Fry In an online poll, we asked readers a question: Who is Philadelphia’s business person of the year. The 1,857 voters spoke loud and clear in their endorsement of John A. Fry, president of Drexel University. It’s undeniable that Fry had a big year. Under his watch, Drexel is moving forward with a $170 million, 24-story residential building on Lancaster Avenue and 34th Street in Philadelphia. Fry joined Mayor Michael Nutter on a trade mission to Israel where he helped forge a research deal with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Meanwhile, Drexel’s School of Medicine saw the largest number of applicants of any school in the region. More and more companies seem to be flocking to University City. One PBJ.com commenter summed it up well: “He’s not just serving the University: his work at Drexel is having repercussions across Philadelphia and the John A. Fry whole region. I’m on the Drexel faculty, so I’d probably be more inclined to be biased against any administration, but I’m seeing really good stuff happening under Fry’s leadership. The campus is expanding, we’re tied into the community, our incoming students are incrementally better every year. Fry just launched an initiative that’s going to radically change students’ financial picture, which is the Gordian knot everybody in higher ed has been trying to untie for the last couple of decades … Philadelphia now has two major universities, not just one. Fry as Philly’s person of the year? Hell, yes!” als rn ou 5. Venture capitalists and CEOs said they expect to see big improvements in 2014, such as higher IPO volume for venture-backed companies, a hiring growth at startups and improved returns to limited partners. That is a really complicated question. At the moment the payment system is geared completely in the wrong direction. Everything is piecemeal payment. If you are going to pay us to do piece work we are going to do piece work. Are we going to move from volume to value? Let’s look at Philadelphia. Pick any variable you want. Pick bed utilization per thousands. We are about twoand-a-half-times California’s hospital utilization, and we have been that way since I’ve been at Jefferson (for the past 24 years). So there’s excess capacity here, but if you look at what’s going on in this marketplace we are building new hospitals. So are we ready? The evidence ot r fo l cia er m m co e us The country is trying to move from a fee-for-service system where providers are paid episodically for every test they order and every procedure they perform to a system where we are caring for populations. Are we ready to do that here? That isn’t an easy question. If 85 percent of [a population’s health status] is determined by social determinants and 15 percent is based on what health-care providers do every day, the question is, what role does our industry have in working -N commission-accredited hospitals in a 25-mile radius, but from a population health perspective there’s a lot of room for improvement. als rn Source: CareerCast.com Annual Median Salary $86,960 $79,860 $70,210 $75,400 $97,820 $90,930 $66,160 $55,870 $116,670 $69,870 $34,610 $116,440 ou Biomedical Engineer Physical Therapist Dental Hygienist Occupational Therapist Optometrist Physician Assistant Chiropractor Respiratory Therapist Pharmacist Speech Pathologist Medical Records Technician Podiatrist Bu And the definition in the marketplace? The term population health has morphed into health-care providers saying [whatever patients they are at risk for in their contracts with health insurers] that is who they have to manage — that is their population. So the question becomes are we talking about population health or managing risk? That’s the key challenge within our field. In this town we have four medical schools and 100 joint CLOSER LOOK er So what is “population health?” There’s a working definition we use from an academic perspective and there’s a definition in the marketplace. They are not the same. The term has been around for 35 years. David Kindig, now a physician at the University of Wisconsin, is considered the father or maybe the grandfather of population health. His definition says there are various determinants of health, but it’s the social determinants of health care that drive a society’s well-being. That’s the best definition. What are those social determinants? Stuff we don’t like to talk about: socioeconomic status, crime, obesity, drug abuse. R Am One of the key components of the Affordable Care Act is a shift away from fee-forservice medicine and to population health. Dr. David Nash, founding dean of the Jefferson School of Population Health of Thomas Jefferson University, sat down with me recently to talk about what the term means and whether Philadelphia is ready to embrace it. & would suggest we are really not ready to take that on. The Affordable Care Act is really not designed to bend the cost curve, but if everyone has insurance that is a major step in the right direction to improving the health of the population. We do know the poor are sicker, lack access, don’t get adequate pain medicine, don’t have access to the same tests and procedures. Universal coverage is a major step toward improving