Kelly High School held its annual Fall Sports Recognition Banquet after school on Oct. 24th. All
teams were recognized for their accomplishments on and off the field and the varsity athletes were

The students should
give their parents an idea
what to expect. In this day
of teacher accountability,
no student should be
shocked at the grade he or
she receives. Maybe a
slight change if there was
a recent test, but they
should never tell their
parents "Oh I didn't
know". Many schools have
ways for the parents to
keep updated by fiveweek reports and even
listing grades on the computer.
You follow these simple rules it may reduce
the stress of the day. Then
take a little time to analyze the complete report
and make a follow-up contact. Sometimes expectations cause stress. When I
was a young teacher at St.
Joseph High School, one
set of parents came to see
me about their daughter's
B in Algebra. I said "She
got the B because she is
doing good", and the
mother broke down crying. It seems her daughter
had never gotten anything but A's since she
started school. Please remember, that the grades
are not necessarily an indication of what is going
to happen in 20 years.
Think about it. When is
the last time anyone
asked you what was your
Spelling grade, second
quarter in the fourth
grade. Reports help us
keep our kids on track,
but all kids learn differently, at different paces,
as long as they eventually
learn
how to learn.

the rookie teacher, for example if you make a mistake on the Report Card
do not use white-out, depending on the type of
card you have you may
have to start all over. Carbonless Report Cards can
be extremely hard to read
by the second and third
quarter and those that
have the standard type
card can have the problem
I had at the West Pullman School where the
student used white-out to
change her grade, got it
signed by Mom, then used
white-out again to put the
original grade back and
returned it to school. "if
the kid had only used that
much thinking during the
semester her grades
would have been great".
The parent picking up the
Report Card can use the
time, no matter how
small, to clarify any questions about the course of
instruction. Use it.
Teachers should prepare for this day in the
same serious manner that
they take their lesson
preparations. Be careful
to prepare for each child
with ideas parents can
use at home. Don't do
what I did at the Metcalfe
School when I showed a
third grader's papers to
the parents and discussed
his lack of progress in
Math when the Father
says, well that's all fine,
but those aren't my son's
papers. I certainly felt I
was the one who needed
remedial help. I always
suggested to my teachers
that they do their homework and justify the
grades so there is no ambiguity with expectation
and grade given. It may
be advisable to give numeric grades where possible instead of letter
grades, because most
know how to convert
these.

natural gas bills is available via the Low-Income
Home Energy Assistance
Program which provides
grants to help customers
pay outstanding bills, reconnect service, and
maintain natural gas
service.
The program is open
for seniors (60+) and people with disabilities and
for households where disconnection due to nonpayment has occurred
households with children
under five years old and
for LIHEAP eligible
households where the
heating system is non-operable and/or has been
red tagged by the utility
company. General enrollment for all other qualified customers will begin
on Nov. 1st.
LIHEAP is administered by CEDA (Community Economic Development Association) and
Peoples Gas customers

Customers who meet
