Beth and I have commented to each other frequently that we have had the opportunity to meet and work with so many wonderful people we would have never come to know if not for this year. We want to thank all the many members who stepped up and contributed to such a successful year. We can’t begin to name all the wonderful people who made this year what it was, but you can rest assured that you have a special place in our hearts. We would like to especially recognize the members of the Entertainment Committee headed by Cora Wright and Bobbie Hanna, and the Tiki Committee led by Jim Deniro. These two committees worked hard to provide some outstanding activities and events this year. I would also like to give a big “Thank You” to my “Commodorable” Beth. She was the one with so many great ideas. The endless hours she spent helped make this a fun year. As we all know, a captain of a ship is only as good as his crew. At the Venice Yacht Club, the Commodore is only as good as the Board. I want to thank the Flag Officers and Board for their hard work and strong support throughout the past year. On a sad note, last month, the Board lost Shirley Ambrose, our Board Secretary. She will be greatly missed, for she was a bright spot and very dedicated member of the Board. Beth and I want to wish everyone a joyous New Year. We also wish Tony and Kathy Zumbano good luck and smooth sailing in 2013. Finally, thank you to the VYC membership for allowing us to be your Commodore and First Mate. We have been very proud to be part of such a wonderful yacht club. Bob Piel, Commodore bobpiel@comcast.net January 2013 Manager’s Column Happy New Year! Before welcoming in the New Year, I would like to look back at 2012. While the private club industry has endured some very challenging economic times, Venice Yacht Club has navigated through rough waters and minimal setbacks. In fact, VYC continues to improve its facility. One of the reasons why your Club has fared so well is due to the leadership and experience of outgoing Commodore Bob Piel and his hard working life partner, Beth. Thank you Bob and Beth - it was a pleasure to work with you both! I would like to welcome our new leadership duo, incoming Commodore Tony Zumbano and his lovely mate, Kathy. Along with planning a fun-filled year of activities, Kathy has agreed to continue to lead and guide the Membership Committee. With the continuity that I have seen in the upcoming Flag Officers and new Board Members, they will continue to hold the VYC to the top level. One of the greatest strengths of the Venice Yacht Club is its membership. We are lucky to be surrounded by a caring, involved membership. Thank you! May your boating and traveling be safe and full of adventure (the good kind). The Moon: the full moon this month is January 26th. It is the Full Wolf Moon. It will occur at 11:28 p.m. The Lighting of the Fleet was a spectacular sight and one the most enjoyable events of the year. This is totally different than what we experienced in St. Louis. At this time of year, the boat would be winterized and covered with a tarp – not to be seen again until April. How novel it is to use your boat year round and decorate with shorts on. Michele and I really treasure visiting with all our friends at VYC, admiring the boats and being involved Notes on Our Boats by Jim Irwin This Issue: “Sea Breeze” Captain Charles and Rita Miller It’s late October, 2005. Charles walks out of the Key West condo he and Rita share and strolls over to his rental car. He opens the door and looks in: front seat, back seat, windows, all okay. Water in the ashtrays… Water in the ashtrays? That’s right. The ashtray water is what remains of the flood that covered eight feet of this island paradise, caused by Hurricane Wilma. Charles and Rita lived through it all, with high winds and power failures, trees uprooted, and boats thrown up on land. Charles leaves his rental car and walks over to the marina where Sea Breeze rests calmly at her dock, undamaged. Thanks to a floating dock and high pilings, Sea Breeze rode out Wilma’s destructive force. Charles and Rita would take her out soon. Sea Breeze, built by Sea Ray in 2003, is 42’ of luxury sedan bridge. With a beam that stretches 14’ 3”, there’s plenty of room for Charles and Rita to entertain lots of friends. Visitors can open the sliding glass door and step into an extra-wide salon with panoramic windows, soft leather sofas, and a walk-around galley an arm stretch away. One step up is a dining area that comfortably seats six. Forward of all this is a guest stateroom with two single beds and a fullsized head with stand-up shower. Still forward, the captain’s with the Venice Boat Parade. Congratulations to Gus and Karla Olson on their festive and winning boat. Glad we could be crew for you. Kaboom!! Tidbits: The Coast Guard has rescued nearly 1,000,000 people since being founded in 1790. Be safe on the water and use good judgment even when the “other” guy isn’t. Thanks to Marlene and Jim for the fine work they do at the docks every day. They are always at the ready to lend a helpful hand. Respectfully submitted, Denny Wertheimer - Fleet Captain, Sail Phone: (941) 966-5363 denny.wertheimer@gmail.com Bob Senn - Asst. Fleet Captain, Sail Phone: (941) 412 - 9336 