Heritage Days
2011
July 18th - July 24th
Wasn’t that a Party!
Looking back on
Schreiber’s 125th
Greetings from Heritage Days Committee
Once again, it is my distinct pleasure to welcome residents and visitors alike to Schreiber’s 126th
birthday and our annual Heritage Days Festival. Many of your favourite events are returning and we are
introducing some new ones. Science North is coming for three days. This group of scientists has six exciting and fun activities for all ages - including panning for gold! And it is all free! We have luncheons and
barbecues. Howie is back! Try to break the bank at Deal or No Deal. Enjoy Pina’s pre- Deal or No Deal
meal at the Voyageur. Scour the town during Yard Sale Day.
Your hardworking Heritage Days Committee hopes that everyone has a happy, fun, safe and eventfilled Heritage Days Week.

It is an honour to welcome everyone to Schreiber Heritage Days 2011!
In Schreiber we have over 125 years of family tradition and the greatest volunteers in the world.
I look forward to seeing everyone at all the exciting events throughout the
week.
On behalf of Council I would like to extend a special invitation to the Mayor
and Council Barbeque on Monday, July 18th.
Congratulations to the committee for all their volunteer efforts and making
Heritage Days a tradition we are all so proud of!
Don McArthur, Mayor
Message From Mike Gravelle
As the Member of Provincial Parliament for Thunder Bay-Superior North,
and on behalf of the constituents I am so priveleged to serve, I’m pleased to
have this oppurtunity to extend best wishes during Schreiber Heritage Days!
The distinctive spirit of Schreiber continues to grow and thrive, and events
like these are such a wonderful way to keep community spirit alive and strong.
It’s also a time to celebrate your history, from the brave and hardy workers
who arrived here to build the Canadian Pacific Railway and carved the original
community of Isbester’s Landing from the northern wilderness, to the many
Italian families who, then as today, call this little piece of paradise “home”.
And there are so many others, past and present, who have contributed so
much to make Schreiber the vibrant community it has always been, and is
today!
Enjoy friends, family and happy memories during Heritage Days. May
Schreiber continue to be blessed with happiness and harmony.
Sincerly,
Michael Gravelle, M.P.P

Rollie’s Rendezvous 20th Anniversary
The Superior North Shore Power and Sail Squadron began hosting Rollie’s Rendezvous 20
years ago in August 1991. As a group of boaters we wanted to do something to honor Rollie
Stortini, a long time resident of Jackfish and Schreiber and a founding member of our squadron.
Rollie, who passed away too early in 1991, was always interested in Lake Superior. He encouraged many young boaters to explore the lake and safely pursue their boating skills.
The Rendezvous was a fun activity of boaters plotting courses on Lake Superior and finding
hidden markers which revealed the next several legs of the course. This would lead a boat and
crew to a secret rendezvous site.
Pot luck dinners, campfires and singing always surrounded the Admiral’s Review Board
which verified navigational skills, or lack of them, during the running of the course.
After all the fun of managing Rollie’s Rendezvous, the Squadron would like to celebrate
the 20th year by inviting all boaters in the area to rendezvous with us in Kelly’s Harbour (48*
45.9’N 87* 11.4’W) just west of Hydro Bay on Saturday, July 23rd at 2:00pm. Kelly’s Harbour
is also accessible from the Casque Isles hiking trail.
We welcome all to join us (bring some food) for a wonderful day on the water. As always with
Lake Superior, the alternate date for the rendezvous due to inclement weather (rain, fog, hurricaine) will be Sunday, July 24th at 2:00pm
We would appreciate you contacting Bill Roen at 825-3343 so we can anticipate your crew at
Kelly’s Harbour.
Canadian Fire Fighters raised $2.7 Million dollars
for supporting those affected with Muscular Dystrophy last year. Ontario Fire Fighters raised $1,175.00.
Our Fire Department has donated approximately
$1000.00 in the last two years thanks to the generous
support of our residents and visitors. We thank you
for your support and request it again this year.
Donations gratefully accepted by the fire
fighter’s rubber boot campaign during the
parade.
