Religious Education 203-234-9287 Director of Religious Education Terry Raffone I wish to thank all those who thought of me during Christmas. I am very blessed with all the families I deal with. Your gifts and prayers are deeply appreciated. Thank you all for making my celebration of Christmas a humbling experience. We are, as always, collecting pennies for the homeless. In addition to any lose change you may have; we could also use Dunkin Donut gift cards. The homeless must leave the shelters, if they are fortune enough to be in a shelter, early in the morning. The gift cards give them an opportunity to get something hot to drink, a bit of something to eat, and a warm place to stay for a while. Gift cards in any denomination are greatly appreciated. Remember if there is no school in North Haven or school is dismissed early, because of the weather there are no Religious Education classes. Cancelations will be posted on WTNH TV channel 8 and WTIC TV channel 3. “Oh, I don’t reject Christ. I love Christ. It’s just that so many Christians are so unlike Christ. We have become accustomed to these if not as expected, at least as an example of the way some people take chances with their lives. But more recently we see, increasingly, the violent destruction of life being falsely justified as a so-called political statement. The Boko Haran abduction and selective murder of high school girls in Nigeria, the beheading of two reporters in Syria by Isis as a threat to the world, The ambush of two policemen in New York, the murder of eight staff in the magazine Office in Paris. Has life become so cheapened that we have forgotten the words of Ps. 8 “You made him a little less than the angels”. The latest devaluation of life is the growing number of Suicides especially among the young . The loss of one's life is looked upon as the only solution to facing the problems of everyday life. Sometimes suicide has also become the choice of those older individuals who find life a cross to heavy to carry. More often, it’s due to the fact that they feel forgotten by the world and by those who should care. I am afraid that we have forgotten to support with enthusiasm the belief that the life of every individual is a gift from God to be held as a precious trust. With that gift comes a condition that we protect, defend and promote the value of our own life as well as that of all others. It demands awareness, willingness to see where help is needed and the voice to stand up and be counted when false philosophies of life are publically advocated. Within the past two weeks, all the Catholic bishops of Connecticut issued a call to action to oppose efforts once more arising in the Connecticut legislature to pass legislation allowing “Physicians Assisted Suicide”. As a church community we need to be vigilant, pro-active and knowledgeable regarding (this philosophy) and be ready to join forces with other groups...to defeat it. We are obliged to do so because we believe that Physician Assisted Suicide is based on false arguments, it is unnecessary, and it is destructive of human life and dignity. As an offense against the Author of Life, it can only lead to our diminishment as human beings and a bad outcome for our society. “You have made him a little less than the angels” Ps. 8 JANUARY 18, 2015 Saturday: January 17th, 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Vigil Mass 4:00 p.m. Elaine Berardesca-9th Anniversary (Family) Sunday: January 18th, 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time 8:00 a.m. Deceased Members of the Adinolfi and Provini Families 9:30 a.m. Mary A.