stateroom fills the entire bow with bed, lots of cedar-lined storage, and another stand-up head and shower. Built-in TVs and other extras complement the Millers’ fine living aboard their “home away from home”. And, thanks to energetic Rita, Sea Breeze is immaculately clean, tastefully decorated, and welcoming to all who enter. Powered by two 450 hp. Cummins diesels, and loaded at the helm with the latest high-tech instruments, Sea Breeze takes the Millers wherever they go in style, safety, and comfort. Although they’ve been all around south Florida and the Florida Keys, Charles and Rita say their best trip on Sea Breeze was to the Bahamas in May 2010. They visited twelve islands in six weeks, from Nassau to Compass Cay, to Eleuthera and its wondrous pink sand beaches, and to others in the Exuma chain. Happy wanderers, they lived the seagoing, vagabond lifestyle. Family joined them for reef diving and exploring. Rita swam with sharks and lived to tell the tale. In sum, their trip to the Bahamas gave Charles and Rita unforgettable memories and adventures for a lifetime! Home port for Sea Breeze is at the Millers’ beautiful home on Manasota Key. Their Gulf of Mexico beachfront home, also called Sea Breeze, overlooks the surf, the sea, and sunsets that make Floridians proud. Across the road, their property leads out to Lemon Bay, reached by a raised private walkway that leads through wild trees and shrubs, then extends out to deep water. There, at the end of the Millers’ pier, Sea Breeze rests on her cradle, bright and beautiful, awaiting the start of another adventure. It might be a VYC cruise, a rendezvous with other boaters, or just a short trip by themselves. Whatever it is, Charles and Rita Miller will embrace the experience, savor the friendships made, and love every minute they spend on Sea Breeze. Bet on it! www.facebook.com/pages/Venice-Yacht-Club/134167726630175 ◆ www.veniceyachtclub.com January 2013 VENICE YACHT CLUB CURRENTS Palm Island Marina Rendezvous February 22 – 24 For cruise reservations, contact Jeff and Pam Graham at jeffpamgraham@gmail.com Palm Island Marina is one of VYC’s favorite cruise destinations. It is close by, has a great heated pool and the wonderful Johnny Leverocks Seafood House. Catch the ferry to scenic Palm Island Resort and visit the white Gulf of Mexico beaches! While you’re there, stop by the Rum Bay Restaurant for a special treat in a lush tropical setting. VYC Kayak Group Page 7 Message from the Fleet Captain Power This is my last Currents log entry as your Fleet Captain, Power. It has been a great two years. We offered 21 rendezvous, including our first three extended cruises in many years, and generated over 1,160 pleasurable boating days for our members. We hosted 99 Fleet Captains’ lunches, serving 2,010 meals which generated an estimated $28,000 in revenue for our Club and offered 38 speakers. We assisted the docking committee in the completion of the new docks, sponsored two boat inspection days with the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and hosted two wonderful Memorial Day weekends. We sent out 22 welcome letters describing our VYC boating activities to new members with power boats. All in all, we had a very successful 2011 and 2012, and it was my pleasure to serve you as Fleet Captain, Power. This success could not have been achieved without the very capable help of Assistant Fleet Captain, Power Turk Hemseri and his wife, Anita. A very special gratitude is expressed to our many Club members who volunteered as Cruise Leaders and to our many members who spoke at our Fleet Captains’ Lunches. Thank you one and all. We had no rendezvous in December. Our January rendezvous, to be led by Turk and Anita Hemseri, is to the Field Club, where I understand much fun will be had at my expense. Please contact the Hemseris to reserve a slip for this rendezvous. Non-boating members are encouraged to drive up to the Field Club on Friday, January 18 to join in the fun. Rendezvous for the first half of 2013 are listed in the schedule below. As I sign off for the last time as your Fleet Captain, Power, I want to wish much success to our incoming Fleet Captain, Power Turk Hemseri and Assistant Fleet Captain, Power Jack Murphy. Please give them your support and encouragement. Kayak Group leaders Nancy Simonetti and Beth Anderson picnic at Stump Pass. A minute for safety can save lives. All are invited to join us as we paddle the local waterways, sometimes launching from the Club and other times driving to another spot. If you don’t have your own kayak, borrow one of the VYC loaners by reserving through the Dockmaster at 483-3625. Michael Nemser - Fleet Captain, Power Phone: (941) 408-8789 Email: mfnemser@gmail.com Turk Hemseri - Asst. Fleet Captain, Power Phone: (941) 497-6424 Upcoming activities: Wednesday, January 9, 11:00 a.m. Launch at Stump Pass Beach State Park, paddle quiet waters to the pass, and picnic on a beach before paddling Ski Alley or the Gulf back to the park. Duration: 2.5 hours. Additional January trips will be organized and announced by e-mail. Call Nancy Simonetti at 486-8166 or Beth Anderson at 685-8065 for info and to be added to our e-mail contact list. We began the year without a director of our sailing program and hired