21st Century Learning - Trinity Catholic High School
2 0 1 4 – 2 0 15 Annual R epo r t Trinity Catho lic H ig h Sc h ool 21st Century Learning Mission Statement Trinity Catholic High School is a Roman Catholic, coeducational, college preparatory school under the direction of the Diocese of Bridgeport. Trinity Catholic High School is a Christ-centered community committed to educating the whole person within the Roman Catholic tradition. It provides an atmosphere of respect and reverence in which each member is able to develop spiritually, morally, intellectually, socially, and physically in order to live as a positive Christian witness and responsible citizen in the service of God and others. Faith • Family • Football Letter from Our Principal Letter from Our Principal Dear Alumni, Parents & Friends: I am honored at having been selected as the next principal and enthusiastic at the prospect of working with you to continue the growth of Trinity Catholic High School. In my short time here, I have already come to understand the great love so many people have for Catholic High. Let me share my initial perceptions and a few thoughts about our school’s future direction. I am deeply impressed by the dedication of so many individuals to Catholic High’s mission. Over my four decades in Catholic high schools as a teacher and administrator, I have worked with many loyal alumni/ae and parents at many schools. But I will confess to being surprised - and grateful! - at the depth of commitment I have witnessed here. The intergenerational loyalty of so many alumni/ae and their families is impressive. More than 10% of our students are the second generation from their families to have attended Catholic High. And being located in a great neighborhood in a great city, Catholic High is positioned well for growth going forward. One of our top priorities is increasing enrollment, and I am confident that with a renewed focus on academics, including 21st-century learning through the 1:1 technology program described elsewhere in this issue and a new high-profile Honors program for incoming freshmen, we will attract increasing numbers of students. Yet like all Catholic schools, Catholic High also faces some challenges. Our facility is aging. This summer we accelerated our roof replacement project to complete Phases Three and Four of a five-year plan. We replaced our telephone system and, of course, advancing technology requires continuing updates. Most of these improvements to our infrastructure, while costly, are not immediately visible to visitors. Maybe that’s why the most frequent comment I hear from returning alumni/ae is “The place hasn’t changed!” We can be proud when that comment refers to our fidelity to our Catholic identity, or to maintaining the reputation for academic excellence our graduates have established. Unfortunately it too often refers to our facility. And that’s one of the reasons I’m excited about our new field initiative. The new turf field will provide our student-athletes with a premium athletic complex and will also benefit our recruitment effort. More details on the progress of the ENVISION Campaign can be found elsewhere in this publication. Meanwhile, we are expanding the Advisory Board so that our school has partners with the expertise we need to guide the future direction of our school - both to assess all aspects of our educational program and to ensure we have the resources in place to provide our students the best possible education. Three new committees, Marketing, Education/Programs and Advancement, will join the Facilities, Field and Finance Committees already established. I look forward to sharing more information about our school’s progress as the year unfolds. In the meantime, I ask that you keep all of us in the Trinity Catholic High School community in your prayers and assure you that you will be in ours. Joseph Gerics Ed.D. Principal 2014-–2015 Advisory Board Letter Advisory Board Members Advisory Board Chair Chairman Roger Fox P’96,’00,’04 Vice Chairman Betsy Mercede ‘68, P’00,’03 Secretary Barbara Zichichi P’15 Bishop’s Representative Rev. Msgr. William J. Scheyd, P.A. Principal Mark W. Karagus, EdD Assistant Principal, Student Affairs Every year when I attend graduation I am reminded of the importance of the work done every day by our faculty, staff and administration and the support we receive from you, our Catholic High community. Exciting highlights for the 2015-2016 year: the continuation of our iPad initiative, the completion of our new roof and the beginning of construction on our new athletic complex. As always, we need help from our alumni and friends to support our Annual Fund. This year the Annual Fund retained 82% of the 2013-2014 Annual Fund donors. This is an amazing number considering the national average is 