ARTS, CULTURE & LIVING, PAGE 10A Sports Friday, October 31, 2014 Page One-A Knights Get The Point To Qualify For Tourney By DAN CROWLEY They needed one point and they got it. The Sandwich Blue Knight boys’ soccer team qualified for the MIAA Division 2 State Tournament yesterday with a 1-0 victory over visiting Falmouth. The MIAA will announce the pairings for the tournament today. The Knights (9-8-2) picked up the only goal they needed in the 38th minute of the opening half when Dylan DeBettencourt made an outstanding through pass leading the ball between the defenders and in front of Will Sturgis, who slipped it to the left of the Clipper keeper. The Sandwich defense came up big in the second half as they stopped a determined Falmouth attack. Matt Dahl led the backfield for the Knights making some key stops. Midway through the second Dahl cleared the ball on a scramble in front of the net. Andrew Galanek also came up big at the midway point breaking up a Falmouth play. Luke Bridges and Jacob Olsen made some second-half runs for SHS, with Bridges getting off a nice ball from the right side that nearly made it past the FHS keeper. Looking for a point, the Blue Knights came up short Wednesday, as they came away from a trip to Hingham with a 1-0 loss. The Harbormen, facing a similar situation, needed a point to reach the postseason. The Blue Knights came within a point of qualifying for the state tournament Monday when they picked up a 3-2 victory over Cardinal Spellman. Ben Diefendorf scored his first varsity goal in the opening half and Dahl and Brady Doherty added scores after the break to boost the Knights to a 3-2 victory. A trip to league rival Dennis-Yarmouth Saturday ended in a 2-0 defeat for the Knights. The Dolphins attacked the Sandwich net and controlled most of the play on the first half. Dahl, Galanek and Brennan Tickell fought off the D-Y attack, while up top Doherty and Max Wojnar had shots for the Knights. Olsen and Will Sturgis had chances later in the half, as did Zach Boudrow. The Dolphins got onto the scoreboard midway through the second on a goal from K.C. Sinha. Ten minutes later Tom Slovak made it a 2-0 game. The Knights put in three goals in each half Friday in a 6-0 romp over visiting Abington. Sturgis struck twice in the first half, with Olsen adding another as Sandwich pulled out to a 3-0 lead late in the half. Ryan Beaton made it a 4-0 match early in the second half and Dahl put the Knights up by five midway through the second. Wojnar topped off the scoring for Sandwich. Owen Caggiano and James O’Brien split time in net for the Knights. Field Hockey Advances In State Tournament By DAN CROWLEY The Lady Knights fought off a furious attack by 20th-seeded Medfield (7-7-5) yesterday, prevailing in the preliminary round of the MIAA Division 1 South Sectionals by a score of 1-0. It all came down to a penalty stroke with 17:20 left to play in the opening half as Nicole Martin drilled the ball into the Warrior net to give 13th-seeded Sandwich (11-34) the lead. The Knights advance to firstround play tomorrow, when they’ll travel to Somerset to face second-seeded Somerset-Berkley at 2 PM. Sandwich was awarded its first of 12 corner shots just 2:23 into the game with Sarah Condon finding Martin for a shot on goal. Anna Hurley made a nice kick save five minutes into the action, and Alicia Heyer got a ball on net for the Knights a minute later. Hurley made a second save, turning the ball back up field, where the Knights picked up the penalty stroke and took the lead. Shelly Alden and Condon crashed the Medfield net late in the opener, and Martin made a nice run down the left sideline. Medfield pushed hard in the final minutes of the half, but the stubborn Blue Knight defense fought them off. Medfield moved the ball very well in the second half with long passes and charged hard into the SHS defensive end. Kate Towey, Rachel Pentoney, Erin Condon, Ally Hir and Carly Whittle challenged the Warriors inside the 18-yard line and held them back. Martin continued to play strong on the left side, and Sammi Souke had a couple of runs down the right side. Sandwich threatened late in the second half as Souke, Alden, Sarah Condon and Martin worked the ball inside the 18, but they were unable to find a shot. Medfield had two corners late in the game, but the Knights broke them up. Martin, Towey and Hir spoiled a Warrior rally in the final minutes to seal the win. Knights’ Volleyball Opens Postseason Action By DAN CROWLEY The Lady Knights (12-5, 4-4 ACL) got a look at the top-ranked volleyball program in the state