SNIPPETS NO. 18 – WEEK 19 Thurs, May 07 2015 - Wed, May 13, 2015 NEWS Kamogelo Sikhosana, Neill Leith, Tanya Pretorius, Munante Pretorius and Bradley Anderson WELCOME BACK TO: Wesley Botton and Dionne Krieger PLEASE JOIN US FOR THE TIME TRIAL ON WEDNESDAY NIGHTS AND HAVE A DRINK IN THE PUB AFTERWARDS. Janita Muller Clive Laycock We send our very best wishes for a speedy and full recovery to Haley, the Roodepoort Athletic Club runner who has knocked down during the Colgate Road Race. Our thoughts are with her, her family and all involved in this tragic incident. Our heartfelt thanks go to all our wonderful club members and friends of the club who assisted, and continue to assist, Haley, her family and fellow runners following this incident. You make us so proud to be Boksburg Athletic Club members and members of such a caring running community!! Hannelie and Johan Dunn and family on the passing away of Hannelie’s brother. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time. Simon and Karin Ward on the birth of their son Matthew, in Canada. It is with huge gratitude that we thank our valued and loyal sponsor, Colgate, for their 23rd year of sponsorship of our race. We are proud to be associated with such a great brand! Thank you so much to all club members, their families and friends who volunteered their time to help with the Colgate Road Race! Without you, the day would not have been the resounding success it was! Thank you and congratulations to Linda Vogel, the race organizer for a superb event. DIARISE ROAD JIMMY PERKINS 64KM LONG RUN Thank you and well done to Bob Harvey and his team of helpers who ensured that the Jimmy Perkins 64km Long Run on 1 May was a success! Over 100 runners participated in the event, with at least 60, running the full distance. The remaining runners turned back earlier on the out-and-back route, or called on the roving catch-car to take them back to the stadium when they felt they could no longer continue. The route took the runners into the quiet and scenic plot roads of Benoni. Some “new” scenery was welcomed by all. COMRADES TRAINING CAMP 2015 Comrades Training Camp 2015 | 200kms of running in 7 days | ON the Comrades route Do you run the Comrades route only once a year, and if you‟re a novice only on race day? On the 25th April, 24 runners and 9 family members and supporters, set off on Frank Da Ascencao‟s annual Comrades Training Camp to run 30kms per day for 5 days on the Comrades route . The three sponsored charter coaches (lots of appreciation to Mark Humphreys) transported the runners and their supporters. Base camp was set up in Amanzimtoti. Training started on Sunday and continued up until Thursday. Each day, a distance of between 30-35 km was covered on the actual Comrades route, starting in Durban and ending in Pietermaritzburg. The coaches used for this tour were parked every 5km‟s en route where the great supporters made sure the runners were hydrated with cold drinks and their blood sugar levelled with „jam tarts‟ and jelly babies. The whole idea of this camp is to get to know the route and to experience the “Five Hills” – Cowies, Fields, Botha, Inchanga and the dreaded Polly Shortts. The segments overlapped each day so that each hill was done twice. So, by Thursday, 150km was covered in 5 days. On day one of training camp, the group started at the official Comrades starting point, the City Hall in Durban and day five the runners finished at the Oval Cricket stadium in Pietermaritzburg. The sting in the tail came on Friday when they ran the Ballito Marathon – a total of close on 200 kays in 6 days! The race took place along the M4 north bound carriage way at sea level which offered breath-taking ocean views. Some great performances were achieved after a hard week of training: Nick Bester – 2.54/ Eugene vd Westhuizen – 2.58/ George Benade – 3.20/ Mark Humphreys – 3.28/ Vhonani Mudau – 3.40 and the rest ran a bus in under 4 hours. The benefits of this Comrades training camp are enormous according to the runners. They say a picture tells a thousand words, but in this case, running the route yourself (and not just viewing the profile of the route) has immense benefits! Rita van Wyk, running her 8th Comrades Marathon this year, attends this training camp every year, as she believes that it refreshes her mind of the route and assists her