FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL’S DESK
Dear Parents and Girls
Welcome back to another busy and exciting school year. I trust that all our families had a blessed
festive season and that we are all well rested and ready to take on the opportunities and challenges that
2016 will bring. A very special welcome to our new staff and our new girls, especially our Grade Rs
and Grade 8s who start new chapters in their educational journey. We hope that you will soon feel part
of the Holy Rosary family.
For Holy Rosary, 2015 was a year of change. Mrs Gray, Mrs Damhuis and I have settled into our new
roles and I thank the Holy Rosary community for the wonderful support that we have received. I look
forward to this year with great excitement as we continue to work together, with God’s guidance, to
take our school to even greater heights.
I would like to congratulate the matrics of 2015. Once again we had a 100% pass rate, but we are
especially delighted with our 100% Bachelor Degree passes. What an achievement! A special ‘well
done’ to our Top Achievers: Amy Hammann (7 distinctions); Theané Dietrich, Caitlyn Callanan and
Taylor Rattray (6 distinctions); Abigail Park and Christine Thurgood (5 distinctions) and Shaan
Forster, Kelsey Korras and Lauren Soll (4 distinctions). We are enormously proud of each and every
girl, they worked hard and we are confident that they will do well in their future endeavours.
Congratulations to all their teachers, from Nursery School right up to Grade 12. You have all played a
vital role in their lives and their excellent results are a credit to you. A special ‘thank you’ to the
matric teachers who shouldered the final responsibility of ensuring that each girl achieved her full
potential.

FROM THE PRIMARY SCHOOL
Happy New Year to one and all.
It is a pleasure and a privilege to welcome you back to Holy Rosary School for 2016. This
first week has begun with much excitement. The classrooms are buzzing with activity as
our girls settle into their new classes. We look forward to a productive 2016.
Congratulations to the matrics of 2015, as well as the parents and the teachers who have
helped them along the way. The many distinctions are a testament to the amount of hard
work that everyone has put in. It is rare for 100% of the students to achieve Bachelor
Degree passes and we are so proud of all of you.
It is a tradition to hold our Primary School concert every second year, and this year our
creative team is planning furiously. We will keep you posted as to the themes which will be
part of our production. The concert dates have been set for the 28 and 29 of June and
rehearsals will begin in earnest during the second term.
I would like to share some advice from the Sunday Times written by Judith Ancer, a
Johannesburg based psychologist.
Ten Gifts worth giving your child.
(not one of them can be bought)
1. The gift of optimism. Hope keeps us positive.
2. The gift of compassion.
3. The gift of courage.
4. The gift of humour. Humour is a sign of emotional intelligence. Not to take yourself
too seriously.
5. The gift of community and connectedness to our families, friends and
communities.
6. The gift of competence. Children who learn to do chores become ‘children who can
and who know they can’.
7. The gift of conviction. Finding meaning in faith, other people and the future.
8. The gift of curiosity.
9. The gift of creativity. This is not so much about being artistic but seeing old things
in new ways. To experiment with ideas and to learn to make a mistake.
10. Finally, the gift of perspective and common sense. To make do and tolerate
imperfection. Tell yourself that sometimes it’s okay to be a good enough parent with a
good enough child. Recognise that ordinary everyday things are acts of pleasure.
These are gifts that will be carried with your children wherever they go, as part
of themselves, to be passed on to others, gifts to be shared with the world.
May 2016 be a year of growth and developing your gifts and talents and of having a
chance to share them with the world.

RELIGIOUS NEWS
We usually enter the New Year with a sense of anticipation and apprehension. We welcome
the prospects of making New Year’s resolutions and the opportunity of re-inventing
ourselves, in the areas in which we would like to grow. We may, however, also feel unsure
of the challenges which may present themselves and our ability to cope with circumstances.
Our girls are not immune to these conflicting emotions.
Next Wednesday, the whole school will celebrate the Academic Mass to ask for God’s
blessings on their families, work, extra-curricular activities and friendships. We are so
privileged to begin our school year with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass where we shall have
the opportunity to offer God our praise, thanksgiving and petitions, as we enter a new
academic year.
This reflection encapsulates the teachers’ hopes and prayers for all of the precious children
who are in our care at Holy Rosary.
Dear Lord,
what will this year bring?
We do not know.
It will bring its usual times of work and play,
experiences of success and failure,
all the components which are part of school life.
It is a new beginning;
the planting of a seed which will grow for a year,
the seed of fruit which will blossom in times to come.
It is a source of new hope;
hope for good work, understanding and successful results.
In this coming year, may there be an abundance of prayer, learning and fun.
May there be faith, hard work and friendship.
May no student in this school be lonely;
may no one feel left out or excluded;
may no one suffer through the thoughtlessness of others.
As we begin this year in prayer and friendship,
we ask the Lord to begin it with us, to be with us during it
and to successfully bring it to its conclusion.
Amen.
May peace, love and joy accompany each member of our Holy Rosary family throughout
2016.

