the tracks thal

Last year's visit to Hong Kong was a huge
success. Does he plan to visit again soon?
Kleinenberg admits, "l'd really like to come
back lto Hong Kong] some time this year.

Verging on shy, this newlound stardom doesn't
seem to sit all that well with Kleinenberg.
"Stardom is a pretty big word," he says in a
puzzled voice. "lt takes quite a bit of
enthusiasm. I find the travelling a bit tiring but
once l'm behind the decks I'm alright. I like to
think of myself as being responsible for the
direction of a night. A tour guide if you willJ'
And what does he say to accusations that the
world's finest DJs might be superb at spinning
discs but can't dance for toffee? Can he
dance? "Absolutelyl' he states emphatically. "lf
you can't dance, then you're no good in bed."
Perhaps someone should mention that to a
few of the boys in Hong Kong.