population health. How well-positioned is Philadelphia’s health-care community to deliver population health effectively? If you look at this region there hasn’t been any radical consolidation like in other parts of the country. Will that happen in this marketplace? If I was a betting man I would say it will — probably in the next year. Part two, there is really not a functioning large ACO [accountable care organization, which is a group of doctors, hospitals and other healthcare providers that work together to deliver coordinated care to a patients in a geographic region] around here. … People are making baby steps in the right direction, but we’ve only seen a modest ACO movement. And what about our health information infrastructure? You’ve written about it. A lot of hospitals have put in money for HealthShare Exchange [of Southeastern Pennsylvania], but it’s not up and running yet. You can’t do population health without the information infrastructure. One thing we do have, unlike other states, is the legacy of the Rendell Administration’s chroniccare initiative. It’s a major positive, but it didn’t radically change the JOHN GEORGE 5 JANUARY 3, 2014 28;01 Pennsylvania Bio hosts “Business Botox: How to Get the Wrinkles Out of Your Public Image” at the Desmond Hotel in Malvern on Jan. 28 from 3:45 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. FOLLOWING ON TWITTER: @Donors_1, @theNCI, @MageeRehab , @JeffersonJSPH, @Healthagen stage QUOTABLE n ica er Am “Whatever your thoughts about the Affordable Care Act, it has been a catalyst for significant change in the world of health care... It got everyone thinking about the burden of chronic illness. The last thing is there’s no countervailing economic power to health care in this town. You’ve interviewed Neal Goldfarb [head of the Greater Philadelphia Business Coalition on Health]. For the first time we have the beginnings of a business voice working with us to tackle these issues. In other regions, the business community is a very active participant in population health because their populations are their employees. Employers have the best economic incentive to practice population health; employers should be the leaders of this conversation. We are also really a single-payer town with a not-for-profit plan that is not at the forefront of all the changes. We are thrilled with [Independence Blue Cross’] pay-for-performance work. We are making progress. So are we ready? The evidence would suggest we are at a very early stage. R r fo e R Small business owners were supposed to have their own place online, the SHOP Marketplace, to evaluate coverage options in 2013. Following the problems R Also new for 2014 are provisions that block insurance companies from limiting lifetime coverage or imposing yearly limits for what the federal government has categorized as “essential health benefits.” Those benefits include inpatient and outpatient care, emergency services, maternity and newborn care, pediatric services, mental health and substance use disorder services, prescription drugs, preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management. us R Families and individuals without insurance, with limited exceptions, will have to pay a penalty of the greater of 1 percent of the family’s income or $95 per adult and $47/$50 per child up to $285. By 2016 the penalty will be the greater of 2.5 percent of family income or $605 per adult and $347.50 per child up to $2,085 per family. The penalty is applied to people who don’t have coverage by March 31. In December, the Obama administration said it would grant “hardship exemptions” from the law’s individual mandate to people who had their prior coverage canceled and could not secure affordable coverage through a marketplace plan. R This month also marked the starting point for a provision in the health-care reform law that prohibits health insurers from refusing to cover, or charging higher premiums, to people with preexisting medical conditions. The change applies to Medicaid coverage and the Children’s Health Insurance Program as well. The exception to the rule is grandfathered individual health insurance plans, which do not have to cover pre-existing conditions. People will such plans do have the option of switching to a marketplace plan to get coverage for a pre-existing conditions. R Health insurers will also have to begin paying a new sales tax on premiums beginning in 2014, the rate for which will be set annually by the Treasury Department. Employer groups expect insurers will pass the tax costs onto the buyers of health insurance policies in the form of higher premiums next year. l cia R Right out of the gate, coverage began Jan. 1 for people who obtained coverage through the health insurance marketplaces — the online portals created to allow uninsured individuals to comparison shop for coverage. The rollout of the marketplaces was hampered by technical difficulties that made it difficult for people to access and navigate the websites. Most major insurers have agreed to extend to Jan. 10 the deadline that consumers have to make their first marketplace premium payment. with the sites for individuals, the Department of Health and Human