on Monday. Sandwich made the trip to Hingham to wrap up the regular season in a meeting with the undefeated (18-0) Notre Dame Cougars. The Knights fell short, 25-13, 25-18 and 25-16, but got a look at the type of competition they’ll see in the state tournament. Caroline Clabault and Tessa Wood each had five kills Monday. Carly Hokanson had 10 digs, Liz Siranosian had nine and Continued on Page 3A DAN CROWLEY/ENTERPRISE Sandwich’s Jacob Olsen fights for the ball on Saturday with a Dennis-Yarmouth player. Two Third-Quarter TDs Give MHS The Win DAN CROWLEY/ENTERPRISE Lexi Pace blocks the ball at the net in a recent Blue Knight volleyball match. By DAN CROWLEY The Knights fought off a furious attack by the Atlantic Coast League champion Marshfield Rams (6-1, 4-0 ACL) Friday night and held them to just six points through the opening half. But the second half proved decisive as MHS got hot and scored twice on the way to a 28-6 victory. The Knights punched one into the end zone in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run by Matt Hoadley, but the point after try failed. “Will Bennett had a good game catching the ball,” coach Bill O’Connell said. “He made a catch at the 1-yard line to set up Matt’s touchdown and he had a couple of other good catches. Dan (Perry) did a nice job passing the ball and running and Jake Carter had a few nice runs from the tailback position.” The MIAA announced the Division 3 Southeast playoff pairings for the next three games. The sixth-seeded Blue Knights (3-4) kick off the playoffs tonight at third-seeded Dighton-Rehoboth (5-2). The Falcons, who play in the South Coast Conference Large, defeated Fairhaven last week 38-12. Both of their losses came early in the season against non-conference opponent Somerset-Berkley (14-0) and SCC foe Apponequet (30-14). D-R has won their last four games. The Falcons have scored 177 points this season, for an average of just over 25 points per game, while surrendering just 63. Removing the two losses to much stronger opponents, the Falcons have given up just 19 points in their five victories this season for an average of just under three points per game. D-R is led by senior captain and three-season starting quarterback Nathan Kowalski. “We know that they’ll run a Wing T and that they are well coached,” O’Connell said of DR. “We drove the ball very well against Marshfield; our lines are playing well. We’re relying on our strength of schedule with the hope that it has prepared us for this game. We’re poised to pull off a win.” Friday night’s winner will move on to face the winner of the second-seeded Dartmouth (5-2) and seventh-seeded Nauset (2-5) game next week. Outside The Lines Tyler McMahon Sandwich High School senior Tyler McMahon has played football from the age of 8. He plays on the offensive and defensive lines, in the trenches where the work is tough and physical, and loves every minute. This season he is one of the captains for the Blue Knights. When not on the gridiron, he spends his time in the weight room, always working to be a better football player. He is a member of the National Honor Society at SHS and since his freshman year has been involved with Streetreach, a volunteer program in Hyannis that serves breakfast to the homeless. What kind of a season has the Blue Knight football team had so far? I would say the season so far has been successful. We stand at 3-4, but three of our losses have been to teams that are favorites to compete for the super bowl in their respective divisions. Our team has a lot of camaraderie, for most of us have been playing together ever since we were little. The strength of our team is without a doubt our experience. Our starting offense has 10 seniors, and the starting defense has seven. We have struggled all year with finishing games in the second half. In order to beat Dighton-Rehoboth, we are going to have to play hard all four quarters. Football has played a major role in your life. Do you have a football role model? My greatest mentor in football is definitely Bill Belichick. I admire his brilliance in the game of football, his position as a coach and as general manager, and the way he has set a standard for his team that is higher than any other team in the league. I have learned a lot about discipline from watching Bill Belichick, and that without it, you’ll never be successful. I not only love playing the game, I love studying it. Understanding why certain pass routes can pick apart different defensive zones, how pre-snap motions can tell a quarterback what a defense is playing, and all