67%. This year we saw 159 more Annual Fund donors and our Annual Fund total increased 25.89% over last year bringing in $191,461. Without your help it would not be possible to educate the 435 students that we welcomed in September. Diane Warzoha I hope that sometime during the year you are able to visit Trinity so you can witness for yourself our efforts to become the best high school in our area. Utilizing the iPad as a vehicle for 21st century teaching and learning is a newly established benchmark that is being adopted within the Diocese of Bridgeport, because it increases student engagement and motivation, enhances academic performance, and fosters instructional flexibility and resource efficiency. While innumerable benefits to multimodal teaching and learning have been recognized by educational facilities worldwide, Trinity Catholic High School prides itself on selecting a technologically advanced platform that not only bolsters academic achievement, but also enables students to further develop in the ways that support our school’s mission. Spiritual, moral, intellectual, and social development fueled by a cognizant faculty, a euphoric student body, and an embracing community will steer the Crusaders to success as iPad education emerges on our campus during the 2015-2016 school year. Social interaction, spiritual stimulation, and academic excellence are all opportunities presented to students through Trinity Catholic High School’s tight knit community. As we jump further into a 21st century style of learning these prospects are broadened. Through the intertwining of synchronous and asynchronous learning, students will be better equipped for the technological changes that have swept throughout higher education and the modern workforce. Enhancing students’ resourcefulness, while inciting interaction and connectivity with peers, teachers, and texts, will ultimately broaden the academic prospects within the Trinity Catholic High School community. This will afford teachers a means for facilitating discussions, lessons and assessments rooted in real world practical experiences. Pairing the educational and technological modality of use of the iPad with the ingenuity of our faculty, staff, and students creates an environment for substantive and creative educational opportunities. As students translate proficiencies and confidences gained in the classroom to their community outreach, service, and career endeavors, the impact of technologically enhanced education in this community will be undeniably remarkable. Mission Trip Christina Ferreira ‘16 Trinity Catholic High School takes on a mission trip. If that simple sentence does not describe the Crusaders sufficiently, who knows what would. The Crusaders succeeded in reaching the amount of applicants due to the motivation, compassion, acceptance, and spiritual leadership of none other than Father Sam. Not knowing what to expect when climbing onto the coach bus that was packed with sleeping bags, fans, extra socks, and more snacks than the average Walmart sells, the students, Ms. Forlenzo, Mrs. Egan, Ms. Branca, Father Sam, and even two seminarians, Dan and David, did not fail to have a smile breaking through their nervousness for the journey ahead. Upon arrival, kids from all different parishes across the nation greeted the Crusaders, giving them a sense of what college will be like; a fresh start with people from all over. When most hear the phrase “mission trip,” community service comes to mind, which is an accurate mindset. However, Catholic Heart Workcamp provided so much more. Some rekindled their love with God while some made unexpected friendships. Maybe it was the little water and sleeping on air mattresses in a classroom that created a bond, but any Crusader can agree that being able to automatically befriend someone without judgment is definitely a Trinity Catholic High School characteristic. The mission trip has yet to grow to its full potential but its past attendees are adamant in keeping it alive. This phrase regarding mission trips in general is overused, but it truly was a life-changing experience. Community service may feed those in need, but it also feeds the soul of the giver. Mission Trip 2015 Mission Trip 2015 Envision Campaign The goals of the Envision Campaign for the short and long-term future of the Trinity Catholic High School are to: • • • • Promote the school’s Catholic identity and values Ensure a premium 21st century educational experience Update and enhance campus and infrastructure Ensure the school’s financial stability Why a new sports complex A new sports complex means many things to Trinity Catholic High School and its athletes, present and future. We groom our athletes to compete at the next level where they will play on a turf field. Also, a turf field proves