Services said it would delay the launch of the online SHOP Marketplace until November 2014. The big unknown is how health insurance premiums for small businesses will be affected by the cancellation of policies that don’t meet the essential benefit standards. er This year will mark the fifth consecutive year various provisions of the Affordable Care Act are enacted. Here’s what’s new for 2014: m WHAT’S IN STORE FOR OBAMACARE IN 2014 m co AFFORDABLE CARE ACT UPDATE R Medicaid expansion is also set to begin this year in states, including New Jersey and Delaware, that accepted the federal government offer of additional funds to expand Medicaid eligibility requirements. In Pennsylvania, Medicaid expansion is in limbo. Gov. Tom Corbett is seeking HHS approval for a hybrid plan, called HealthyPA, that seeks to use the federal funds to offer subsidies to help people with incomes up to 133 percent of the federal poverty level get private market coverage. The proposal also modifies existing Medicaid benefits by requiring enrollees to fulfill work-search requirements and engage in health measures, including regular physical exams. R This was originally intended to be the year large employers,[those with more than 50 employees] would be hit with penalties [starting out with a fee of $2,000 per full-time employee, excluding the first 30 employees] if they don’t provide health coverage to workers. The implementation of the provision was delayed during the summer by the Obama administration until Jan. 1, 2015, to give companies more time to comply with the law. 6 PHILADELPHIA BUSINESS JOURNAL NATALIE KOSTELNI I NKOSTELNI@BIZJOURNALS.COM Covers real estate and economic development 215-238-5139 @PHLBIZNKOSTELNI COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE When taking the pulse of the market, I developers, lenders, leasing and investment brokers, among others in the business. At the beginning of the recession, this group was anxious about the future, which did look bleak. As the downturn dragged on, those in the region’s commercial real estate business saw flickers of ty Ci es sin Bu The downtown office market, particularly trophy space, is thriving and tight. Combine that with a single owner, Brandywine Realty Trust, controlling about 75 percent of that high-end space, and some are predicting rents will shoot up this year. It could also translate into new construction finally getting under way in the Central Business District. Many are expecting Liberty Property Trust to move forward with a new office project anchored by Comcast Corp. While trophy space is having a strong run, Class B space is expected to see more activity this year. “We’re optimistic for several reasons,” said Jeff Seligsohn of SSH Real Estate, which owns several Class B properties in Center City and also operates a brokerage. SSH is working with a large tenant that is seeking to undertake a -N ot r fo Jeff Seligsohn “significant expansion” prompted by the Affordable Care Act, a law firm that is growing, a professional services firm that is looking to take on more space as well as several nonprofits. “Things are getting back to normal and companies are starting to expand,” Seligsohn said. “Employers are recognizing that the talent is in Philadelphia and if they want to get them, they have to be here. That’s all positive.” l cia er m m co has narrowed, and this year, tenants in C space will look to upgrade to B buildings, Klein predicted. At least five to six “large quality deals” will be announced in the first quarter, said Jason Wolf of Wolf Commercial Real Estate. “There’s a lot of large corporate demand,” Wolf said. “The bad news is smaller businesses, between 3,000 and 10,000 square feet, there’s no demand. Overall, we’re extremely bullish.” als rn ou Anne Klein sJ It got slammed during the downturn, but South Jersey experienced a resurgence in leasing activity last year that is expected to continue this year. “We’ve had a good run with some nice large deals,” said Anne Klein, an office broker in Newmark Grubb Knight Frank’s South Jersey office. “We’re really on a roll.” Tenants backfilled some unexpected large vacancies that hit the market, such as Lockheed Martin cutting back on 80,000 square feet in Cherry Hill. Klein is hopeful that will continue when two large vacancies are expected to put a dent in the market this year. While Class A and C space have vacancies at around 13 percent, Class B space is suffering the worst at 22.5 percent. That was a result of a flight to quality with tenants in B space fleeing to A space that has cheap rents. Now the rent spread between Class B and C space hope – a sale here, a big lease completed, financing loosening up — that would eventually get snuffed out. It took a while but then the mood turned to cautiously optimistic. Finally, still scarred from the recession, there’s a sense of relief that things really have improved. CENTER CITY n SOUTH JERSEY ica er Am f there’s one way to describe how those in the commercial real estate business generally feel about this year it’s optimistic, a word that hasn’t been applicable in the industry in a long time. This bit of optimism is the sense I got from attending some forecast sessions