Annual Report - Homewood City Schools Foundation
Annual Report
2015
You Are Our
Most Important Partner
Did you know that HCS faculty and
staff contribute to the Foundation through
their employee-giving program? Last year,
employees contributed more than $13,000.00
to support our schools. We are so grateful!
If you are a teacher or staff member and
want to learn more, please email us at
info@homewoodcityschoolsfoundation.com.
EMPLOYEERAM
GIVING PROG
What a year we have had! Thanks to your generosity,
the Foundation has expanded its reach—providing
more classroom grants, more technology, and more
support for our teachers. This is possible because each
of you have committed your time and financial resources
to making our school system the best it can be.
Since 1994, the Foundation has been a part of this
amazing community, working with parents, teachers,
business leaders, and friends to ensure that all
Homewood students have the tools they need to be
successful in the classroom and beyond. You have
played a major role—increasing your donations by
35% in 2014-15—to make sure that teachers in our
system can dream big and bring exciting new concepts
into their classrooms. With your support, we are not just
providing funding for programs but partnering with
teachers and schools so that resources are having the
greatest impact.
More than 950 of you in the past eighteen months
have said yes to our schools with a financial contribution
to the Foundation. We can’t thank you enough. Our work
continues. We look forward to partnering with you again
this year to provide the best for our students and teachers.
They are counting on us.

Letter from
the Board President
I am grateful for the
opportunity to serve as
the President of the Board
of the Homewood City
Schools Foundation.
It is an extremely
exciting time in our
history. This past
year, you have shown
overwhelming
support for our two
annual fundraising
events – Homewood
Grown and Grateful
Dads. In 2014-15, these events generated more
than $90,000.00. Because of this success, the board
voted to add a second opportunity in the year for
teachers to apply for grants. This allows teachers to
implement programs during the full school term.
We hope this flexibility will lead to an increase in
grant applications and continue to bring more
innovative programs in the classroom.
We are so grateful for your support. It is
because of you that teachers can take an empty room
at Shades Cahaba Elementary and turn it into a
Makerspace where students can’t wait to walk in
and begin creating. It is because of you that students
in 7th and 8th grade science classes at Homewood
Middle School learn by doing with hands-on
experiments from frog dissection to motion detection.
We hope you will stay connected with the
Foundation and continue to support our efforts to
enhance and enrich the educational experience
for all Homewood students. Thank you for your
generosity.

Reading Programs
at Hall-Kent and Edgewood
Reading retention during the summer months is a key
issue for our elementary schools. Last summer, the
Foundation supported summer reading programs at
both Edgewood Elementary and Hall-Kent Elementary
to help alleviate the ‘summer slump’ that often occurs
when students are not in school. Funds were provided
by the Foundation for books and staffing during the
summer months. At-risk students gained critical
access to fiction and non-fiction materials; they kept
journals about what they read; and they returned to
school reading at similar levels to those that they
were achieving prior to the summer break.

IMAGINE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN if you gave a child
a creative space and filled it with tools and technologies
to create whatever their mind can conceive? That
freedom of expression and project-based learning
is what is happening everyday in Shades Cahaba
Elementary School’s new Makerspace thanks to a
grant from the Alabama Power Foundation and the
Homewood City Schools Foundation. Inside the colorful
space, students build, design, program and create.
There are robots, hand tools, circuit kits, a Lego Wall,
a 3D printer, and more, right at their fingertips.
“On any given day, you can see young coders,
mathematicians, scientists, and engineers at work,”
said Dr. John Lowry, Principal. “Fourth graders are
given Little Bits to explore the many ways you can build
circuits and power lights, temperature gauges, and
even fans. First graders are using Legos to design
and build famous American landmarks, learning
about shapes and developing spatial awareness.
As enthusiasm for our Makerspace grows, our teachers
will be able to use it as another way to challenge our
students to think about our world, explore our world,
and understand our world.”

On the last day of camp, they even participated
in a mock-competition to show them what a math
tournament is really like.
The Foundation was pleased to partner with the
math teachers as they increased the scope of this camp
from three to four days. With more than 40 students in
attendance, we know it will continue to be an enriching
experience for rising middle-school students.

NOT MANY PRE-TEENS want to come to school in the
summer to work math problems, but several rising
sixth graders were more than willing to participate in
the Math Team Camp hosted by teachers Amy Hacker,
Mary McLeod and Jordan Sterley. The idea was to
introduce higher-level math concepts that are essential
for math team success—before school even started and
students found themselves distracted with their new
middle school experience. During the camp, students
learned about proportions, percents and integers

HOMEWOOD CITY SCHOOLS FOUNDATION
MOST PEOPLE ASSUME that students interested in
Advanced-Placement classes wouldn’t need any
special help, but Assistant Principal Latta Johnson says
that’s not the case. “For some students school work
comes easy,” he says. “This sounds like a wonderful
trait—and it certainly is—but this sometimes prevents
students from developing disciplined study habits.
As classes get more rigorous and course loads become
heavier, students who have never had to work very
hard in class sometimes struggle with the new
challenges.” Giving these high-performing students
the opportunity to learn more about the demands
and rewards of an AP curriculum during the summer
between their freshman and sophomore years alleviates
their anxieties by reminding them that while these
classes take work, success is achievable. “The camp
gave first-time Advanced Placement students a chance
to learn to manage the increasing expectations of
advanced classes,” Johnson says. “Our own AP teachers
taught critical thinking, test-taking strategies, note
taking skills, critical reading, and stress management.
Students also had an opportunity to begin to look at
college admission and had a chance to speak to some
of Homewood’s former AP students.”

HOMEWOOD CITY SCHOOLS FOUNDATION
Homewood Grown
Thanks to your generous support, the Foundation
raised more than $75,000.00 at our annual community
dinner. During the night, Jeanne Jackson and Jay
Lester shared their experiences as a Homewood
mother and son and how our school system made
an impact on their lives. More than 500 people
enjoyed the evening with a wonderful dinner by
Café Dupont and music provided by Homewood
students. We also announced the 2015 winners of
the Teacher Impact Awards. Congratulations to
the following educators for all that they are doing
to impact our students:
• Theresa McKibben, Edgewood Elementary
• Jerome Isley, Hall-Kent Elementary
• Stefanie Fort, Shades Cahaba Elementary
• Steve Sills, Homewood Middle School
• Mindy McBride, Homewood High School
Grateful Dads
This new event was a hit thanks to the wonderful
support of our sponsors and donors. Held in
November at Good People Brewing Company,
Grateful Dads is a celebration of our community
with delicious food by
Little Donkey and musical
performances by several
Homewood Dads (and
a Homewood mom). In
its first year, we raised
more than $17,000.00 to
provide targeted grants
at each of our five
schools.
