Next Event: Saturday, January 11, SMJC Lunch Meeting and Historic Landmark Drive, Gourmet and Co., Johnson City, TN.
The next Club event will be a Membership and Board Meeting and lunch at the
Gourmet & Company restaurant in Johnson
City on Saturday January 11 at 11:30 noon.
Following the meeting there will be an
optional drive. The drive will take members
to two local historical landmarks in our area. The first is the Covered Bridge in Elizabethton. The Bridge was built in 1882 and is
believed to be the oldest covered bridge in
the state which is still used daily. We will
park and hopefully get some good pictures
of the group while there. We will then drive
over to Jonesborough, the oldest town in
Tennessee. There are many quaint stores in
the downtown area as well as the nationally
known Storytelling Center. Members are
encouraged to stop and enjoy the many
stores in the town as well as the little ice
cream shop! Looking forward to seeing everyone at the meeting as well as on our
drive.

Member News
If you have failed to send in your membership renewal
check for 2014, please do so as soon as possible. I have
heard from only two-thirds of our members. We need to
forward our dues check and roster to JCNA and want each
existing member to be on that list. The Member Directory
will be published and mailed after all dues are received. Another copy of the Member Renewal Letter is
included on page 4 in this newsletter for your convenience.
Gail Amanns has graciously agreed to lead us as President in 2014. She appointed Jimmy George as Event Coordinator and he is putting together some great drives and
activities for the enjoyment of our club members. Don't
be left out - renew today!!!

Membership Chair
If you competed nationally in any of the JCNA events
such as Concours you should read the notice on page 6 to
ensure you receive any awards you may have won.
Your editor received this note from member Tina
Meyer recently:
Dear Smoky Mountain Jaguar Club,
I just wanted to thank all of you who made me feel
welcome. Due to uncontrollable circumstances, I had to
let my XK go, but he has a very good home, so I’m not
worried. He will be happier with his new family!! Maybe
one day I’ll get another, anything is possible if you want it
bad enough!! I may not have a Jaguar right now but they
will always be my favorite. Nothing can compare, but you
already know that! I wish you all a very happy, healthy
holiday!! Till we meet again,
Tina Meyer
JCNA Trophy Confirmation
After December 1st, all competition scores should
have been posted on the JCNA site and you should be able
to view all the standings on the JCNA.com Standings page.
To see the Standings, go to jcna.com, click on the
Standings link, then click on the 2013 Results and Provisional Standings to check your scores. Under 2013 Final
Standings / Competition Awards, select from one of the
following: Concours (North American) | Concours
(Regional) | Rally | Slalom. Scroll down to locate your
name. For North American Standings, if you have placed
1st, 2nd or 3rd, your name should be displayed. Click on
your score. You should then see the list of the concours
you attended. Below your list of events you have entered,
you should see “click here to confirm data for your award
order”. You will be required to enter your address and
other contact information. Please be sure to include your
email address, it is not automatically included. If you do
not include it, there will be no way for you to receive an
email from JCNA with further details.
Each entrant is responsible for confirming their concours, rally and slalom scores. This is because some people move and some information may have been incorrect-
ly entered after the events you attended and that is why
JCNA does not just automatically send out trophies to everyone listed on the web site.
After your information has been received by the trophy committee, it will be posted on a link from the AGM
page. (That is because that page can quickly update by the
trophy committee.) You should also receive an email within 48 hours of confirming your information. If you do not
include your email address, there is no quick way to contact you. If you do not receive an email from the trophy
committee, they have not received your information.
When you complete the confirmation information,
one of the questions is, do you want to receive your trophy at the AGM, that means you must attend the AGM, or
do you want to have it shipped to you. All trophies that we
have received information for, will be either shipped to
the AGM for presentation or shipped out just before the
AGM. Any trophy confirmations received after that will be
processed the end of each month and you should receive
your trophy three weeks after that.