and talking with e us Jeff Mack SUBURBS As with the Center City market, the trophy market and prime locations, such as Radnor and Conshohocken, are tight. This is pushing tenants to seek space in other, lower-rent, buildings, and helping the market clear out some lingering vacancies. “The recovery is coming at us from the stabilization of Class B space,” said Jeff Mack of Newmark Grubb Knight Frank. “Class A has always been in short supply and done well in the Dan Dagit core markets. Class B is where there has been a flight to quality.” That is expected to continue this year. However, there is also something else coming into play. “We’ve seen a flight to quality to a flight to efficiency,” said Geoff Wright, a researcher at Jones Lang LaSalle. Tenants seeking quality and efficiency will prompt more landlords to undertake major redevelopments of their tired, old space. In contrast to last year when up to eight Geoff Wright 100,000-square-foot tenants were in the market, just two in that size range are seeking space. However, the smaller tenants will be active throughout the year. So far, more than 30 deals in the 25,000- to 50,000-square-range will be scouring the market for space. “The tailwinds are growth in small- and mid-cap occupiers,” said Dan Dagit of CBRE Inc. “While market fundamentals will improve in most submarkets, they won’t dramatically and you will see confidence and optimism improve as the year progresses.” 7 JANUARY 3, 2014 “We’re seeing some new companies move into the city and that trend is going to continue.” JEFF SELIGSOHN, SSH Real Estate FOLLOWING ON TWITTER: @officetenant, @lonniebarish, @TomGeisel, @JBalin215 a positive attitude prevails INVESTMENT MARKET OLIVER TYRONE PULVER Am Seven Tower Bridge. er BIG DEALS TO WATCH ica There are a handful of big deals that have lingered in the commercial real estate market that should reach the finish line this year. Here’s what I’m tracking: n ty Ci Michael Margolis Jim Vesey Bu The apartment market has been sizzling for the last five years and will continue to do well though some believe it may begin to cool a tad. “I think there will be some slowing and movement in pricing because the supply continues to increase and there’s more in the pipleine,” said Jim Vesey, an investment broker with Jones Lang LaSalle. Other hot property types? Industrial properties are going to stay “white hot” as an investment as well as grocery-anchored retail centers and office buildings in the Central Business District, Vesey said. es sin sJ “Capital sources are targeting urban properties and specifically Philadelphia,” he said. “I think demand from investors and capital sources is high and may prompt some landlords to put their buildings up for sale.” Suburban office properties are another story. Investors like Class A, LEED buildings in core markets and are shunning generic suburban office properties. “I think it will be more active,” Vesey predicted. “More people are raising money and have money, pricing is better and sellers are compelled to sell into a rising market.” als rn ou -N ot r fo One sure sign about the health of the commercial real estate investment market is a tally in sales and last year there were $750 million in transactions recorded for the region, according to Newmark Grubb Knight Frank data. “I expect this year to be more of the same,” said Michael Margolis, an investment broker with NGKF. “We’ve had one good year and hopefully we have another one.” Between 2000 and 2003, property sales totaled about $36 million and then zoomed up to $1 billion a year between 2004 and 2007. “Then we got killed,” Margolis said. The recession took the hindmost and now sales activity has been picking up. More properties are expected to come on the market this year in all property types but office will dominate the Philadelphia market, Margolis said. One big seller will be special servicers who have properties they took back and have, by law, have three years they can hold onto them. For many buildings, that time has come. Q & A What is your outlook for next year? Generally, it seems like 2014 is going to be a very positive year compared to the last four or five. We expect the higher education market to remain strong and even a little stronger based on the proposals we have seen. A couple of those are for institutions that haven’t How about in health care? Health care will remain strong, but we seem to be experiencing a consolidation in the industry. A lot of small community hospitals are getting bought up left and right. HUP and CHOP and Temple are doing a fair amount of work and we think it will get even better than 2013. I know it’s not a focus but you do some residential work. What do you see there? That seems to be happening all over the place. What we’re seeing more of is a lot of it is being done by the developer and not the institution and we think that will continue. We also have seen a higher number of high-end apartment projects, which is nothing new. What I see happening, which is new, is a reintroduction of condominium work, which we haven’t seen in eight or nine years. 