These three days are geared to enhance speedy jet-lag recovery. Day 1 - Friday October 3 You will be met by Luisa and helped to settle into your accommodation. Day 2 - Saturday October 4 Enjoy a free morning before meeting with the other students. Day 3 - Sunday October 5 A take-it-easy, relaxing day, exploring our new neighborhood. Day 4 - Monday October 6 9.30-12.30 VIS Morning Language Lesson 16.00-18.00: Guided tour: The History of Venice The best introduction to the city: a professional guide will take students through some of the most important spots of Venetian history. Departing from the political heart of the city in the Piazza San Marco, students will then be taken to more remote and off the beaten track places, finishing at the commercial hub: the Rialto. Our guide will provide explanation on the origins, developments and fall of the Venetian Republic. Prepare to be amazed! Day 5 - Tuesday October7 9.30 – 12.30 VIS Morning Language Class 16.00 - 18.00 Preparation for interviewing local artisans – over the weekend and the second week, students will carry out “learning interviews” with local Venetian artisans. Venice With Luisa has organized textile workers, fishermen, wine-maker, needle-crafters, mask decorators, visual artist, fruit-vendor, and other residents of the islands who are pleased to share aspects of their working lives in this amazing city. Day 6 - Wednesday October 8 9.30-12.30 VIS Morning Language Class PM: Interviews with local artisans ; grammar tuition with Luisa (optional) Day 7- Thursday October 9 9.30-12.30 VIS Morning Language Class , at the Rialto Markets Lesson based on food vocabulary and first-hand practice. The students will move from the classroom to the famous, typical and colourful Venetian markets of Rialto. In groups,with specific tasks we will move around the stalls, talking to locals, and organising an Italian menu. (Teachers will accompany the groups). 18.30 Venetian Cooking Class Set in an historic palazzo a cooking demonstration by a nationally-renowned chef will delight you. Following, a light meal , set in the palazzo`s formal dining room, will be a truly sensory experience . Day 8 - Friday October 10 9.30-12.30 VIS Morning Language Class 17.00 Cheeses of Italy Workshop Students will be accompanied to the historic bottega “Casa Del Parmigiano” at Rialto. You will be introduced to Italian cheeses, and to their traditions. Sampling of cheeses and sipping vino buono is a truly satisfying way of ending a busy day, vero! Day 9- Saturday October 11 Lido and Pellestrina Day A very interesting day! Using public transport : vaporetto, bus, ferry…we will make our way to one of the peaceful villages on the island of Pellestrina, to see fishermen tending their boats, and sorting through their clumps of mussels that are being cultivated. A muddy business indeed! Optional is a fisherman`s lunch in a local osteria. — October 2 014 Day 10: Sunday October 12 Laguna Outing to Torcello , Mazzorbo ,Burano Weather permitting we pack a lunch and set off to explore the grassy island of Torcello, once the capital of the entire lagoon. On return we stop at Mazzorbo, in days gone by a popular resort for Venetian nobility, and celebrated for its orchards and vineyards. A small wooden bridge connects it to Burano, where we will wander the colourful streets and watch the evening`s activities…maybe even sharing an aperitivo at sunset. Sunset at Burano is a photographer`s delight. Day 11: Monday October 13 9.30 – 12.30 VIS Morning Language Class Free Afternoon Activities to suit the individual interests of the students can be suggested. Day 12: Tuesday October 14 9.30-12.30 – VIS Morning Language Class 16.30 Gondola Rowing in Venice Lagoon Icing on the cake, really! You will be accompanied to a prestigious local rowing club where, after a short introduction to Venetian rowing by a the club`s manager, you will be going out into the lagoon in a “gondolone”, a large gondola. Once reached a calm part of the lagoon you will be invited to have a practice rowing. Two professional rowers will be there to encourage you. You’ll love it! Day 13: Wednesday October15 9.30-12.30 VIS Morning Language Class PM: Interviews with locals; grammar tutoring with Luisa (optional) Day 14: Thursday October 16 9.30-12.30 VIS Morning Language Class 15.00 – 18.00 Excursion to Monastery We will travel to the tiny island with its oriental “onion” bell-tower where the residing Armenian monks open their monastery to visitors wishing to absorb the atmosphere that fascinated Lord Byron (who stayed there several times). We will take a tour through the rooms to view a most impressive collection of manuscripts and miniatures, while listening to the amazing history of this little island which began as a leper colony. Day 15: Friday October 17 9.30 – 12.30 VIS Morning Language Class 18.00 – 20.00 Tour of the Ghetto with Professional Guide Have you ever wondered where the word “ghetto” comes from? …where the first banking negotiations took place? A professional guide will bring to life the answers to these questions, and more. Fascinating! 20.00 - 21.30 Cicchetti and aperitivi sampling at 2 popular Venetian bars. Join Venetian city folk and sample cicchetti and aperitivi at 2 very, very popular bars. We will sit on the boardwalk, glass in hand, and absorb the Venetian evening atmosphere. Day 16: Saturday October 18 Free time for last minute “savouring” and to visit this glorious and memorable city of Venice.
