The Knightly Informer Volume 12 Number 10 June 2013 Principal's Message SAVE THE DATES 6/20 Report Card Pickup & De La Salle North Catholic High School June 2013 Registration for 2013-2014. Auditorium. 4:30-7pm. 6/24-6/28, 7/1-7/3 CIP TRAINING for new students. 7/1 Free and reduced lunch applications become available. 7/8-7/12, 7/15-7/19, 7/22-7/26, 7/29- When De La Salle North Catholic High School opened in September 2001, there were 11 staff, 14 jobs, and 75 students. This September 2013, 47 staff members will welcome the school’s largest class ever – the Class of 2017 with 105 students – and its largest student body – 345 students, all prepared and trained to work at over 85 local corporations. In the last four years alone, our student body has grown over 30%! With our beloved Class of 2013 graduating, our alumni now number 436 young women and men, many of whom have graduated from, or are still attending, colleges and universities throughout the United States. It’s a narrative of increasing grace and widening destinies. 8/2 SUMMER SCHOOL. 7/14-7/19 Lasallian Youth Leadership Conference. St. Mary’s University. 8/20 FRESHMAN RETREAT. Fireside Retreat Center, Corbett OR 8/26-8/30 CIP ORIENTATION 9/3 First Day of 2013-14 School Year 9/12-9/13 PICTURE DAYS Such growth is also a tremendous responsibility. To that end, this last year included an accreditation renewal through the Northwest Accreditation Commission. While the ink was still drying on that report, we initiated an agencywide Strategic Alignment Process – how do we ensure that Academics, CIP, Development, Admissions, Finance, and other facets of school are both aligned to and advancing the Lasallian mission? Over the summer and through next year, various school teams will complete projects aligned to goals to improve each aspect of our school’s operation. You entrust us with your children who every day come to us filled not only with hope and ambition, but also bearing the burdens and worries of contemporary teenagers. And every year, our teaching and CIP teams work with your children who ultimately advance a grade, improve themselves, keep their CIP job through summer, or graduate. And these young people go on to college, receive a degree, enter the work force, start families, and are now living out lives of service and love in their community. One can only bow to God’s grace and Providence at work in this very special school we all love so much. Enjoy a blessed, relaxing, restful and safe summer. The process of reading through each nomination has been enjoyable for our whole team. As the year wraps up, we would like to acknowledge these students for giving it their all at work. We are proud to announce our May Interns of the Month: Dilillai Rekemsik Gabriel Gutierrez Di’Jhena Thomas Jacob Fuqua US Forest Service Catholic Charities CASA BPA Freshman Sophomore Junior Senior Dillilai works at the US Forest Service in important data management role; she has helped us to capture legacy data that might otherwise be lost. This involves tedious scanning of data cards, slides, and photos. The work can be difficult but is always important. In particular, she recently helped us complete scanning of a critical forest inventory set of data sheets on a rush order. She did the work quickly and efficiently, without error. We look forward to her continuing with us in the future. Gabriel has been an integral part of the Catholic Charities organization. He is cheerful, reliable, focused, self-motivated and has been willing to assist wherever needed. His efforts helped us put together event materials, slide shows and files for our Celebration of Hope dinner. Gabriel is an independent worker and sees his work to completion in an exemplary manner. He takes pride in a job well done and is a pleasure to have in our department. We are grateful to have had his assistance this year! . Di’Jhena has such a great attitude and really livens up our workplace. Not only is she very hard-working but she is also a natural selfstarter. She works on filing, answering phones, inputting data into our database, typing, helping with our auction and really anything else we can find for her. She is always up for a new work challenge. Di'Jhena's coworkers have all noticed what a big heart she has and how kind she can be. We are so lucky to have her! Jacob has worked at BPA for two years. He has proven himself reliable, detail oriented, diligent, flexible, and he readily takes on new work assignments. His work is very important to our program, and includes compiling a media database of cultural resource reports and records, as well as labeling and filing over 400 site records for several hydro-electric projects. He is always willing to try something new and can change directions quickly. He gives his best with a positive attitude and completes his work with minimal supervision. Jacob has been a pleasure to work! We would also like to recognize all of the May nominees for their outstanding work! De La Salle North Catholic Idea Lab Scholars TO PURSUE HAPPINESS This summer, July 26-28, De La Salle North Catholic will participate in an exciting symposium for rising high school seniors. The gathering, dubbed Idea Lab, is being sponsored by Oregon Humanities, and aims to assemble 180 of the brightest students from Oregon's public and private high schools to address the topic of "The Pursuit of Happiness." Students will gather on the campus of the University of Portland to spend three days and two nights discussing the ways that happiness has been defined from philosophical, religious, historical, cultural, economic, and aesthetic points of view. The program is designed for students eager to engage in the intensive study and discussion of ideas, and aims to give a preview of the sort of intellectual life that students can expect in college and beyond. The symposium aims to be academically challenging (participants will be asked to prepare themselves with a set of readings on the topic before the meeting), but there will also be opportunities for fun and socialization during the session. It should be a great three days. This is the fourth year that De La Salle North Catholic will be participating. Please join me in congratulating the rising seniors who will be representing our school: Chi Kimmons, Olivia Kuntz, Monica Medrano, Nha Nguyen, Olesya Prokhorova, Harumi Sokau, Jessica Trinh, Nikolaus Tucker, Cody Walker, Zaire Wellmon. —Wendy Herrin, DLSNC English Department Chair and Idea Lab Teaching Fellow 12 Knightly Informer June 2013 Summer Reading at Multnomah County Library starts June 14th. Over the summer, students will be required to read at least one book from the following grade-level list and complete the accompanying assignment packet, although students are free to read as many books as they choose. Why? ● Enjoyment! Many people actually read books for this reason alone. ● We want to expose students to a variety of ideas, cultures, genres, authors, and characters. ● We want our students to start preparing for college! We are a college prep school and students need to be prepared for the increased amount of reading they will do in college. ● Research shows: (http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/ libdev/summer/research.htm) Notes from the Business Office Financial Aid 2013-2014 Mealtime Lunch Accounts If you still need help applying for financial aid, please call 503.285.9385 x139 to make an appointment with the business office and we’ll help you complete the form. If your student has a balance left on their cafeteria account at year end, it will be available to use when your student returns in the fall for the upcoming school year. Tuition Free/Reduced Lunch Applications for the 2013-2014 school year will be available July 1, 2013. In order to receive this benefit, you MUST complete a new application each year and in order for it to be in force on the first day of school, it needs to be received and processed by that date. We want to remind you that the first tuition invoice for the 2013-2014 school year will be sent to you mid July and is due on August 1st. Many families have found they like to pay this with an automatic monthly credit or debit card charge. If you would like to do this, please call/email Sandi at 503.285.9385 x139 or smottau@dlsnc.org and she will send you the form to complete so you can set this up for your convenience. We pray you all have a wonderful summer! We look forward to seeing you in September. —Jill Stanclift, Director of Finance June 2013 ● Knightly Informer Students who read over the summer do better in school in the fall. ● Students who do not read over the summer demonstrate academic loss in fall. ● Reading 5 books over the summer can prevent academic loss. Will this be graded? Yes. You need to fill out the assignment sheets to the best of your ability. There are separate assignments for each grade level. This will help your English teacher gauge your reading comprehension. Each teacher will also have his or her own way to facilitate additional discussions or assignments based on your readings once you return from break.