8 PHILADELPHIA BUSINESS JOURNAL ZENOVIA CAMPBELL I ZCAMPBELL@BIZJOURNALS.COM Covers education, technology and venture capital 215-238-5141 @PHLBIZTECHED TECHNOLOGY Spirit of collaboration in the new year I began covering the city’s technology and startup scene in November. In addition to being positive about the future, everyone is confident that the city’s incubators, universities and established companies will come together to make Philadelphia a startup destination. n ica er Am ty Ci es sin Bu sJ rn ou ELLEN WEBER BOB MOUL Brad Denenberg, CEO of Seed Philly, an incubator for seed-stage hightechnology companies, believes 2014 will be an interesting year for Philadelphia’s tech scene. Denenberg foresees an improvement in seed-stage financing, thanks to an increasing amount of venture funds — like Keiretsu Forum and MissonOG — and emerging funding services from the area’s universities. Denenberg also sees a consolidation among the city’s co-working spaces and incubators. “The bubble is bursting,” Denenberg said in an email. “Those who thought it was a simple idea to rent cheap space and sublet a desk are beginning to realize that a lot more goes into providing value for entrepreneurs.” Collaboration would assist in bringing more companies together and reducing the fragmentation within the area’s startup community. “A consolidation across our community will bring a greater critical mass of companies to a centralized location,” he said. “It should result in greater access to resources from big tech companies [i.e. Google, Amazon] that would otherwise not be involved in our community.” Ellen Weber, executive director of Robin Hood Ventures and chief operating officer of VisionMine, said there are a couple of things she sees happening this year. She predicts more alliances between established enterprises and startup companies. “It’s about easy access to the products,” she said. For example, Weber mentioned the partnership between Independence Blue Cross and DreamIt Ventures, in which the companies formed DreamIt Health. These types of partnerships give startups access to resources that can help them reach their goals. In return, Weber said, startups could help established companies become more entrepreneurial. She also predicts an acceleration of results from collaborative efforts occurring among the city government, universities and funding organizations. Weber believes collaborations will lead to more density in the tech community and entrepreneurs will feel less isolated. “There will be more places for entrepreneurs to go,” she said. “More and more each year I feel the collaborative spirit occurring.” She also told me that she has a wish for 2014: “More women investors.” Bob Moul, CEO of Artisan Mobile, predicts an increasing collaboration between “established players” and startups. He also sees growth within the local entrepreneur community. “I think we’ll continue to see a steady maturing of the startup ecosystem,” Moul said in an email. “We’re less about talk these days and more about getting down to the serious business of building companies and communities.” Moul also noted that college students are becoming more conscious of the city’s offerings. “University students will continue to become more and more aware of the opportunities that are right here in Philly and become increasingly engaged in community activities while in school.” He also made another prediction: “Philadelphia will make a (positive) top-ten list in 2014.” als BRAD DENENBERG -N ot r fo l cia er m m co e us 9 JANUARY 3, 2014 ELEVATOR PITCH Zuppler’s platform helps eateries zip orders your way Zuppler is an online ordering platform for restaurants. The Fed Reserve said the economy is gaining strength so it felt it could curb its “quantitative easing” strategy. The thinking from many followers of the financial services sector is that this so-called “tapering” could cause a domino effect of rising interest rates, more profits from deposits and loans, increased stock prices and a healthier banking sector. “Banks will be aided by no more declining interest rates,” Stifel Nicolaus investment banker David Lazar said. “That means they have a better chance to improve net interest margin.” Swartz said if rates and net interest margin increase, it could also finally spur the mergers-and-acquisitions wave that many industry observers have predicted for years. The theory is that as earnings increase, so will stock prices and the pricing of deals will be more attractive to sellers. It would also help banks if unemployment, still hovering at 7 n ica er Am “If rates stay where they are, it will be tough to make money.” ty Ci Bu DAVID SWARTZ, sin Stevens and Lee es sJ percent but sinking in recent months, continued to decline. That might give businesses the confidence needed to take out loans to expand or improve their operations. Certainly consultants like Lazar and Swartz have a rooting interest in more als rn ou autious optimism. Those are the two words advisers to banks use when describing their clients collective mood when looking forward to 2014. Banks have been cautious ever since the recession wreaked havoc on their balance sheets in late 2008. But the optimism part has grown over the past year as credit quality continued to improve and loan demand increased somewhat. But