-MESSAGE TO THE UNITED NATIONS ASSOCIATION OF NEW YORK
ANNUAL HUMANITARIAN AWARDS DINNER
New York, 23 October 2013
IT’S A JOURNEY WE
ALL TAKE TOGETHER.
I am delighted to send warm greetings to all participants in the United Nations
Association of New York 2013 Humanitarian Awards Dinner. Thank you for being
among our greatest and most valued supporters.
We thank the United Nations Association
of New York for honoring Dr. Norbert
Reithofer, Chairman and CEO, BMW
Group, with the 2013 Humanitarian
Award. At BMW Group, we share the
United Nations’ goal of a sustainable
future. Since 1999, BMW Group is the only
car manufacturer to be continuously
ranked in the Dow Jones Sustainability
Index (DJSI).
Congratulations, Dr. Reithofer. Thank
you for leading BMW Group’s dedication
to the wise use of resources and the
significant reduction of emissions to
ensure a sustainable future for us all.
I am pleased to join others in congratulating the awardees, Dr. Norbert Reithofer
and BMW Group, for their important achievements in advancing sustainable energy
and environmental sustainability. BMW Group works with the UN Global Compact
corporate sustainability initiative and has made a valuable commitment towards my
Sustainable Energy for All initiative. Dr. Reithofer has been a leader in promoting a
much-needed transition to a green economy.
Sustainable Energy for All aims to mobilize a diverse range of partners to reach
three interlinked goals by 2030: to provide universal access to modern energy services;
double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency; and double the share of
renewable energy in the global energy mix.
I welcome the focus of UNA-NY on sustainable energy, which can power
opportunity and economies, light up homes, schools and hospitals, and help to usher in
the future we want.

Distinguished Honoree, Guests and Friends,
It is with great pleasure that the Board of the United Nations Association
of New York welcomes you to our 2013 UN Day Gala. Today we commemorate
the 68th anniversary of the United Nations. In our capacity as the UNA’s host
city chapter, we reaffirm with you tonight the significance of the international
collaboration and global unity that the United Nations represents.
At this year’s Gala, we celebrate corporate excellence in furthering
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s decade-long initiative to power social
and economic opportunity through the global promotion and expansion
of sustainable energy. More than 1.3 billion people—one in five globally—
lack electricity to light their homes or to power schools and businesses.
The Secretary-General’s initiative will fuel opportunity by promoting universal
access to modern energy sources, increasing efficiency, and doubling the
renewable energy in the global energy mix.
Our 2013 Humanitarian Award acknowledges the commitment of
our honoree, Dr. Norbert Reithofer, Chairman and CEO of BMW Group,
to environmental sustainability, innovation, and technological excellence.
BMW Group is an industry leader in the areas of sustainable energy and
responsible environmental impact. We recognize and salute Dr. Reithofer and
the BMW Group for their exemplary corporate governance, global social
responsibility, and leadership role in promoting the United Nations’ Millennium
Development Goals.
On this 68th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, we take
great pleasure in welcoming you all. We are most grateful for your generous
support of UNA-NY’s mission to inform and engage the American public in the
global issues and international work of the United Nations, and we hope you
enjoy the evening.
.
Sincerely,
Abid Qureshi
President

The United Nations Association of New York (www.unanyc.org) is the New York
affiliate and host city chapter of UNA-USA and a program of the UN Foundation.
UNA-NY is dedicated to supporting the principles and vital work of the United
Nations in order to strengthen the United Nations system and promote constructive United States leadership. Eleanor Roosevelt was one of the founding forces
behind UNA, and the specific mission of UNA-NY has changed little from her
original vision— we continue to work primarily through public outreach and
educational programs highlighting the work of the United Nations.
Our Monthly Programs are the main interface with our members and the public.
During these programs, expert speakers and panels from various backgrounds
focus on subjects relevant to the UN.
The Worldview Institute continues with the sixth of its annual semesters, attracting young executives and managers seeking to broaden their understanding
of international affairs. Our popular and informative semesters (ten seminars
each) are taught by distinguished associate faculty in academia, diplomacy, and
business. This year’s Worldview topics ranged from the Eurozone crisis, transitions in the Arab world, understanding China, to the impact of the financial crisis
in Latin America, women’s rights and the situation in Syria.