INFORMATION EVENINGS
Holy Rosary parents are always supportive and eager to assist their girls in every way
possible. These evenings are extremely well attended. This is your first and most important
opportunity to hear how best to acclimatise your girls with the routines and expectations of
their new grade.
Each evening will begin with a motivational speaker who will address parents in the hall.
This will be followed by an extremely informative talk by the class/grade teachers which will
assist you enormously in ensuring a happy year in your daughter’s new grade.

Guest Speaker: Colleen Johnson (Counselling and Educational Psychologist)
She will be focusing on encouraging parents to develop a constructive and consistent
parenting foundation that will enable their children to feel safe and secure enough to
venture forth on their own, trusting in their ability to behave independently and to make
good choices for their lives.
Intersen Phase Information Evening: 26 January 2016 17:30 (School Hall)
Guest Speaker: Debbie de Jong (Learning Support Specialist, Educator and Co-author of
the book ‘The Manual that Never Came with Your Child’.
She will talk about Bouncing back: How to raise resilient children. Resilience means the
ability to cope with the knocks that life sends to all of us. It is a necessary life skill that
enables us to manage adversity without becoming overanxious, stressed or depressed.
Resilience does not remove distress or difficulties, rather it helps us get through these
difficulties using healthy coping mechanisms. She will share practical resilience-building
strategies that will help parents teach their children how to ‘Bounce Back’
We look forward to meeting you all and sharing a productive evening.
We regret that this evening will be too long for children to sit in and listen. There will be no
facilities or care givers available to look after children at school so we request that you make
special arrangements for your children to be cared for at home on these evenings.

RECEPTION YEAR NEWS
We are so proud of our girls who settled into “Big School” with ease this week. They spent
the week getting to know their teachers, peers and their new surroundings.
We welcome our third year intern, Miss van Rensburg to Mrs Latre’s class. We look forward
to an exciting year together.
Reminder: The girls need to have a Holy Rosary hat. These hats will remain at school on
their hooks.
Art t-shirts which are in their locker are to remain at school.
Swimming starts on Wednesday, 20th January during the school day. Please send your
daughters’ Holy Rosary costume, blue or white flip flops, and any swimming cap and a Holy
Rosary Poncho towel in the tog bag that was supplied at the New Childrens’ Party. Please
label all costumes, towels, flip flops and caps.

purses home on Thursday afternoon. Please send R10 in their purses, an empty plastic
lunchbox and something for them to drink to school on that day. The tuck girls for the day
will have been given a reminder.
We will be playing in the Mud on Thursday, 28th January. A detailed letter will go home
next week.

EXTRA MURAL INFORMATION 2016
All students participating in extra-murals must meet under the covered walkway at the end of the
school day. Registers will be taken and students must walk down to Shanahan Park with the
teacher/coaches in charge.
Children not collected from Shanahan Park will be walked back up to reception at the end of the last
extra-mural session.
Grade 1 and 2 Swimming Practice.
These sessions are for Grade 1 and 2 students who are able to swim 25m freestyle and 25m backstroke
without assistance.
Grade 1 and 2 Learn to Swim.
These sessions are for Grade 1 and 2 students who cannot swim 25m freestyle and backstroke.
U9 – Open Swimming
These sessions are for Grade 3-7 students who have made the School A, B or C swimming team. Team
lists will be put on the sports notice board by 22 January 2016.
Early Morning Swimming
These sessions are for Grade 4-7 students who have made the Schools A swimming team. Team lists
will be put on the sports notice board by 22 January 2016.
Swimming Non – team
These sessions are for Grade 3-7 students who have not made the Schools swimming team.
If your child would like to participate in a cultural activity, you may attend one swimming practice a
week.
If the cultural and sport activities clash, the student will need to choose an extra mural for the term.

Fun! Adventure! Challenge for girls aged 10-14 years
If you enjoy cooking, playing games, creative thinking,
crafts, the great outdoors, helping others, camping,
hiking, being with your friends and doing your best, then you need to join us!
Cutty Sark Girl Guides has been meeting in the Edenvale area since 1968 and we’re always
looking for young ladies to join us and to have loads of FUN!
We meet on Thursday evenings from 17h30 to 19h30 at the Harmelia Gardens Air Scout Hall,
Partridge Avenue, Highway Gardens.