banks continue to deal with heightened regulatory burdens and narrow net interest margins. “If rates stay where they are, it will be tough to make money,” said David Swartz, a banking lawyer with Stevens & Lee. “Rate increases would affect everything they do in a positive way.” There might be a light at the end of the tunnel on that score thanks to a decision last month by the Federal Reserve Board, which said it would reduce its purchases of Treasury bonds and mortgage-backed securities by $10 M&A activity because it means more work for them. But their theory makes a good deal of sense. Pricing on M&A has been a major factor holding back potential sellers since the recession hit and rocked bank stock values. Because there is plenty of reason to sell, especially in a competitive, some say overbanked, market like Philadelphia. The heightened costs of regulatory compliance are not proportional and are especially difficult on smaller banks, of which this region has plenty. Some say banks need to have $500 million in assets to be viable. Others, including bankers that participated in a national survey by KPMG, put that figure at $1 billion. That’s why the number of banks nationwide has been cut in half over the past decade or so. But many board members and executives of these smaller institutions have held out, hoping to salvage some value for stockholders. A little sJ more than 48 percent said they would be buyers, 9.6 percent said they would be sellers, 25 percent said they have no M&A plans and 17.3 percent were unsure. That gap between potential buyers and sellers is wider than KPMG’s national survey, which showed 40 percent expecting to be a buyer, while 25 percent anticipate being a seller, the survey showed. Depman said that is probably because bank performance in this region is better than it is nationally, so fewer institutions feel the need to sell. And even if two banks sign off on a merger or acquisition, there is no guarantee that regulators will approve the deal. Over the past few years, several banks pulled the plug on announced deals after regulators failed offer their approval. Depman thinks there will be an increase of M&A activity, but he said it will not be massive. “Many have been predicting a flood of M&A activity in this industry over the als rn ou magazine shows a disconnect on pricing that needs to be fixed if banks want to close deals next year. It said 63 percent of buyers thought seller price expectations were too high, while the biggest reason banks cited for not selling is they thought prices were too low. SNL Financial data from late November show the number of bank acquisitions declined in 2013 from 2012 to 189 from 212 during the same period a year ago. Yet now there are signs that prices are beginning to increase. The median price for bank acquisitions was almost 144 percent in October and more than 124 percent in November — both representing some of the highest prices in the past three years. In late December, Team Capital Bank, a Bethlehem-based startup with two of its 12 locations in Bucks County, received 1.8 times book value for agreeing to be acquired by Provident Financial Services in Jersey City, N.J., for $122 million in cash and stock. “The fact is that it’s tough to get a deal done.” JOHN DEPMAN, KPMG past several years, but it’s been more like a steady drip,” Depman said. “The fact is that it’s tough to get a deal done. The bid-ask price spread, the regulatory environment, and targets’ balance sheet issues are all real challenges to overcome.” -N ot r fo BANKS TO WATCH IN 2014 There are more than 100 banks operating in the Philadelphia region. But there are a handful that observers might want to watch closely this coming year. l cia er m m co e us Bruce Van Saun Jay Sidhu 1. CITIZENS BANK 2. CUSTOMERS BANK The region’s third-largest deposit taker should be in the news quite a bit over the next few years. Early last year, its parent company, Royal Bank of Scotland, said Citizens would hold an initial public offering for 20 percent to 25 percent of the bank in 2014. But in October, right after new CEO Bruce Van Saun took over, rumors surfaced that TD Bank Group, the second-largest bank in the region, was pondering a $13 billion bid for Citizens. And then in November, RBS said it said it plans to divest itself of Citizens Financial Group, the U.S. parent to Citizens Bank, by 2016. But it remains to be seen if Citizens winds up being an independent company or is simply sold to another bank like TD. Any bank run by Jay Sidhu is fun to cover because he is always active. Just look at last year. Customers raised hundreds of millions of dollars, invested $51 million in an Indian company and continued to pursue acquisitive and organic expansion. But Customers also called off plans to buy a Northern Virginia bank and the U.S. Department of Justice said it would be investigating the bank after finding possible violations of lending discrimination laws. That could put a crimp in Sidhu’s aggressive growth strategy, which has led the bank from $265 million in assets when he took the reins in June 2009 to $3.8 billion at the end of third-quarter 2013. Sidhu plans to make Customers a $5 billion to $10 