– Rachel Joy Scott by Mrs. Ten Hoeve Groveport Madison High School CRUISER GAZET TE “I have this theory that if one person will go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same.” Rachel's Challenge took GMHS by storm on February 4 when the entire student body as well the community had the opportunity to listen to Rachel Scott's inspirational message of hope and her family's challenge to start a chain reaction of kindness. Ending bullying is the program’s goal. Rachel was killed at her high school in Columbine, Colorado during one of the most infamous school shooting in the United States “Thanks to all of the students, staff and community partners for making this event an enormous success,” said guidance counselor and event organizer Karen Talone. Staff and students can help support this movement by embracing Rachel's challenges everyday: Volume 1, Issue 4 DECEMBER ‘12-JANUARY’13 In this issue: LeaderSpark 8 Through the Looking Glass 9 5 Poetry 9 6 February Movies 10 Anime Club 3 Cruiser Basketball 4 Wrestling Students of the Month MISSION ENSIGN GMHS Student Council continues its commitment to raising money for Ms. Ensign through Mission Ensign. THOMAS’ TIME Groveport Madison High School with the dedication of Mrs. Tolone successfully hosted Rachel’s Challenge. I can say without doubt that it was one of the best days of my career. We had two assemblies with over 600 kids in each, who performed extremely well. I was fortunate enough to participate with 100 students and 10 staff members in leadership training after the assembly, and I heard 15 students tell their stories. I was moved by the courage, the experiences, and the attentive 2 audience. I am proud and privileged to work with so many great kids and staff members. From the dedication to Mission Ensign to the newly formed groups of kids ready to make a difference and refusing to be labeled as average, we have developed a wonderful school community. Rachel has challenged us, and I am ready to meet the challenge,. Are you? Winter Homecoming by Amber Nunez Predicted to be a blast, the Winter Homecoming Dance will focus on the sweetheart theme. Organizers encourage everyone to bring their sweethearts or just go with friends. "I absolutely loved going to Winter Formal last year. I went with a big group of friends, and we all danced the whole night! " exclaimed senior Amy Castle. Others agree that last year was a success and look forward to this year’s dance. The theme last year was masquerade. Each year winter homecoming king and court are honored. Senior Trevor Seibel was the 2012 King. "Last year's dance was a great success. Every year we've added more people to the fun. We hope to see even more people this year.," said Mrs. DelGuzzo, social studies teacher and Student Council advisor in charge of Winter Homecoming. Tickets are now on sale for $10 in room 113 and during lunch periods in the cafeteria February 11-15. Want to bring someone from another school? Guest forms are on the bulletin board. The dance is Saturday, February 16 in the school gym from 7-10 p.m. DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES? ANIME CLUB by Thomas Workman Hit television show Minute to Win It is coming to the high school…..well, not exactly but a similar competition really is. Based on contestants completing random challenges in less than 60 seconds, the GMHS version is called “Classroom Olympics.” Student Council wants students to be part of the fun and to show their skills. So, how do students get involved? Create a team of five, collect $10 then register the team. The exact date will be announced sometime in February. Questions should be directed to seniors Amy Castle or Thomas Workman. FUN was goal of the following GMHS students at OHAYOCON: Shirley Tang, Tewans Smiley, Stephanie Thomas, Kayla Kirk, Stormy Bain, and Julie Bain. OHAYOCON, an annual Anime convention, was a hit with the members of GMHS Anime Club. Seniors Thang Tran, Anthony Curry and Billy Wetzel said what made it exciting was hanging out with friends, but they also liked seeing attendees in “cool costumes,” explained Curry. The vendors sold everything from masks to videos to props. 3 SPORTS LADY CRUISERS BASKETBALL The Lady Cruisers racked up another win, defeating the Franklin Heights Lady Falcons 53-48 February 2. Senior Brittany Morgan led all scorers with 20 points and added 8 steals and 3 blocks to the record books. Freshman Jordan Walton chipped in 12 points. On February 1, the Lady Cruisers played tough against the top ten ranked Newark Lady Wildcats. The team was inspired to play hard during their Mission Ensign game, which honored teacher Kris Ensign. The game festivities raised over $400. Morgan chipped in 12 points, 5 re- bounds, and 1 steal. Senior Arkeysha Williams added 6 points and 3 rebounds and junior Hayley McKinley recorded 4 points, 4 rebounds and 2 blocks. The Lady Cruisers close the regular season with two home games and on the road against Pickerington Central on Friday. February 6 the Lady Cruisers honored seniors Williams and Morgan. Morgan has averaged 11.4 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals and 1 assist per game this season while Williams is averaging 5 points, 3 assists and 3 steals per game. The Lady Cruisers will host the first round tournament game vs. Gahanna Lincoln on Saturday, February 16 at 2 p.m. TRACK & FIELD Interested in participating in track & field? The team won against Lancaster 57-50 in a game that was decided on the line during the last minute. The leading scorer were Dareyl Hamlet with 14 points. Mark Johnson-Reed scored 13 points and Tyus Ferguson chipped in 12 points. On January 29, the boys held a Mission Ensign night. The Spirit Club painted themselves, held life-saved faces and the pep band inspired the crowd to get into the game. Approximately $400 was raised during the game. The boys will play Westerville South in the first round of the tournament. 