annual report 2013 - Homewood City Schools Foundation
Every Student. Every School. Every Day. Homewood City Schools Foundation Build the Foundation. Be the Difference. Mission Statement The mission of the Homewood City Schools Foundation is to raise and allocate funds in order to create innovative educational opportunities and support existing programs in the schools; enhance the curriculum of the Homewood City Schools through private funds; encourage excellence in both teachers and students by supporting creative teaching and academic achievements; and to foster cultural enrichment by support of the arts and humanities within the schools. Letter From The President Dear Friends, It is an honor and privilege to serve our community through the Foundation. Reflecting back on the accomplishments of the year, it is through the dedication and commitment of our businesses, families and teachers, that we are able to report a banner year! In 2012, we hired a director to run daily operations, enhanced our website and marketing efforts, and provided over $75,000 in technology and curriculum enhancements for our schools. For those of you who supported us, we want to say thank you! One of our ongoing board goals is to see that every household in Homewood is aware of who we are as a Foundation. We are an organization of parents and community leaders working closely with our administrators to meet the needs of each school in our system and to fulfill the dreams of each teacher for his/her classroom. It is through the work of the Foundation that we, as community, can be instrumental in making a difference for our children. So, if you are not already plugged in to what we are doing, I encourage you to visit us online at www.homewoodcityschoolsfoundation.com or to “like” us on Facebook. It is a simple way to stay connected with how we are serving our schools and how you can be a part of the success. Your investment in the Foundation is an investment in the future of our children, our schools and our community. Sincerely, Ashley Condon Board President Homewood City Schools Foundation 2012-2013 Board of Directors Ashley Condon President Jill Kimbrell Vice President Jack Reamey Treasurer Sherrie Tarpley Secretary Jody Brant Carol Chesnutt Clara Creel Geoff Clever Sonya DiCarlo Leslie Doyle Wendy Ellison Kelli Gunnells Donna Johnson Julie Keith Dana Langford Mac Logue Jane-Marie Marlin Jay Murrill Donna Perreault Heather Reid Trey Schaefer Rachel Stone John Wallace Amy McRae, Director Homewood City Schools Foundation Build the Foundation. Be the Difference. 1 BUILDING SUPPORT, BUILDING CONNECTIONS Who We Are Strong schools build a strong community. But strong schools don’t just happen. No school system can provide every resource without support from its parents, its teachers and its businesses. That’s where the Foundation comes in. When you give, everyone benefits – our students, our teachers, and our community. Every Student. Every School. Every Day. Homewood is a great place to live, to work and to raise a family in large part because of the quality of the Homewood school system. As the sole fundraising entity for the entire system, the Homewood City Schools Foundation represents every student, family, faculty and staff member, as well as our neighbors and businesses that may not have a direct connection to the schools but thrive when our students succeed. The Homewood City Schools The Foundation supports every school, all Foundation represents every year long. student, family, faculty and staff member. 2 We ask for your support. Donate today and help us fund a Discover-E grant for a group of inspired teachers or purchase new technology for our classrooms. Together, we can make a difference! Homewood City Schools Foundation Build the Foundation. Be the Difference. Why Do You Give? Parent “We give to support the work of the Foundation because this is our home. Homewood schools have been instrumental in shaping the lives of our boys, and, the lives of so many young people that we love and care about.” Cassandra Joseph Staff “The payroll deduction is something I feel good about. As a parent, I know it serves my kids. As an employee, I know the Foundation makes my experience as a staff member more enriching.” Lori Renkl Instructional Assistant Homewood Middle School “I think the Foundation is synonymous with the word opportunity. It allows us to maximize student learning so that we can help each student reach their maximum learning potential.” DeShaundra Johnson Enrichment Teacher Shades Cahaba Elementary Business Leader “I think we as businesses and individuals need to do everything we can to keep [the schools great]. Our schools are what makes this community so special and successful; our system has so much to offer. Giving is just our way of saying thank you.” Joe Falconer Parent, Alum, Business Owner RealtySouth Homewood City Schools Foundation Build the Foundation. Be the Difference. 3 BUILDING MINDS, BUILDING DREAMS How We Help Your contributions are opening doors for students and teachers at all Homewood City Schools. Through your generosity, we awarded 11 Discover-E grants in 2012, provided new technology and continued programs that keep students reaching higher and dreaming bigger. Here are some of the ways your contributions made a difference. Testing, Testing... The Foundation helps prepare high school students for college by providing funding for Princeton Review courses for the PSAT. “With the help of the Foundation, the PSAT prep course is really making a difference in preparing students for the next level,” said Alison Glover Hill, College and Career Counselor at Homewood High School. “At least 50% of the students who take the course increase their test score by 10 points.” The PSAT is the only test students can take to qualify for a National Merit Scholarship. This year, Homewood High School has eight National Merit Finalists! Summer School Last summer, our art teachers received funding from a Discover-E grant that allowed each of them to take an online art education course of their choosing. Courses ranged from blogging to building creativity, from assessing art students to clutter-free teaching. In November, the group gathered for a professional development day and taught each other what they learned. “This grant has had a huge impact on my teaching,” said Celia Castle, art teacher at Edgewood Elementary. “It not only gave me fun and exciting ways to assess my students—which was the subject of my online course, but it gave all of us a framework for collaborating on how we teach art to our students and how we can use these types of courses to enhance our professional development.” 4 Homewood City Schools Foundation Build the Foundation. Be the Difference. App-solutely Fabulous Foundation-provided iPads have already made a big impact on learning. Last year, the Homewood City Schools Foundation provided iPads to a number of teachers in all five city schools, and instructors have quickly discovered myriad ways to implement tablet technology in their classrooms. Most importantly, they are seeing amazing results in the kids’ performance and attitude. Homewood teachers have used the tablets to: ➥ Assist in language translation ➥ Film special needs students working to improve their speech and gestures ➥ Inspire art students through doodling and puzzles ➥ Encourage young children to learn reading and math through interactive games ➥ Provide audio feedback on students’ writing ➥ Illustrate science concepts through animation ➥ Prepare students for the ACT ➥ Post assignments and information to classroom blogs Building New Pathways for Learning: Discover-E Grants Teachers are our greatest resource for innovative ideas and creative learning. Every year, the Foundation rewards this creativity through our Discover-E grants program. In the past three years, we have awarded over $98,000 to bring new programs and ideas into the classroom. When teachers dream big, it benefits everyone - our students, our schools and our community. Homewood City Schools Foundation Build the Foundation.
