Contributing to Society through Business www.molpower.com 90% Ocean transport is the most eco-friendly mode of international transportation as it can effectively reduce CO2 emissions by carrying larger volumes of cargo at one time. of the world’s energy, food and goods are carried by ocean transport, shipping plays a vital role in global economic development. More than 8,000 dwt Comparison of CO2 emissions from aircraft, trucks and vessels (unit: grams/ton-km) The MOL Group has been contributing to society at all stages of transport for more than 130 years. It carries not only cargoes but also wishes of the people involved and supports the lives of people around the world. MOL Liner, as part of the value chain of the MOL Group , contributes to society by transporting everyday goods and other commodities safely and reliably to all destinations in the world. This supports our goal to help people enjoy an improved quality of life as well as to bring happiness to each person. 15 50 Source: ICS & NTM, Sweden 540 *Ton-km is a measure derived from multiplying transport tonnage and transport distance. One ton of cargo transported for one kilometer equals one ton-km. Environmental Protection through Technological Advancements Alternative Maritime Power (Onshore power supplies while at berth) i NOx, SOx, soot and smoke, and other pollutants while at berth Real time monitoring system Eco Sailing Bulbous bow modification Bulbous bow can help reduce CO2 emissions by reducing the vessel’s wave-breaking resistance. With the implementation of “Eco Sailing,” the bulb is modified to a new finer-shaped bulb for performance optimization over the adjusted ship speeds. Propeller Boss Cap Fins h 4% to 5% fuel efficiency Inverter-controlled seawater pump A seawater cooling pump is used to cool down the heat generated during engine operation by using seawater. However, the conventional pump runs at the same speed regardless of the seawater temperature. With the inverter- controlled seawater pump, the power consumption can be optimized by controlling the speed of the pump. Ballast water treatment system Biodiversity Protection Low-friction hull paint h more than 3% energy conservation Electronically controlled engine Reduce NOx, soot and smoke by more effectively controlling the intake and exhaust valves. Results are brought to MOL Liner management attention with recommendation for countermeasures or remedial actions. Did you know? Compliance and anti-trust training in Hong Kong EDUCATION AND TRAINING We understand audits and follow-up action plans alone are not enough. Central to our efforts on governance is the need to instill and entrench a compliance-oriented mind-set with every employee. MOL regularly conducts e-learning and in-house training programs covering topics related to ethics and compliance, including anti-trust policy. RISK MANAGEMENT Given the global scale of our businesses, MOL realizes that the nature, scope and potential impact of our key business and strategic risks are subject to constant change. Jayadi Panjiwijaya Global Auditor, MOL Liner Ltd. Safe Operation www.molpower.com Safe operation is of the utmost importance and lies at the heart of MOL’s management. MOL Liner takes an integrated and comprehensive approach across all aspects of our Liner business to prevent serious marine incidents and achieve the goal of Four Zeroes (an unblemished record in terms of serious marine incidents, oil pollution, fatal accidents and heavy cargo damage). Today’s demand for significant greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions from the shipping industry calls for revolutionary environmental measures. MOL seeks to offer more environmentally-friendly services through various green innovation strategies for bluer oceans, a cleaner environment and a sustainable future. System to Promote Environmental Management MOL operates two unique environmental management systems to promote the MOL Group’s environmental activities: • MOL EMS21 • MOL Group Environmental Target System Eco Sailing MOL Liner Exclusive Task Team Data alone cannot determine the best routing. Further analysis and evaluation is needed. MOL Liner has a highly experienced exclusive task team called “Fuel Oil Management Special Task Team” with broad knowledge and expertise in ship navigation to advise and evaluate the routing. Greater Transparency in Information MOL Liner discloses its environmental performance to the public via CountOnMOL.com Emission Reductions – Our Approach MOL is a leader in developing innovative vessel efficiency technologies to reduce environmental burdens. MOL tackles global warming through the control of operations. How to select the optimum routes? The best route does not necessarily mean the shortest path. There are many more factors we need to consider like weather, wind, waves, currents and ship characteristics when selecting the optimum route. Thus, selecting the optimum route is an act of sophisticated science to find the best balance to minimize time of transit and fuel consumption without placing the vessel at risk of cargo damage or crew injury. Did you know? MOL practices “Eco Sailing” to save fuel and reduce environmental impact. We rigorously apply the principles of “Eco Sailing” whenever we operate vessels. • Decelerate to the most economical navigation speeds • Select optimum routes • Reduce vessels’ wetted surfaces • Optimize operation and maintenance of main engines, auxiliary equipment and other machinery Impact of adverse weather conditions on fuel efficiency How do adverse weather conditions drive down fuel efficiency? When a vessel passes through rough sea, it would be slowed down to fight against strong winds or waves either voluntarily or involuntarily. The vessel would need to burn extra fuel and drive down fuel efficiency. Thus, MOL Liner has a set of sophisticated systems to closely monitor the real-time movements of all vessels under MOL operation and to keep a watch on weather conditions to avoid bad weather. Weather / Optimum Ship Routing • Operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year • Helps identify the bad weather areas Real Time Monitoring System Provides real time vessel performance in terms of speed, fuel consumption and CO2 emission. Toru Nagai Vice President of Fuel Oil Management Special Task Team Ship master checks the real time data using the real time monitoring system Environmental Measures www.molpower.com Other Environmental Efforts Reducing emissions at sea is only one part of our effort. MOL Liner takes a holistic approach to ensure our environment protection policy widely covers the entire value chain. In Terminal Solar power generation system In 2007, MOL Liner pioneered a large-scale solar power generation system at the Tokyo container terminal in Japan to reduce electricity emissions. • 1,200 solar panels • 20% of power for the office In Office The world consumes 1 million tons of paper every day and forests are cut down faster than they can grow. MOL Liner minimized paper consumption through technological advancement. Using onshore power supplies while at berth Emissions of NOx, SOx, soot and smoke, and other pollutants can be significantly reduced while at berth by reducing the use of conventional diesel power generators and receiving electric power supply from onshore instead. Promoting paperless business transactions MOL Liner has simplified its eCommerce shipping tools with the expanded use of online tools to process bookings to respond more quickly to customer inquiries and minimize paper usage. Promoting paperless operations In the United States, MOL Liner has adopted a web-based new hire orientation process and web-based job applicant tracking system, which reduces paper usage. A Tiny Box can have a Big Impact to the Environment Containers also have a significant impact on the environment. In particular, for refrigerated containers, some of the bunker fuel is consumed to maintain the optimum cargo temperature during transportation. MOL Liner considers the following factors for equipment selection: • Energy consumption • Performance reliability • Robustness to all-weather operation environment • Ease of maintenance and repair • Adaptability to new technical features Special features for MOL refrigerated containers which help achieve an average of 21% less energy consumed than industry averages: • MOL reefer equipment meets and exceeds all international standards • Younger fleet than industry average with advanced energy efficient design • Pioneer adoption of direct current (DC) inverter technology which enables precise temperature control with lower power consumption Preserve the Home of Alligators The alligator is the mascot of MOL Liner – but did you know there are some real alligators living at our 158-acre TraPac Jacksonville (United States) container terminal in freshwater wetland areas? MOL Liner is obliged and committed in accordance with laws and in respect of nature to preserve and protect the home of these alligators. We manage and maintain the freshwater wetlands including the retention ponds. The alligators are living happily in our terminal!