billion bank with geographic reach from New England to Washington. And it should be interesting to see him reach for that goal in the next few years. Gerard Cuddy 3. BENEFICIAL BANK After a bit of a rough patch after the recession hit, Beneficial Mutual Bancorp’s balance sheet has rebounded nicely. And CEO Gerard Cuddy seemed prime to put Philadelphia’s oldest bank in growth mode. But last April, Beneficial said the DOJ was investigating the bank’s home loan policies for potential violations of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act and Fair Housing Act relating to its homemortgage lending practices. That has kept the $4.7 billion asset bank from pursuing any regulatory applications related to strategic expansion or a second step conversion from a mutual to a fully stock-owned company, which its board had been evaluating. But Beneficial said in its third-quarter earnings report that it is not aware of any evidence of wrongdoing. When and if the investigation ends, watch for Beneficial to push forward with the conversion, which should improve its capital and therefore, ability to grow. 12 PHILADELPHIA BUSINESS JOURNAL PETER VAN ALLEN I PVANALLEN@BIZJOURNALS.COM Covers hospitality, nonprofits and retail 215-238-5145 @PHLBIZBITES HOSPITALITY SMG will labor to turn center around A n ica er ty Ci es sin Bu John McNichol, interim CEO of the Pennsylvania Convention Center. sJ als rn ou -N ot r fo l cia er m m co e us With SMG’s recent takeover, what’s next for the Convention Center? The convention industry is global and highly competitive. Customers have become much more sophisticated and cost conscious when shopping for the best venue to host a convention, conference or trade show. The center needs to meet and exceed customer expectations or risk losing new and repeat business. The Convention Center board’s decision to bring SMG to manage and operate the center recognizes this new industry landscape. Our transition to SMG, and industry leader that manages 70 other properties, has been well received by the industry and our stakeholders, but it is only one part of a four-pronged comprehensive strategy to make the center more competitive and attract new business. Those four initiatives, which we will address in the coming year, include: Enhancing operations management; improving the labor-supply model; addressing concerns related to work rules; enhancing billing transparency. been cooperative and collaborative with many staff members shifting or taking on new responsibilities to meet customer needs and lending new ideas to existing SMG procedures. SMG has also initiated training that provides staff with an expanded knowledge base and exposure to industry best practices. In addition, SMG’s operational presence in markets across the nation provides us with an enhanced ability to intuitively understand our customers and the choices they make, anticipate their needs, and build competitive packages to suit their business. SMG is already working closely with the [Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau] to aggressively market the center and highlight our new customer-focused approach. Am Q The Pennsylvania Convention Center, which underwent a $786 million expansion in 2011, has been plagued by high labor costs and a projected decline in convention bookings for coming years. As of Dec. 1, the Convention Center is under private management by West Conshohocken-based SMG, which operates the convention centers in Chicago, Detroit, Denver, Pittsburgh and more than 60 other cities. We asked John McNichol, acting president and CEO of the center and vice chairman of the Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority, what kind of impact SMG might have. Have there been any significant changes since SMG signed the contract? SMG has added significant bench strength to our staff, broadened our vision, and enhanced our ability to identify and react to emerging trends in the market. The majority of our staff has transitioned over to employment directly with SMG. The transition has JEFF FUSCO What are some realistic goals for 2014? Our primary goal — and the goal of our marketing partners at the PHLCVB — is to increase the number of short and midterm bookings to provide a boost for the region’s hotels and local businesses. This is a significant challenge given the cyclical nature of the industry with most major shows booking three to seven years out — sometimes even longer. To be successful we need to demonstrate how the transition to SMG has enhanced the customer experience. For example, we changed the structure of our laborsupply model, making SMG directly responsible for working with labor on the show floor. This makes the purchase of show labor more economical, easier to understand, and addresses communication issues. We are also working to improve billing transparency and discussions regarding work rules are ongoing, with SMG sharing how changes at facilities like Chicago have resulted in increased bookings and additional union work. Further progress on our four strategic initiatives in the coming year will put us in a great position to attract new, large shows that will benefit the region’s hospitality industry. In the end, our success will ultimately be measured by satisfied customers, repeat business and new bookings. 