Center
Known as the KOH Library, the Library will receive its
advanced accreditation from the Association of Jewish
Libraries at their annual June 17th-20th.
The advanced accreditation is the highest recognition and
most respected in the world of Jewish Libraries. Why is it
important for our library to be accredited? Receiving accreditation means that our library is meeting the high
standards set by AJL; it means that the librarian is qualified and able to manage an up-to-date collection; it signifies that we know the community which we serve and that
we take pride in serving that community.
The AJL Accreditation also provides:
Credibility to the fact that we maintain a professional
library, and thus adds value to the institution as a
whole;
An opportunity to evaluate our policies and procedures and to review how well we run the library and
meet the needs of our patrons;
An effective tool for publicizing our library and its
activities.
The KOH Library contains almost 5,000 volumes spanning wide areas of Judaic interest, including Bible studies,
Jewish observance and practice, the Holocaust, Israel, and
Jewish communities and history from around the world.
There is also a wide variety of Jewish themed magazines,
DVD’s and fiction books available.
The KOH facility is more than a Library, we are a Cultural Center as well. Part of our mission is to support and
promote adult education and cultural programs not only

for synagogues, but the entire Sacramento region as well.
Programming includes the ongoing Jews of the World
events and the Martin London Lifelong Learning Lecture
Series. Lecture topics have ranged from Jews of the Civil
War to current events in the Middle East.
We offer a monthly Fiction Book Club and Author Series,
which centers on the contributions of Jewish authors to the
literary world. We have had authors come in to discuss
their books, answer questions and autograph their books.
We have a monthly Film Club, which focuses on Jewish
related films made by Jews. We also have an Artist Series
that features the work of Jewish artists and Jewish related
subjects. We have had the privilege of showing the work
of numerous artists as well as hearing from the artists
themselves in a lecture and Q&A format. Our Chess Club
meets monthly to share and teach the joy of chess.
There is now an online Catalog for easy access from your
home or office, located at www.kohlcc.org. To obtain a
KOH Library account, call (916) 485-4143. Once you
have your library account, you can reserve items online
and pick up them up at your convenience!

Reflections from the President

At the beginning of the Amidah,
there is a seasonal insertion that
one says at the beginning of Fall
until the end of Spring: Masheev
Ha’Ruach oo’Moreed HaGashem,
translated means “may the wind blow and the rain fall.”
When I recite the Amidah, I’m amazed that no matter
what the almanac may say, this insertion is always timely.
And so, as the season turns to pleasant thoughts of being
outdoors and confirming those summer plans, so too
does the Mosaic Law Board of Trustees turn its attention
to being outdoors. No, we won’t be having our monthly
board meetings outside, but we will be having our annual
fundraiser outside – the 1st Annual Mosaic Law Best
Ball Tournament at Teal Bend Golf Course on Monday, June 4th.
For those of you with businesses who want to support
the shul, this would be an excellent opportunity for your
company to consider a sponsorship of a hole. Prices are
reasonable and the visibility you would get is priceless.
Higher dollar sponsorships also provide for either two or
four players to compete in the tournament.

The shul’s operating budget is such that without fundraisers, we certainly won’t be able to pay our bills. The
board has looked at different events, venues and opportunities to bring in the needed money and many of us felt
that a golf tournament would be a pleasant and fruitful
change of pace. Yes, the economy is still tight and yes,
corporate donations are down, but why not try something
that hasn’t been done for a while? I can only hope that
this will be the first of many golf tournaments that the
synagogue will host and that tons of goodwill, camaraderie and, yes, money will be generated from the event.
If you’d like to assist with procuring sponsorships or are
interested in sponsoring a hole, please contact Alex

help out with logistics and/or “day of” volunteering,
please contact Dan Ott at daniel.ott@comcast.net, and if
you have a foursome – or two foursomes – you’d like to
get together for that day, feel free to pick up a flyer in
the foyer, the table in the education building, or look for
it on the shul’s website.
I can guarantee a good time will be had by all!
What? You’re retired now and don’t have a business?

make a day of it with your friends out at the course.
We’re serving a light breakfast and a wonderful lunch,
coupled with a fun raffle drawing, making the afternoon
pass much too quickly. And if you don’t golf but want to

