Mount Carmel Team
Donates To St. Baldrick’s
Foundation
Mount Carmel High School students had a lot to celebrate at their St. Baldrick’s assembly when more than
60 students, staff and friends of the Caravan shaved
their heads as a symbol of solidarity with pediatric cancer patients. In the process, they raised more than
$188,000.00 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation which
supports pediatric cancer research.
Fr. Tony Mazurkiewicz, O. Carm., President of
Mount Carmel High School, Sophomore Michael
Melchiorre and Patrick Elwood of FOX Chicago,
shaved their heads at Mount Carmel’s St. Baldrick’s assembly to raise money for pediatric cancer
research.
Sophomore Michael Melchiorre is leading the way
in St. Baldrick’s donations with a total of $176,972.00
at the last count. In fact, Melchiorre is currently topping the St. Baldrick’s charts as the top fundraiser in
the entire nation, leading the nation’s second place
fundraiser by more than 200%. In 2012 Melchiorre, finished third nation-wide in total donations and in 2011
he finished first. Melchiorre helped lift the Caravan to
a grand total of $188,447 in donations as of Friday,
March 15.
Those students and faculty members who did not
shave their heads found other ways to participate in the
St. Baldrick’s celebration. Whether singing karaoke,
competing in relays or donating money to throw a pie
at their favorite faculty members, Mount Carmel students enthusiastically supported the cause.
The St. Baldrick’s Day assembly takes place during
Mount Carmel’s Spirit Week. A spring tradition at
Mount Carmel which is organized by the Student
Council, students participate in a number of events
throughout the week designed to promote community
and school spirit. Other Spirit Week events include a
faculty-student basketball game and intramural championships.

Ricobene’s Night
John McNicholas was just a sophomore at St. Rita,
looking forward to the start of the baseball season when
a malignant inoperable brain tumor was diagnosed in
April of 2010.
Though John fought a courageous battle, he died
January 2011.
Through their grief his parents started this foundation in his memory to raise money to fund research to a
grossly underfunded segment of pediatric cancers.
Please visit www.livelikejohn.org to learn more.
TONIGHT, Wednesday, April 10th the John McNicholas Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation will Host a
Ricobene’s Night from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
All we need is your receipt. Take the evening off
from cooking and come have dinner at Ricobene’s.
A percentage of all proceeds/receipts collected will
go to the John McNicholas Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.
If you are unable to come out, you can also place an
order for delivery or pick up, just mention the Foundation and we will receive the credit.
Thank you for helping support this very worthwhile
cause.

Blessed Sacrament Teen Center
The Weekend of February twenty-second through the twenty-fourth, fifteen teens
from the Blessed Sacrament After-School Teen Youth program traveled all the way
to Dixon, IL for the annual Reach-out retreat at Reynoldswood Christian Camp. Also
participating in the retreat were several other parishes from the greater Chicago area.
Many of our teens made this retreat possible by attending weekly planning meetings
in which the theme and format for the retreat was discussed.
The retreat featured multiple witness talks from teens and adults, including four
of our teens, that focused on the retreat’s theme, “He Loves You Yeah, Yeah, Yeah.”
Teens also participated in small group discussion, skits, the planning of two masses,
open mic night, Holy Hour and much more! On the final evening of the retreat all
participants gathered around a bonfire and were serenaded by Blessed Sacrament’s
own Darien Parlicke on guitar.
UIC Game
On Tuesday March twenty-sixth ten teens went to the University of Illinois at
Chicago campus to see the UIC Flames take on Wright State in a close contest which
eventually clinched the Flames a spot in the post-season. The final score was UIC
sixty to Wright State’s fifty-five. Our Teens had the opportunity to pose for a picture
with Flames mascot, Sparky!
This program offers resources for all youth ages
twelve to eighteen to enjoy a
safe & relaxing atmosphere
after school.
Teens have the opportunity to get help with homework, play sports, interact
with other teens, do community service, mentoring,
boys and girls groups, youth
ministry events, retreats &
recreational activities/trips.
The Youth Center is open
on Sun. from seven to ninethirty, Tuesday from three to
six-thirty and Wednesday.
through Friday from three
to seven.
The program’s staff is dedicated to helping teens find
safe and productive ways to spend their time.
You can find more information about our program by visiting our Facebook or our
blog at bspyouth.blogspot.com.
For more information please call the Teen Center at 773-847-2011. The Blessed
Sacrament after-school teen program is located at 3528 S. Hermitage Avenue above

Holden School News
There is no question that it has been a very busy second quarter for Holden Elementary. As a result of all
that has been going on, be it ISAT testing, the threat of
school closures and of course a cold and gloomy
Spring Break, we have some exciting announcements.
First off, Holden School has a new and improved
website to better connect parents and the community
with the happenings of the Holden School. The NEW
HOLDEN WEBSITE is intended to provide parents,
students and staff quick and easy access to communications related to Holden School throughout the school
year.
We are encouraging everyone to explore and
become familiar with the new website and all it has to
offer by going to (www.Holdenschool.org). In the
coming weeks, there will be additional information
and updates posted that will help parents connect
school to home so that their children can be supported
in their academics outside of school.
The site currently provides quick access to calendars
and news so everyone stays in tune with upcoming
activities, events, surveys, assessment schedules &
much, much more.
I would also like to extend an extra special thanks to
all of our parents that participated in taking the Dress
Code Survey. The results of the survey helped guide
the decision making process, which resulted in the
Local School Council voting in favor of a NEW
DRESS CODE POLICY for Holden School. This dress
code policy will take effect in the upcoming 20132014 school year. Under this dress code policy, students grades PreK-8 will be required to come to school
each day dressed according to the guidelines of the
dress code policy.
To make the transition as easy and economical as
possible over the next five months, detailed information regarding specific vendors and incentives will be
made available to all families in April. In the meantime, the new Dress Code Policy is available for
rev ie w o n o u r we b site (click under News &
Announcements to find out more about the details).
As a reminder REPORT CARD PICK-UP is next
week WEDNESDAY, APRIL 17th. Keep an eye out
for more information that will be sent home this week
with students regarding the timeframe for picking up
your child’s report card. We look forward to seeing all
our parents/ guardians on that day.
Lastly, yet most importantly, we cannot forget that
the end of the year NWEA Assessment is just around
the corner. Student’s grades k-8 will begin testing
April 29 through June 7. We cannot stress enough how
important it will be for Holden School and parents to
work together to ensure our students (your children)
perform their very best on this final assessment for the
year. To learn more about NWEA, go to our Parent tab
on the new Holden website (www.Holdenschool.org)
and click NWEA Assessment Information to access the
parent toolkit to learn more about this important
assessment and what you can do to help prepare your
child.

thy protection, implored thy help,

The Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation
invites residents and community groups to volunteer to
help revitalize their neighborhoods by participating in
the 2013 Clean and Green citywide beautification effort on Saturday, April 20.
“The Clean and Green event is a great opportunity
for residents to come together to observe Earth Day
while pitching in to take care of their neighborhood,”
said Charles L. Williams, commissioner, Chicago
Department of Streets and Sanitation.
“By volunteering for just a few hours to assist with
tasks like raking leaves, weeding, or removing litter
that has accumulated during the winter, residents can
help beautify the city and build community pride.”
Community groups who wish to participate are
asked to identify a worksite and contact 311 to register.
The Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation can
provide the brooms, rakes, shovels and bags needed to
complete each cleaning project.
Individuals who wish to participate can also call 311
