There’s no tougher operating environment than the
commercial marine market in Far North Queensland.
It’s a market where the Yanmar marine diesel brand excels.
It is also the reason behind the Yanmar 6AYM-WGT engines
being specifically selected to power the $5m “Reef Ranger”
a vessel which is set to spend 200 days a year at sea.

Designed by Incat Crowther and built on the Queensland Gold Coast by Marine
Engineering Consultants, ‘Reef Ranger’ is a specialist 24m aluminium catamaran recently
delivered to Queensland National Parks. The vessel is based in Cairns in Far North
Queensland, but has the responsibility for patrolling the vast Great Barrier Reef World
Heritage area, an area roughly the size of Italy or Japan.
With such a focus upon efficiency and
minimal environmental impact, it is significant
that a pair of Yanmar 6AYM-WGT engines and
Yanmar transmission packages were explicitly
selected to power this ground breaking
vessel. The Yanmar 6AYM-WGT is a six inline cylinder engine with a displacement
of 20.39 litres and a rated power output of
911 hp (670kw) at 1938 rpm. This model
Yanmar is noted for its strong performance,
low fuel consumption, low emissions and an
uncomplicated non electronic governor and
injection system.
In addition to the Yanmar engines &
transmission packages Power Equipment Pty
Ltd and their respective supply partners were
proud to be chosen as the preferred supplier
for the diesel generator packages, propeller
shaft seals, main engine crankcase filtration
equipment and electronic controls.
Dual Northern Lights M65C2H/E generator
sets have been installed in the engine room,
the highly regarded PSS shaft seals have been
fitted to the 3.5” diameter propeller shafts and
Walker Engineering combined to supply a
customised closed crankcase AIRSEP system
which was installed onto the main engines
to help ensure a low environmental footprint.
ZF Mather’s Micro Commander 4 station
electronic controls were positioned at
key locations around the vessel to ensure
excellent visibility and precise control by the
skipper during all operation modes. With a
maximum speed of 25 knots and a service
speed of 20 knots, ‘Reef Ranger’ is twice as fast
as its 24 year old predecessor. With modern
Yanmar 6AYM-WGT marine diesel engines in
the engine room, the ‘Reef Ranger’ is more
environmentally friendly and significantly
more cost effective.
As well as being an efficient vessel at sea,
‘Reef Rangers’ environmental credentials are
boosted through the implementation of new
technologies. These include extensive use of
solar panels, high R value insulation, zoned
air conditioning as well as window blinds
and shutters to reduce the impact of the
unforgiving FNQ sun.
The extensive array of solar panels takes
full advantage of modern lithium ion
batteries to reduce the use of diesel power
generation. Both under way and while at
anchor at night, the intelligent control system
combines power from the dual sources
(solar and gen set) to ensure that running
costs are minimised and the Northern Lights
generators can be shut down at night.
Operationally, ‘Reef Ranger’ has a heavy
schedule. Quite apart from the job of
patrolling 348,000 square kilometres of
ocean, the vessel is tasked with duties
which cover environmental issues, zone
compliance, tourism, moorings and fires on
remote islands.
‘Reef Ranger’ can stay at sea for up to 12
weeks, has a cruise range of 2000 nautical
miles and can carry up to 28 people on
board. The vessel has a fuel capacity of 12,000
litres and 4,000 litres of fresh water and is
equipped with two tenders, one being a 5
metre aluminium punt launched from the
upper deck by a deck mounted sea crane and
the second being a high speed RHIB which
is cradled on a highly customised hydraulic
platform on the main deck.
The design of this rather unique platform
allows the RHIB to be launched and retrieved
within 30 seconds in 3 metre seas and at a
service speed of 6 knots, a feature which will
no doubt be appreciated by the crew during
the apprehension of illegal fishers in their
patrol region.
Power Equipment were delighted to have
been associated with Marine Engineering
Consultants, Incat Crowther Design and
the Queensland National Parks project
management team on this world class
patrol vessel. We were very grateful for the
opportunity to demonstrate again the proven
performance of the YANMAR purpose built
marine engine/transmission packages and
the high quality of the support equipment
delivered from our supply partners, Northern
Lights, PSS, Walker Engineering and ZF.

With a length overall of 24m and beam of
8.5m, the ‘Reef Ranger’ has been designed to
have a minimal impact on the environment
that it is protecting. At the centre of this costeffective design is an excellent combination
of functionality and performance. Incat
Crowther has developed a high-volume
workboat hull, a vessel which offers greater
capacity and operational envelope whilst
maintaining excellent fuel economy.