Torah Fund Luncheon - Sunday,
May 6th at 11am
Each year we have a luncheon honoring one or two remarkable women
from our congregation, the proceeds which go toward
the Torah Fund. What is the Torah Fund, you ask? The
Torah Fund is an organization of women ensuring Conservative/Masorti Jewish Education sponsored by the
Women’s League for Conservative Judaism. This campaign seeks to ensure our legacy to future generations of
Conservative Jews by providing education for: Rabbis,
Cantors, Educators and Administrators for Day Schools
and Synagogue Schools, Synagogue Administrators,
Social Workers, Scholars, Lay Leaders and Researchers.
This Year, our theme is Hiddur Mitzvah. This concept
of embellishing a mitzvah through aesthetics is attributed to a midrash (Mekhilta de Rabbi Ishmael) on a verse
in the Song of the Sea: “This is my G-d and I will glorify
Him” (Exodus 15:2). With enhancement and adornment,
the mitzvah appeal to the senses and the heart, and sacred objects and activities become even more precious.
The Pomegranate imagery of this
year’s Torah Fund Pin has multilayered meaning. In addition to being beautiful, pomegranates
(rimmonim) are one of the bountiful
fruits of the Land of Israel. Rimmonim is also the term used for the
silver adornments (finials) on the
atzei chaim (Torah rollers) of the Sefer Torah (Torah
scroll); just a little something extra that has adorned our
Land, our Torah, our rituals and mitzvoth for centuries,
and added meaning to our lives. May this year of Torah
Fund activities and events be a blessing to one and all.
At this year’s Torah Fund Luncheon, we will have a special presentation in remembrance of Shirley Dubnick,
z”l, whom we lost last year. Her work founding the Solomon Dubnick Gallery and Sacramento’s Second Saturday Art Walk made an incredible imprint on our community.
This year we are proud to honor Marcy Friedman as
our Woman of Achievement, in gratitude for the four
decades she has spent making MLC and the greater Sacramento region a showcase of beauty and art. This will

California Jewish Cemeteries - Robinn Magid
Bay Area genealogist Robinn Magid will present
a survey of California's many Jewish cemeteries
and the challenges of doing research in these locations. The presentation will include cemeteries
ranging from the sparse pioneer Gold Rush cemeteries to those in the City of Colma, "where
more residents are below ground than above it."
Robinn will also talk about Jewish Hollywood
and its resting places.

Robinn is a longtime member of the San Francisco Bay Area Jewish Genealogical Society and a
board member of JRI-Poland. She presented this
talk at the 2010 international conference in Los
Angeles, and spoke to the Sacramento genealogy group last year on her
recent research trip to Poland.

Jerusalem - The Undivided Capital of Israel with
George Rooks and Ed Rabin - George Rooks and Ed
Rabin will speak on Jerusalem's fascinating & complicated
history and archeology. Jerusalem is Judaism's holiest city,
but is also considered sacred to Christians and Muslims.
Governed for a thousand years by Judeans and continuously inhabited for 300 years by Jews, Jerusalem was subsequently conquered by a variety of nations. Most have left
their mark architecturally, spiritually, demographically or
politically. This program will trace the history of Jerusalem from its ancient past to its vibrant and sometimes contentious present. It focuses on the city's archaeological
treasures and also explores Jerusalem's Israeli sovereignty
and the importance of the city being undivided. IM Chair
George Rooks will discuss the geographical and archeological aspects of Jerusalem: Ed Rabin will cover the international legal ramifications. No fee - there is a $5 suggested donation. Open to the community.

GUEST AUTHOR! Michael David Lukas will be discussing his book, "The Oracle of Stambul" as a part of the
KOH Fiction Book Club. "The Oracle of Stambul" was a
finalist for the NCIBA Book of the Year Award and the
California Book Award. Michael David Lukas has been a
Fulbright Scholar in Turkey, a night-shirt proofreader in
Tel Aviv, and a waiter at the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference in Vermont. A graduate of Brown University and the
University of Maryland, his writing has appeared in VQR,
Slate, National Geographic Traveler, and Georgia Review.
He has received scholarships from the National Endowment for the Arts, New York State Summer-Writers’ Institute, and Elizabeth George Foundation. When he isn’t
writing, he teaches creative writing to third- and fourthgraders. Books will be offered for sale. Open to the public.