Screening the Issues, the film series of UNA-NY, is now in its fifth year and
continues to highlight cinematic works that are related to the goals of the UN.
We showcase films that represent a wide range of countries and speak out for
pressing challenges and issues that directly impact our interdependent world, the
resolution of which are crucial to international peace and security. Our screenings
are followed by lively discussions with the filmmakers, producers or subject experts from the UN. This year we screened: Portrait of Wally; the Oscar nominated
War Witch, exploring the reality of children in armed conflict, and Displaced but
Not Defeated, about a young Colombian girl living in displacement. We also participated in the 2013 Human Rights Watch Film Festival in June and sponsored
two screenings, The Parade and Born This Way, highlighting human rights issues
in Serbia and Cameroon.
The Ambassador Series, in collaboration with the Columbia University Club of
New York, brings UNA-NY and Columbia Club members face to face with UN
ambassadors to discuss topical issues. In our recent presentations of the series,
now entering its sixth year, we heard from Ambassador Christopher Hill, Dean of
the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver who
spoke on U.S.–Asia policy. We also had an evening at the Pakistan Mission to the
UN, where we were warmly welcomed by Ambassador Masood Khan, who talked
to us about Pakistan at the United Nations. In April, our joint program with the
Japan Society featured the Director General of the International Atomic Agency,
Mr. Yukiya Amano.
Our BookTalkUNA series presents current books and authors, in partnership
with the Institute of International Education. This year we hosted award-winning
international journalist and author Blaine Harden, whose Escape from Camp 14
12
offers a shocking and true story of a North Korean political prison camp. Our March
co-presentation with the Asia Society featured the book Shahnameh: The Epic of
the Persian Kings. We also hosted Molly Melching from Senegal who presented her
latest book, However Long the Night, in which she discusses her lifetime of work
empowering women and girls to end female genital cutting. Our Annual Meeting in
May warmly welcomed historian and scholar Roger Lipsey and his new biography
Hammarskjöld: A Life, about the life of the second Secretary-General, Dag Hammarskjöld. More recently we hosted Karen Elliott House who shared her latest book
On Saudi Arabia, and Qais Akbar Omar who presented his book about his life in
Afghanistan, A Fort of Nine Towers.
Our Student Alliance Program encourages globally-minded high school, undergraduate and graduate students to make their opinions heard on international
issues. The program inspires students to organize school-wide events, lectures,
and films to engage other students and explain the importance of the Millennium
Development Goals.
In February, the Education Department of UNA-NY hosted the Union County
TEAMS Charter School and Leadership Academy from New Jersey at the United
Nations. The program concentrated on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and
Math) educational initiatives by providing a panel of representatives. After a tour
of the United Nations, scientists, engineers and attorneys talked about diversity,
leadership, career and service training. The students of TEAMS also embraced an
international community service initiative: The Survival of Haiti for Women and
Girls.
UNA-NY Career Programs offer an opportunity for our members to meet and speak
with international personnel who provide valuable advice while sharing their experiences. Our program last fall introduced the UN High Commissioner for Refugees,
in which attendees heard about the nature of living and working in the field, and
how to navigate getting a job with UNHCR. This fall we will highlight UNICEF,
providing insights on how the organization works day-by-day to improve the lives
of children, as well as a look into the scope of current UNICEF careers.
Our Second Summer Evening Soirée took place at the Hudson Terrace in July. An
estimated 300 energetic, globally-minded New Yorkers came together in a fun and
relaxed setting aimed at facilitating networking and camaraderie throughout our
organization
This October we again celebrate UN Day with our Annual Humanitarian Awards
Gala Dinner, as we continue to recognize individuals who have made significant
contributions to international affairs. This year we honor the work of Dr. Norbert
Reithofer, Chairman and CEO of BMW Group. We recognize BMW as a responsible
leading company exemplifying environmental sustainability, leadership, innovation
and technological excellence, committed to corporate governance and environmental impact consistent with the principles of the UN Global Compact and those of the
Millennium Development Goals.
