Urban Acres market urbanacresmarket.com 1301B West Davis St. Dallas, TX 75208 EATING LOCAL IS NOT AS HARD AS YOU THINK. by RIA NARSIAH Why Eat Local? In our modern age of food preservatives and additives, genetically altered crops and E. coli outbreaks, people are increasingly concerned about the quality and cleanliness of the foods they eat. Given the impossibility of identifying the pesticides used and the route taken to grow and transport, say, a banana from Central POST UPTOWN DALLAS / MARCH 2013 America to our local supermarket, foods grown locally make a lot of sense for those who want more control over what they put into their bodies. Why Organic? In study after study, research from independent organizations consistently shows organic food is higher in nutrients than traditional foods. Research shows that organic produce is higher in vitamin C, antioxidants, and the minerals calcium, iron, chromium and magnesium. Organic foods are also free of neurotoxins -- toxins that are damaging to brain and nerve cells. A commonly-used class of pesticides called organophosphates was originally developed as a toxic nerve agent during World War I. When there was no longer a need for them in warfare, industry adapted them to kill pests on foods. Many pesticides are still considered neurotoxins. Inherent to the local food movement is the fact that farmers who sell direct to local consumers do not have to be distracted by packing, shipping and shelf life issues. They can instead focus on selecting, growing and harvesting crops to ensure peak qualities of freshness, nutrition and taste. Texas stands as a shining example of a four-season harvest. From summer’s juicy heirloom tomatoes to winter’s beautiful rainbow chard, Texas has some of the country’s best seasonal produce to offer yearround. Helping us Dallasites connect with our local farmers is Urban Acres, a North Oak Cliff market store that offers a “co-op style” produce system with pick-up locations all over Dallas that makes shopping easy and trying new veggies fun. This “co-op style” means that it’s an ongoing subscription and every other week you will receive a share of organic fruits and veggies, which includes You can visit their website to find out more on how to become a member of the co-op. In addition to the produce pick-ups, Urban Acres also offers a wide variety of products in their Oak Cliff market. The store is open to the public, not just co-op members. EVERY FEBRUARY 2nd, PEOPLE ACROSS THE COUNTRY ANXIOUSLY AWAIT THE GROUNDHOG’S WEATHER FORECAST. SHOULD THE GROUNDHOG SEE HIS SHADOW, IT IS SIX MORE WEEKS OF WINTER. IF THE SHADOW GOES UNSEEN, SPRING WILL ARRIVE AHEAD OF SCHEDULE. For some, Groundhog Day is the only time a person actually lays eyes on the animal doing the prognosticating. But there’s more to groundhogs than their ability to forecast the weather. Groundhogs do little in that burrow during their winter rest. They go into profound hibernation, where their metabolic rates and their body temperatures drop considerably. Many groundhogs begin to come out of hibernation naturally around early- to mid-February. The ones that make it on television for Groundhog Day may get an earlier wake-up call. The scientific name of the groundhog is marmota monax. The animal is also known as a woodchuck and it’s closely related to squirrels and actually can climb trees and swim. Groundhogs are herbivores, mostly feeding on whatever plant material they can find. Because they like crops, many farmers view them as pests. On occasion, groundhogs will scavenge for and eat insects. The burrows made by the animals have several chambers and different entrances and exits. It may be challenging to POST UPTOWN DALLAS / MARCH 2013 THE IDLE RICH PUB find a groundhog’s entry point to your yard as a result. On average, a groundhog will live between three to six years in the wild. In captivity, a groundhog can live to around the age of ten. A wildlife biologist once measured the inside volume of a typical woodchuck burrow. It was estimated that if the hole was filled with wood shavings instead of dirt, that woodchuck could chuck about 700 pounds’ worth of wood. Groundhogs are often mistaken for other animals. In fact, the “gopher” that was seen in the film “Caddyshack” was actually a groundhog. A groundhog can produce a high-pierced whistle when frightened, which has earned it the nickname “whistlepig.” Its fur is not particularly thick or warm, so the animal has never really been prized for its coat for clothing. © metro creative Kick-off the tournaments with Post Uptown Dallas!