KOH Film Club presents "The Human Resources Manager." This award winning Israeli film follows the story of an
unhappy Human Resources Manager of Jerusalem's largest bakery. When one of his employees, a foreign worker,
is killed in a suicide bombing, the bakery is accused of
indifference, and the HR manager is sent to the victim's
hometown in Romania to make amends. Far from home,
on a mission to honor a woman he didn't even know but
has somehow grown to admire, he fights to regain his
company's reputation - and possibly his own humanity.
This film succeeds in making you laugh as often as it elicits tears. Filmed in Hebrew with English and Romanian
subtitles. Hillel Damron will lead a discussion after the

Mosaic Law will be hosting a special lunch on Shabbat,
May 19th, honoring the founders of the KOH Library and
Cultural Center for their outstanding contributions to the
shul and community-at-large.

attend all board meetings and field problems as they may
arise.
Hy Kashenberg, Michael and Millie Hayward, and the late
Bill and Shola Ostrow will be recognized for their vision
and generosity in the creation of what is referred to as “the
crown jewel” of Mosaic Law.
Jolie Ostrow Baron, daughter of the late Bill and Shola
Ostrow, is the chief librarian. Under her supervision, the
library has achieved the coveted Advanced Accreditation
Certification by the Association of Jewish Libraries. Jolie
has been the catalyst in obtaining a collection of over
2,000 Judaic books, a legacy of the library of the late Dr.
Gordon Weiner. In fact, a representative of the Association of Jewish Libraries stated: “I was most impressed by
the upgrading of the collection, your wonderful programming, and especially by the fact that the staff is entirely all
volunteers.”
The beautiful library has been the venue for many lectures,
including the Martin London Lecture Series, as well as for
movies and art exhibits, and provides the home for the
Holocaust Education Program, spearheaded by Elizabeth
Igra, chair of the Central Valley Holocaust Education Network.
The success of the facility can be largely attributed to an
amazing cadre of dedicated volunteers.
Please join us at Shabbat services and lunch, May 19th, in
honor of these very special people.

Fridays at 5:45pm - Enhanced Kabbalat Shabbat Service - There are a few English enhancements to this weekly service along with a 10 minute discussion or sermonette.
Many people come to this service only when they want to
say Kaddish for a loved one. Particularly to those of you
who don't regularly come on Shabbat morning, please consider adding this enhanced service to your weekly routine.
Attendance has the potential to help you do something
good for both yourself and others. A similar, later service

April 2012
The Membership Team is developing a new membership packet. They
will be matching up families who
have either had a bar/bat mitzvah in
the past 5 years, or who have become
new members in the past 5 years (or
both), as those have been identified as
the most "at risk" groups. Collection
calls need to be made. **The Membership Team is need of individuals to
reach out to new members by inviting
them to Shabbat dinners or otherwise
"buddying up" with them. If you are
interested, please contact Randy Pollack (see the Directory).
The Education Team reported that
registrations have gone out for next
year's religious school and youth
group programs. A new USY advisor
has been hired.USY chapter elections
will be on June 3rd. On May 6th
there will be a Maccabiah program in
honor of Israel Independence day.
The end-of-year BBQ and graduation
ceremony will be held on Sunday,
May 20th. Thank you to Roger
Cochran and the Men's Club for hosting the BBQ. Also, thank you to the
Men's Club for providing the teacher
gifts this year.
We have a full Adult Education calendar for April and May. Baryohay
Davidoff will be the featured speaker
in the next two months, and he is also
setting up a computer in the KOH
Library and Cultural Center that will
broadcast programs from a museum
in Israel. (See flyers for more details).
In September we hope to offer a
course through the Renaissance Society at CSUS, which is a lifelong
learners program. Planning for next
year has begun, and we hope to have
a catalog of classes ready for the High
Holidays. Feedback from the membership via outreach calls has been
valuable. The next Education Team
meeting is Sunday, May 6th, at 10:30
in the Ehrenkrantz library.
The Program Team says save the
date--Monday, June 4th, Mosaic
Law's "Best Ball Golf Tournament" at
Teal Bend golf course! We need 144
golfers, and also need sponsors for
holes, raffle prizes, etc. The tournament will start at 8am, wrap up by
2pm after a delicious lunch. Keep
your eyes peeled for the flyer. Bring a
foursome, and help our synagogue
raise $30,000! We are slightly ahead
in our fundraising goal for this year
thanks to the Women's Network
"Shopping, The Musical" and the Purim gala hosted by the Harounis.
The Women's Network will have the
Torah Fund brunch is May 6th from
11-2, honoring our Woman of
Achievement Marcy Friedman. There
will also be a tribute to Shirley Dubnick for her contributions to the arts.
The Women's Network has been
working hard with the gift shop, and
continues to support our congregation
through its shiva committee (special
recognition to Judy Persin, Arlene
Pearl, and Janie Gumpert).
The Men's Club is in the middle of
planning the next 6 months. They are
sponsoring the religious school BBQ
and are providing teacher gifts. They
will be conducting a membership
drive.
The Budget is on target through
April. (See Program Team report).
Statements should be going out on a
monthly basis to help with income.
Our summer months are typically our
leanest.
The Center at Twenty Three Hundred has submitted a proposal to the
county for a construction permit to
complete the "prep" area, thanks to an
anonymous donor. The final, approved permit should be issued within
the next 7-10 days, after which construction will be scheduled so as not
to interfere with pre-booked events in
the building. The budget for the rest