to be more durable, has fewer maintenance costs and provides a safer surface with fewer injuries to the athletes. Repositioning the field will allow the baseball and softball fields to be utilized without having to remove goal posts from the outfield. More Trinity Catholic High School sports will be able to play and practice simultaneously. Besides saving money on rental of off-site fields, this will permit the lacrosse team to play home games for the first time. Field lighting for evening games and events will also increase time available for practices and competition. The field can be used throughout the year and without concern for weather conditions. The importance of athletics to the trinity experience Nearly 80% of all our students participate in one or more competitive athletic activities. Sports and physical education are an integral part of the school’s educational program. Interscholastic competition provides students with physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual experiences that benefit not only the individual, but the school and total community as well. Participants not only become physically fit but also develop self-discipline, loyalty and commitment to a cause greater than themselves. The all-purpose turf field will be used by all students and will help accommodate the needs and expectations of our 21st century school. Where we stand Construction has begun! We are moving forward, but we still have work to do! Fundraising in ongoing to close the gap and secure a minimum of an additional $750,000 to reach a $3 million goal. The amount raised will determine the scope of the finished project. Your partnership advances the mission Trinity Catholic High School needs your help to achieve this goal! This project will be funded through designated gifts above and beyond the Annual Fund. Show your Crusader Spirit and Pride and contribute to making this project a reality. Commitments can be made over a three to five year period. Prestigious naming opportunities exist. Together…Let’s Envision…and Achieve it! *Contribution details for Phase 2 of the Campaign, which includes enhancements to the Library and the Auditorium will commence in 2016. Contact Kim Maloney, Director of Advancement at 203.322.3401 or kmaloney@trinitycatholic.org for information or to make a gift. Envision Campaign Dr. Joseph Gerics, Principal, and the school’s Advisory Board are supported by many in making this goal a reality including: Bishop Frank Caggiano Advancement Office Kim Harris Maloney ’85 P’15,’19 Betsy Mercede ’68 P’00,’03 Field Committee Jim Daine P’16,’17 Bryan Fox ’94 Roger Fox P’94,’96,’00 Anthony Gaglio P’06,’08,’11 Steve Green P’12,’16 Mike Macari P’00,’02,’06,’09,’13 Sheila Mara P’05,’07,’09 Frank Mercede ’68 P’00,’00,’03,’15 Red O’Leary ’74 P’03,’04,’06,’08,’10,’13 Tony Pavia ’72 John Romano ’79 P’08,’12 Bob Robustelli ’70 P’12 Paul Tusch P’09,’11,’14 Phase 1 Jubilee of Sport 14/15 Sports Team Captians On the chilly morning of April 24, 2015 Bishop Frank J. Caggiano presided over a groundbreaking ceremony, as construction of a new sports field at Trinity Catholic High School will commence this fall. This symbolic groundbreaking follows three years of planning and is part of the school’s multi-year ENVISION Campaign to upgrade and renovate its facilities and provide the latest educational technology. “This venture is important to making it possible for Trinity Catholic High School to better serve our school community”, said Dr. Joseph Gerics, Principal. “This Envision Campaign is building on the school’s tradition of preparing young men and women to achieve their highest potential in all facets of life.” The $3 million dollar campaign is the largest since the school’s opening in 1958. Phase 1 of the campaign was approved by the Zoning Board of the City of Stamford last fall, and will include a complete refurbishing of the rear-of-school field campus to include a brand-new, multi-purpose, turf field for varsity and JV football, boys’ and girls’ soccer, lacrosse, and girls’ field hockey. To date, generous donations have been made by dozens of alumni, parents and corporations towards the Phase 1 goal of $3 million. With the support of the Diocese of Bridgeport, additional phases of the campaign to renew, rebuild and revitalize Trinity Catholic High School will commence upon the completion of Phase 1 and will include a new media center and auditorium upgrades, plant improvements and renovation of the baseball and softball fields. “The new sports complex is one part of an overall strategic plan for Trinity Catholic High School. It began with a needs assessment to identify initiatives that will move the high school forward. Our goal is to offer the highest level of contemporary educational services in a faith-based environment, as well as accommodate an anticipated growth in its student population over the next two decades,” said Sister Mary Grace Walsh, ASCJ, Ph.D., Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese. “As the only diocesan high school in this area of Fairfield County, it is important to the diocese that Trinity Catholic has a strong and bright future.” 