Regional Issues of Yugoslavia, 1944-1945 During World War II, the formerly independent state of Yugoslavia was dismembered by its neighbors. The axis puppet state of Croatia absorbed Bosnia-Herzegovina. Germany not only occupied Serbia but also incorporated the territories bordering Austria into the Reich. Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary and Italy gobbled up what was left. Following the axis defeat in 1945, The DFJ (Democratic Federation of Yugoslavia) regained all of the original territory of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, and in addition was awarded portions of northeast Italy. The Regional Issues represented in this exhibit are shown in Red on the map. They are presented in the following order. Senta (Zenta) Cetinje Ljubljana (Laibach) Maribor (Marburg) Murska Sobota (Muraszombat) Split (Spalato) Zagreb Mostar Sarajevo Banja Luka Beograd (Belgrade) Trst (Trieste) Pula (Pola) Rijeka (Fiume) Items of exceptional interest are described in red. <><><><><> June 1944 Essay prepared by Prof. Andrejevi ć-Kun 20 copies were produced from the wooden cliché cert. Vojvodina (Serbia) Senta (Zenta) Overpints on Hungary Proof of overprint From the certificate: "A set of 10 overprints were prepared, arranged in a horizontal row and sheets or part sheets were overprinted successively row by row. The 10 horizontal overprints can be plated from minor characteristics of the letters, numerals and especially full stops. Overprints in the vertical rows are identical. The red star overprint was added in a separate step." In fact, it can easily be seen that the red stars were printed first, one row at a time. The surcharge on the Postage Due stamps was applied in a separate (third) operation.
