Every job and industry seems to have its own terminology that becomes the workplace standard. In our day-to-day, design speak is really no different. So, don’t be taken aback if an electrician comes into your home and wants to fix your husband’s shorts, the plumber removes your skirt to find the annoying source of the plumbing leak, your new carpet has a hard twist or your designer wants to have a stylish runner that stays put in your hallway. Telling a successful stock broker, “I did the Trading Floor at Dominion Securities” might elicit a look of sheer horror—clearly something altogether different might be assumed! However, when the news is shared in a group of interior designers, we would most likely extend our congratulations to the person who did the entire floor and raise our glasses to a job well done. Everyone makes mistakes. Unfortunately, in the design world they are often costly and amusing, but always regrettable. An oversize sofa that looked amazing in the showroom becomes a white elephant if it is six inches too long for the room. What do we say? “Do you have a cottage? Or perhaps a child going off to university? How big is your spouse’s office?” We’ve also discovered that armoires rarely fit into elevators… have fun walking up 11 flights of stairs. Sofas have been known to go through windows in a pinch, and it is not uncommon for doors to come off their hinges to get that “man TV” into the house. So, yes, size does matter in the world of design! H O M E F R O N T FA L L 2 0 1 3 43