2014-–2015 Administration & Staff Members of the Class of 2015 Principal Mark Karagus, EdD Assistant Principal, Student Affairs Diane Warzoha Assistant Principal, Academics Annamarie Wellington Spiritual Director Rev. Food was delivered to The Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County, Inc. and cereal was donated to St Joseph’s Parenting Center of Stamford. Blood Drive(s) A long-standing tradition each year, the Senior Class sponsors a fall and spring blood drive for the American Red Cross as their class service project. In addition to raising awareness for the need for blood donations, over 33 useable pints in the fall and 31 useable pints in the spring were collected. Chairperson Lindsey McMahon and all the seniors who worked on this service project did an excellent job of carrying on this Senior Class tradition. Toy Drive Thank you to those members of our Crusader family who helped share the Spirit of Christmas by donating Toys to our Annual Toy Drive. We fulfilled 35 Wish Cards for specific children and collected an additional 300 toys for the general Inspirica Toy Drive. March for Life On Thursday, January 22, eighteen students and five chaperones travelled to Washington, D.C. to participate in the 2015 March for Life. The trip began with the Life is Very Good rally and a Mass celebrated at the Patriot Center of George Mason University followed by the March from the Washington Monument up past the Capitol and concluded at the congressional offices. The March for Life is a peaceful demonstration to share the truth concerning the greatest human rights violation of our time, legalized abortion on demand. Pink Week The National Honor Society sponsored Breast Cancer Awareness Week, raising money through bake sales and a collection of spare change each lunch period. During Pink Week, Stamford health care professionals, Elaine Morganelli M.D., Jennifer Bishop M.D. and Liz Manfredo M.S., RD Administrator, Cancer Services, spoke with the senior girls about breast care and the importance of self-examination. Craig Tifford M.D. and Dominique Srdanovic, GU Nurse Navigator, spoke with the senior boys about testicular cancer. Pink Week ended with the “Going Pink” rally when students were given facts, information and statistics about breast cancer. Mrs. Warzoha, Assistant Principal, spoke to the students as a breast cancer survivor. On behalf of all cancer patients, she offered her thanks for the way we raise both funds and awareness. The Trinity Catholic community donated nearly $2000 to the Bennett Cancer Center at Stamford Hospital. Pay it Forward – Help the Homeless Sophomore Backpack Project March 2015... There is tremendous power and positive energy in giving. Each year the sophomores at Trinity Catholic High School take part in “Paying it Forward.” It is a concept of selfless giving and a way to unite people all over the world, allowing us to experience the true power of giving and making a positive difference. As we all know the winters in CT are brutal. We can’t imagine how hard it would be to live out on the streets in this extreme weather. Our goal was to encourage everyone to embrace the incredible power of giving by helping us create care packages to deliver to various emergency homeless shelters in CT. Planning for Tomorrow • Ways to Give Gifts of Cash Gifts may be in the form of cash, check, credit card, debit card, pledge and on-line donations to our website: www.trinitycatholic.org. Trinity Catholic’s major sources of income are tuition, fees and philanthropic support. Matching Gifts Many companies match contributions their employees make to a non-profit. When making your gift, request a matching gift form from your company and forward to the Advancement Office at TCHS. We give full credit to the donor for any gift they make -as well as any match their employer gives. • Tuition and fees do not cover the entire cost to educate a student. The Annual Fund, other fundraising efforts and earned income make up the difference. • Giving to the Annual Fund is the best way for alumni, parents, parents of alumni and friends to make a difference in the future of Trinity Catholic - it’s the financial lifeblood of the school. • Can’t write a check for your total donation at one time? Installment giving allows you to maximize your gift by scheduling your contribution over the course of the school year - July 1st through June 30th. • • Bequests Bequests are gifts made through one’s will and may