The Township of Schreiber has a proud railroad history since 1885 and is currently home
to approximately 1,200 residents with roughly 130,000 people within a two hour drive.

(CSD) as the one they lived in one year earlier.
5
Migrants are movers who, on Census Day, were residing in a different CSD one year earlier (internal migrants) or who

Net Import & Export of Labour Force
The next table highlights industry sectors in which there is a net “export” or “import” of
labour. In 2006, there were 325 jobs in Schreiber, and an employed resident labour
force of 320, indicating that Schreiber was a net “importer” of at least 5 employees. The
net export/import calculation is simply the number of jobs in each of Schreiber's
industries minus the number of Schreiber's residents working in that particular industry.
It is important to note that the export/import numbers indicated under-represent the
actual numbers of employees, as this calculation assumes all of the employed resident
labour force in that industry works in Schreiber.
The size of the Schreiber resident labour force exceeds the jobs available in the following
industry sectors in Schreiber: Manufacturing; Utilities; Retail trade; Administrative and
support, waste management and remediation services; Health care and social
assistance.

11.5% in 2011, to 11% in 2012 and to 10% in 2013.

the small business income tax rate from 5.5% to 4.5% effective July 1, 2010. Ontario levies a surtax at a rate of 4.25%
on CCPCs claiming the Ontario small business deduction in order to gradually reduce the benefit of the deduction where
taxable income exceeds the small business income threshold. Based on the small business limit of $500,000 the phase-put
range for the application of the surtax is between $500,000 and $1.5 million. The province’s 2009 budget proposes to
eliminate this small business deduction surtax, effective July 1, 2010.

McCausland Hospital is a modern, fully accredited 45-bed community hospital located in
Terrace Bay, Ontario. Overlooking the shores of Lake Superior, the Hospital services a
population of approximately 4,000 residents from the communities of Terrace Bay,
Schreiber, Rossport, Jackfish and Pays Plat.
Named for the town's first physician, Dr. Michael McCausland, the present structure was
built in 1980. In May 2011, construction was completed on the 22-bed Long Term Care
wing. With input from the Staff and community, the wing was named Wilkes Terrace in
memory of Dr. Keith Wilkes. Dr. Wilkes was a well-respected Family Physician who
dedicated more than 25 years to health care in our communities.

Schreiber is home to the recently completed Railway Heritage museum that highlights
the community’s background as the oldest railway community on the North Shore of
Lake Superior. It builds on the history and culture both of Schreiber and the Canadian
Pacific Railway. Schreiber was first founded in the 1880's as a railway construction camp.
Initially called Isbester’s Landing, the town later was renamed after a railway engineer,
Sir Collingwood Schreiber, and it became a booming terminal for C.P.R. Subsequently,
the area became home to hundreds of immigrants from Southern Italy, whose
descendants remain there today. It is a must see for all railway enthusiasts and other
visitors who are interested in the past.