other intricacies of the sport have always been fascinating to me. Growing up supporting the greatest coach of all time is a large reason why I have this passion. How important have athletics been in your life and in what way has playing sports influenced who you are today? What I have learned the most in sports is that to achieve any type of success, you have to put forth time and effort. Most things in life aren’t handed to you, and football has taught me that in order to accomplish your goals, you have to put work into it. I have also learned about selflessness. That when you are in the final minutes of a game, you not only leave it all on the field for yourself, but for your teammates on the field as well. Most of the classes in high school are required, so engaging in extracurricular activities has been a great way to get the most out of high school. How fast have your high school years gone by? My four years at Sandwich High School have flown by. I remember vividly walking into the school and thinking it was a giant maze and that I’d never be able to navigate it. I have enjoyed my years of school here in Sandwich, but I am glad that I am a senior and can begin a new chapter in my life next year. The best advice I can give to freshmen is to set up a strong foundation this year. Get involved in sports and clubs and do as well as you can in your classes because the courses only get harder. Now that you are in high school, everything you do counts and will affect your future. What about your high school years stands out in your mind? What I will remember most about high school is being a part of the Continued on Page 2A 02/&%33)/.!, '5)$!.#%). !#()%6).' 9/52 0%23/.!,"%34 777#/-0!33!4(,%4)#3#/3PONSOREDBY Page Two-A The Sandwich Enterprise Friday, October 31, 2014 SHS Girls’ Soccer Team Earns Tie In Season Finale, Awaits Tourney Pairings By DAN CROWLEY The Sandwich girls’ soccer team wrapped up the regular season Wednesday afternoon with a nonleague match against a very good Dartmouth team. In what turned out to be a tune-up for the tournament for both squads, the Blue Knights and the Indians fought to a scoreless tie. “We are very evenly matched,” Sandwich coach Dave DeConto said after the game. “We’re both heading to the tournament.” Sandwich finished the regular season with a record of 11-3-3 and as undefeated Atlantic Coast League champions at 6-0-2. The MIAA will announce the pairings for the Division 2 South Sectionals today. After a first half Wednesday that went back and forth with both sides battling for position, the Knights came out in the second and took charge. But as hard as they pressed, the Dartmouth defense always had an answer. Sara MacFarland had a chance from low on the left side, an area from which she is often successful, but had the ball hit the outside of the post. Kay Stanton followed up McFarland’s bid a minute later with a shot from just inside the 18yard line that missed high. Sandwich kept up the secondhalf pressure as Becca Mandy went for the top corner of the net from 20 yards out but had the ball slip wide. Stef Briggs forced the Dartmouth keeper to make a stop with 12 minutes remaining with a nice sliding shot from about eight yards out in front. MacFarland had another chance inside the 10-minute mark and Rae LaRochelle drilled a hard shot that the Indians’ keeper smothered from outside the 18. Briggs and Mandy nearly connected on a nice cross from left to right, with Mandy’s shot blocked. Mandy then took a corner for the Knights and Caroline McKenna headed the ball, but it was just high. Briggs nearly tucked one into the left corner in the final minutes, but the Dartmouth keeper was ready and closed the gap. “I think we’re playing the way we want to right now with the tournament about to start,” DeConto said. “Kay (Stanton) and Becca (Mandy) had two nice chances in the second half and we got some low crosses from both sides. Bella (Collentro) and Becca played well in the middle and Rachel (Lake) and Liz (Wegman) did a nice job on defense. Olivia Horman came off the bench and also played well defensively, as did Julia Hanson and Hailee Steele. Colleen Macdonald did a nice job at right back moving forward and Hailey Whelan had a good game moving up and allowing the midfielders to move forward. Rae LaRochelle played physical and she does a lot of the set up for us up front. Caroline (McKenna) was everywhere, that’s just Caroline.” Entering the postseason McKenna leads the team with 11 goals and four assists. MacFarland has eight goals and an assist. “We’re 7-0-2 at home this