be in the form of cash, property or a portion of one’s estate. Life Income Gifts A life income gift, such as a charitable remainder trust or annuity trust, is an ideal way to make a substantial gift to the school. Deferred gifts such as these have significant tax advantages and can increase your income while benefiting Trinity Catholic High School at the same time. Gift societies provide an opportunity for all donors to be recognized and acknowledged at the level of their generosity. For the Annual Fund to be successful, it must reflect the balance between leadership gifts and broad participation. United Way Gifts You can support both Trinity Catholic High School and participate in your Corporate United Way Campaign by designating TCHS as the recipient of your gift on your donor choice form. TCHS will receive your gift through the United Way based on your payroll deduction instructions or as a one- time amount. Our school EIN is #06-1560972. The Veritas Society is a formal organization of lead benefactors and is open to all individuals, companies and foundations who have made a minimum Annual Fund gift of $1,000. Mia Terenzio ‘15 and Angela Tournas ‘15 Gifts of Stock It may be tax-wise to contribute stock rather than cash. Gifts of appreciated stock help you avoid paying capital gains tax on the stock’s increased value. Furthermore, you receive an income tax deduction for the stock’s full fair market value on the date you make the gift. (Stock must have been held for more than a year.) Your gift to the Annual Fund is an investment in the academic, spiritual and experiential enrichment of all TCHS students. We depend on our dedicated Trinity Catholic families and alumni to help keep our school in a position of fiscal stability. Molly Sheridan ‘16 and Alex DeVita ‘16 Class of 2015 Fall Retreat 2014-–2015 Annual Fund Honor Roll of Donors Annual Fund Honor Roll of Donors Thank you to the many friends and benefactors who have contributed to the 2014-2015 Annual Fund. Gifts listed are for the fiscal year July 1, 2014, and ending June 30, 2015. We strive hard to avoid errors and omissions but occasional mistakes do occur. If your name was omitted, listed incorrectly or misspelled, please accept our sincere apology and notify us of the error. The Veritas Society The Veritas Society is comprised of lead benefactors who, through their generosity, demonstrate a commitment to the vision and mission of Trinity Catholic High School. Membership in the Society is open to all individuals, companies and foundations that make a gift of $1,000 or more to the Annual Fund. We remain grateful for all in the Society whose uncommon generosity sets the standard for philanthropy at Trinity Catholic High School. General Giving Circles These gifts form the foundation of support for our efforts at Trinity Catholic High School. If you look around, you will see proof of it. Trinity is not simply a school, but a family that passes along its treasured values from generation to generation. To be a Crusader is to leave a legacy of faith and goodwill. Our Third Annual Legacy Gala, held on Saturday evening, May 2nd, paid tribute to several exceptional individuals who have been an integral part of Trinity Catholic High School. A Legacy of Encouragement Tom ‘74 and Lisa Duddie P’15 have demonstrated a commitment to Catholic education and Trinity Catholic High School by remaining strong advocates for the school’s mission where students can discover their full potential. They have given their time and efforts to ensure that our student body thrives. A Legacy of Purpose Monsignor Edward Surwilo is the embodiment of the Trinity Catholic High School mission, aiding in the spiritual growth of the youth of Stamford. He set the standard for future chaplains with the incredible bond he built with students, faculty and alumni. A Legacy of Service The Pavia Family ‘66,’68,’72 continues to be a valuable support system for Trinity Catholic High School and the City of Stamford. Their tireless efforts to better our community and the results they have produced serve as a constant reminder of what hard work and commitment to service can accomplish. The Legacy of Excellence The 1966 State & FCIAC Championship Football Team rose to victory through their dedication, good sportsmanship and faith. The team members set a foundation of excellence for all future athletes and are a shining example of what it means to be a team and a Crusader. They serve as examples of what means to care for not only their students but also for the entire school community. There is no better example of such an educator than Ernie Bourcier, or Mr. B as he is known by the greater Trinity Catholic High School community. This past June, Mr. B. retired after an impressive 47 years of service to his beloved TCHS. The faculty and