With each diagnosis, there is also a loved one – a parent, a husband or wife, a daughter or son, a friend or partner – who is now living with cancer. At Gilda’s Club New York City, we believe that living with cancer is a family experience. Our innovative and comprehensive support program is growing 20% annually. Each month our members come to our West Houston Clubhouse and our satellites in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Manhattan to attend over 100 support and networking groups, 5-7 educational lectures and 25-30 workshops. This does not include our many social events which bring our members together, like Noogiefest (our Halloween party), our Winter Wonderland Celebration and our Remembrance Gathering. We are experts in creating welcoming communities of cancer support for the entire family – 100% free of charge. 2012 has been an exciting year for GCNYC. There have been many new initiatives: Amigos Unidos – our bilingual Spanish support program; Teens Connect for teens living with a parent diagnosed with cancer or who have lost a parent to cancer; Gilda’s Study Corner, where trained volunteers help children with their homework prior to attending a Noogie Night support group; Camp Sparkle, our special day camp for children who are touched by cancer; and our Junior Associate Board for teens who want to volunteer and help our special community. They are all helping to build an even stronger community. This year we have also expanded our Gilda Comes to You satellites to reach New Yorkers in the neighborhoods where they live. Four of our six satellites are now located at hospitals: Montefiore-Einstein Medical Center, Kings County Hospital Center, Bellevue Hospital, and Roosevelt Hospital (our newest satellite location). Our satellite support programs represent 36% of our total support program. All of this would not be possible without the support of our large community of members, dedicated staff, committed volunteers and generous donors. Your commitment to our mission has helped to ensure that thousands of New Yorkers will not have to face cancer alone. Thank you for generously supporting GCNYC to help us meet the growing needs of our cancer community. Robert J. Easton Board Chair Lily Safani CEO Our Mission Gilda’s Club New York City creates welcoming communities of free psychosocial support for everyone living with cancer – men, women, teens and children – along with their families and friends. Our innovative program provides an essential complement to medical care, providing support and networking groups, educational lectures, workshops and social activities – all free of charge. 2 Annual Report 2012 Our Clubhouse Our clubhouse is a warm and inviting place for our members to just be themselves. Camp Sparkle – a special place for children offered when school is not in session. In addition to Noogieland and Teens Connect, GCNYC had a successful first year of Camp Sparkle – offering 6 weeks of fun themes, specialized workshops, field trips and lots of laughter to 30 children during breaks from school in February, April, July, and August. 3 Our Satellites We know it can be difficult for some to travel. There are times when members can’t get to our Clubhouse – so Gilda’s Club NYC created a satellite network of community partners to be sure we reach as many New York City residents as possible. Thanks to the generosity of The Greater NYC Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Kings County Hospital and others, we’ve expanded our outreach and continue to expand so that Gilda’s Club NYC will be in all five boroughs and in as many communities as needed. 1368 m embe atten rs ded 2 79 Supp ort G roup and N s etwo rking Grou ps 383 members attended 21 Workshops and Educational Lectures Our Locations: • Bellevue Hospital Center (Manhattan) • Berkeley Carroll School (Brooklyn) • Kings County Hospital Center for Cancer Care (Brooklyn) • Montefiore-Einstein Center for Cancer Care (Bronx) • Prospect Park YMCA (Brooklyn) • Roosevelt Hospital, Continuum Health Partners, Inc. At Gilda’s Club, we are grateful for the generous support and kindness that they show to our members and to our staff. Volunteers play a vital role in our program and are a much valued asset to our community. Why I Volunteer I was once a member here and found that Gilda’s really helped me through a rough time in my life - I wanted to give back in some way. Over the years I volunteered at various events… I met a lot of wonderful people in the clubhouse. I will always continue to volunteer for Gilda’s because I believe in what they stand for and what they do. Gilda Radner wanted a place like this for everyone who needed it. There really isn’t any place like it where everyone can go instead of separate organizations. More than 300 volunteers donated 3800 hours of their time in 2012. February 2 Donor Appreciation The GCNYC Board of Directors hosted our second Donor Appreciation Reception to thank our growing family of supporters. The event recognized 30 new individuals and organizations who were added to our Donor Wall, for their commitment to our mission and support of our program. The Year May 5 EIF/Revlon Run/Walk For the 15th year GCNYC has been a proud and grateful beneficiary of the EIF Revlon Run/Walk for Women. We had an exuberant 46-person team who walked from Times Square to Central Park in support of raising awareness and funds to keep our program free for members. Thirty volunteers lent a hand in Times Square and Central Park. As a beneficiary of the walk, GCNYC received $57,000 to support its program. May 6 TD Bike Tour We were very excited to have 16 enthusiastic team members participate in the 2012 TD Bank 5 Boro Bike Tour, raising $15,176. Physical Equilibrium LLC generously volunteered their time and services to lead our team training again this year! We welcome back our coach Sarah Currie, from Physical Equilibrium, who led one practice group ride for the group. November 4 ING NYC Marathon Unfortunately, our marathon team did not compete in the 2012 marathon due to the enormous storm, Hurricane Sandy, which pummeled the east coast. We are very proud to report that many of our team members volunteered their time, on November 4, to help others who were affected by the storm. Our team raised more than $100,000 in support of GCNYC – a new record. The marathoners will have an opportunity to race in the 2013 marathon. Gilda’s Club New York City 7 GCNYC Ambassador Emma Stone May 9 Benefit Luncheon: Celebrating Women Working & Living with Cancer Emma graciously offered to be our GCNYC Ambassador and raise awareness for Gilda’s Club.