year,” the coach said, “and I think we have a good chance to open the tourna- SHS Runners Perform Well At ACL Meet DAN CROWLEY/ENTERPRISE Sandwich’s Sara MacFarland races a Dartmouth player for the ball in Wednesday’s scoreless tie with the Indians. ment at home.” The first time the Blue Knights faced Silver Lake they lost 3-0. Monday the Knights evened the score with a 3-1 victory that knocked Silver Lake out of the state tournament. Whelan put SHS on the scoreboard in the opening half when she fired a shot from about 22 yards out that caught the Silver Lake keeper out of position. The Knights increased their lead to 2-0 just two minutes into the second half when McKenna made a perfect cross to Briggs in front of the net. Briggs put the perfect touch on the ball, deflecting it into the net. “That’s something we have worked on,” DeConto said. “It’s hard to defend against.” Silver Lake cut the lead in half eight minutes into the second half, OTLW: Tyler McMahon Canal Youth Hockey Squirt B The Canal Squirt B Sharks travelled to New Bedford to face Hingham on Saturday. Paige Hawkins set the tone in the first period with an unassisted goal. Hingham retaliated with 18 seconds left in the first period to tie the game 1-1. Harley Ellis sent the puck to Michael Itri for the second goal of the game ending the second period 2-1 in favor of the Sharks. The Sharks defense patrolled the blue lines, snapping up loose pucks and shutting down the opponent’s attempted breakaways in the second and third periods. Brendan Burke slipped the puck to Brady Wojciewchowski for the final goal of the game and a 3-1 win for the Sharks. Brendan Burke continues to be a powerhouse on the offensive line, scoring points in every game. He leads the team with 11 goals and three assists. The team played at Gallo Ice Arena on Sunday against a strong Hanover team. The Sharks were scoreless through three periods, ending the game with a 3-0 loss. Squirt B2 On Saturday morning the Canal Squirt B2 Sharks faced an aggressive Weymouth team on the road. After the first period, the Sharks found themselves trailing 2-0. The Sharks, after regrouping between periods, scored three goals in the second period. A goal by Matt Paling and two goals by Derek Gauvin, assisted by Matt Twomey, Luke Ferreira and Cameron Cook, changed the momentum of the game. Defensively the Sharks were very strong, led by Tyler Evans, Dylan McCabe, Shaemus Townsend and Zephyn Johnson, who played defense in the absence of Carson Spencer. In the third period, Sharks’ goalie Logan Perry made several outstanding saves. Devin Mahoney scored the game-winning goal on an assist by Tom Hurley for a 4-3 Sharks win. On Sunday morning, the start of the “Pink In The Rink” day at Gallo in support of breast cancer awareness, the Squirt B2 team, donning pink game shirts, played a feisty Plymouth Red team. Tyler Evans scored the first Sharks’ goal from the defensive position, but the Sharks found themselves trailing 2-1. The two teams exchanged goals in the second and third periods, which resulted in a 4-4 tie. Derek Gauvin (two goals) and Thomas Hurley also scored for the Sharks. Defensively the Sharks, led by goalie Logan Perry and defensemen Dylan McCabe, Zephyn Johnson and Shaemus Townsend, limited the scoring for Plymouth. Offensively, Devin Mahoney and Derek Gauvin were centering for Cameron Cook, Thomas Hurley, Luke Ferreira, Matt Paling and Matt Twomey, which led to numerous scoring opportunities. Squirt C The Squirt C Sharks picked up their second win of the season with a 5-2 victory over the Stars. Chris Rathbun got the team started with his second goal of the season, with an assist going to Casey Woodill. The Sharks extended the lead to two, with Johnny Meyer tallying his third goal of the season. The game was tied at two after two periods. The winning goal was scored by Nathan Paul, who skated free on a breakaway to beat the goalie for his eighth goal of the season. Casey Woodill ended the game with two goals in two minutes. They were his fifth and sixth of the season with assists going to Ryan Hanson and Ryan Cooney. The Sharks played well again, as most of the action was in the offensive end. The Sharks hope to keep the good play rolling tomorrow when they host Hingham at 7:40 AM at Gallo. but midway through the second McKenna lobbed a shot from about 24 yards out that sailed perfectly between the outstretched reach of the keeper and the underside of the top crossbar for a 3-1 Sandwich lead. “Rachel Lake played very well defensively against their speedy forwards,” the coach said, “and Bella (Collentro) and Becca (Mandy) owned the center of the midfield.” Continued from Page 1A DAN CROWLEY/ENTERPRISE Sawyer Ohman works the puck for the Cape Cod Canal Pee Wee B2 team in action last Saturday. Pee Wee A The Canal Sharks Pee Wee A team posted a 1-1 mark last weekend. On Saturday the Sharks were defeated by Pembroke, 7-1, at Gallo. The Sharks’ lone goal was scored by Caleb Richardson in the third period. Ted Dunn recorded the assist on the goal. Goalie Will Hanly made 12 saves for the Sharks. In the Sharks’ second game of the weekend, the squad earned its third win of the season with a 2-1 victory over the Coastal Stars at the Bog in Kingston. It was the team’s first road game of the season. Athlete Of The Week Mithran Denbow Sandwich High school sophomore Mithran Denbow finished in a tie for seventh on Monday at the MIAA Division 2 state golf tournament. Denbow, representing the Blue Knights, shot a round of 80 over the par 72 Glen Ellen Country Club in Millis. Denbow has been playing golf since age 6 and has played in NEPGA and US Challenge Cup events. “He has a stroke average of less than four over par per match,” Blue Knights’ coach Brent Pearsall said. “He finished the year as our number three and is extremely consistent. He’s just a great kid, a hard worker and will be our captain next year.” The Sharks got on the board first when Matt Glennon slid a low shot under the Stars’ goaltender just two minutes into the game. Richardson and Gavin MacKinnon each assisted on the goal. The Sharks increased their lead to 2-0 when Chris Gauvin went end to end and scored an unassisted, shorthanded goal with 10:22 left in the second period. Gauvin’s tally would prove to be the game winner. The Coastal Stars scored three minutes later and cut the Sharks’ lead in half. In the third period, the Coastal Stars pressured the Sharks, outshooting Canal, 12-3. However, Hanly stopped all 12 shots and preserved the win. He finished the game with 19 saves. With the win the team improved to 3-5. Bantam B The Bantam B Sharks posted their season high in goals on Saturday, cruising to a 9-3 win over the Coastal Stars while dominating at both ends of the ice. They closed the first period with a 4-2 lead on goals from Michael Bonito, Joe Hess (two) and Matt Sheehy. Max Hess, Sheehy, and Liam Center all picked up assists. The second period was all Sharks as they scored four more times including a shorthanded goal. Ethan Morse, Karsten Becker, Sheehy and Bonito all found the back of the net on assists by Becker, Max Hess, and Max Conley. With a commanding 82 lead, the Sharks scored one last time on a Conley wrist shot from the top of the circle. The Stars shortened the lead with 18 seconds left in the third period to close out the game. The Sharks, riding a two-game win-streak, face Duxbury Sunday at Bavis Rink in Rockland. football team. Going to the pasta dinners, getting the homecoming haircuts, bowling at the end of the year, and beating Mashpee on Thanksgiving last year are a few out of many memories from football that I will never forget. What are some of the qualities that you admire most in others? What I admire the most is when someone goes out of their way to be kind. It’s extremely easy to just socialize with your friends in high school, but people who will act kindly or converse with people they barely know are people that I try to emulate. I also admire students who work really hard at a sport or a subject that they might not be good at, because it’s really easy to not try when something isn’t just given to you. I believe you can get the most out of life by giving the most of yourself, and these traits certainly pertain to that philosophy. Who has been your inspiration? My greatest inspiration is without a doubt my brother Terry McMahon. Terry was born with disabilities and suffered a stroke when he was one. The challenges he faces every day exceed the ones I will ever have to face. He has taught me a lot about courageousness and bravery, how to make the best out of every situation, and how to be grateful even when things aren’t going my way. He is the strongest person I have ever met, and the type of man I strive be. Is there anyone to whom you would like to say thank you? I would like to thank my parents, who have always done whatever they could and succeeded in making my childhood as great as possible. They are who I have learned the most from, and the reason I am who I am today. Do you plan to attend college? I plan on attending college in Boston, but I am unsure on my field of study. Unlimited Team The Sandwich