of 2012 is positive; bookings continue
to increase month by month. It is projected that the Center budget will continue to be in the black (positive) for
2013 even without any more support
from the MLC Foundation, as the
three year start-up grant ends this
June. There was discussion in Executive Session regarding changes in
roles and responsibilities for the Center personnel that will publicized at a
later date.
The Bylaws will be revised in time
for the Annual Meeting to bring one
or two areas into compliance, as the
laws have changed since the last Bylaw revision. (Specifically related to
who counts in a quorum and has voting privileges at Board meetings).
Frank Gumpert will chair the committee.
New Business included discussion
about transparency. The membership
should know that all Mosaic Law
Board meetings are open to the membership. Meetings generally fall on
the 2nd Wednesday of every month,
starting at 7pm. Meeting dates are
publicized in the monthly Scroll as
well as on the on-line calendar. Anyone who has "new business" should
first discuss with the President in order to see how it will fit on the agenda
that month.
The May meeting of the Board of
Trustees will be on Wednesday, May
9th, at 7pm in the Youth Lounge.
The Mosaic Law Board of Trustees
usually meets the second Wednesday
of the month at 7:00pm in the Youth
Lounge. Meetings are open to the
congregation except when in executive session.

Shavuot in the Kitchen - First Fruits and Milk & Honey
This year Shavuot begins in the
evening of Saturday, May 26 and
ends in the evening of Monday,
May 28. This month I’m sharing
two new recipes for celebrating
the dual bases for the holiday: the harvest and the giving of
the Torah. The former comes in the form of a hearty soup
featuring barley, which is a winter crop whose harvest we
highlight. As the Torah is often associated with references
to milk and honey, dairy products are prominent on tables
during Shavuot. What better way to appreciate this sensory
comparison than to prepare cheese from scratch? The
homemade ricotta can be used by itself or as an ingredient
in recipes that call for commercial ricotta. Blintzes are especially popular for Shavuot because when served side-byside on a plate they resemble the tablets of the law that
Moses brought down from Mt. Sinai.

Sweet Potato, Chicken, and Barley Soup
This recipe is adapted from The New England Soup Factory Cookbook by Marjorie Druker and Clara Silverstein.
Hands-on preparation takes only about 20 minutes, and
you will have a nice one-bowl meal for 5 people. Makes
about 2 ½ qt. soup
1 Tbsp olive oil OR garlic olive oil (available at Trader
Joe’s)
1 large clove garlic, minced (if you haven’t used garlic
oil)
½ large onion, peeled and diced
1 rib celery, diced
2 carrots, peeled and sliced
2 small parsnips, peeled and grated (or diced)
⅝ C pearl barley (1/2 C+ 2 TBSP)
5 C chicken stock (plus additional for serving if soup is
very thick)
1 bay leaf
2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into ¾ “ chunks
1 ½ C chopped, cooked chicken (or more if you like)
3 TBSP chopped fresh dill
½ TBSP balsamic vinegar
Kosher salt & freshly ground black pepper to taste
2 – 3 TBSP chopped flat-leaf parsley–my addition
carrots in the oil for 5 minutes. Add the parsnips, barley,
stock and bay leaf. Bring to a boil, cover and reduce heat.
Simmer for 25 minutes.
Add the sweet potatoes and chicken. Simmer for 25-30
minutes longer, or until sweet potatoes are soft. Discard
the bay leaf. Turn off the heat and add the dill, vinegar,
salt and pepper, adjusting the seasoning to your liking.
Add the parsley and serve at once or cool and refrigerate
or freeze for later use.
If the soup is very thick, you may want to add more
broth—especially if you don’t serve the soup the same
day. I added a whole cup for this recipe. Remember to adjust the seasoning when adding liquid.
Heat the olive oil in a 4 to 6 quart pot over medium-high
heat until it shimmers. Sauté the garlic, onion, celery and