4 COMMIT TO COLLEGES Three senior football players participated in national signing day last week. Durrell Wood committed to play football at Ohio University. Dawuane Smoot committed to play at the University of Illinois. Ben Adkins committed to play at the University of Findlay. SPORTS CRUISERS WRESTLING In addition the Cruisers also have juniors Shakur Laney and Malcolm Solack who are leading the way. Laney is currently 24-4 and won two tournaments in January; the Grandview Heights Tournament as well as the Kevin Cleveland Memorial Tournament were hosted by Dublin Scioto. “Shakur’s ability to learn and improve seemingly every day in practice is what is setting him apart. He truly is a student of the sport,” coach Niemann said of his wrestler. As for the possibility of Shakur qualifying for the state tournament, Coach Niemann exclaimed, “Most definitely.” The Groveport Madison Wrestling Cruisers have had a productive season. Over the last four weeks, the Wrestling Cruisers took part in three tournaments, participated in league matches and even wrestled in the inaugural State Duals. “Overall I think it was an exciting month for us,” coach Niemann recalled. “The OCC (Ohio Capital Conference) is laden with talent, and the OCC-Ohio has its share of strong teams.” Overall, the Cruisers are 1-5 in OCC competition this season and had a dual at Lancaster on February 7. Solack has also done quite well for himself, recently placing third at Groveport’s Cruiser Invitational. “Having three wrestlers place at a tournament of that caliber says something about all three wrestlers: Laney, third, Lovings, sixth, and Solack, third. And for Malcolm to beat a returning district qualifier the way he did, just shows he can succeed, even as a sophomore,” said the coach. “We knew both Pickeringtons would be strong. They have been at the top of the OCC-Ohio for a number of years now,” coach Niemann said of the conference. “But as for Gahanna, Grove City, and Reynoldsburg, I thought we competed well, but in the end were over-powered.” Although the team lost those duals, Coach Niemann said he sensed a few positives from the matches. Looking ahead, the Cruisers traveled to Lancaster on February 7 to round up league action. After that, the grapplers will not compete until the first leg of the state tournament process - the sectional tournament - on February 16 at Pickerington North. Wrestlers finishing in the top four at sectionals will continue on to the district tournament, wrestled at Hilliard Darby High School on February 22 and 23. The top four of the district tournament qualify for the state tournament, “Our senior night was a terrific environment for a dual meet,” said the coach. Senior Night was January 31 and was part of the OCC-Ohio dual with Reynoldsburg. “Certainly a highlight for the evening was the way our seniors wrestled. Joey (Jewell) dominated his opponent, winning 9-0, and Sam (Lovings) won in dramatic fashion, holding on for the victory! The crowd was really into the matches and even made it quite difficult to communicate to our wrestlers, even though they were standing a few feet away.” 5 November Teacher of the Month Mrs. Blayne Garsky Student of the Month Senior: Amy Castle Hobbies: Softball, Soccer, Spending time with loved ones Favorite Subject: English Quote: ‘Those who saw in tears will reap with songs of joy.” Psalms 126:5 English teacher Blayne Garsky has many passions, teaching being at the top of the list. “I am so honored to be teacher of the month. I love watching my students grow academically and socially...This is truly my dream job and my students make it what it .I thank all of you for being you, for taking chances, for stepping out of your comfort zones, for challenging each other for the daily row competitions, and for opening your minds to a world of imagination found within the pages of a novel, she said.” Although this Capital University alumna thought she would never teach high school, she “never wants to leave!” She really appreciates having Mrs. Caporuscio as a co-teacher and working with Mr. Altman. Reading is another joy for this Pickerington North High School graduate. Her mother, her inspiration, started reading her The Unicorn Chronicles as a child. Then Mrs. Garsky continued with the other books in the series as well as the most recent installment in 2011. These stories remind her of another of Mrs. Garsky’s loves—showing horses. “I received my first horse when I was 19. I have three horses now,” she said. “Riding competitions are a great way for schooling. It gives me the opportunity to show others how my horses are progressing in their training with me.” The highlight of her work with her horses was getting a saddle on Perry. “To see where he started off and where he is now is just amazing. I love him with all my heart. He loves to grab my zipper and zip it up and down very quickly with his teeth. He also has grabbed my hat with this teeth and taken it off my head! I cannot even describe the connection and love I have with my horses. I would not be the same person if I did not have them.” Her love of animals extends to her Australian Shepherd named Nevada, a Chihuahua named Toby, and a Himalayan cat named Saphira. Mrs. Garsky also shows her creativity through her photography business, taking pictures of pets and senior portraits. Her hometown of Lorain, Ohio commissioned her to work her high school students where she was teaching to create a mural commemorating the town. “This mural depicted all of the iconic images from our town into one ginormous mural. I could sense the pride of the community as they passed by and honked their horns at us in appreciation. My uncle just today posted a picture of it on Facebook and it still looks great,” said Mrs. Patterson. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Ohio University, which is where she discovered her love of painting, it is not surprising that the mural was a success. Her inspiration is the Mexican muralists. “Their body of work is inspirational because they used their artwork as a form of social activism; a catalyst for change. The Mexican Muralists served as the voice of the people through the use of large scale murals,” explained Mrs. Patterson. This connection is also one of heritage. “I would love to go to Mexico and see some of their works in person. I am Mexican American. My grandparents on both sides of the family were all from Mexico,” said Mrs. Patterson. Always on the outlook for exciting projects to bring into the classroom. This mother of a seven-year-old daughter learned about a new art process from fellow GMHS teacher Susan Summers. “It’s a way to draw that involved the use of patterns. Students of all artistic levels can use this method and be successful! Thanks to Mrs. Summers” said Mrs. Patterson. Along with art teacher Helen Slater, who she enjoys working with and bounces ideas off of, Mrs. Patterson has taken on an empty, unused hallway bulletin board and turned it into a display for the winners of a monthly art contest. All the winning pieces will be shown at the upcoming district art show in March as well as the Southeast Branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library art show in April. This proves that Mrs. Patterson’s philosophy that “two heads are better that one” is true. In the fall, Team Evan, consisting of sophomores Lexi Lindic and Harris Herzberg and freshman Amber Nunez, started off by learning how to plan a group project and strategies to work with people effectively. The group then looked at different organizations to pair up with to do a community service project. Team Evan selected Nellie’s Catwalk 4 Kids, an organization that assists families who have children with pediatric cancer. The group connected with a family who has a son diagnosed with terminal cancer. His name is Evan and is a triplet who also has a sister. The team brainstormed ideas on how to raise money to help Evan’s family and decided to do a "Penny Wars" at Middle Schools North and South. The second step was to set up a meeting with the principals and counselors at the schools to talk about the project idea. After the team members received permission for the "Penny Wars" and set up the dates to begin the project, they collected boxes, made handouts for the teachers and then went to the school to make announcements about the project. They went back a week later to collect the loose change and take the $528.18 to the bank for Evan’s family expenses, which greatly surpassed the goal of $400. The team would like to thank Middle Schools South and North's students and staff and also others who donated to help fulfill the goal. “We would also like to thank Nellie’s Catwalk 4 Kids for helping us find a family to sponsor. And lastly we would like to thank the LeaderSpark program facilitators for helping us gain such a great experience and helping us learn to be leaders,” said the team members. DECA COMPETITION The Marketing/Logistics class at Groveport Madison High School recently participated in the DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) competition with impressive results. those 320 students, 40 were from Groveport Madison High School. The students competed in 18 events, ranging from Apparel & Accessories Marketing to Travel and Tourism. The competition begins with the 100 question multiple-choice test. Students are then given a scenario dealing with his/her chosen event. Students have ten minutes to read and develop a creative solution to the scenario. Afterwards, students present their solutions through a role-play exercise before the judges. The state competition will take place at the Hyatt Downtown on Saturday, March 16.Senior Katie Fellure said, “DECA is a good way to learn business techniques. I learned how to be more outspoken and confident. Participating in DECA will definitely help me as I enter college next fall.” Eleven students from Groveport Madison High School are moving on to the State DECA in March. Drew Mantle and Amy Castle dominated their events in Business Management and Hotel Management respectively with a first place finish, which consists of a 100 question multiple-choice test and analyzing a company’s profitability based on their financial statements and customer service. Seniors Thomas Workman and Joey Jewell placed second in the Sports and Entertainment Management Team event. This moves them forward to the state competition. Matt Ader is also state bound with his second place finish in Marketing Management. Other state qualifiers are Harley Garvin, Sequoia Dobbins, Heather Miller, Trent Kopala, Ally Scurlock, and Haley McKinley. Groveport Madison had a total of 24 students finish in the top 5 of their respective events. The Marketing/Logistics Program operates Cruiser Corner, a school based store in the commons area of Groveport Madison High School. The program is looking for good students interested in marketing and developing business entrepreneurial skills. Interested sophomores should contact his/her guidance counselor or Mr. Robinson. Participating students agree. “I feel its going great and we’re really starting to get to know each other,” said Tyler Lewis. Students meet every two weeks to enjoy an array of activities, including parties, competitions, and sports activities. For example, during the Christmas party, not only were there plenty of treats but they had a gingerbread house making contest. The group usually tries to do activities related to their next activity. Before attending a GMHS basketball game, the students played basketball jeopardy to brush up on the rules of the game. Recently, they also went bowling. Senior Cassidy Tigner really loves networking: “I love school networking. It’s always so much fun. We always play tons of games and sometimes we even do activities outside of school. This program was made so that special needs students can interact with the regular students more. I love the fact that this program was made by a fellow student, Tyler Lewis. Anyone can join after school networking , so come have fun with us!” Another senior, Katie Fellure, also finds the organization rewarding: “After school networking is so much fun! I get to meet new people and learn many new things. We do things not only in school but after school too. It’s a good way to learn how to be interactive with everyone.” Any student interested in joining should see Mrs. Fenner in room 118.