Pop Warner Bulldogs Unlimited Team finished the 2014 regular season by holding off the Norton Lancers in a 27-12 victory. This week’s win demonstrated the senior Bulldogs’ progression as the players took control of the game from the start and controlled most of the action throughout. Running back and safety Charlie Chapman directed his teammates throughout the contest, ensuring they were ready for each play call on both sides of the ball. The offense was led this week on the ground by Zachary Adams and Josh Kutcher, and Wesley Morse through the air. The defensive standouts were Kylan Rider, Sadie Hunt and Christian Gravina. The Bulldogs ended the regular season at 6-2 and are opening the playoffs this weekend against Mansfield. Bulldogs B Team The Bulldogs B Team ended the regular season with a record of 5-3, capped off by a big 21-0 win over Norton last weekend. The first half was a grueling defensive battle that brought both teams to halftime scoreless. The second half, as in the past, seems to be when this team shines. The Bulldogs came out and took the lead 6-0 in the third on a touchdown run by Trevor Nunes. He added another in the fourth. A 70-yard run by Aidan Washington put the Bulldogs up 21-0. A late interception by Tanner Davison kept the Norton team from putting any points on the board. Bulldogs D Team The conference champion Sandwich Bulldogs D team completed an undefeated season Sunday, downing Norton 14-0. The Bulldogs outscored their opponents 181-19 on the year. Defensively the Bulldogs surrendered two touchdowns all year long. This was a complete turnaround for the D team, as it had been winless the previous two years. Several members of the current D team experienced those years and continued to fight through the difficult times. They proved to be the backbone of the team and represented the Bulldogs as game captains on Sunday. The captains were Brady Campbell, Dillion Elliot, Trevor McHoul, Patrick Teravainan, Cole Hanson, Owen Hanson, Connor Coutinho, Tommy Lehman and Connor Gill. The Bulldogs offense got going as Teravainan scored a five-yard touchdown run on the Bulldogs’ first offensive drive. Quarterback Brady Campbell then hit Jack O’Malley in the rear of the end zone for the point after touchdown. The scoring was quiet until the second half when Norton attempted to push the ball down field on a pass. Tim Bengtson pulled the pass out of the air and turned on the afterburners for an 80-yard return for six points. Brady Campbell then added the point after by going around right end and running the ball into the end zone. The defense was unyielding with Connor Coutinho, Tommy Lehman and Cole Hanson controlling the line of scrimmage. Tervainan and Campbell made big plays from the linebacker spot. Tim Bengtson and Sean Landry controlled the outside with excellent tackling. The Bulldogs earned a first- round bye for the playoffs and will take on the winner of the Norton-Sharon contest at a site and time to be determined on Saturday, November 8. B Team Cheerleaders The cheerleaders for the Sandwich Pop Warner B team competed Saturday at the Hockomock League 2014 cheer competition. Placing second in their division, they will be progressing to the regional championships in Springfield, where they have a chance to qualify for the National Pop Warner competition. Team members Samantha Birch, Elizabeth Black, Ari Brennan, Payton Carroll, Emma Chapman, Kristina Dillon, Jessica Esdale, Samantha Pickrell, Molly Reiber, and Brigid and Faith Unwin have formed a tight, cohesive team unit all year. Playoffs The playoff schedule for the D, B and Unlimited teams will be posted on the Sandwich Pop Warner website, www.sandwichpopwarner.com. Sandwich is hosting an E Team Jamboree tomorrow, when the Bulldogs E Team will be play at 10:30 AM against Attleboro and again at 5 PM against Plymouth. The E team cheer squad will be conducting its routine during the halftime intermission of the 5 PM game. Volleyball Hosts Pembroke Continued from Page 1A Grace Tanguilig had eight. Abby Bates finished the night with 15 assists. Fifth-seeded Sandwich opens postseason play tonight when they will host 12th-seeded Pembroke (9-12) in the first round of the MIAA Division 2 South Sectionals at 6 PM. Entering the state tournament, Clabault leads the Knights with 107 kills over the regular season. Hokanson has been the most effective from the service line, dropping 48 aces on opponents. Wood leads the team in blocked shots (47), Tanguilig leads in digs (228) and serve receiving (252) and Bates leads the Knights in assists with 351.