Smoky Mountain Jaguar Club Newsletter
Volume 1, Number 1
Interim Newsletter Editor
May, 2001
Bob Reid
GREETINGS
We are pleased to hear that you are interested in being a charter member of a Jaguar club covering an area roughly 100 miles in radius from Knoxville, Tennessee. I met most of you at the British Car Gathering at Townsend, Tennessee on May 5 and the reaction
was very positive to forming a Jaguar club serving our area. I found out from two of you that an attempt had been made to form a
club in Kingsport, Tennessee but that there had been difficulty in getting enough people interested to have a viable club. Hopefully,
we can combine efforts and with the bigger population base in Knoxville, we can have a viable club. I have taken the liberty to assume that the club will be successful so have started this Newsletter to take advantage of Volume 1 corresponding to the year 2001.
Our goal will be to have an active club that is a chapter of the Jaguar Club of North America (JCNA). The nearest active clubs are
in Atlanta and Louisville so we can fulfil a need for a club in this area. Of course, our activities will be open to any and all who
wish to participate whether members of other clubs or the general public.
Activities
There are many activities that we can plan that should interest some or all of our members. I think our emphasis should be on driving events since I know how much we all like to drive our classic cars. Possible events include:
Driving tours – One or two members plan a scenic one to two hour drive through the countryside where we have a meal at a restaurant. We would meet at a shopping center or someone’s house and then follow the lead car on the tour, taking care not to lose any
of the participants. An example would be trip to Rugby, Tennessee about sixty miles northwest of Knoxville founded as a cooperative community of 200 immigrants from England in 1880 by the English author, Thomas Hughes. There is a nice English café and
gift shop and a tour is available of several of the original buildings. I’m sure many of you have been there.
Tech sessions – Someone plans a visit to a facility for us to learn about repair, restoration, or modifications to Jaguars. Examples
are Harper Jaguar in Knoxville and Keisler Automotive in Maryville.
Rally – Several members plan a drive thought the countryside with directions given, sometimes with turns to be decided by answering riddles or questions or looking for landmarks. There would be average speeds to be maintained between checkpoints. Another
type of rally is the Photo Rally where a disposable camera is given to each car and photos must be taken to prove that the driver and
navigator reached certain points on the course.
Slalom – Rubber cones are set up in a large parking lot and the driver attempts to drive as fast as possible over the tight course and
the fastest time wins within each class of car.
Concours – This is where you show you car with the emphasis on cleanliness and originality, although there is a modified class.
Within JCNA rules, there are over thirty different classes and trophies from JCNA can be awarded for first, second, and third place
within each category. There are Championship class and Driven class categories. In Championship classes, both under the bonnet
and boot are judged as well as the inside and outside of the car. In Driven classes, the bonnet and boot remain closed but the car
must have a Jaguar engine. The cars do not have to be perfect and even rock chips are not deducted as long as they are touched up.
The Concours is usually followed by a banquet in the evening.
Social Events – A potluck could be held at someone’s house and Jaguar videotapes could be shown or presentations made. One
event should be an annual dinner at a restaurant where door prizes are given from sponsoring organizations, auctions held on donated items to benefit a charity such as caring for Jaguar animals at a zoo, etc.
Organizational Plans
As I told many of you in Townsend, we have been a member of the Wisconsin Jaguar Club, Ltd, for over ten years and we retired
last year to Knoxville where we had lived from 1969-75 and 1977-82. We have participated in all of the events listed above so we
have some knowledge and experience as to how a club should operate. We also know personally some of the national directors and
a former national president of JCNA. We just returned back from driving and entering our 2000 S-Type in the Louisville concours.
(We also have three E-Types and a Series III XJ6.) We are not interested in running the club and doing all the work but want to be
part of group where everyone shares the duties in organizing and running events. Realistically, we will probably need 50 –100
members to have successful events as there are always conflicts and there will be varying levels of interest and involvement. It will
be up to you to recruit members that are interested in our activities. We will probably start up slow and not have a concours for at
7
least two years as it is the event needing the most workers and participants. Those of you who I have talked to initially about the
concept, including those on the sign up sheet from Townsend are:

If you know of people who might be interested in being charter member of the club, I will be glad to send them a copy of this newsletter. Please call me (Bob Reid) at 865-692-8321 or send an email to RLReid@BellSouth.net. Also, I have mailed a copy of this
newsletter to all on my list but would prefer to email future newsletters if you have an email address. Please email me to give me
your email address. The final name of the club and a name for our newsletter will be decided later by vote of the membership.
What’s Next
Because summer is a busy time for most people, I propose that we have our first meeting/event in September. I hope that over the
summer, you all will send me names of potential members. Also, I would urge all of you to attend the JCNA 2001 Challenge Championship which will be held 15 miles south of Nashville in Franklin, Tennessee July 24 – 28, 2001. The Challenge Championship is
the only national event held by JCNA other than business meetings and it is held only every two years. We are indeed fortunate for
the event to be held in Tennessee and it will be the nearest to us for the foreseeable future. The event consists of tours, a rally, and
slalom during the week, and a concours on Saturday in downtown Franklin. The headquarters hotel is the Franklin Marriott Cool
Springs hotel. For more information, entry forms, etc., contact Kathy or Jerry Nell, kjnell@aol.com or 262-782-3451.

Commercial Advertising Rates
In The Mountain Jaguar, we offer free classified ads to SMJC members selling Jaguar cars or parts. The ads run for
three issues unless cancelled. Classified ads for non-members are $5 for two issues. Classified ads (for Jaguars only)
can also be posted nationally at www.jcna.com under Classifieds. Below are commercial ad rates for businesses. These
ads will probably be, but not necessarily, Jaguar related. Please send your business card or ad copy to Tom Ballentine,
SMJC Treasurer, 4568 Gravelly Hill Road, Louisville, TN 37777.
When you’re looking for parts or services, please consider our advertisers first. They’re helping to support our newsletter and club. Mention that you saw their ad in our newsletter. Harper’s gives a 10% discount on service, parts, and accessories, and SNG Barrett and XKs Unlimited gives a 10% discount on parts and accessories to Smoky Mountain Jaguar Club members.
Instructions for Advertisers
Because this newsletter is primarily sent out electronically, it is important to keep the file size as small as possible. To
support this effort we prefer images be supplied at 100 dpi rather than the normal 300 dpi. Images supplied at 300 dpi
will be resized to 100 dpi.