13 JANUARY 3, 2014 “We’re growing at a rate faster than the national rate.” TREVOR PRICHETT, chief operating officer of Yards Brewing Co., FOLLOWING ON TWITTER: @VisitAC, @CutonDime25, @WorldCafeLive, @PhillyinFocus, @PhillyBestBYOB BizBites WHAT IS THE BIGGEST DINING TREND WE CAN EXPECT IN PHILADELPHIA IN 2014? E ven though we should know better, our shortmemory society tends to think that modern-day technology entrepreneurship began in the 1970s in Steve Jobs’ garage or Bill Gates’ dorm room. But one man — a native Philadelphian who died at age 83 in 2013 — really captured the spirit of what American enterpreneurship is at its best. Amar Bose, who would go on to found one of the most recognizable brands in audio entertainment, grew up in a modest house in Abington. As a teenager, according to multiple sources, he had a little business fixing radios and other electric products. That acumen got him to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he eventually earned a Ph.D in electrical engineering and joined the faculty. He was fascinated by loudspeaker design and motivated by the limitations of 1950s home music. From the Bose website: “To reward himself for his studies, after careful consideration he purchased a new home stereo system that he hoped would deliver the realism of live music. Though the speakers he chose carried impressive technical specs, they didn’t deliver in real life.” So he began researching how to get that real-life sound. His research led to two valuable patents in the 1960s that formed the basis of the Bose Corp., which rather quickly became the gold standard for audio. According to the Boston Globe, the private company now employs about 10,000 people across the world and has close to $3 billion in annual er About this Duck Dynasty business, one question. FROM THE EDITOR offering. Surely, he could have made a killing by selling the fast-rising company, but he had no interest in that, either. According to those who knew him best, Bose believed that having to answer to Wall Street would stifle innovation. “I never went into business to make money,” he told Popular Science magazine in 2004. “I went into business so that I could do interesting things.” Bose ended up becoming a billionaire anyway. Nothing wrong with that. But what we can learn from Bose is that business and capitalism is at its best when it pushes human progress forward and unfettered greed (sorry, Gordon Gekko) stays in the background. Philadelphia should be very proud to claim Bose as a native son. Plus, physical fitness is a huge priority for many of our consultants, so with the office sitting right on the Delaware and Raritan (D&R) Canal towpath it makes it really easy for our boot camp team, our running group and our cycling group to have immediate access to a safe environment. BIO r fo You’ve worked at big companies like GE and IBM, what caused you to try running your own consulting shop in 2005? I truly loved consulting but grew exhausted of being on the 6:05 a.m. departure on Monday and returning on the 9:05 p.m. flight on Thursday. I wanted to create a consulting environment where being home for dinner (most nights) was both possible and encouraged. R ot Joy Taylor is co-founder with John Cassimatis of TayganPoint Consulting Group, which was established in 2009. JEFF FUSCO When they make the movie of your life who should play you? Either Laura Linney or Annette Bening; I believe both women would be outstanding at displaying my sometimes hard, fast-paced exterior, and soft, sensitive interior. You’re a devoted foodie, are there things that just don’t light up your taste buds? I will travel miles for a great meal and will often be found talking to my plate if the meal is truly exceptional; plus I will compliment the chef. But I am also known for walking past Brussels sprouts, oysters and anything that requires me to fight with my food in order to appreciate the event. But if you invite me for Cuban food, be prepared for a loud discussion — perhaps those 25 years in Florida had some kind of influence. You can only eat one type of food for the rest of your life (no matter what it is you will stay healthy), what would it be? I have two answers for this: Pizza because you can eat it hot or cold and it still tastes good to me under both conditions. And Georgia peaches that run down your face when you eat them. That would be a great way to start each day. — Interviewed by Dell Poncet Q A longer version of this Q&A is available at pbj.com 24 PHILADELPHIA BUSINESS JOURNAL under n ica er Am Abracadabra...Presto Chango...POOF Which 40 Leaders will Appear this Year? ty Ci es sin Bu Philadelphia Business Journal seeks the most talented up and coming leaders who demonstrate professional accomplishments and community involvement. sJ Nominate Today: http://tinyurl.com/2014pbj40u40 Deadline: Friday, January 10, 2014, 5pm -N ot r fo 40 Under 40 Awards Program Tuesday, May 20, 5pm – 8pm Crystal Tea Room, Wanamaker Building als rn ou Save the Date! m m co l cia er Sponsored by: us e Hosted by: pbj.com Tweet All About It: #pbj40u40 Questions?
