The Riverside Beacon
The Riverside Beacon A publication of Riverside Baptist Church May 2016 May 8th is Mother’s Day. The modern American holiday of Mother's Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother at St Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. In 1908, the US Congress rejected a proposal to make Mother's Day an official holiday, joking that they would have to proclaim also a "Mother-in-law's Day". However, owing to the efforts of Anna Jarvis, by 1911 all US states observed the holiday. In 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother's Day, held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers. The Bible had its own idea about the honoring of mothers and it is found in Proverbs 31:25-31 “Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. (26) She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. (27) She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. (28) Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. (29) Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. (30) Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. (31) Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.” I hope you will indulge me to share from my own experience in the honor of my mother, Elizabeth “Betty” Newton. She was born in 1918 and just celebrated her 98th birthday. She met the love of her life, my dad and was married. In 1942 she had her first son at the age of 24. Two years later she had her second child, also a son. She was excited to be a mother. When these two boys started school, she wanted to try for a girl and so I was born, not the girl she had wanted. Two years later, one last try for a girl and my little brother was born. She was the mother of four boys. Boys who were brought up to love and respect her as the person our dad adored. We were taught about love, honor and respect by these two parents. They seemed to be always in agreement about our discipline, and the headship of our home. Mom loved Dad and Dad loved Mom and we were taught to love them and obey them as a team. My father passed away when my little brother and I were still at home. For about five years, my mother had the responsibility of raising these two teen boys on her own. Although difficult at times, we knew she was to be honored and respected, Dad would expect that of us. That has never stopped by any of us boys. I’m pretty sure that if you were to ask any of our wives they would tell you that we are “momma boys”. Ruby and I were watching a program the other night and she said that she admired a young man on the program because he loved his momma and that showed he was a man of integrity. Knowing that she has said of me on many occasions that I am a “momma’s boy” I simply responded, “thank you”. Oh, by the way, those two teens raised by their godly mom are both preachers today. It’s important that we honor our parents! God expects this of us!