a temporary administrator primarily for the registration of students in our summer “Learn to Sail” program while we searched for a permanent director. We strengthened our processes as required by more stringent IRS and State of Florida guidelines of 501(c)(3) organizations and worked to improve our ability to apply for grants and improve the overall caliber of our program and its offerings for sailing. Peter Eduardo joined us as our new director as our summer “Learn to Sail” program launched. We conducted more formal parents and sailor orientation meetings the Saturday morning before each two-week session began and will continue the new format in 2013. Our School Year enrollment is down slightly from previous years with 21 sailors on board. Increasing the number for next year is a major challenge because we compete with other sports, which have begun practicing on Saturdays this year. We are thrilled to have a Venice High School sailing team of 12 sailors this year. Most of the team members are sailing novices. They sail on Wednesday afternoons until dark after school. Our goal is for them to have fun on the water this year so they will return next year and improve their sailing ability for participation in high school regattas. We welcomed Holly Cook to the VYBA Board of Directors as the Liaison from the VYC Board of Directors, and we welcomed Joe Terranova and Beth Anderson, Liaison from the Bitter Ends, to our board. We plan to add two parents of our youngest sailors to our board since parent involvement makes a direct contribution in managing our sailing programs and especially with our preparations for participation in regattas. We look forward to 2013 with great enthusiasm! We will have a VYBA sailors/parents awards dinner in early January to present trophies for the special accomplishments of our young sailors in the fall/winter series. Interest in our private lessons program has increased in the past two months, and we invite adults of the VYC who may be interested to contact the VYBA about this new offering. As the old year ends and a new year begins, we express our sincere gratitude to the Venice Yacht Club Board of Directors for its continuing support as well as the great support and interest from individual members of the Club. Our website is: veniceyouthboating.com. Our phone is: 941-468-1719, and our director, Peter Eduardo, may be contacted at: director@veniceyouthboating.com. January 2013 Venice Yacht Club Charitable Foundation As our tenure as co-chairs has come to an end, we are buoyed and encouraged by the visibility within the Club and within the community that the Venice Yacht Club Charitable Foundation has earned. Deep thanks to the 2012 committee who contributed their TIME and TALENT: Matt DePalma, Merle Graser, Jerry Jarrett, Michael Nemser, Dewey Snowden, David Yarzab and Commodore Bob Piel. Thanks go out as well to all of you who have contributed your “TREASURE.” Donors at all levels, and gifts in memory or honor of friends, family and loved ones help to build the fund for the future. Eleven grant applications were received in advance of the November deadline. Of those requests received in this second and final 2012 cycle, six grants were awarded as follows: • Habitat for Humanity of South Sarasota County $750 for the Veterans’ Build project • Our Mother’s House - $860 for new cribs and mattresses • Venice Area Beautification - $250 for a hanging planter in the ongoing development of the Venice Avenue planter project • Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Suncoast - $1000 for one match for one year in the Decisions to Win high school drop-out prevention program • Literacy Volunteers of South Sarasota County $900 for expansion of the Reading Opens Doors program • Venice Art Center - $500 for a youth scholarship Children, families, veterans, and the community are bettered by these gifts. All six are squarely matched to our grant categories. All six benefit Venice and the local communities from which our yacht club members hail. All six make a big difference to the recipient organizations. These are the principles which have guided us in formalizing our grant making in 2012. With our words of gratitude for a year of good works come our hopes that participation will continue to grow, as will the fund going forward. Thank you, indeed. Ann C. The Centennial Exhibition will feature compelling human stories as best told through authentic artifacts recovered from the ocean floor and extensive room re-creations. The exhibition features artifacts never before seen in the Tampa Bay Area. We will also go to the famous Dali Museum. Salvador Dali is one of the most renowned artists in the world. He created a vast collection of work that is often as shocking as it is brilliant. The bus will depart at 10:00 a.m. from the former Albertsons parking lot. Return will be late afternoon. The price of $73.00 per person for the entire day will include admission to the Centennial Exhibition, Dali Museum, lunch at the 400 Beach Restaurant, and round trip transportation. This timeless classic is rousing and has a heartwarming score which you will enjoy. This is a matinee, and the bus will leave from the former Albertsons parking lot at 10:15 a.m. with a late afternoon return.
