2012 BOARD OF DIRECTORS
By Bob Clifford, President/CEO CRCC
Executive Committee
What a unique tourism community we have. I know of
no other location that can offer one of the top beaches
in the world, world class amateur and professional
sporting venues, wide ranging accommodations from
five-star hotels to economical luxury lodging and
home to a world renowned movie star, ‘Winter the Dolphin’. We are truly
open for business. Whether it be a family vacation, a weekend get-a-way,
spring training with the Phillies, minor league baseball - Florida state-league
style, amateur sport tournaments or great water activities from ECO Tours,
snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, parasailing or just taking a swim in the
beautiful blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico, you will find it here. Tourism is
the economic engine that drives our economy. Over the past 4 months we
have had record bed tax collections. The average room rates and occupancy
numbers are rising throughout the County.

There are numerous construction projects underway on Clearwater Beach,
including a new hotel, several new restaurants and beautiful shops. Events on
the beach and mainland are increasing in number and size. What does this
mean to the non-tourist businesses in our area? It means dollars are coming
from outside of our areas which are being spent for goods and services. The
businesses providing these tourism related goods and services spend those
dollars with our Chamber members for such things as supplies, insurance,
building materials, computers, food, autos, trucks, healthcare, printing etc.
The Clearwater Regional Chamber of Commerce is fully committed to our
tourism partners. For over 90 years we have been a partner supporting those
that engage in creating the best tourism experience available. The landscape
has changed, but the mission has not.

We have a
wonderful
organization
right here in
Clearwater
that changes
lives every day!
Eckerd (formerly Eckerd Youth
Alternatives) has been a source
of help and hope for 100,000+
children and families since its
founding by Jack and Ruth Eckerd
in 1968. Based in Clearwater,
Eckerd serves as the lead agency for
child welfare in Pinellas and Pasco
counties, ensuring the safety, wellbeing and permanency of more than
3100 of our area’s most vulnerable
children
each day.
Starting July
1st, Eckerd
will also
become the
lead agency
for child
welfare in
Hillsborough
County, and they have nearly
40 other programs nationwide
that give much-needed second
chances to children and families.
Recently, Eckerd underwent a
massive rebranding to keep up
with the changing times, but it still
maintains Jack Eckerd’s original
vision of ensuring each child
has the opportunity to succeed.
Today, Eckerd has the deepest and
broadest continuum of care of any
youth and family service provider
nationwide.
To learn more about Eckerd
and how you can help, go to
www.eckerd.org.
We’re in the business of helping our clients
achieve results from their marketing efforts. Our time-tested
and proven services are an affordable way to help businesses
meet and exceed their sales goals!

This year, the Ms. Clearwater Award was given to Mrs.
Shirley Long. Mrs. Long is the quintessential community
volunteer, sharing her time, talent and treasure to
improve the quality of life in our community. A native
of Boston, she came to Florida over forty years ago. In
her longtime career as a banking executive at Gulf to Bay
Bank & Trust in Clearwater, she became acutely aware of
the needs of her community. She and her late husband
Harris E. “Zip” Long, stepped forward with the lead gift
for what is now the Long Center recreational complex on
Belcher.

2011 winner Mrs. Cantonis
In addition to her expanded role over the years with
the Long Center, she has been deeply engaged with
the UPARC Foundation, encouraging the foundation
to flourish in their new home at the Long Center. As
a member of the Board of the Morton Plant Mease
Foundation, she is chairing the Spirituality and Healing
Committee and has underwritten the Care Channel which
provides soothing images and music on the televisions
in every patient room. On the board of The Florida
Orchestra, she has been a catalyst in increasing support
from the North Suncoast audience.
When Shirley is not working tirelessly to make life
better for all of us, she can be found on the golf course at
Belleair Country Club. The mother of two twin daughters,
her children and grandchildren continue to be her
inspiration for all she is and all she does. Shirley leads
by example, generously and graciously. She shares her
financial expertise, her passion to make a difference in the

She is respected, admired and loved by all who know her.
