Over ten years, we have worked hard to create an orchestra for the 21st Century, maintaining the beautiful and glorious tradition of classical music and presenting it in ways that connect with more people than ever before. I’m so grateful that I’ve had such strong support from the musicians, administration, board, and audience to make our dreams a reality. I can’t wait to see and hear what’s next for this amazing orchestra, but for now, let’s celebrate!” —Edwin Outwater, Music Director 2016 Photo: Ben Lariviere Photography 6 2014 KITCHENER-WATERLOO SYMPHONY 2016|17 SEASON Photo: Larry Williamson 2016|17 SEASON 2007–2017 EDWIN HIGHLIGHTS Photo: Andrew Tolson 2007|08 Edwin Outwater begins his duties as the KWS Music Director. Haydn’s 102nd Symphony is one of his greatest, full of witty twists and turns and startling orchestrations. Farina’s Capriccio Stravagante is a rarely heard work for strings, full of eccentricity and humour. Between these two works is Ravel’s miniature masterpiece, a tribute to the Baroque master Couperin, as well as his friends whom he lost in World War I. 2 | AN EVENING IN PRAGUE A tribute to the great city of Prague, this incredible concert features works by three great Czech composers, Zelenka, Smetana and Dvořák, all written in the city itself. Included is Dvořák’s Serenade for Strings, one of his most popular orchestral works and composed in just two weeks! Prague was on Mozart’s mind as he wrote Eine kleine Nachtmusik. He was also composing his opera Don Giovanni, which would soon premiere there. Like the opera, it is one of Mozart’s most beloved works.