Fresh Homemade Ricotta
This is a surprisingly easy and satisfying recipe to make in
celebration of Shavuot!
I searched for a way really to appreciate the significance
of the “milk and honey” part of the holiday observance by
starting at ground zero: making my own cheese. This recipe by Richard Ferretti of the now- defunct GOURMET
magazine remains on the Internet and was the simplest of
all the versions gleaned from my research. To complete
the experience, serve a simple, perfect dessert of this
creamy cheese drizzled with honey. An optional sprinkle
of cinnamon or the addition of berries are also suggested.
Yields about 2 C cheese
If you want to make a trial ½ C batch of cheese, use the
measurements in parentheses.
2 qts whole milk (2 C)
1 C heavy cream (1/4 C)*
½ tsp salt (big pinch)
3 TBSP fresh lemon juice (2 ¼ tsp)
ring occasionally to prevent scorching. Add the lemon
juice, reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring constantly
until mixture curdles. This will take only a couple of
minutes; the mixture will just look like milk with tiny solid pieces floating in it; you won’t see large curds.
Pour the curdled mixture into the lined strainer and leave
to drain for an hour, or until the cheese left in the cloth is
a consistency that you like. (A smaller amount of cheese
will take a shorter time to drain.) Transfer the ricotta to a
covered container and store in the refrigerator, where it
will keep well for at three days. The protein-rich whey
drained from the curds can be used instead of water in
baking recipes—a dairy version of challah, for example.
The resulting cheese is sweet and creamy. Since I tested it
during Passover, I learned that it is delicious for breakfast
on matzah!

Joe’s or Whole Foods.
Line a large sieve or strainer with fine cheesecloth, place
it over a large bowl and set aside.
Place the milk, cream and salt in a 6-quart heavy pot over
moderate heat. Bring to a boil, watching carefully and stir-

And Linda Makes Ten…
Since my father died last July, I have become one of the
very small cadre of people who are referred to as the regular minyannaires. They enabled me to recite Kaddish and
for that I am very grateful. What began as an obligation
has now become a sacred responsibility that I take very
seriously and will continue after my year is completed. I
readily admit that I was guilty of my participation, or lack
thereof, in the minyans at our synagogue. But even in
death my father continues to teach me about the wisdom
and depth of Judaism and its relevance to my daily life.
The ability to say Kaddish during mourning or on a
yarhzeit is a function of the synagogue that allows Jews to
fulfill a sacred mitzvah. So important is this commandment that Atheists and non-observant Jews also begin to
recite Kaddish at the funeral and then continue throughout
life at the yahrzeit of a loved one. This may seem to be
antithetical to Jewish sensibilities, but Judaism has always
placed doing a mitzvah far more important than understanding or even believing in the meaning of the halachah. That is why this prayer is always transliterated, so
that the knowledge of Hebrew is not an impediment to the
mourner and helps them to feel integrated with his/her
fellow worshippers.
I write this letter for one reason. All too often we have
NO MINYAN. This has denied me and many others who
came just to say Kaddish, the opportunity to fulfill this
commandment. This is not a sign of a healthy congregation. My motivation to drag myself out of bed for the
Monday and Thursday morning minyans, at 7:15am, is
the face of an individual waiting for me to complete the
minyan. All too often I made number ten. Similarly, when
I or a regular davener were unable to attend, there were
nine. The afternoon minyans Monday through Thursday
at 5:45pm also struggle for ten Jews! The Board of Trustees need to consider this to be a high priority that requires their attention, participation and commitment to a
successful resolution of this problem. The membership of
Mosaic Law need to know that whenever they need a
Minyan, there will be a strong and vibrant complement of
Jews to be there for them.

Our synagogue offers short-term counseling with a volunteer professional licensed therapist. Rande Zaretsky, a
licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT), has offered her services to the members of our congregation.
Counseling is a process of confidential discussions with a
trained licensed therapist. With the support of an objective
therapist you can identify and develop alternative coping
skills. Appointments are open to children, teens, adults
and couples of all ages. Rande will have private office
hours on Tuesdays, hours to be arranged. Alternative arrangements may also be available.
A fee to the synagogue of $36 is to be paid at each
session. No one will be turned away because of inability to
afford the fee, but everyone will be expected to pay something.

enter extension 25 to leave a message. Be sure to speak
clearly and slowly, leaving your name and phone number.