in preparing herself 100% for the big day. Coach Frank (20 silver Comrades medals and 28 Comrades finishes) taught the runners en route about the correct approach to each hill (yes, there are more than the official 5), how to save time by cutting the corners on the road, how to take a „bossie‟ (Jolene and Taryn had fun with this lesson ) and to try to not walk if it isn‟t necessary as this will waste a lot of time on race day. Of course, the training camp wasn‟t only about running. Braai evenings, a visit to uShaka Marine World, shopping and just relaxing on the beach was also part of the week‟s programme for these hard working runners. Everyone will remember this training camp by wearing their precious Training Camp long sleeve shirts which was sponsored by Target Laboratories (thanks to Dean Passmore) and the bonding they had with their fellow runners through the sweat (oh my is KZN humid!) and lots of laughter. A BIG thank you to everyone involved in making this training camp a huge success! - Shelley vd Spuy and Jolene Matthysen Training run & race calendar May 2015 Date Race Distance Time Venue Sun, 10 May Training run 25 06h00 Boksburg City Stadium Sun, 10 May Randburg Harriers 21/10/5 07h00 Randburg Sports Complex Sun, 17 May RAC 10 10 08h00 Old Parks Sun, 24 May Chairman's Breakfast Run 10 07h00 TBA Sun, 31 May Comrades Marathon 86.3 05h30 City Hall, Durban CLUB CHAMPS AMILA BLITZ (TIME TRIALS) RESULTS – 22 APRIL, 2015 2km 1. Occupation: Senior Trainee Accountant at KPMG (CA in the making) I have been a member of Boksburg Athletic Club since: 2011 I started running because: of a deal that Nick and I made in 2010 when we first started dating. The deal was to do our first Comrades in 2014, and we did it! The first race I participated in was: 5km fun run at Striders in 2010 (Wow, I‟ve come a long way since then). The person who has had the biggest influence on my running career so far is: My mom, Shelley Van der Spuy. Thirteen comrades, all with Bill Rowan times, an awesome achievement. The running achievement I am most proud of is: Completing my first Comrades in 2014. My PB’s for these distances are: 8km time trial: 35.27 My favourite 10km: 45.20 Taryn with her mom, Shelley vd Spuy, drink is: An 21.1km: 1.47 and her boyfriend, Nick Bester ice-cold 42.2Km: 3.23 Savanna. 50km: 4.23 Two Oceans Ultra-marathon: 4:42 Comrades Marathon: 8.41 My running goals for 2015 are: To complete the up run comrades, finishing with a Bill Rowan. The best piece of running advice I’ve received was from my dad before I ran Comrades: “Spare a thought for those who are unable to line up at the start due to illness and injury. Choose the advice you have been given wisely and have the courage to run with your heart. Remember time in the „bank‟ at halfway does not count at the finish”. I train with: Nick Bester (not the Nick Bester, even though he is probably just as talented), Mark Humphreys (the bald bullet) and Fast Frank‟s Group. My favourite race distance is: 42.2km My favourite race is Kosmos 3-in-1 because: It was the last race that I did and what a day! 42.2km in the morning, 21km at lunch and 10km in the evening. By the time the 10km comes, you have no idea how you are going to get your legs moving again. Somehow you get yourself to the start line and plod along with the rest of the runners. Coming in for the third and final time around Umuzi Lake is a feeling like no other. The advice I’d give a novice runner is: You are capable of more than you think. You mind gives up before your body does. „There is something magical about running; after a certain distance, it transcends the body. Then a bit further, it transcends the mind. A bit further yet, and what you have before you, laid bare is the soul‟ [Kristin Armstrong]. My biggest supporter is: most definitely my mom. She has run beside me, helping me get my C seeding for Comrades. She has given me the best advice and was supporting me every step of the way along the Comrades route. Some mothers and daughters bond by going shopping together, not us, our relationship is bound tight by the many early mornings and the kilometres we have run side by side. My favourite TV programme or movie is: Breaking Bad (the greatest series ever!) STAY CONNECTED Facebook Join the Boksburg Athletic Club Facebook page to keep up to date with the club’s happenings.