staff presented Ernie with a statue of St. Jude, his favorite saint and the patron saint of lost souls. Ernie has been given many a soul direction for 47 years and it was a touching token of the faculty and staff’s appreciation for someone who has spent almost half a century in service to the school. For just four short years between 1988 and 1992 I was fortunate to have been a student in Mr. B’s French class. My saying he was one of the best teachers I ever had is ironic considering I would fail a basic French test if one were given to me today (although I can tell you anything you may wish to know about Monsieur and Madame Tibot). The truth is, what I learned from Mr. B goes well beyond what he taught in the classroom; you see in addition to teaching me French, Mr. B had me selling grapefruits, participating in blood drives, volunteering at the New Covenant House, and working countless health fairs. Through his example, Ernie showed me the importance of spending my time in the service of my community helping make someone else’s day a little bit brighter and using my talents for the greater good. Ernie was raised in New Bedford, MA, and was the baby of his family. His father was a custodian and a well-respected member of the community; so much so that his employer made a large donation to a Catholic school ensuring Ernie’s admittance (his tuition was also covered). It was at that school that Ernie came to respect the religious brothers who were in charge of the school. “There was no such thing as detention. If you did something wrong, a brother would come to you, hand you a pair of boxing gloves, and say ‘let’s talk it over in the gym.’” After high school Ernie decided to answer a call to religious life and entered a novitiate program for the Brothers of the Holy Cross. Religion has played a big part in Ernie’s life, “My mother would have us praying on our knees every night. Sometimes we would be praying so long my father would fake back pain to signal it was time to stop.” Entering the brotherhood was eye opening as he had to take vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience with the last vow being quite challenging. “We were all given assignments, and one day I was told to catch, kill, and clean a chicken. I had never done that before and I didn’t know what I was doing, but I had to do it. I had to be obedient.” This story is actually near and dear to my heart because if we ever wanted to distract Mr. B from teaching a full class, my classmates and I would conspire to have Mr. B talk about the chickens. Doing so would lead to a tangent that even the bell couldn’t stop. In 1968 Ernie decided not to take his final vows, and he left the brotherhood to follow what he considered to be his true vocation as a teacher. He confessed, “I felt that I could do more as a teacher than as a brother.” He came to Stamford Catholic High School in 1968 only to be told on a weekly basis by the sister in charge of the school at that time that she didn’t know how long he was going to be kept around. Those first few years were particularly challenging. Ernie was not much older than the students he was teaching, and it took him a good four years to develop confidence as an educator. Over those four years, Ernie had bonded with the students, the school, and the entire school community. “I once took a woman to a play that we had at school, and the sister who ran the library said to me, ‘that will be the last time you take that girl out because you are married to this school.’” And what a lovely bride she is. Mr. B Circa 1970 Ernie Bourcier or Mr. B Fast forward forty seven years, and Ernie’s marriage to the school remains strong. While he has officially retired from teaching, he remains active working in alumni relations. You will still see him out front directing traffic and dodging cars driven by former alumni who’d like to run him over. As a matter of fact, the driveway has been officially renamed “Mr. B’s Boulevard.” Ernie is so passionate about keeping the spirit of the school alive that he would like to write a book about the history of the school and, true to form, would donate all proceeds back to the school. I guess he still takes that vow of poverty seriously! I started my interview with Ernie with one key question in mind; what could be so great about a school that would encourage one to spend almost half a century in its employment? After my discussion with Ernie, I realize I was asking the wrong question. The right question, of course, is what is it about Ernie that would encourage a school to keep him around for so long? Like Jeopardy, the answer can be phrased in the form of question; what school wouldn’t want a dedicated teacher with tremendous integrity, a passion for the school community and a true concern for the wider community?
