CDC Injury Research Agenda Overview Jane Mitchko, MEd Deputy Director Health Communication Science Office NCIPC, CDC February 24, 2009 Research Agenda Background • Original research agenda published in 2002 • Guided research from 2002-2007 • Revision process initiated in 2007 Revision of CDC Research Agenda • Determined scope of revision (modest) • Activities to make this determination: – Discussion with Internal SME’s – Review of Intramural/extramural research funding and accomplishments – CDC Research Guide, HP2010 objectives Revision of Research Agenda • Initial revision of Agenda by NCIPC • Solicited additional input from external stakeholders Examples of Changes • 10 year time period, 2009-2018 • Separate chapters for child maltreatment and traumatic brain injury • Increased emphasis on: – All levels of the socioeconomic model – Evaluation research – Cost studies – Dissemination/translation research Research Priority Topics • Injury response – Acute injury care – Traumatic brain injury • Unintentional injury prevention – Home and community – Sports, recreation and exercise – Transportation Research Priority Topics – cont’d • Violence prevention – Child maltreatment – Sexual and intimate partner violence – Suicidal behavior – Youth violence Example of topic, priority, and research questions Topic Preventing injuries at home and in the community. Priority Evaluate strategies for widespread dissemination and implementation of effective interventions to reduce injuries at home and in the community. Research Questions 1.What are the barriers to disseminating effective home injury prevention programs among indigent urban populations? 2.How can effective community smoke alarm installation programs be extended inexpensively to broad populations?
